    My son and I moved to Cuenca Ecuador just over a year ago. We sold everything and brought only what we could carry. We have zero regret we love it here also. Everything they say about Ecuador is spot on. I am a Vet and sadly I cannot afford to live in the US, living there I have no chance of a retirement without work involved. Here not only is retirement possible but early retirement if you are willing to live within reason.

We looked at Vilcabamba but there were (for us) too many gringos so we chose the Yunguilla Valley. Our only instance of crime/violence was a road rage incident where a driver smashed out a side window on our car because I cursed as he drove us off the road. hey guys, i'm from Ecuador, from Macará in fact but i grew up in Loja city, living in London-UK and in Sweden at moment but planning to go back as soon as my sons are a bit older, the situation in Europe is deteriorating rapidly, inflation rates are crazy, energy went out the roof and crime is increasing, we know that there's some problems in Ecuador but i am of the belief that being careful and developing a society with good friends over there we should be ok, the war in Ukraine and the influx of certain type of immigrants into Europe have caused so much damage to the stability of Europe that i'm afraid there's no way back. The situation in the USA seems pretty similar, the polarization of society over there is causing the collapse of good relations among neighbors, ethics and integrity are very low, crime is spiraling out of control, there's no respect to the authority any more. The 2 main reasons to go back to Ecuador is cause i've got the rest of my family there but also food supply, Ecuador as most of south America are agricultural nations and trust me when i say that hunger is coming to the world, for instance in The UK we can verily see fresh produce, getting very expensive and some products are becoming scarce month after month. anyway, drop me a line, it will be good keeping in touch

      You are going to love Ecuador! Here at our home (6400ft. elevation) we get around 57-60 degrees as a low at night. We usually run 73-78 during the day. In Vilcabamba proper, it gets a little warmer in the day (unusually high would be 90) This is a country of micro climates. 10 minutes in any direction gives a little different temp and humidity level. Here at our home, we are usually around 60% humidity. Everyone raves about the climate here. Being almost right on the equator keeps our temps very steady. The Northern part of Ecuador is where the equator is. We are South so we are slightly off the equator. Ecuador actually means "Equator".

When you were exploring different countries to move to, did you consider Argentina? Also, did you speak Spanish before moving to Ecuador, or have your learned it since? I am thinking of retiring there. I am worried about the language barrier, probably more than anything. Been there done that, never again. My experience is that HOA's anywhere are run by little people with big egos. There are so many places to live here without that. I know Ecuador uses the US Dollar which I actually like. The problem is they are saying that the US is starting a program next July to set the groundwork for a Central Bank Digital Currency and they will cancel out all physical dollars eventually. All banks would be taken out and everyone will have an account with the Central Bank.I am not sure how that will work here in the US let alone overseas or how quickly that would happen. Just discovered your channel. You guys are so confidence inspiring!
    I'd like to ask a few questions I haven't seen anyone write or talk about yet. Anyone in the know, please feel free to pitch in.
    I'm not sure were you are but with a few more vids I'll be able to figure it out. You say you're in the hills I think. What elevation?
    Is safe drinking water an issue? Even if on town water? Does it taste good?
    Is it humid there or is the need for air conditioning only sort of season related? I like things on the cool side personally, and if hot and humid you'll find me near the air conditioner..even in the car, haha.
    Tell me about mosquitoes or other blood sucking insects please? I am very allergic and swell up like George Costanza's Gortex winter coat (Seinfeld reference, ha)
    I endure mosquitoes here at home of course. I know that to make my arthritis more bearable that the climate that helps that will always have mosquitoes but I was hoping to get a sense of what to expect. What months would you suggest I plan to visit Ecuador when mosquitoes would be at their worse? That's my plan so I can see the worst to expect. I don't mind clouds and rain. I do like some sun though to dry things out and feel that Vit D in small doses. I prefer cool to warm as opposed to hot and humid. I have a feeling being on higher ground will help with lowering the humidity. Do you depend on natural gas or propane for heat in the winter? How many minutes drive one way to nearest shopping town for groceries and such? Which is more common in a small car, gas or diesel? Is it USD$ there?
    I'm not sure if maybe you're not rural so maybe some of these questions don't apply.
    Things I'd like to get away from..
    Irresponsible dog owners who let their dogs bark all day and night.
    Cars and trucks with loud after market not OEM exhaust mufflers. It seems 7 or 8 out of 10 vehicles are so loud my poor old brain rattles. I'm hoping to move somewhere peaceful and friendly. Somewhere were my help is appreciated when I offer it..
    And lastly...sorry about so many questions but you two seemed ideal to be asking, I too would plan on buying a small house I think instead of renting. Can you direct me to where you talk about house styles and prices? Do they have basements like here in Cda and the USA? How do you protect your savings? Does every expat keep a bank account back at home and then move money by computer to a local bank down there?
    And one last question, which areas would you recommend me to visit to see if it'd be suitable to call home? I think I shouldn't be more than 25 min drive one way, maybe 30 or maybe even be in town if the town isn't too big. As I age I know driving will be more of an issue so should be close enough to maybe bicycle to the grocery store and check-up at the docs, haha.
    Thank you very much in advance. You guys look so happy and peaceful, I'm very happy for you.
    I have to try to find that myself. I think it's key to me staying alive.
    👍🙏

      These are all questions that need to be addressed on an exploratory trip. Yes we have mosquitos (and no see ums) even at our elevation which is 6400 ft. The city of Loja is 7800 ft and they have them to. I don't know that we have experienced them in Cuenca which is 8500+. Many people can't live in Cuenca because of the high elevation. Lot's of noise in the villages and cities here. Lots of loud motorcycles with loud mufflers. The garbage trucks all loud spoeaker this annoying music the entire time they are driving around. As doe the gas (propane) trucks. During elections, a month of loudspeakers blaring for favorite candidates. Fish & Vegetable vendors also blare loud speakers. South America in general is a noisy place. Lot's of loud parties also.
      As for dogs. Street dogs are everywhere here. Lots of poop on sidewalks and street. The culture seems to be one of Machismo so they don't always nueter their males here. There are many groups here who raise money to try and deal with that. I Cuenca, the gringos have been somewhat succesful with that. Everytime you sit at an outside restaraunt expect dogs and street beggars to approach you.
      No A/C or heat, not necesarry. We have a small little plug in space heater, but have used it on 2 occasions in 5 years. Typicall humidity at our hom is about 70-80% During dry season, 50%. On the coast they have A/C. We have a fireplace, never used. In the North near Otovalo, they use fire places a lot.
      Yes, we are on the USD.
      Lots of diesel pickups here. Most taxi's are diesel. In the cities you will find some electric taxis. I have a gas car.
      We shop mostly in Violcabamba, but do go to SuperMaxi in Loja which is 40 min. away. We live 10 min. to town by car. We are fairly quiet where we live, but certain time of the year we can hear neighbors loud music on the other side of the mountain.
      NO Bank can protect your money!. aS YOU SEE IN THE U.S. 3 BANKS IN ONE WEEK WENT BELLY UP. The banks here have insurance up to $33k per account holder.
      We have great water where we are. In the cities they chlorinate. I do not drink the water that goes through the treatment plant in Vilcabamba.
      Many of your questions are answered in our other videos. But again, these are things you need to see for yourself on a visit to Ecuador. It is never going to be like North America (thank God!) so expect some culture shock. Many people don't make it here because of the so called "differences".

You can do basic hello and thank you but any deep communication is very rare and the cultural differences are saving face is something we do not understand when it comes to the basics of knowing the other person, they very rarely show any feelings from a relationship to dealing with business, banking, etc... So, please, tell me how you deal with the language, over here every word has 6 different meanings because every word has a different tone and 95% of the expats don't get it and it's too difficult to overcome. Thank you

      It can be the same here. Many Gringo's don't make the effort to learn language and culture. Those are usually the ones who don't last and are critical and have derogatory posts. Having said that, ma y English speakers here in our area.

    • @jolifarms-Ecuador
      @jolifarms-Ecuador  2 года назад +2

      I feel like it is more stable here than the U.S. However, it is always subject to change no matter where you live. All of my friends here feel like this is the best place to be in terms of political climate and the elitist's war against the people. You must understand that politics and the law are very different here than other places. It takes a little getting used to.

    • @jolifarms-Ecuador
      @jolifarms-Ecuador  2 года назад

      I believe these are 10 but I will double check. When it comes to temperature you need to understand that this is a country of micro climates. 10 minutes in any direction hi es a slightly different climate. We are 10 minutes south of Vilcabamba and are 10 degrees cooler. Our temp us a pretty steady73-75 during g the day and 57-62 at night. Once 8n a while we get an 80 degree day but u can count those on one hand. We are less humid than vilcabamba. Usually around 55-75%

    • @KYLESRANCH
      @KYLESRANCH 2 года назад +1

      @@jolifarms-Ecuador Hello and thank you kindly for your more specific numbers on gallons and degrees. Yes, I did notice that you had mentioned micro climates. When someone compares something like, "It's 10° cooler here" I have to ask, "Cooler than where, please?" And when a cost is mentioned, for an example, It's $3 to fill my tank" I have to ask what size the tank is because a larger tank may lower the price per gallon or per liter. (That's just me). Also, the size tank can show exactly how much gas a couple uses in a month and with a large tank they might only have to fill up 4 times a year vs. a smaller tank at once a month, for example. Also, I have a friend in Manta and she also had mentioned "gated communities" and in your video you say you live behind a "brick wall" is that right? My question is, do you need a brick wall or gated community in order to feel safe there? My friend also mentioned the Latin Kings who I guess are a gang in Guayakil. And so I wonder if gangs there might cause ex-patriots to live behind walls in gated communities in order to feel safe. Would owning a home there on some land (say 10 acres) be dangerous for an ex-pat? Again, kind thanks for you replies. Much appreciated.

    • @jolifarms-Ecuador
      @jolifarms-Ecuador  2 года назад

      @@KYLESRANCH Yes, all the tanks are the same size here in Ecuador. I have not seen anything available for household use that was a different size. I think we have stated in our vids that we are 10 degrees cooler than Vilcabamba. We like our wall. I don't think gated communities are really any safer. People have been robbed and tied up in these gated communities. What is important is to have deterrents in place. I can expand more on that in person. There are many expats living here on rural land 10 acres or more who would tell you they feel safe. Others maybe not. These are all opinions, and everyone here has one. I think they best thing to do is come for a visit and ask the expats you meet what they think.

      @proyectonuevo7487 2 года назад +1

      @@KYLESRANCH Hahahaha friend you worry too much, the gas tank is cheap and if you are worried about the cost of gasoline, now there are electric vehicles, the gangs are only in areas of the coast in large cities like Guayaquil or Manabí and if you are a man with legal business you should not worry, they only attack each other between gangs, if you die you can live in a closed area but you can live without bricks

      Well, this has been an unusual year weather wise. Typically very sunny until late afternoon and then nice rain to cool things down. Here in Vilcabamba we have the windy season which is dry. Usually last 3 months ending in October or so.
      As for healthcare, there are doctors and a basic hospital here in VIlca. However, I see a cardiologist in Loja. Better hospitals there. I see my eye surgeon in Cuenca. Best in all of Ecuador. I have a great G.I. doctor in Loja. We have dentists here in Vilca,. But we see a holistic dentist in Loja.
