Small garden transformed

- Ever wondered how top garden designers and landscape contractors manage to transform a small dowdy garden into something wonderful? This time-lapse video, filmed in October/November 2015, shows the skill and ingenuity involved when Tully Landscapes Ltd got to work transforming a small garden in Dublin. You can see the video of the garden two years later here • Stunning small garden ...
The garden in the video is just 20 foot wide by 28 foot long (6.096m x 8.534m) and suffered from poor drainage. It was dominated by a 1970s vintage concrete garden shed positioned just six feet from the kitchen window. The client wanted a new garden that would have a low maintenance courtyard design, maximise the available space and deal with the drainage and water logging issue. During the initial survey one boundary wall was found to be structurally unsound and required demolition. In addition, it was decided to demolish the end wall and rebuild it incorporating a new, larger garden shed and a relocated back gate. All other existing walls were strengthened.
The new garden was designed by Colin Cooney, an award-winning Landscape Architect. The design featured three raised planter beds featuring, respectively, a Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum dissectum Garnet), a Magnolia Heaven Scent and an Olea Europea Forma Toscana (i.e. Olive tree) plus an assortment of bee-friendly plants. The raised planter walls were faced with Donegal Quartz Stone.

With sincere thanks to all the craftsmen featured, without whose co-operation this video would not have been possible.

One of the best transformations I've seen
Thank you Yvonne. As mention below in reply to Della Monk, here is the garden two years later ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html
1:12 I don't know why, but that is really funny to me!
Well spotted! After all that effort he then climbs off the raised bed and wipes his brow at 1.22 approx.
What a stunning transformation!
There's nothing better than a man who knows what he's doing in a garden! I like this design because you can change it up any time.
Very true, Jellie. I know of one couple who hired a garden expert to 'do up' their garden only for all the plants to die off after a year because they had been planted poorly or were unsuitable for the site. Here is what the garden here looked like after two years ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html
Stunning, what a difference, meeting nature half way for sure!!!
Nice! No lawn. Love the top stones on the planters, seats for many, and room for as many plants as you want. Very easy-care.
Thank you Helen. It was impossible to grow a nice lawn in the space available because of drainage and shade issues. The raised beds have worked a treat but there have been a few problems with the built-in lights with rain/moisture sometimes causing the LCD fuse to blow. Best wishes.
This is so great! Plants contained so beautifully and trash bins disguised so elegantly, and a comfortable, generous place to chill. Really, really nice. 🇨🇦
Thank you Della. Have you see the garden two years later after the plants grew? Here is the later video ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html
Best wishes.
Amazing...beautifully done..this is what inspires me ..thanks for that 😊😊❤..
Wow, a lovely oasis of calm.
Wow!!! What a transformation. Beautifully done. ❤
Thank you, Carol. Am glad you liked it - have you seen what it looked like two years later when the plants had grown/flowered etc? If not, here is the short video update ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html
Unfortunately the Fatsia (near the back gate) died during the Winter as a result of being attacked quite badly last Summer by some sort of root fly or similar. Best wishes.
O, wow!! Fabulous transformation. Love everything about it.
Thank you Patricia. Sorry for the delay in replying. Best wishes, Karl
Amazing transformation!
Thank you, Amma. Have you seen how the garden looks two years later ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html ? Best wishes.
What a stunning backyard. An oasis I would never want to go inside. Love it 😍
Being a landscaper myself. Awesome job !
Thanks Paul. The three lads did a wonderful job along with the sub-contractors who built the walls etc. Have you seen the garden now? Here is the link ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html . Best wishes.

Just saw the 2 years after vid. It turned out beautifully. I loved the variety of plants. The homeowner even gets to enjoy fresh rosemary.
I really liked that you all labeled everything. I will be looking for English lavender.
Hi D Jay. Many thanks for your kind words. The English Lavender just ends to be trimmed twice in the year and it really thrives. The bees also love it big time! Best wishes.
First class work
Yes indeed. The garden was awarded an ‘Award of Merit’ at the Association of Landscape Contractors of Ireland (ALCI) awards ceremony held in Belfast in 2016. Thank you for your comment, Andrew. Best wishes.
Beautiful garden
Love this ! From Calgary Alberta Canada 🇨🇦

Impressive, very continental looking when lights on in the evening.

Thank you Urszula. Greetings to you and all the other viewers in Poland.
Brilliant transformation. Dont know why im even watching these videos after doing this type of work all day. But now im glad i did 😁
Thanks Matthew. Almost two and a half years later everything is going very well except for one of the bin store doors which came apart at the top (ten months out of the guarantee period!) because the wooden laths there were very thin, slightly too short and poorly fixed into the galvanised steel frame. The bin store doors were largely decorative in any case. I fixed it with NoNails-type exterior adhesive and the help of some wood clamps (removed after two days) and its better than ever now. The shed and back gates are heavier duty & much better made/reinforced so they are fine. In late February/early March 2018 Ireland was hit by heavy snow and unusually cold (for Ireland) winds from Siberia (the so-called 'Beast from the East' weather storm) but the Olive Tree, which has grown quite large, survived along with most of the other plants. Best wishes and thanks again for your comment.
A bin hide... what a great idea. I have never thought of that. Thanks for the tip.
Hi Astroflight, here is what the garden looks like now ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html . We decided against putting a roof on the bin store as it might be a problem (heavy to lift) if snow was on top and would also cause any bin smell to get concentrated within the enclosed area. Best wishes.
Very nice. Do you have any videos on how to build a garden on an extreme slope where terracing is out of the question?
I don't know what your garden slope looks like but this is the best suggestion I could find that didn't involve terracing or installing expensive ground anchor-type devices ruclips.net/video/fN7GCbKRxQo/видео.html The only pity is that they don't show the finished result. The video suggests that you plant a suitable variety of Catoneaster (it is native to the Himalayas) to anchor the soil and then presumably plant other suitable flowers etc around/between them. I have had to dig up a Cotoneaster in the past and can vouch for how deep and firm the root is (and that was in my very flat garden). Of course you don't want to plant really invasive plants or they will take over the whole slope or overwater, for obvious reasons, the ground once plants are placed in the slope! If your garden or area is very dry then the video's suggestion that you use root irrigation might be a good idea. I have seen the use of partially buried thick plastic flexible pipes all over Israel while on holiday there and they seem to work in very dry conditions or where the slope is severe. There they supply really small amounts of recycled water (delivered as a trickle just to the base of each plant's roots) mixed with tiny amounts of nutrients. You might find videos on the web about this trickle irrigation system. Hope this is of some use.
Awesome work!
Glad you enjoyed the video Marilyn. Their great work really paid off. Best wishes from a damp and windy Ireland.
Looks like some sort of waiting area in a public place, we have something like that at the parking Lot of our Bank :(
Too much Stones, I believe!!!
@@kryzkrozzable It's called hard landscaping. People who don't have time for garden maintenance prefer this .... including me :) I see plenty of planting in her garden which, once it matures, will add lots of greenery.
@@helenaville5939 The planting has now matured and, as you say Helena, has produced lots of greenery to soften the rendered wall etc. You can see the result two years later here ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html

Thanks WuPidu.
Fantastic!
Glad you enjoyed the video, Alberto. This is how it looks two years later ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html
Unfortunately we don't get enough sunshine in Ireland for the Olive Tree to produce fruit but it is thriving. Best wishes.
I don't have land for a garden.. so I start with my daughter to make a mini-garden in scale ..
When it done I'll make a video. Your work ispired me :-)
So beautiful! and totally suited to the feminine client. Thank you for posting.
Thanks Dawn. Yes she loves it, especially when it is warm enough to sit out and just relax reading a book.
Beautiful Belfast..nice job.
S T U N N I N G ~~ Never have I seen such a small area made over so well...BRAVO :)
Thank you Mossie. Believe me, it is a very small area but thanks to the superb design it really opens it up. Best wishes, Karl

Very true, Botaz. Unfortunately grass etc just wouldn't thrive in the small, poorly-drained and often overshadowed small garden here. Thanks for your comment.
Looks nice

Thank you for your comment. I hope to upload an update in a few weeks showing the garden two years on. Best wishes.
This is the garden as it appears now ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html
This is very nice indeed. You should be proud. I need to sort my back garden out but really am struggling with the design. I'll keep going!
Keep at it, Steve. We were trying to improve out garden for ten years. Nothing worked and by then it was obvious the key to changing things was to move the shed and re-locate the back gate.
Like the Edit Guys well done.!!
Thank you. I was trying to show the entire process, step-by-step. However, if i was doing it again I would aim to have it 2 minutes long as I think most viewers tend to like videos as short as possible. Best wishes.

Beautiful, you need art on the plain concrete walls.
Hi KidCity. The garden is only 20 foot wide so artwork or painting the walls might make it appear even smaller. However, as the plants have grown you don't see so much wall, which is finished in natural render. The Olive Tree in particular has really taken off. Thank you for your comment.

I stumbled across your video mate, absolutely love the content. Subscribed straight away, We should connect!
Hi Llew. Glad you like the channel. Hope to add more videos over the next few months.
and the garden where is it?? it had more vegetation before, now more gravel and more tiles. So now when you sit on the deck you can see 3 walls, yeap nice view. wouldn't it be great to have the circular thing with tiles where the deck is and plant trees or high bushes so that they can hide the concrete/walls, etc.?
Hi Georgia. The garden is so small (just 20 feet wide by 28 feet long) that trees or high bushes around the walls would make the place look tiny. The plants and shrubs have grown quite a bit since the video was made and have thus removed the bare look from the rendered walls. You can see how it looks now in my other video. Thanks for your comments.
Obviously the owners wanted a low-maintenance garden, hence the hard landscaping. If you want a higher-maintenance garden go ahead. This owner paid for it so only her choice counts.
@@helenaville5939 Spot on! Because of the climate, the flat and very small site, hard landscaping offered the best solution.
where is the garden ?
Hi Helmut. Here is the garden after two years growing and developing ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html The Olive tree is doing especially well. Thank you for your observation/question.

Great to see why it's worth paying professionals, but I bet the cost was eye-watering at £15,000+
Hi Barrios. The secret is to find the right professionals as unfortunately there are a lot of cowboys out there. Best wish
A GREAT JOB
Wow ,beautiful, how much did it cost you?
More than was initially expected as there was more construction work needed (two walls which were unsafe had to be replaced etc.). However, tax relief was available at the time to try and stimulate employment in the construction industry. Overall, at the time, it cost about the price of a small car but will last much longer and has transformed the garden which was unusable before due to water logging and heavy shade etc.. Now it would cost far more because of inflation etc.
I may be the odd one out but what was the name of the end music ? It's beautiful ~
Hi Cassandra, the music is called Piano Ballad and it can be found in the Sound Effects part of iMovie. Thanks for your question.
The garden? The garden disapear...
Estela, here it is ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html

Great job! I am wondering how you got that vehicle in there to break up the shed, lol (can't think of what it is called)
Voiceov Reason i think it's called a excavator*? They tore the back entrance(?) I believe to get that machine in. Since they had to redo everything!
@@MrKiet76 and Voiceov. Hi guys. The mini-excavator is a Japanese-made Takeuchi TB 125 bought new by the contractor in 2004 and still in use. it is very popular here in Ireland with builders and landscapers etc as its very reliable, easily moved on a trailer, cheap to operate and capable of performing a lot of different tasks. I have a video of it working in the garden here ruclips.net/video/SeTRK_TvQdI/видео.html The back and side garden walls had to be replaced as they were not sound ( the side wall had actually been built without a proper foundation sometime in the early 1970s.). The contractor was able to get access to the garden by simply demolishing the back wall first and driving into the garden - see the video above. The area is really small but looks bigger due to the wide angle GoPro lens. Thanks for your comments.
Beautiful But looks expensive
Yes, but it was a once in a lifetime expense. However, it now means the garden can be used almost year-round. The old garden was full of shadows and very damp. Plants {other than weeds, mint (never plant it in a flower bed!) and a few types of shrub} just didn't grow.
Super
Thanks Park. Best wishes.
Just needs a couple of specimen plants to set it off.
@1:11 and @1:16 the turbo 'tamper' lol. Look at the others still in their one position while he goes turbo lol; cybernetic organism with living tissue over steel endoskeleton....
Well spotted!
Is it a garden?
Well Grenville, it is now ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html ! Best wishes.
Don't like the concrete walls. Cover with a nice red ceder horizontal slat panels.
Hi SupermanKelly! We did consider red cedar panels on the walls but decided against it. Apart from the additional cost, Irish gardens (especially the one featured) get a lot of rain during the year and the panels would provide shelter for slugs and snails to hide out. The red cedar has a beautiful colour in the beginning but weathers very quickly to a grey-silver colour that was thought might be too sombre for the whole garden. The rendered walls provide a nice contrast to the Donegal quartz raised bed walls as well as the plants - see the garden after two years here ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html
Thanks for your comment.
SupermanKelly™ it’s not concrete it’s rendered. Ready to paint so they could paint it in white to suit the rest.
Hi Warwick. We have left the render as in Ireland's damp climate painted garden walls tend to need to be repainted quite quickly. Apart from the expense, regulate repainting can result in damage to plants from ladders etc. Thank you again for taking the time to comment. This is the garden now ruclips.net/video/s1nklCHRMCQ/видео.html
@@karlmartin2698 The "Two years later" video shows just how much the colourful planting has softened the walls. Some commenters forget that the newly planted greenery will mature and transform the hard landscaping. Fantastic job. Well done!
Lol bet they charged 10k lol
Looks too good if that's possible
So far so good except for (i) one of the bin store doors coming apart and (ii) an electric fault developing with the lights. The bin store door was fixed with 'no nails' type adhesive and an electrician has been booked to look at the lights. Thanks for your comment.
wow
Thank you Paula. I hope to make another video in a few months showing the garden over two years later.
Karl Martin 🙂 I Will be looking forward to that
how much would a project like this cost?
It actually cost the householder a lot less than you might think because at the time the Irish Government granted substantial tax refunds on such projects (to boost employment in the building industry), the site had easy access, no changes were made at any stage to the original plan, prices for such building work were less in 2015 and the work was undertaken during the winter when quotes tend to be more competitive. Send an email to info@tullylandscapes.ie for details and quotes for their work.
Great transformation; except - that unsightly exposed electrical wire running from the back planter, up the corner and then the length of the entire wall? Really???
Spot on, Wynand. It was strange the way it was left visible - probably the lads were in a hurry towards the end. Thanks for your comment.
Hi Andrew. No there were no changes by the customer at any stage. The job was planned by Tully's to take place over a certain number of weeks before they started on another, much, much larger job. The last two days on the job featured here were to some extent rushed in order to fit their deadline I think - some delay had been caused by bad weather etc. However, the job was finished to an excellent standard overall and won a construction award from the landscape gardeners' professional body.
Come on ur not doing it quick enough😂
Ha ha! In fact Maureen, the three lads from Tully's never seemed to take tea or lunch breaks much to the wonderment of the neighbours. Best wishes.
concrete everywhere yuk ! gardens are about plants, trees, grasses and wildlife it looks like that bit when you go through a fastfood drive through and you are waiting in line to get food.
The wide angle lenses used make the paved patio area appear bigger, and the end planter bed smaller, then they actually are. The actual area of stone paving is not much greater than the area originally covered with paving/concrete as some of the original paved area was removed along with the concrete path to the old gate.
All the planter beds are faced with Donegal Quartz Stone. This provides lots of cover for spiders and small insects which are then preyed upon by House Sparrows (for their nestlings), Blue Tits, the odd Wren, Magpies etc. The raised beds help birds avoid the many cats in the neighbourhood as they find it much easier to get airborne. The old garden unfortunately proved ideal for local cats to ambush foraging birds.
The plants have been specially chosen to be insect friendly and, as a result, far more bees, Green lacewings, butterflies etc have been seen compared with the old garden.
Do behave Karl you have replaced a dull concrete garden with another dull concrete garden and you bloody well know it ! Do not pretend that you seriously considered the wildlife in the design because you clearly didnt , ( cats ambushing ?) really ambushing stop pretending you built that concrete eyesore because of cats Karl , listen to yourself, if you truly built a wildlife garden then how many entry and exit points did you specifically "build" for hedgehogs who are under serious threat from gardens EXACTLY like this !
Thank you kindly.
Mr- Jammin you're thinking of "nature." This is "landscaping," where humans interact with and manipulate nature and create something much better than was there before. Pay attention.
Karl Martin well done, sir! Ignore that whining troll of an idiot who clearly knows nothing of landscape design.
*
Garden? Seriously?
:( 90% pathways.
Hi Jessi, the path and gravel areas (which appear greater in area because of the wide angle cameras used) were required to deal with a water logging issue and to enable a wheel chair user safe and full access to all parts of the garden, especially the raised beds. The entire garden is just 20 ft wide by 28 ft long so the design helps give the impression of grater length. Thanks for your comment.
Hi karl is it possible to get a rough idea of cost I am looking to get something similar done and and help would be great I am in south dublin ,even if you could PM me thank you
Hi Jay, I would rather not be specific but it was a good chunk of my redundancy money at the time and a once in a lifetime event - although part of the relatively high cost was because we had to get two unstable walls (one at the side and one at the back ) replaced as well as some drainage work because of waterlogging. In any case, the job was done almost 5 years ago, in winter (when work was slow for the landscapers) and tax relief was available (as the government was trying to boost employment at the time) so it wouldn't be a good guide as to what this type of project would cost now when the economy is at full employment.
I would suggest that you get several quotes - but only from the best contractors (based on recommendations if possible) as there are a lot of cowboys out there who promise the stars etc but...
Tully Landscapes did the initial design (which was paid for up front). When we asked for a quote they then supplied detailed costings running to several pages which included stuff right down to the exact sand and cement quantities that would be used. No changes were made to the original design so the job cost exactly what they said. The secret to getting a job like this done to the quoted price is not to change anything once agreed at the start and have everything in writing. If your garden is suitable, you could save money by using good timber fencing and maybe raised beds made form timber rather than stone.
Best wishes, Karl
@@karlmartin2698 thanks a million for your reply we got a quote today I would love to send you a couple of photos and pick your brains if you had the time
