To translate from some of the comments below: A lot of people are worried about the WEIGHT this has added to the terrace. I don't see it becoming a problem for 2 reasons; 1) the heaviest items seem to have been placed near the strongest parts of the structure --- near walls and corners. 2) Judging from the clever choice of plants, someone knows what they're doing; i.e. probably using very light soil mix in small quantities. Best growth will occur if this is designed for 'flood and flush'. In other words, the soil is never allowed to get saturated, heavy and mucky. Some comments in Spanish concerned the loss of the view, the panorama; followed by a pithy retort about the need for intimacy. I feel that the design strikes a good balance: height on each end for privacy, and to break the wind; and a bit of a view above the railing. It hasn't blocked any famous Paris landmarks. Someone commented that while out-of-towners find the rooftops of Paris to be of great beauty, a Parisian might not. I did ask, below, why the original paving-stone walking surface hadn't been left alone ... and others also commented on this. To be fair, the new floor may be hiding a new drainage system for the planters. I did question the use of so much Redwood (Sequoia). True, it is resistant to rot, but its being over-harvested in Calif. and takes centuries to grow. Its also much higher maintenance than lumber companies would have us believe, especially for decking. In 2019, a greener choice might be the no-skid, never-rot planking made from recycled plastic. I very much like the solid-colour wood panels that were used on the two end walls here. I've heard it called 'smart board', ( maybe because its easy on the environment ) ... but I don't know what they call it in France. There are many catty comments about things which are simply a matter of taste. What makes this a good design are the proportions and the clean lines. Terrace gardens are too often silly or sissy-looking ..... which this is not.
If responsible adults and no children are allowed out there it’s a wonderful spot but don’t we all have that one friend or family member who goes too far? It is a very nice area though. Good job French Man!
Safety rails are specifically set to a safe height to stop people from accidentally falling and younger children climbing. The floor has been raised and a permanent planter built along the front which would almost certainly make it illegal, regardless of how much or little someone had to drink.
C'est magnifique. I'm from Ireland (je suis Irlandaise et je ne parle no ecrit bien francais. Merci beaucoup pour cette video. Queal transformation. Formidable.

Seeing people build such beautiful things from scratch makes me hold such enormous amount of respect for them. The very sight of a tool box gives me anxiety. I wish I had such talent 😔
It's a terrace, not a balcony, so I think that there's a regular flat beneath it. It's like a flat part on the roof. (If you pause at 0:19, you can see a railing in the right upper corner, that's another terrace)
Beautiful home. ...very lucky and fortunate!!! I'd probably keep the depth and instal some steps down.... it feels like a lot of wasted space was created.

Why? Do you fear he might hit his head on the sky? This way it is at least flush with the doorstep and he could hide the cables for the lights under it.
DoctorExitus There's only one way to touch the sky, doctor ;). But I see there's an awning, I wouldn't want to have it close. Other reasons: Accumulation of dust and dirt underneath have you thought? What about overweighted guests, or a bunch of people together? I am not lazy but longterm it becomes undesirable/unpleaseant to go outside just because you have to make an effort (big upstep out) to have access to your own terrace imo.
Are you following safety construction codes. Railing is too low and is the rain water going to accumulate below the wood floor. Looks nice but I think the weight structure might be over the balcony weight capacity. Danger! Danger! Danger! Mister Robin
Gianfranco Sale ok. Fine. It is a Terrace. BUT...that railing is way too low for that elevated floor. Also, try to correct people and teach them rather than ask weird questions. Not helpful.
If you had bothered to translate the creator's comments, you'd know that all the railings in the building were changed (that is something that is done as a whole, decided on by the owners of all the apartments, and you can't just change the railing when you want to) and they had taken this into account when doing this renovation.
1 - there's enough weight for the terrace to hold. 2 - sacrificed height to the sky??? (if anything, they gained more fresh air) 3 - Railings were supposed to be changed in the whole building a few weeks after this build 4 - Build a half wall to eliminate people staring at you from the street and the buildings on the side. There's enough light because guess what... It's outside

the balcony is very nice, thank you very much, i would like to ask where the drainage is in case of heavy rain. Thank you again and best wishes to you.
The result is beautiful I am concerned how long it will last, I'm not sure about the waterproofing beneath the terrace, this whole thing may rot very fast

I was thinking the same. The floor is too high right now. However, the video has a lot of good points and some good lessons like “do not do that”.
I think the planter boxes create distance from the rail so that falling off is unlikely, much more private. Super amazing job, awesome view!

On the end, where the black wall is, you've lost the long view. I would have kept the long view instead of boxing it in.
Was that balcony designed to handle all that extra weight?
That's what occurred to my mind, too. But the balcony is beautiful, however!
It's not hanging out of the building.....so it should be able to hold much more than this actually 🙂
It's a terrace, not a balcony, so I think that there's a regular flat beneath it. It's like a flat part on the roof. (If you pause at 0:19, you can see a railing in the right upper corner, that's another terrace)

Idk, could humidity make it a flabbier parquet along the time? I don't remember seeing an outside stave before, maybe there's a reason….
