My dad passed away earlier this year and left a FULL garage of things I know nothing about! I’ve since become the maintenance woman at the home he and my mother raised us in. It’s thanks to people like you that I’ve learned how to do SO MUCH BY MYSELF!!! It’s truly empowering and I thank you xx
my brother's father in law passed away, and my bro asked me if I would like any tool his F-I-L might have left. I said I could use a sander, so I was given his orbital sander. Thanks for this video, now I know how to fix it up and use it!
Great video super simple but well done and very helpful women who aren't tool friendly, I myself love my tools and know how each one works and what it's used for! Keep making great videos!😁
Seriously! My velcro piece came right off and I freaked out thinking I broke my husband's new sander...this video cleared everything up and now I know how to maintain the sander.
Looks simple enough. I have a Jitter sander however. The wife and I are getting ready to sand the back deck rails and posts. Then paint them again. Going to be an all day job. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the video Dennis.
That will definitely be a job! I have to do the same thing soon...thinking about upgrading the railings, so maybe have a video coming soon. :) Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching, Sandra! I don't have one of those sanders, but I believe there are three T10 torx screws that hold the platen onto the sander. You can see them on the face where the sandpaper goes. You can ignore the philips screw at the very tip because it holds the clip block for the platen. It you remove the three T10 screws, you should be able to remove and replace the platen.
Thanks for watching! I do! If you will click on the 'Playlists' link on my channel.....check out the 'Workshop' playlist. I have several woodshop related videos and will be posting more soon! Thanks!
Also, my best advice is to spend time on shop fixtures and jogs for your first few projects. These will help hone your skills and figure out your work flow the way you want it. If you make a mistake on a shop fixture, you are the only one that will know it, but you learn in the process. Best of luck to you!!
My 18 volt Ryobi sander is very similar. It is nice ti be able to get pads for them. I have seen them at the store too. I could probably get them cheaper online from other places. The dust extraction is mediocre with mine so I was wondering of there is a better pad for it. That might be something similar to Festool's Jetstream pads. What I like about the Ryobi pad is that they are a simple design without holes that seem to fit just one (very expensive) sander. The only reason I know anything about Festool is we used to own a bunch of those tools when my dad had a cabinet business. Their one and only con is the price and they are very expensive.
Thank you for watching! Most replacement velcro backs come with velcro peel-and-stick adhesive, makes it easy. If you are re-sticking an old velcro, contact cement works well. Make sure to remove all dust as it will reduce the effectiveness of the glue.
Thanks for watching, Kevin! Yes sir, that is the brake. I've looked everywhere I can think of and I can't find a replacement. Seems they discontinued it a long time ago and nobody had any on the shelf.
I have an old ryobi orbital sander that uses 4 1/2 in disks. I can't find that size. Can I use 5 inch? Would I have to change the sander pad to accommodate the 5 inch? Help! I'm a 70+ widow and trying to maintain my independence. Thanks.
Thanks for watching, Marsha! 5 inch discs should work ok. If you sand into inside corners, you might find the edges of the paper wear prematurely as they will extend slightly past the edges of the sanding pad. If you can find a 5 inch pad that fits your sander, then you will have no issues at all. If most of your sanding is on flat surfaces, I'd use the 5 inch discs on the 4-1/2 inch pad and not worry about it. I hope this helps!
Very impressive video very gently explained. I have a very old 5 inch Random orbit sander . It has three holes for the screws not four. and the plate has 8 holes on the out side and 8 smaller holes for dust to escape. I am having difficulty in getting the back pad. Could you please help. If I have your e mail i can send you the pictures. Thank you
I'm not sure what part you're looking for....here's a link to a parts diagram for our sanders. Not all the parts are available thru this vendor, but if you can tell me which part, I might be able to help: www.toolpartspro.com/Ryobi-Parts/Ryobi-RS240-Parts.html
Hey great video was wondering if you could offer some assistance. I also have the Ryobi 2418 and i tried replacing the pad. The replacement pad didn’t have the extra 4 tiny holes and the pad wouldnt fit right on the sander. I saw the replacement in the video did have the 4 extra holes. I clicked the link that you posted but when i looked at the demo pic the 4 tiny holes werent there. Do you know where i could find the exact same replacement like in your video?
Thanks for watching! The two links I list in the video description will take you to replacement pads. Both pads have the screw holes. The first one has 8 holes, you use 4 of them to line up on your sander holes. The 2nd one,for newer sanders, has 4 holes, here's the link for it: amzn.to/2XYTKPM I hope that helps!
Thanks for watching, Cheryl! Try going to ereplacementparts.com and type in your sander model number. Maybe they'll have parts and you can find a replacement for that part.
That's strange. Is the replacement pad thinner than the original pad? If so, the screws may be too long for the new pad and causing the rotation to bind.
Thanks for watching! Yes, some of the hook and loop pads are not that great. I've had similar issues. Some of the aftermarket ones can be glued to your pad and make things a lot better.
Thanks for watching. For a screw-attached pad, there is no waiting period required. If you are replacing a glue-on pad, then you would need to allow the glue to cure.
Thanks for watching, Pamela! What is preventing the screw removal? Are the screws stripped out? Or maybe they are a different type of head requiring a different driver (square, torx, something like that?)?

Thank you so much, Bron! This is the real reason I got started making YT videos....I'm so glad this is helpful to you!
I have this exact sander and was hoping there was a video on it. Thank you!!! Very helpful:)

Thanks for this. "snug em up" love it!
LOL! Thanks for watching, Julie!
Very informative video Thanks Dennis!
Thanks for watching, Abel!
Dennis, do you know how to replace the sanding plate for a black and decker 20 V handheld sander?
Thanks for watching, Sandra! I don't have one of those sanders, but I believe there are three T10 torx screws that hold the platen onto the sander. You can see them on the face where the sandpaper goes. You can ignore the philips screw at the very tip because it holds the clip block for the platen. Thanks for watching, Charles! I agree....Festool equipment is awesome, but I just can't afford their prices.
Thank you for share! Greetings from Brazil
Thanks for watching, Paulo!
What sort of glue do you use to stick the velclor back on?
Thank you for watching! Most replacement velcro backs come with velcro peel-and-stick adhesive, makes it easy. If you are re-sticking an old velcro, contact cement works well. Make sure to remove all dust as it will reduce the effectiveness of the glue.
That plastic ring. I think it's the brake. It says discontinued when I search it. Well mine broke. Are there alternatives for it?
Thanks for watching, Kevin! Yes sir, that is the brake. I've looked everywhere I can think of and I can't find a replacement. Seems they discontinued it a long time ago and nobody had any on the shelf.
Gracias por el consejo, pensaba comprar una nueva, agradezco aun más por la traducción 👍
Gracias por mirar, Bertha

What is the brand and model of your sander? Thanks for watching!
Hi Dennis, any idea where I can buy the plastic round "key"? Mine has disintegrated.
Hi Sean, thanks for watching! What type sander do you have (make and model)?
Hi Dennis, it's exactly like yours.
I'm not sure what part you're looking for....here's a link to a parts diagram for our sanders. Not all the parts are available thru this vendor, but if you can tell me which part, I might be able to help: www.toolpartspro.com/Ryobi-Parts/Ryobi-RS240-Parts.html
@@dwcoffey this is it. Thanks for the parts diagram. Key #23 Part #975239-001
Ah, gotcha....that's the brake. Here's the only place I found it available:

That yellow piece underneath the pad broke on mine. How do I replace it?
Thanks for watching, Cheryl! Try going to ereplacementparts.com and type in your sander model number. Maybe they'll have parts and you can find a replacement for that part.
I'm finding if i turn the screws tightly, it prevents the disk from rotating.
That's strange. Is the replacement pad thinner than the original pad? If so, the screws may be too long for the new pad and causing the rotation to bind.
the holes for screws dont line up on mine. it has a 4 1/2" pad. i bought a 5" replacement
Mine requires the same size pad for replacement, otherwise the holes won't line up. Thanks for watching.
The 41/2 is obsolete errrr
what was the distance between the screw holes? looking for more than 1 1/8 in
The hole spacing on the pads for this sander are 1". Thanks for watching!
Will this orbital sander work on finishing Corian counter tops?
Thanks for watching! I have never refinished Corian tops, so not sure about that.
Thank you 🙏

Donde puero comprar el pad en México??
I'm sorry, Luis, I don't know of a Mexican supplier.
My brand new makati is not holding after only 6 pads
Thanks for watching! Yes, some of the hook and loop pads are not that great. I've had similar issues. Some of the aftermarket ones can be glued to your pad and make things a lot better.
other video says wait 24 hrs before using
Thanks for watching. For a screw-attached pad, there is no waiting period required. If you are replacing a glue-on pad, then you would need to allow the glue to cure.
A simple solution but I cant remove the screws.
Thanks for watching, Pamela! What is preventing the screw removal? Are the screws stripped out? Or maybe they are a different type of head requiring a different driver (square, torx, something like that?)?
