This is a great idea. I even have most of the materials. I've been storing up sanders with bad plates. It's almost as much for a new plate as a new sander costs. I've been very impressed with Menard's store brand sander.
Thanks mate, I’ve been plagued with this over the years having bought about 4 replacement pads for my Bosch - strangely I still have two old ones so will convert both as back ups. Great vid as always, thanks to you and your viewers
Thank you very much for making this video! This solution seems very promising. Your review of this sander (August 2020) helped me a lot, because you discussed your experience of owning and using the sander over the long term. Thanks again!
Fantastic idea, my budget Sander is not sticking at the moment and current circumstances prevents me from buying a new budget Sander and I can't get a replacement parts, so this is perfect for me. Thank you, you've made me smile 😜🤣😀
You are supposed to spray both mating surfaces it’s true. 20 min seems long however. The can of spray adhesive should state how much let up time it wants for both surfaces to become tacky before joining.
Fingèrs crossed that it works well. The velcro I used came from Axminster tools was Hermes brand and self adhesive, but it only seems to be available in 110mm wide strips. The biggest issue with a random orbit sander will probably be heat - if the machine is used for long periods without a break, the glue may start to break down. Now you have lots of spare velcro it will be easy to make specialized sanding blocks to suit your projects, and use up those old discs that still have a bit of life left in them!
@Casual DIY ...just a tip, i've been using spray adhesives (3M) for about 35yrs... if you want a more permanent adhesion you need to spray both the plate and the velcro let them setup (gass off) then put them together.... more or less these sprays are just contact cements just a consumer version of what they use to glue headlines in cars.... some of the cans of spray will even have two sets of instructions , one for temporary bond and one for permanent.....
I don't think I did, can't remember 😅 all in all I bought the cheap replacement for £7 and I still use it. The same replacement pad. Although the one I made worked just as well.
That's a great cheap repair, just take care when removing the pads ease them off slowly don't rive them off. Like you say Tomasz it's up to the strength of the glue now time will tell. Tony
Great thing to know. I broke 2 cheap sanders, so maybe I go for Makita too now as you managed to fix the problem. Was thinking if a laser cutter could be made to cut the velcro. I mean if it works, then you could quickly cut several replacement parts.
Generally, using this type of glue, you apply it to both items and wait until you can touch it without it coming off on your finger, though it's still tacky. The can will explain applications. Once both are "dry," you get one shot, because wherever it touches it sticks, well, like glue. You can use a couple sockets in two opposite holes to line up the pad when pressing it down. Just find two that fit relatively tightly in the holes. For smaller holes, dowels are, obviously, a better choice.
Ahh gr8 stuff,it just so happens that my palm sander and detail sander are starting to peel from the base where the hook and loop is attached.Have a guess what im buying 2morrow.
Great idea! My first idea for the glue would have been something like „3M feathering disc adhesive“ which is used to glue pads to sanders not having hook and loop. Hope you are able to get the velcro off when it needs replacement or another session of sanding the sander 😂Anna
I was wondering, is it possible to fit 150mm pad on this 125mm Makita sander. It uses almost the same watt motor as the model 6030 which is 150mm pad, so I think it should handle it ok. Can u do such experiment?
You can but the sanding disc will go over the sanders pad which means there will be no pressure going onto the wood from that part of the sanding disc which makes it pointless.
Contact adhesive (Evostick) that wont come off!! seems to be common with the Makita (or other brands as well?) a well designed failure, As I only use corded sanders (battery's are too heavy to use after about 30 mins on walls) I might change brands
I was able to use it only for a month, don't have access to my workshop at the moment so the test will resume from middle of June. But had no issues over that time. So ye seems to be a quite solid solurion.
Yes I do, but it's the same thing I make so no point of making videos on it. Currently struggling with time so big projects and builds will have to wait unfortunately
i'm all for cost cutting as some top manufacturers try to ripoff customers when buying spares etc.... The "add ons" are where they bump up their profits.....
Did you factor in the spray adhesive, hole punch and Velcro, the hole punch alone would be more than £4. What size is the hole punch also? It’s a great idea though I’m in this position at the minute and was looking at buying a new pad, also have you any verdict on how the hook and loop you glued on compared to the aftermarket pad you bought. Keep up with the great videos
Sanding a sander. We have come full loop. I'm hooked!
🤣😂 yes we did
And looped!

It worked for me 👍
@@CasualDIY I'll give it a shot!! Thanks.

Thank you kindly for watching 👍😁

Yes I do follow up review videos for long term use for most of my tools

Hehe thank you for watching 👍😁
Great idea and I love the creative way that you created the holes in velcro.
Hehe thanks 👍🤣
If it comes loose, spray the adhesive on both the pad and the velcro. Let it dry for 20 minutes and put them together. That creates a permanent bond.
Cool thank you, great tip

What a brilliant idea. Something I would never had thought of. Well done.
Neither did I lol. Thanks to my viewers leaving comments under my last video 👍😁
Off to the fabric store today. I have a a couple of sanders in dire need of some tlc. Thanks for the tip a year later.
Glad to help👍
Thank you this solved my problems with discs flying off.
I'm glad I was able to help👍 thank you for watching my video.
Nice to see another video by you Tomasz, always entertaining
Thank you for watching 😀👍
Great tip! I will be buying some velcro soon.
Thank you for watching
Good little tip.Need to remember this one and save some money.
Oh yes, Could save some $$$
Another great video Tomas, thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching
A great segment Tomas, thanks.

Yes that's what I'm worried about, it's the heat but so far used it for about 1h constant and it's still ok
Works out at 50 pence per new repair even more of a bargain plus adhesive of course. If spray adhesive fails try contact adhesive like Evo Stick
Yes seems to be the best price to get this problem sorted

Well done ! Thanks for the idea!

Looks like a great fix and thanks for sharing a great idea and remember#stay safe and make. 🍺🍺👍👍
Thanks mate👍😁
Did you ever do the follow up with how how you got on after sticking on the hook and loop?
I don't think I did, can't remember 😅 all in all I bought the cheap replacement for £7 and I still use it. The same replacement pad. Although the one I made worked just as well.
thank you worth trying it when my boch and Mikita sanders
Brilliant I’m definitely gonna do this! Thanks
Thank you for watching 👍
Good idea mate. Time to buy some velcro,!
Seems to be working, so far 😁
That's a great cheap repair, just take care when removing the pads ease them off slowly don't rive them off.
Like you say Tomasz it's up to the strength of the glue now time will tell. Tony
Thank you. Im hoping it will hold well 👍

Thanks for watching 👍😁 I think laser could put the velcro on fire

Thanks very much for the video. Great tip
Thank you for watching 👍
If the spray adhesive doesn't work try contact spay that will work but you have to spray both pieces so it sticks
Good to know thanks 👍
How did the glue hold up when the sander was hot?
No issues at all 👍
Ahh gr8 stuff,it just so happens that my palm sander and detail sander are starting to peel from the base where the hook and loop is attached.Have a guess what im buying 2morrow.
Hehe just in time 👍
Great video- thanks!
Thank you for watching 👍
Great cheap fix.
Yes it seems to be 😁👍
Awesome idea, I'd like to try that too as my pads only last about 6 months. What did you use to punch the holes?
A dowell maker 🤣

Tomas, what size leather punch did you use?
1cm I think it was
It was a dowell cutter 🤣
Great video! I'm late to the party and finding 150mm Velcro/Hook material is proving a bit impossible. :o(
I found some on Etsy for £4. 150mm by about 125cm.
Great! Might have glued better if you'd used a tin of red paint to weigh it down rather than the green!!! I like your videoas
🤣👍
Great idea, also try using a hot glue gun to adhere the sanding disc down, it does work, Ive tried it.
but hot glue application is slow to apply and heal quickly as soon as temperature drop , how did you do it ?!
@@XXXmelXodyXXX I used a hot glue gun, it really is quick to apply, it worked for me.
nice job
thanks
Can’t find the volume
Is the velcro still holding up ?

Top man
Do you ever make anything or do you just reviews and how to on tools
Yes I do, but it's the same thing I make so no point of making videos on it. Currently struggling with time so big projects and builds will have to wait unfortunately
That's a shame mate as it would be good to watch how to build something
i'm all for cost cutting as some top manufacturers try to ripoff customers when buying spares etc.... The "add ons" are where they bump up their profits.....
You are absolutely right
Nothing more needed but NICE ONE...... Check out the video....ha ha

I used my wifes bra 32 44 cc. Works a treat
Concerning.... but it it works for you 👍🤣
Do your wife know how you use her and her chest size to make incredibly bad jokes online? You got the attention. That must feel good.
