The flowers on my lavender started turning brown. I suspect from overwatering since I watered it almost everyday since our days was super dry and warm where I am. It is in a pot with proper drainage too. Is it a lost cause or can I just cut the brown flowers?
Hey Steven. If the leaves are green, then it may be that the flowers are just done blooming, but the plant is ok. However, the flowers stay on the plants for several weeks. So, check on your plant every day. If the stems/leaves turn brown, then it's definitely getting rotten.
Hey Linh, in a pot with holes yes. What do you mean by on the side? And do you mean to put a tray under the pot so that the water goes out from the holes into the tray?
Yes, I do. It’s my first time growing this year and I’m surprised they look so healthy and blooming so beautifully. So, I am following your instructions to not water it everyday and wait until the soil gets dry. Is it normal for old leaves to turn grayish? Well the top part looks lush and healthy but the bottom touching the soil is like grayish but not yellow.
I have a lavender it was so pretty and green then we went for a trip when we got back the purple leaves were gray and died and the stems were turning yellowish green I have no clue what happened
I love lavender, I have try so many times to keep it alive but for some reason it always dries and dies. I live in south Texas idk if the weather might be the reason.
@@AnnasViolets Anna, very timely video. I overwatered, plant appears to be dying and looks all wilted. I was going to take it out of the pot and put it directly into the ground. How do you determine what a rotten root looks like so that I don’t clip a good root? This is my first lavender plant and I didn’t realize they want to remain relatively dry!
Thank you for this video, actually my potted lavender is just wilted. I used to water it every morning but after it started to wilt, I stopped watering it for 2 days and then I noticed the stems were getting dry, so I started watering but it is not very greenish anymore and is still wilted. I am not sure how I can help it. It has been shedding too from the first day I bought it.
Hey Molood, it may be already overwatered. It's hard to say without seeing, but if it was shedding, it seems it was already overwatered when you bought it. Try to put it in a warm place, where the soil will get dry quicker or maybe even repot it
I bought five lavender (Spanish) plants last August and planted in Garden soil. They look great for the Summer and Autumn. We had a few snow and cold Winter in NYC. In early Spring I trimmed about half way of the stems and spread plant food around the perimeter. I lightly water them every day (maybe I shouldn’t), but nothing happened. The plants are brown. My other plants next to them already turned greens and blooming. Don’t look why? Are they rotten dead? Anyway I can revive them. I could send you pictures if I have you email. Thanks
Hey Ana, yes, trimming too low may damage the plant, but if it has green growth, it will be fine. Unfortunately, there is nothing special you can do in this case. Just take care of it as you would normally do and it should grow just fine 🌸
Please help me. I bought a potted lavender and have it in full sun. I water it every second day cause I noticed it wilted if it wasn't being watered every certain time but this time I forgot! It went about two days without water and it got dry, I touch its leaves and they're all crisp 😭. The stems are wood like, I've felt through them so I know it's still green/alive but it looks dead. How do I fix her?
My lavender thrives best when I don’t water it as much? Which I don’t understand, it gets direct sunlight, living in Texas I figured water would help it? A month ago it almost died , due to me watering it too much.
Hi Anne I'm back I bought another lavender plant I need your tips so it won't die on me. I live in Arizona. Question here is it suppose to be in sun because the other time I put it in sun and it started dying on me. So I need lots of tips right now it's under my porch
Hey Vero, the very hot sun, but also overwatering can cause problems. I think in Arizona it's way too hot for lavender. So, in your case, maybe try growing it in semi-shade?
Hi Anna thanks again for answering me. So you would probably recommend a little sun in the morning and shade the rest of the day right? Also when is a good time to transplant it? Thanks so much and sorry for so much questions.
Thanks for this information. Now after watching this video, I think my lavender might not survive where I planted them. I have clay soil. I mixed potting soil, compost and landscapers mix (which is a small shredded bark with soil mix) in the flower beds to plant my lavender but I had no idea it needed sand for drainage. Should I dig them up and add sand to the soil mixture?? I also fertized them right after planting with a bloom booster. I should have done more research before planting.
@rosesarered3904 how are yours going now? Mine is in clay soil too that I did try to dig a lot of it out and put in potting mix. Mine looked gorgeous for nearly 2 years. Now they are going yellow. I'm sad. I was so proud of my lavander garden. I think I will try to to replant them and hope they don't all die.
hi anne, I've been trying to grow lavender in tropical climate. Some of the common problem than i've face is that the new shoots (leaves) tend to turn greyish and rot off. Another problem was the bottom part of the leaves turn yellowish. Hope you can help me identify the problem. Thank you😊.
Hey Anthony, I guess the tropical climate is not very suitable for lavender, as it's very humid for them. It seems it's struggling with very high air humidity. Maybe you can plant it in a pot, and grow it indoors on a sunny windowsill, using a dehumidifier. But I think it's too much effort for one plant
Lavenders are adapted to hot, dry climates (thus their silver leaves) so rainforests with water-retaining soil and high precipitation aren't good for them.
I had my new lavender plant in big container and with 4 inches of rain and a little of my watering I didn't realize how soggy of a mess my plant had been sitting in and I removed the plant and the roots are brown can it be revived,Thank you,I had planted in miracle grow plant mix? What can I do if anything?
Hey Lisa, maybe repot it. If the soil is very wet and it's raining, the soil will stay wet for a long time. It really depends if the roots are rotten or not yet. If the roots are still fine, repotting will save the plant
Just bought lavender repotted it and now the leaves and flowers are drooping. It's in direct sunlight for the 6 to 8 hours I haven't watered it because I'm not sure if that's the issue. I'm using the cactus, palm and citrus soil by miracle gro. Not sure what else to do.
Hey Toni, I made a video exactly about it: ruclips.net/video/O5rzJcu97sI/видео.html For now, put it in semi-shade. It needs to get used to your conditions and repotting is always stressful
@@AnnasViolets hi... my lavender got heat stressed and is all droopy . It got about 4 hours of direct sun and has been in shade for 4 hours now but the condition has not improved at all. I am very worried. will my plant die? how long does it take for lavender to revive from heat stress? please help
i don't know what's wrong with my lavender... i haven't changed the soil til now since i bought it.. it wilts around the afternoon. when i water it, it perks back up. come next day, same thing happens, drooping leaves again, i checked the soil, it's still moist underneath but dry on top...i water it again and it perks up once more.. few days of this happening, but now some of leaves are turning brown and dried...i'm confused, it gets alive after watering but i'm afraid that it's being overwatered at the same time, i don't know what to do now. btw, i also tried to repot it to a clay pot after a week because i thought it has more air than in its original black plastic seedling bag... nothing works.. i clipped the browned dried stems and leaves hoping new leaves would sprout... it still has green leaves but the browning still hasn't stopped.. T_T
@@AnnasViolets thanks for your quick reply, I went ahead and re-potted my lavender into a new type of soil and this morning there is no shedding, however, it still looks sad, hoping it will bounce back. You have a lot of good stuff on this channel, and a lot of knowledge about plants.
Hi there, I am simply not lucky with my lavender. I grow the relatively large plant in a large pot on my balcony, which is very sunny and dry. The soil drains quickly and I have a "safety pot" so the water can go out on the bottom. Whenever it left its heads hanging, and nothing helped, I watered it a little and only if the top layer of the soil was already dry. However, the heads kept hanging down and the leaves turned dry. I really don't know what to do! :(
Hey Melina, maybe the problem is the "safety pot". Do you mean that the water accumulates in the second pot, under the pot with lavender. Maybe this causes the issue, if there is no air ventilation through the holes to the roots

Well the top part looks lush and healthy but the bottom touching the soil is like grayish but not yellow.
Yes, if it's only at the bottom, it's absolutely normal. The stems at the bottom turn woody with the time too
I have a lavender it was so pretty and green then we went for a trip when we got back the purple leaves were gray and died and the stems were turning yellowish green I have no clue what happened
I love lavender, I have try so many times to keep it alive but for some reason it always dries and dies. I live in south Texas idk if the weather might be the reason.
Oh, yes. Several people told me already that they die in Texas. Maybe the air is too hot for them.
same with me in AZ. bummer for us 😞
Is the humidity too much for them?🤔
Thank you for the video my lavander is dying coz of overwatering!! So shall i cut them? Or just leave it and it will revive ?
If it's dying, I would take it out of the pot and remove all rotten roots, then repot in fresh soil
@@Roamey71 If you slightly pull the roots, they will easily get off, if they are dead
What about too much sun? I live in the Desert area of California and it’s summertime. I planted my lavender and three days later, but it was dead.
Try to put it in a warm place, where the soil will get dry quicker or maybe even repot it
@@AnnasViolets Thanks a lot for your advice, I will try it, I hope it helps
I bought five lavender (Spanish) plants last August and planted in Garden soil. They look great for the Summer and Autumn. We had a few snow and cold Winter in NYC. In early Spring I trimmed about half way of the stems and spread plant food around the perimeter. I lightly water them every day (maybe I shouldn’t), but nothing happened. The plants are brown. My other plants next to them already turned greens and blooming. Don’t look why? Are they rotten dead? Anyway I can revive them. I could send you pictures if I have you email. Thanks
Hi. I believe they are either frozen from winter, or the pruning was too deep. You shouldn't prune them in the wooden parts
Overfertilized?
@@COVID-19_Crab Yes, that's also possible
I had it in the window but its been really hot 🔥 lately i think the heat did it was fine when i first got it idk what to do with it
If it is not well-established or it was just bought, maybe try to get it adjusted to your environement step by step
Nice video! I love the smell of lavender! Are they as easy to grow as orchids?
Do you still think that it's easy to grow orchids? :)
@@gabybiz6089 Oh no, did any of these tips help you?
I think I might have trimmed my lavender too low. Not sure if I ruined it. There is a little green but not too much . Any suggestions?
Hey Ana, yes, trimming too low may damage the plant, but if it has green growth, it will be fine. Unfortunately, there is nothing special you can do in this case. Just take care of it as you would normally do and it should grow just fine 🌸
❤❤❤❤
Please help me. I bought a potted lavender and have it in full sun. I water it every second day cause I noticed it wilted if it wasn't being watered every certain time but this time I forgot! It went about two days without water and it got dry, I touch its leaves and they're all crisp 😭. The stems are wood like, I've felt through them so I know it's still green/alive but it looks dead. How do I fix her?
Maybe you can slightly trim it, keep watering normally and if it's still alive, it will grow new stems
My lavender thrives best when I don’t water it as much? Which I don’t understand, it gets direct sunlight, living in Texas I figured water would help it? A month ago it almost died , due to me watering it too much.
Yes, I think overwatering is N1 problem with these plants.
Hi! My lavender was doing fine but only the bottom part of my plant is getting brown but its blooming, what should i do?
Is it rotten brown or just dry brown? Maybe it's just old leaves, which is normal
Oh, yes, I think replanting them is a good idea. Clay soil is very dangerous for them. They get rotten so easily
@@AnnasViolets Thank you, I did replant them. I feel much better now about them surviving. 🙂
Hi, Anna. Can I just use lawn sand, pumice and perlite for my Lavender ?
Hey, I would still use a portion of soil, then add sand, perlite and pumice. Maybe this combination would be better
@@AnnasViolets Thank you for your advice. Looks like its working now :)
@@windtalkers7 That's awesome. Thank you 🌸
hi anne,
I've been trying to grow lavender in tropical climate.
Here in Brazil, with higher humidity, Lavandula dentata and Lavandula stoechas grow the best.
My lavender have know smell…. If u touch it u can smell it on ur hands ??
I had my new lavender plant in big container and with 4 inches of rain and a little of my watering I didn't realize how soggy of a mess my plant had been sitting in and I removed the plant and the roots are brown can it be revived,Thank you,I had planted in miracle grow plant mix? What can I do if anything?
Hey Lisa, maybe repot it. If the soil is very wet and it's raining, the soil will stay wet for a long time. It really depends if the roots are rotten or not yet. If the roots are still fine, repotting will save the plant
@@AnnasViolets Thank you Idid repot it,I see brown roots,I'm just hoping it will survive.
Now I know I’m over watering thanks!!
Thank you 💜
Just bought lavender repotted it and now the leaves and flowers are drooping.
💜
Thank you ❤️ Do you grow lavender?
My lavender plant, dried completly..looks dead, can i save it? Thanks
Hey Christie, it really depends on how much the plant is damaged. It's hard to tell
@@AnnasViolets ok thanks for answering
Is shedding of leaves also a symptom of overwatering?
Yes
@@AnnasViolets thanks for your quick reply, I went ahead and re-potted my lavender into a new type of soil and this morning there is no shedding, however, it still looks sad, hoping it will bounce back. You have a lot of good stuff on this channel, and a lot of knowledge about plants.
Oh, sorry, just saw your comment. Thank you so much! I hope your lavender recovered. How is it now?
Hi there,
I am simply not lucky with my lavender.
What do I do if I let the plants die? Can I revive it?
Yes, of course. I have a separate video about it. Please have a look in Lavender playlist
Hi friend if a lavender brown and crunchy it's dead right? No way of saving it?
Hey Vero, yes, it seems so
Hi thank you so much for answering I will. Buy another lavender plant and u give me tips please

Hey Taliyah, in the beginning they need a bit time to adapt, but once they are established, they are pretty low maintenance plants. 🌸
Do they need a lot of Sun?
Yes :)
I’ve tried propagating lavender from seeds many many times & it never comes to anything🥺

Hey Lisa, yes drainage holes are important
Curly and thin leaves on some stems while few others are like yours freshy beautiful fluffy and attractive mmmmmm
It maybe a sign that the roots started to rot. But it is also possible if the plant was not watered for a long time. It shall recover, when you water, if that was the reason
@@AnnasViolets ok, I watered and moved to the sunniest spot but it is late, no improvement. No problem I learnt the lesson.
I took a risk and cur two third of the height and took the plant out separated it from other companions in pot, i removed soil, flushed the roots after removing the tired oned, and placed alone in a pot with new fresh soil then watered thoroughly and placed in the sunniest spot.
Will let you know?
You're so cute
Thank you 🌺
no matter what I do... these always die 😭
I just got my first one last week and it already drooped and started drying out 😩
If you describe in which conditions it was, I'll try to help
Maybe it's a shock from changing the environment. Can also be overwatering, if the soil was wet for a long time
@@AnnasViolets Thanks Anna 😀 The soil they came in was compressed to a sponge like material. I didn’t water much but when I removed the plant, the soil was soaked. now I cleaned up all roots and planted all in dry sandy soil. But not sure if there is any hope for them to come back to life.
@@AnnasViolets Thank you, I got it and it was green and bushy and flowered, then I watered it once because it was all the way dry and knew not to water it again.... my fiancé ended up watering it without me knowing lol. So I’ve repotted it with cactus soil, top off all of the dead flowers, and I’m pretty sure it’s still alive in the middle of the stems.
damn i overwatered thats why its dying
