You're pretty much bang on,. man. The vortigaunts were slaves to the Nihilanth, but now serve the Combine, it would seem, and having now totally had enough, are joining the humans when it comes round to hl2 time.
Adrien's job was to kill anything on way to Gordan Freeman (which is the main objective), he wasn't briefed because his captain was killed. The Black Ops job is to clean up what the Grunts couldn't do. Which means they will kill Gordan, Adrien, Aleins, and Scientists.
when I originally played Opposing Force on windows 98 way back in the day, this XEN section initiated a soundtrack from the CD. and I remember it being the coolest thing, but I don't hear it being played here, why not?
The storyline may be a little hazy but the combine and the aliens from xen had nothing to do with each other. vortigaunt and other aliens came to earth because they were slaves of the boss at the end of HL1. Anyway, I could be wrong. We'll just have to wait for ep3 to come out.

@ShinChan56798 That's a big reason why a number of us HATE Steam. Honestly, Steam can be a good resource for gaming but do I really need them to hold my hand playing a game? I think my comp should run the game just fine without them.

No, the combine come from another dimension. You find this out in either episode 1 or 2, i forget which one.

Yep. Better, in my opinion. On lower resolutions, the flashlight was barely functional from what i remember.
