    Imperial walkers were some of the most widely used assets of the Galactic Empire, leading key battles of the Galactic Civil War against the Rebel Alliance, including the Battle of Hoth. But, do they make sense? How do they compare to republic walkers like the AT-TE, or First Order Walkers like the AT-M6? That'll be the topic of discussion for today's Star Wars Legends lore video!

    Here’s the thing, when seeing the Imperial Walkers for the first time, on the big screen, marching across the snow plains of Hoth, in 1980, it didn’t need to make sense. Because it was absolutely incredible, I was there.

    • @bentonrp
      @bentonrp 3 года назад +30

      But did you know that it felt incredible BECAUSE it made sense? Despite what Eckhart says.
      Eckhart's right about it being inefficient for battle. However, that's the point; A lot of Imperial weaponize vehicles are inefficient for battle. This is intentional, and it adds to the story! :D
      It's one of those "You didn't notice, but your brain did," scenarios RLM likes to say.
      The Empire would rather build a thousand more TIE fighters quickly than spend time giving each side cannons or good peripheral vision past its own wings.
      The Empire would rather have a forward assault vehicle that goes in as thoughtless fodder by focusing on attacking forward, instead of diverting their attention left and right. That way command can look at their defeated line and know how to proceed.
      The Empire even took it a step further and said, "Why do we need to deploy troop transports if these vehicles are going in first anyway?" Who cares if we lose a bunch of them! They'll be on the actual attack vehicle, so they can be put immediately into battle!
      Ever notice how the TIE Fighters don't have lightspeed? They don't want you go going wherever you want, like X-Wings; They want you back at Command! Your ship may look tidier than an X-Wing, but it's all an illusion cuz it's a flying bomb.
      A lot of the ships have their own psychology like that. The AT-AT is scary because it makes no sense; It's kind of the Empire's way of saying, 'we can employ the absurd to attack you, and we'll still come out on top!'
      Or how, like, the Star Destroyers look kind of like castle towers in space. The ship looks like a horizon with this silhouette of a dominant structure peaking out of it somewhere from the background.
      I know because my uncle worked for The Empire. "We had such dreams then!" he used to say. I've given up on calling him a Nazi for it. So what we don't agree on politics, right? Peace.

    I'm not a Star Wars geek, so I can't give you an answer out of canon; however, I can give you one that would match reality. The first thing to recognize is that, according to the internet, Luke was 19 in A New Hope, which means that the Empire had less than two decades to build all this machinery, which is impossible. Look how long it takes for a modern military to adopt a new pistol, let alone a battle tank. The Empire's walkers are the Republic's walkers inherited.
    As mechanized cavalry, the walkers need significant support from infantry (and air forces). This is true today, and it has been true since cavalry rode horses, and it will be true until the sun blows up. What probably happened is that walkers were useful on desert planets where they were one element of set-piece battles -- i.e. large engagements -- and they proved useful as transport & gun platforms when part of a complete battle strategy. (E.g. they can climb dunes like camels, fire from behind them with a tiny profile, and step over obstacles, like wadis, that would stop smaller vehicles.) Manufacturers who made these machines have lobbyists and deep pockets, and senators need to be re-elected. With a few key senators, the manufacturers could keep walker production funded and kill any plans for replacement. And why not? As part of a larger, mixed-weapon strategy, they're good enough. Effective infantry and air support obviates their weaknesses. (Gotta fight in a forest? Not if you flatten it with a few massive bombs.)
    But what sort of thing do dictators do when they gain power? They have purges. Massive ones if the dictator in question is a self-aggrandizing, paranoid megalomaniac, like Palpatine. The military leadership was likely purged: marched to the wall and shot, sent to gulags to rot, or sent to re-education camps as slave labor. Now the military is led by sycophants promoted by whim rather than merit, which is no big deal because the Clone Wars are over, and peace reigns under the Emperor's benevolent hand. And since the military leadership is now populated by knuckle-heads, they don't understand how battles work; they just think they can throw a few walkers at the piss-ant rebels and job done, with predictable results.
    So, long story short, the reason they made sense is that they were used with strategic & tactical acumen, and funded by political gamesmanship. The reason they stopped making sense is strategic & tactical incompetence. My 2 cents, FWIW.

    AT-ATs would serve a much better purpose as long range weapon platforms. Imagine a group of walkers armed with massive battleship cannons mount on its sides and back taking up position 25 miles outside of Hoth base and shelling it mercilessly.

    • @alexmueller719
      @alexmueller719 6 лет назад +15

      Wouldn't work. The Hoth base still had an energy shield so the walkers would need to get closer then 25 miles. Because if the Star Destroyers can't shoot through the shield, then the walkers can't either.

      The Rebels were escaping from Hoth. So no the Empire did not have all the time in the world. But AT-ATs are good direct fire artillery platforms since they are well armored and tall enough that they can stay behind the front lines and shoot over the heads of more flexible vehicles.

    Completely agree with this video and it's something I've often thought myself. I love the AT-AT, in fact I'd say it's one of my favourite pieces of hardware in the Star Wars universe, but you're right, it's plagued with glaring design floors from a practical, combat related point of view.
    Pick up any book on military assault doctrine and it typically calls for as much speed and surprise as practically possibly when attacking a fortified location head on. The AT-AT fulfils neither of these requirements with it's slow, plodding progress. It's long legs push the centre of gravity so high that it becomes very top heavy and would be highly unstable across anything other than fairly flat terrain.
    As you also pointed out, the troops ability for embarking or disembarking an AT-AT rapidly is severely hampered by the fact that the transport compartment is a good 40 feet from the ground.
    Lastly, the fields of fire of its weapon systems are incredibly limited making it easy to attack from almost any angle with little to no ability to defend itself. In fact the only direction you wouldn't want to go up against one would be head on ... which makes the Rebels attack plan in the Battle of Hoth even more ridiculous as those speeders could have so easily come in from any other direction and picked them off with their tow cables at will.
    Present day engineers and defence contractors could design and build a walker type transport in the real world, but they haven't, and they won't - because it's completely impractical.

  • @Oddman1980
    @Oddman1980 6 лет назад +117

    Just looking at it from an engineering standpoint, I think wheels will be around thousands of years from now, no matter our technological advancement.
    One issue not really mentioned with the walkers in the video - they don't seem to have the ability to right themselves. If I trip and fall, I can get back up. My dog can lie down or stand up in an instant, or roll over on her back. Any walker used in a military setting would need these capabilities, which would make them very complex, mechanically. Which brings me back to my first sentence, mentioning that we will always be using wheels. They're too simple to ignore, they work too well, use very little energy compared to legs, and can even be used in un-powered applications.
    That said, I want to see a battle walker that isn't powered by magic space energy or batteries, but either a gas turbine or even a diesel. Intimidation? Imagine a walker running up, smoke pouring out, with an 8V-71 screaming along, flailing against a hydraulic pump. Sure, you'd hear it coming, but if it can stand up on its own, and move *fast*, it would be trouble.

      Oddman1980 Weight dispersion would be a big issue as well.

    • @hafor2846
      @hafor2846 6 лет назад +19

      A rule of thumb I learned in the military to test if a tank can drive through a certain area (e.g. a bridge):
      Have one soldier climb another one. Then have the lower one jump. If the ground holds, you can drive your tank there, because threads disperse the weight so well that two people jumping exerts essentially the same force on the ground (of course, threads do that over a much larger area). So 60 tons with threads and roughly 160 kgs with legs have the same impact.
      And a walker takes all that weight and puts it on legs. An AT-AT would probably sink about halfway into the ground with every step and destroy most bridges and streets...

    I always imagined as a kid that AT-AT walkers were only needed because it was Hoth, and the primary target was a huge shield generator. Being as Star Wars was cannibalized during the 90s for extra content and it's iconic imagery, the AT-AT started being used as a general tank more and more, despite it being the perfect armor for knocking out defensive structures and large targets. That's why they have the AT-ST for support in the areas they lack.

    Being Canadian, and knowing how slippery snow is and being accustomed to forever going over rough inaccessible territory, I could really see the value in those walkers. That is the only vehicle I've ever seen that could possibly travel across the second largest country in the world from coast to coast to coast to the southern border with no roads. Those feet are huge for stability and have a deep, square tread for grip. Rivers and small lakes wouldn't stop a walker. A thick forest wouldn't stop it. Impressive.

Armour that section up and have a small view port and dual mass drive cannon/ front and rear mass drive canons on top and to you have a winner. Also remove the legs and troop compart (add repulser lift and make a repulser version) it would have to be lighter armoured but would increase manouverability.

    The AT-AT can be easily knocked over no doubt. The AT-DP doesn’t have more weapons besides that ball turret laser cannon which doesn’t have much range of motion. And the AT-ST which I do like but it doesn’t have enough armor & stability in its legs to be more effective. That’s my take on what I think for the major walkers used by the Empire. If the Empire took more time & planning out their usage of walkers then I think most of the weak points can be mitigated or at least covered in some fashion. Not only that the walkers could be a lot more different.

      Just because you only see a few models of walkers does not mean the Empire does not use thousands of different ground vehicles.
      In my head cannon the only reason why General Veers took the AT-ATs into battle at Hoth was because only they had powerful enough blaster cannons to take out the shield. He was more concerned with defeating the rebels quickly than efficiently. He also was not worried about flanks or rear shots because he knew the armor was strong enough to take any hits from what the rebel likely had.

    Don’t forget that in a actual lore fight they would have been by themselves like in the battle of hoth, they were supposed to be protected at all times on all angles by AT-ST’s which not only provided the tons of extra fire power but also stopped any attempt to remove the AT-AT from battle.
    Also the submersible version of the AT-AT was more maneuverable and still boasted the same amount of fire power.

  • @lucofparis4819

    The only way I could see Imperial walkers work is through high specialization. Keep the AT-AT line, but scrap the troops compartment. Create new variants instead :
    AT-SG : put a powerful shield generator instead of the troops. They cover against surgical orbital strikes, bombing runs, and artillery barrage. The height allows high shield coverage, housing low altitude gunships and dropships.
    AT-MP : Missile Platform instead of troops. The missiles can go through the shield cover then speed up and strike any incoming aircraft or vehicle.
    AT-AP : Artillery Platform. Pack as much turbolasers and heavy turbolaser as possible, and unleash Hell by simply making the walker stand slightly outside of the shield in order to fire the cannons. No airspeeder able to wrap a tow cable around its legs this time. Either it's shot by being too slow, or it rams the shields too fast and gets blown up. Just have antipersonnel hover tanks waiting in the shields with stormtroopers in proper troop transports, and some speeder bikes, and you are good to go. The idea is that the whole walker squad with good variety complete each other, and acts as a moving frontline. Nothing remains alive behind, and nothing can stop the giant war machines. They just crush your terrain defence after defence.

Such squad of walkers would follow a predictable path that would allow their enemy to bury his own walkers/pieces of artillery. But it is pretty much a one trick pony before the armor squads start to include recon speeders equipped with powerful sonars, or whatever sensors replace them in the SW Galaxy.

    Not sure why, but this got me thinking of how Earth would deal with an Imperial attack assuming the Death Star was off the table:
    Earth Tanks: faster than AT-AT and might use anti-armor shells
    Earth Fighters: Longer combat range and missiles can pull off moves that can probably cause issues with Tie variants.
    Star Destroyer: Above Atmosphere Nuclear Detonation screen followed by 2-3 missiles salvos with MIRV first to stress the shields, second to take them down and EMP(Ion canon Damage) third as clean up.

It wasn't until somebody had the brilliant idea to use the tow cables and trip the AT-ATs did the Rebels have any success against them. X-Wing lasers, which were capable of tearing through capital ship armor opened them like tin cans.

    I feel like in a world where hover transport is commonplace, there would be much less roads and smooth surfaces on the ground to make wheels and tracks as reliable as they are on Earth, where every place a ground combat could be fought has endured centuries of development specifically to make the area more easily traversed by wheels. Following that, it makes sense that the fictional physics of repulsorlifts might make them either more fuel-intensive or prone to failure than something that doesn't need constant upkeep to stay up and can just use the static power of legs.
    It's also conceivable that the idea behind the tall, tall AT-AT as opposed to the squat AT-TE is in order to make it less vulnerable to infantry and ground assault (and the Empire doesn't plan for not having air superiority), since all the important bits are way in the air. A cannon on top in that situation wouldn't work because it'd have to really crane around to hit ground targets, however you'd think they could still fit some heavy ground-targeting cannons onto the undercarriage, except if they did that it'd just be an elephant penis, and you can't do that for reasons. At least it gives Luke a place to plant his seed, I mean thermal detonators.

    I have to a agree with you on the empire walkers; you can get a better walker the can still do just as much damage by using an at-te with its main gun upgraded to a heavy laser cannon. The upgrade is so it can pierce the armor of a at-at.

    The reasons for using a walker.
    1. "They're used in terrain that is too rough for wheeled vehicles." (paraphrased from the video)
    The video was skeptical of this, claiming that wheeled vehicles can handle any terrain the walkers can. It should be pointed out however, that the reason tanks have tracks instead of wheels is because wheels cannot handle rough terrain very well. Thus the explanation makes perfect sense, in spite of the skepticism expressed in the video.
    2. "They're used on planets where repulsorlift vehicles are unstable." (paraphrased from the video)
    As we see in the first segment of Episode V, the engines on repulsorlift vehicles have to be calibrated to the environment. Another option has to be used during the time that it takes for such calibration to happen. The rebel base had been on Hoth long enough for the rebels to build a huge base, presumably weeks or months. Yet they had to use tuantauns for transportation because, in all of that time, they hadn't been able to adapt the speeders (repulsorlift vehicles) to the environment. So this explanation makes perfect sense as well, in spite of the skepticism expressed in the video. The use of walkers allowed the imperial ground forces to be dropped immediately instead of waiting weeks or months to adapt repulsorlift vehicles.
    3. "Why not use ships for troop transport?" (paraphrased from the video)
    When we watch Episode 1, we see the battledroids pushing their way through an energy shield. It's not easy. They have to lean into it and force their way through. If you've ever been in a car that had to do an sudden brake to avoid a crash, you can understand why you would not want to be moving at high speed when this happens. Not all energy shields can be seen and prepared for as the Gungan shield could. Examples of invisible shields include the deflector shields on the Imperial class Star Destroyers, along with most other starships, and the deflector shield that protected the second Death Star. Suddenly impacting against one of those invisible shields at high speed could be very detrimental to the health of the troops carried in the cargo compartment. Once again, going back to the example of the car, the impact does not need to total the car or even penetrate to the passenger compartment to cause a whiplash injury.

      1. That's a reason to use tracks, not a walker. Walkers, as a matter of physics, have greater ground pressure than wheeled *or* tracked vehicles, and hence will bog down in terrain that wheels can handle just fine. And let's just not look at the levels of force involved in a foot coming down - although that's worst in two-legged walkers.
      2. That does not disqualify tracks.
      3. I agree that aircraft are no solution, but for a different reason. Aircraft are more easily engaged, because they fly. And even if troop transports include some serious anti-gravity tech, a ground vehicle can carry heavier armour, weapons and shields than an aircraft, which means aircraft are far more easily destroyed when hit.
      That does not make aircraft useless, since they allow for a faster repositioning of units, and sometimes you'd rather lose troops than time. But that's a job the regular shuttle can handle just fine, so no reason for a specialised air transport.

    So one thing I noticed for the US military for example with their wheeled vehicles and their helicopters which can be seen in the Empire is that in urban and mountain terrain which are the future battlefields for the US military, legged vehicles would actually be an asset. Many times in Afghanistan, troops have been vulnerable to no only IED attacks but also roadside ambushes from the enemy because of narrow winding roads. If you had something like the Republic's AT-TE, a six-legged low profile walker but modified for current use, that would actually give a huge tactical advantage to the commander since you're no longer limited to roads. In urban terrain, if we look at a battlefield like a future Stalingrad, legs would also offer a better advantage to wheeled vehicles since you could easily walk over debris covered embankments which would be too dangerous or too loose for even treads. I agree with the overall assessment regarding air transport, but even then, you have the potential for Blackhawk down type incidents if operating in urban, jungle or mountainous terrain. I could see the military wanting something like the AT-TE albeit upgraded, if equipped like the Stryker's Mobile Gun System, which would mean a turreted mounted 105mm smoothbore gun, which would turn it into a mobile artillery troop carrier platform, or you could put a 155mm howitzer, a M269 Launcher Loader Module or any current weapon system used by the military. IF this is reflective of the Empire, then using these walkers in terrain like jungles, mountainous terrain or urban areas would be a HUGE advantage over wheeled vehicles like the Juggernaut. While the Empire DOES use transports like the Sentinel class shuttle, it only has weapons on the front, and while it is hovering, just like with UH-1 Huey's and UH-60 Blackhawks, they're vulnerable to attack.

    There is one advantage, don't know if it's been brought up - defense against mines. There's only so much you can do to protect tracks and wheels, but legs can be more heavily armored. On top of that, with walkers like the AT-AT, you can essentially turn the bottom of the foot into a slab of armor, protecting it against mines to a greater degree than you could with other vehicles. Even if a mine does get through, then it's only one limb that's gone - the vehicle may be immobilized, but that's better than a breach in the main hull.
    I want to say that they'd be better in certain types of terrain, but it'd probably just be places like swamps or rough mountains. Walkers built for those environments would likely be rare, highly specialized, and deployed only on special missions. As it stands, the Empire's walkers don't really live up to the "All-Terrain" name.

  • @magikal_madz5351
    @magikal_madz5351 6 лет назад +1

    Its my understanding that, in the case of the battle of Hoth, walkers were used because they could bypass the shield through ground contact (you mentioned repulsor jamming, but I thought large dome shields, at their limits, negated repulsor tech) and they were slow moving enough. I can't remember if the shield used was a particle shield or not, but the alliance had to open and close the shield to let their transports through.

    And that is why no other universe uses These types of Walkers. In all other sci-fi universes, Walkers are bipedal combat/assault weapons, and most of the time have one or more of the followig characteristics: very mobile, very well armed and very well armoured. Examples are: Mobile Suits (Gundam); Arm Slaves (Fulmetal Panic); Knightmare Frames (Code Geass); Wraithlords, Wraithknights, Eldar Titans, Imperial Knights, Imperial Titans, Tau Battlesuits (Warhammer 40k).

    • @EbonyManta

      Ironically, quadrupedal walkers are more realistic (as in, more likely that we would use them) than bipedal ones. The main advantage having two legs has in nature, rather than four, is that your _other_ limbs are free to hold tools or otherwise manipulate objects. That's not as much of a concern with vehicles...

    I'd just like to argue in favor of the _concept_ of walkers for a second.
    Treads are relatively easy to deadline, taking just one out part of them immobilizes the vehicle. Wheels tend to struggle on difficult terrains particularly if their tires are not optimized for that terrain, and when you have to control countless planets all over an entire galaxy you don't want to have to refit your vehicles for the specific planet they're on. I don't know much about repulsor-lift technology, but I would imagine it is quite power intensive.

    • @thearisen7301
      @thearisen7301 6 лет назад +3

      Justin Thompson The issue with walkers is they're even more vulnerable than tracks. Destroy one leg on an ATAT and it's done. Not only that but the fall will damage the walker considerably. Tracks can be repaired relatively easily. Then there is the issue of weight dispersion. Basically tracks are excellent at dispersing the weight of a vehicle but the feet of a walker are not. This means a tracked vehicle can cross terrain that would not support an equally heavy walker.

    • @justinthompson6364
      @justinthompson6364 6 лет назад

      While having one leg down would deadline an AT-AT, I don't think this is necessarily a weakness of all possible walker designs. Depending on which part of the leg was disabled, it might still even be able to provide some functionality.
      The rest are good points though.

    • @oracleofspace3931
      @oracleofspace3931 6 лет назад +3

      This. The way to make practical walkers is to add MORE legs that are shorter to vehicles. It's not too much of a stretch to presume something like an AT-TE could survive losing a single leg, and something with 8 or more should be significantly harder to immobilize than any tracked vehicle.
      Ideally, you would primarily use walkers for heavily armored assault vehicles. Design the legs so that it can at least move - albeit likely at a slower speed - with only say 4 of the 8 legs it has and keep the center of gravity low enough to prevent AT-AT issues. Congratulations, you now have an assault vehicle that can walk through shields, has better off-road capabilities than wheels, and can actually take a hit to the vunrable sections without being immeadetely knocked out like treads would be.

    Eck, in response to your comment that you didn't believe that repulsorlift jamming technology was common there is one thing that you did not mention. In star wars repulsor technology cannot penetrate ground based shielding (ie. Hoth shields or gungans). I cannot remember why, either it is something with collision detecting or the energy output by the vehicles, but they are rendered inoperable the moment they come into contact with the shield. This is why the imperials did not use star fighters before the shield was down in episode V, and that is why the AAT's did not move through the gungan shield in episode I.

    • @EbonyManta

    • @Monarch2235

      By the time the Rebel speeders engaged the walkers they were well within the radius of the shield. The effect is not blanket, it is only during contact with the shield wall.
      Here is a website i found that provides the total coverage of 50 square kilometers. starwars-exodus.wikia.com/wiki/DSS-02_Shield_Generator . After doing a little bit of math, I found that the diameter of the shield generator was about 7.98 kilometers with a radius of 3.99 kilometers. The speeders were well within this radius because they were engaging walkers that were firing on the main Rebel defenses. Also in case you're wondering about the transports and x-wings, it is specifically stated by Leia during briefing that the shield can only be opened for a short period of time, and that they needed to stay close together.

    I always figured that walkers were designed with the idea of working with support assets such as ground troops, escorts and air support. In Legends, and the Thrawn trilogy books in particular frequent mention is made to the chariot assault vehicle. Which in an assault on Karde`s base on Mykrr (hope I got the planet right) flew around the flanks of a formation of At-At and At-St walkers which constituted the main force.
    With this model the vehicles could function as mobile assault vehicles capable of taking out any major resistance to heavy for other forces to face. Such as shield generators or weapon hardpoints and fortifications. Meanwhile the chariots and speeders act as protection from ground troops and scouts searching out targets for the walkers.
    Air support against speeders such as the T-47 would ideally be provided by TIE fighters such as the Stryker are the normal LN series vehicles. I would also guess that the prevalence of walkers in the Imperial army and earlier by the Republic Grand Army was due to a need to pierce shields. We can see in Phantom menace that the droid tanks cannot go through the Gungan shield. But a walker could. Thus making them useful.
    Mention is also made in Empire that the rebels are having trouble adjusting their speeders for the cold. Which may account for the empires lack of escorts for their At-At and At-St walkers at Hoth. Perhaps the speeders and Chariots were not available. And other things prevented the Empire from deploying air support. Giving the Alliance an edge.
    In short while I believe a lot of flaws exist with Walkers I would guess that they do play a very useful role in the Empire. Plot armor on the part of the main characters, sloppy writing on the part of Tv and movie writers and in universe ineptitude of Imperial commanders simply negate many of the advantages a walker brings to the table.

    I think the idea of the Walkers in ESB was that they could push through the sub-planetary defence shield around the Rebel Hoth base. Tracked or wheeled vehicles could presumably do the same, but not repulsorlifts or TIE fighters. So they were the product of a particular need and design philosophy - they could quickly move troops through the shield to overrun a lightly defended base before it could be evacuated. They weren't intended as a main battle tank against a near-peer adversary. In that context I think they made enough sense although a large wheeled or tracked attack transport might have been better.

Many modern recon vehicles are both lightly armed and armored because their job is not to get in a slug match with a heavily armed or armored opponent, their job is to scout ahead and report back what they've seen. If they run into something fairly small or light, like them, they have the firepower to kill it, if it's much bigger and/or heavily armed than them then they should have the speed to outrun it.

    +EckhartsLadder I do not totally disagree with the points you've made. But let's analize the battle of Hoth for example. The AT-AT was the perfect tool to crack the rebels defense. The ATs were to heavely armored for the light and medium defense weapons of the rebel line. The troops inside the ATs were very well protected and could be deployed very close to the rebel lines without having suffered any sever casualties on the way there. The AT-ATs also had the firepower to destroy the shield generator quickly without putting the lives of a demolition team on the line. They lose a couple ATs to the snow speeders, sure. But we have to remember that this is a movie, and we want the good guys to have their moments. But from a realistic point of view, it is pure luck and some weird equipment like an unbreakable cable. Also the tactics of the bad guys are questionable. A good military tactic is to involve all possible assets and to combine them into one force. The lack of defensive power against fast and agile vehicles of the AT-AT would have been largely compensated if they had deployed a couple of TIE-figthers inside the shield. I mean, if you can get inside the shield dome by the land way, why not even bring TIE-bombers inside?!? But even with just a couple of TIE-fighters that would have engaged the snow speeders, i think the battle of hoth would have ended much sooner than in the movie and probably resulting in the anihilation of the rebel command.
    To rap it up, i can agree that the AT-AT, on its own, would have some flaws and weak points. But against a landforce equiped with light and medium weapons and no air support, it would still be a formidable weapon to use. And if combined with other groups to provide air cover and close cover support, it still remains the ultimative line breaker.

It's fast, can turn around in an instant if necessary, can traverse over, land, water and ice (I don't think Repulsor are super hot because then it would be just hot air), it has 6 Missile Launcher with different loadout, 2 anti Infantry Cannons on the side and 1 big anti Tank Cannon on top which can rotate to 360° degree.
    Most Spider Tanks are sadly not as impressive, although the smaller ones can move on walls, and the best allrounder Spider Tank would be the Advanced Spider Droid from Republic Commando (Game).
    The Republic has the AT-TE. It's is, compared to the AT-AT small, can be used for a multitude of abilities for a number for engagements. Con provide fresh troops, rations, Ammunition and Medical equipment. It can also be used as a temporarily mobile HQ. And it can fire at any direction. Although most of it's firepower is directed forwards.

    Hey I just found out about your channel and I have been binge watching your video and I was wondering if you have done any Destiny videos, mostly because I'm wondering how many different races would face off against each other and I think that destiny's heavy hitters could take on the empire.

    From my view, the AT-ST does have a use in difficult terrains. The dense forests like Endor make sense to have a 'nimble' walker able to maneuver between the massive sequoia trees. It's a way of putting armor and firepower in a place where a large tank or AT-AT would be penned in. But for large expanses like Hoth, Jakku, Tattooine, etc... I really think tanks with air support would be exponentially better.

    Actually, the part about the logs smashing the walker is pretty realistic, the mythbusters once tested 2 logs against an armored swat vehicle.

      Had to look that up as I was surprised. To be fair they did, but if you look it actually took out a single panel which looks weak around the edges, maybe riveted? Whereas compare that to the film, the entire structure is crushed and destroyed. So not entirely accurate, but at least it's kind of feasible. Compared to the usual lack of realism in most films it's pretty mild.

      @@alkaholic4848 we don't know how dense and heavy the logs were on that planet, if they were dense enough, MAYBE they could do that

      Given that the trees on Endor literally dwarf any earth trees save the giant redwood, they could well have been very dense indeed.

    Walkers are a pet peeve of mine. Glad to see you think the same way.

    The walkers may not make sense, but they are just so awesome.
