Sidekicks do work. But, you have to practise them a lot and have power with them, you also need to know when to land them and be aware of the defence against them. They are best as a surprise attack. For instance, when Wonderboy comes out of the pocket to the left, you can land a spinning right side kick to catch him and force him back onto the ropes. Here there was no ring, which would make it easier for him to avoid it, but if you time it right it would still either land or give you distance and give you time to reset. Additionally, you should try to set your own cadence and try off-beat attacks. The Tao of Jeet Kune Do explains this in some detail.

Big ole 'like' for the Karate Nerd making a cameo. Hilarious!!! This was a super cool video! It's crazy to see how good pros like WB really are. Sitting there watching UFC on your couch you can't really tell but when you see them against "regular Joes", it's impressive. You could tell WB was going maybe 25% and was still just scoring at will.... no offense Seth lol

I remember my first time sparring against a clearly superior striker, you learn the difference in skill super quick. Worst part is unlike in BJJ where you'll just get tapped inevitably....you know your going to be getting punched in the face for up two minutes. It's a feeling that still occurs when I know I"m out matched and you start losing mentally, second guessing everything. That must have started the minute he hit you with that clean hook kick.
As you said though there are levels to everything. BJJ black belts with years of experience will get babied by the likes of Demain Maia. Great job and great video.

What you said about being mentally exhausted reminds me of this one time I sparred with my instructor. Neither of us really did anything, for the 2-3 minutes, the sparring lasted, but both were exhausted at the end. Me and him costantly tried to open the other up for a strike. Feinting, moving, trying to set something up, but couldn't really. I can relate to that. Great video, Wonderboy is a beast.

When in doubt jab if not in doubt jab anyways in fact most the drills I learned consisted around the jab wether self defense techniques or sparring because we all know its the fastest most effective our attacker may use on us maybe not the most powerful or greatest reach but definitely dangerous and if not defense correctly leaves us vulnerable for more oncoming if attacker sees we can't even defense against that they get more encouraged its a test and many will test us with feints just using footwork even without jab if we don't move respond correctly we encourage them more. to swing at us and it misses or has little to no effect or is consistently guarded against discourages and we wan't our attacker feeling that way as we continue to batter their spirit possibly their body 😉 as far as side kicks being ineffective nothing is effective if its seen or anticipated coming especially at light or medium contact if skilled at this they should be scared to go full because they can't even beat or out fight you going gently I say that every sparring session with my sifu thank God he's taking it easy on me

Awesome video. You did better than you think. That IS Wonderboy, after all; I'd argue he's top three in his division. Love his father being honest and constructive. They're a great family and Wonderboy's positive outlook is very similar to your own.
My two cents: Watch how he uses pressure. This is where the difference was most apparent. When inside, rely more on "feeling" or sensing than sight and maintain your base; contact can become control... send your intention and force beside his "line" and back to his center... it subtly unbalances your opponent and gives you time to respond. Granted, it's hard to do with big gloves, but Wonderboy does this at times using karate methods. You tend to recoil [and tense] and pull back at contact, but contact or his posting can guide you into his base if accepted. The key is elbow [immovable downward] position. "Turn the spear" [don't attack at the apex of force but alongside it]. When you do circle, go outside his lead leg and shift immediately into your attack. It will gain you time. I often saw you go "into" his best position by going inside his lead leg. He's too good at framing so he'll be there the second you shift in that direction. Trying to gain distance when you can use his energy to divert and shift outside slows you down and is exhausting. To me it's just a matter of you gaining comfort inside, learning the levers and tricks around the guard. Don't think it will be too long before you feel more relaxed in there which will amplify your speed and stamina. You're very talented.
Position permits opportunity; balance allows response. Maintain your own and take both away on contact. Be relaxed and "conform" upon contact to use his force as much as your own.
Great content on my favorite karate channel. God bless.

Yes Wonderboy Thompson is, making it look effortless.
He is staying cool. Not throwing hard shots. Breathing, perhaps. Doing well if he is aged 47. Karate Enthusiasts, seem to go on a long time. Like The Kempo dude. Who, is the friend of Master Wong. He looks ancient. He is still going with his Kempo.
