The West has problems with anyone whether due to Race, Skin color, Religion unless they genuflect, and give up their sovereignty, their natural resources, and decision making etc etc. All that is due to the West being a colonial power from the days of the Spanish, Portuguese Dutch, even tiny Belgium, the British, and finally the American Empire. The armed force is there to protect the people's lives primarily, sovereignty, next. Since China is 5x more populous than US, it should spend 5x more than US for military. But no, China's expenditure is less than half of the US.
It's not how much you spend that matters. What matters is what you get with what you spent. US has the most expensive military but it buys its equipment from the world's most corrupt corporations.
And a complete industrial supply chain for it's defense industry. The world's biggest manufacturer of machinery and equipment needed for the defense industry to thrive

Martin is probably the first (and ONLY) Western academic/scholar/historian who I've seen get just about everything right about China, and yet somehow other pundits either ignore him or think their own POVs are more accurate (they aren't). Martin doesn't mention all of the following in this video, but if you watch his other videos he covers all these major points: 1) China is a civilization state and the state is respected ONLY insofar as it is able to maintain, preserve, and protect the unity of the civilization and culture. So long as it is able to do that, the Chinese people will forgive the rest (unsurprisingly, the authoritarian CCP is very similar to previous dynasties, just modernized). 2) The Chinese see themselves as SUPERIOR to the rest of East Asia and to some degree the rest of the world, and that is why they have so much pride in their heritage and identity (and why no matter where the Chinese diaspora is, they always form Chinatowns and refer to the NATIVES as "foreigners"). Whether this is accurate is another story, but it is important to understand this about Chinese culture. To this day, many East Asian countries still refer to China as the "Middle Kingdom" in their OWN languages. 3) The Chinese have no real interest in overseas conquest, so the idea that the Chinese will start a whole war with the U.S. is literally absurd. You'd have to know exactly nothing about Chinese culture and its thousands of years of well-documented history to think this is a serious concern. The Chinese already HAD the chance to colonize when they were the premier superpower in the world, centuries ago when they explored the Old World before Columbus sailed to America. The Chinese didn't colonize because they didn't think other countries had anything to offer them (they were dead wrong on this count, of course). So even if China becomes the #1 economy in the world--which at this point it will, there's literally no stopping it--the rest of the world will basically be just fine. No need to panic nonstop about it. And no, I'm not a mouthpiece for the CCP--both my grandfathers were generals for Chiang Kai Shek, my parents grew up in Taiwan, and I was born in NYC. I have no love for the CCP. But to think China will start WWIII is literally insane. There is no incentive for the Chinese to do that because it will only disrupt us from making money, which--if you've watched Ronnie Chieng's standup you would know--is our favorite pastime in history.

Thank you MJ for an enlightening discourse on Understanding China on the global political stage, and history of its civilisation set against that of the Western Power. What one should realize is the huge difference in the DNA of Caucasians (comprising mainly of European stocks) vs the people of the rest of the world. Historically, Europeans (of Anglo-Saxon , Vikings, Romans and Greeks origins) were aggressive in nature, conquering one another, and since the 11th century were exploring, invading, subjugating, colonising, exploiting and enslaving all other passive humans beings around the world. In short, they were just big bullies. Although the Chinese might have had fought amongst themselves for centuries one dynasty after another until the CCP came into power in 1949, they just don't have the DNA to conquer any other countries. As you stated, the Chinese prefer "to stay at home"; they have no interest in other countries' affairs in the past nor in the present. Sadly, that's not the case of the US and its allies (EU and the 5 eyes) who have been forever aggressive, exploiting and warmongering against weaker nations. The US needs to feed their military industrial complex whereas the Chinese need to feed its 1.4 billion people; and instead of military invasion and establishing military bases, the Chinese export their infrastructure skills by sending their engineers, architects and construction workers to other third world countries. They are happy to return to their "Middle Kingdom" when their jobs are done!! Chinese people prefer monies and peace, not war and misery; they have had enough of hunger and humiliation for a century!

Chinese culture has always been about the Golden Rule, the foundation of logical thinking - “Do not do unto others what you do not want to be done unto you.” Whether it be Confucianism, Taoism, or Buddhism, it is all about believing in Humanity - kindness, empathy, and compassion - 以仁待人,一視同仁。 For about 2,500 years, with the influence of Confucianism, China sees the world as one family that members should be supporting one another, living in harming for better and for worse, and always having faith for a better tomorrow in all generations to come - 天下一家,同舟共濟;欲天下太平,必先修身齊家治國。 Therefore it is important for China to help the developing parts of the world to first be able to feed their children, have strong family and society support, and to be able to provide fundamental education to the younger generation. China has always believed in family, society, and education - 有教無類 - 大學之道,在明明德,在親民,在止於至善 - because China believes in peace, not war.

We can clearly see this in the Australian government. Lead by evangelical bullying from US, the issues on the Darwin Port, Solomon Islands, property market & economic citizens is sorely contradictive in terms of RCEP & ASEAN. This myopic vision will drag trade & harmonious exchange in tourism!
Frankly its very hard to understand the chinese way of doing thing without first learning their language. Once I have learned it I was blown away. Its a whole new world of perception and I finally know the win-win policy isn’t a hoax. The chinese are realist people. They don’t expect hand outs or free money from anyone and they also don’t expect others to do so too. So when they do business, they expect the other party to gain as well. They do think long term. Fast gain isn’t in their play book.
Like EU and the rest of the 4 eyes in the West. Australia is just a puppet...a simple puppet and pawn on this geopolitical chessboard. It does not matter who is in government, they all bow down to their master
Based on Martin's trade map, the cold war between US and China affects mainly the trade between US and China. China will, for sure, try its best to retain normal trading relationship with other existing trading partners. Countries with strong trading relationship with China are looking for economic expansion. Their growth will certainly outpaced the west. US strategy is decoupling with China and it will soon find it decouples with other nations as well. As a result, US economic influence over the world will continue to shrink. The question is then why US is doing that? The reason is obvious. US internal political system puts too much weights on short term political gains of individuals or of parties instead of long term benefits for the country.
China is a completely self-interested country and culture. It does not want to colonize or save other countries like the evangelizing west. It want to be the biggest and the best by competing and winning. Its relationship is transactional, oil for machines and cars, minerals for infrastructure, tech for money, tourism for money, property for money. China's system is its competitive advantage, it has no interest to give up that advantage. It want developing countries to develop into a market for China if it has something to trade. China is your competitor but not your enemy.
Some points to back up Martin's claim of why China is not interested in conquering and tend to stay unify is that: 1) Back when China was not unified under Qin rule, the Warring States waged war on each other for 400+ years. This is a very important period that many Western historians tend to overlook, which formed the Chinese way of thinking for the next millennia. 2) If you study Warring States period history carefully and actually read their commentaries of the Warring States period, they viewed that period negatively. It's not about the opinion of one historian, but rather a collection of historical commentaries over 1000+ years. My Chinese friend often drawing parallels of Warring States history to the European states during WWII and until this day. 3) Confucian historians have repeatedly emphasized the possible destruction and chaos in China if their country fell back into different independent states (like Warring States period), which is a very real sentiment further emphasized when China broke into different states during the fall of previous dynasties. 4) Unlike Europe, the Chinese solved the peace problem using the means of unification and stability across the region. They cannot tolerate the fact their country is dissolved into smaller states each competing for supremacy. It wasn't until WWII that the Europeans learned their lesson of war, but Chinese knew that way long before the Europeans did. Chinese have their records of history well documented until now, and their commentaries to Warring States period remained true to this day. Their solution to peace? Keep China unified. 5) Chinese do not interested in conquering other people because they already have a huge population to govern.
Thank you for these interesting points. Does your point 3, the danger of going back to many states, contributes to the Chinese stance on Taiwan? I mean, accepting the status quo no matter how independent the island is in practice as long as it is not declared so. The fear being a 'domino effect' risk in other provinces. I am not saying it is a justified fear or not, but oftentimes on some topics, countries take that besieged view.
@@newnastyn I would say yes and no. Taiwan's situation is much more complicated than this. First of all, Taiwan uses the ROC constitution. No matter how independent the island is in practice, it still consider itself a part of China (legally speaking), but not under CCP rule. The CCP defined Taiwan as a 'rogue state', and the ROC supporters defined the CCP as the 'rebels'. Well, as long as the Taiwanese doesn't pose a military threat to the CCP, then they would happy to leave them as it is, right? But that's against the core value, and the very existence of being "Chinese". The core reason why China is able to survive for so long is through unification. Three Kingdoms period - ended with unification under Jin dynasty. Northern and Southern dynasties period - ended with unification under Sui dynasty. Ten Kingdoms period - ended with unification under Song dynasty. Its impossible for any political party, who governs China, could openly renounces the idea of unification. So, back to the issue of Taiwan. There are actually quite a number of mainland Chinese who supports ROC come back to rule the mainland. But Taiwan didn't do that and prefer to stay by themselves. I once chat with a CCP supporter who said something like this: " I used to hate PRC/CCP so much and actually welcome the idea that ROC come back to rule the mainland. But as I grew older and went to Taiwan, I knew the Taiwanese does not think the same as us. That's fine. But they are still technically ROC right? Why aren't they taking efforts to end this animosity between PRC or ROC? Why are they supporting the East Turkistan, Dalai Lama and Manchurian separatist? Shouldn't their goal be unifying the rest of China if that's what written in the ROC constitution? If they have no intention to unify China, why should I support this corrupt regime? Why are they still making political debates about reunification and independence, if they are already independent at the first place? They uses the ROC flag, but doesn't act like the ROC. The ROC I knew of is a country of dignity, founded with high ideals for the sake of China. I am not supporting CCP whole-heartedly, but if supporting CCP makes the country whole again, I will support the party unconditionally. " And there are also mainlanders who think like this: " I think ROC would be better off themselves but we cannot tolerate the idea of two Chinas, we must end this situation one day. Let alone Taiwan independent, changes their constitution and renounces their ROC flag. I hate to see the ROC flag used by people who go against the ideals of Dr Sun Yat-sen, which is to establish a strong, unified China. But as the Taiwan continue uses the ROC flag, we will continue pursue for unification. We will not abandon them like what the KMT did to us." In short, their stance on Taiwan is the result of the civil war and emotional psyche of a strong, unified state. Yes, they do afraid of a possible 'domino effect' caused by province independence. If the states were to became independent, their population density/size will definitely result in a full scale war never been saw in human history. But there are other dimensions in regards to the Taiwan problem, which concerns with the state legitimacy of ROC/PRC. The Chinese still views their history in a "dynastic cycle", which is an alien concept unheard of in the West. Every new dynasty must establish their rule by purging the "old, corrupted regime". What PRC is doing fits the action, purging the ROC through the means of unification. But it is naive for Westerner to think that CCP's going take Taiwan even by the means of committing massive atrocities and killing off all the Taiwanese in an armed conflict. That's not the case. How should CCP rule Taiwan effectively if they wanted to kill all the people at Taiwan lol It will definitely resulted in a massive rebellion and the further destabilization of the region. That's not worth the take.
@@䨝雨 thank you for taking the time. I don't think PRC would attack Taiwan. Unless it was pushed into doing that. But i think if let alone (mainly referring to US looking for another fight) PRC would just wait for Taiwan to fall back into it, by economic gravity. Right now i am not very optimistic. The Americans and us Europeans sound completely crazy in all international affairs. To hear calls for a world NATO to block china... These people are both crazy and hysterical. With more than a hint of nostalgia of their past significance, which apparently they try to reinforce with a gunboat diplomacy straight out off 📴 the XIXth century. I am however quite skeptical. many people seem to think the west is spoiling for a fight with china in the near future, like it did with Russia. Seems quite crazy to me. But then again, so seemed going into a proxy war with Russia and sanctioning every commodity they sell and we cannot do without (yes, stupid, and yet they did. Only way to top that is to do the same with china...).
@@newnastyn I guess the CCP got a better understanding with this. They are very patient with the problem of Taiwan and all of them knew attacking Taiwan will not be the solution. Now the economics are in favour of China despite the US sanctions and their media war against China. Here is a video clip of the CCP general giving lectures on US budget on funding against the "Chinese disinformation" campaign ruclips.net/video/VKlNMxjBGzQ/видео.html At 1:20:13, the list goes as follow: -15 million USD to help the US company retreat out of China (annual) -75 million USD to counter the Belt and Road initiative (annual) -300 million USD to counter against the "Chinese influence" (annual) -100 million USD to counter against the "Chinese media" (annual) -10 million USD for Hong Kong democratic movement and alleviate sanctions against Xinjiang (annual) His remark: Let's hope the US will broke themselves pouring so many money into sustaining their own propaganda. They might not confront us militarily, but through propaganda war. We will not fight with them , we will ask them to keep pouring the money into Middle East and continue play a role in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. If they like to intervene so much in other countries, let them be and broke themselves up in the process.
@@newnastyn Every nation wants to keep itself intact. It has all the right to defend itself from secession or from breaking apart. Taiwan and the mainland is still effectively at a civil war as their civil war never ended, they just mutually agreed that it be a cold war instead of a hot war. Thus China still aims to unite with Taiwan no matter how long it takes, preferably peacefully. The americans should know this as they have experienced this same situation early in their history. When the southern states seceeded from the Union, the Union went to war to get them back, it was a 5 year bloody war that cost 650,000 casualties (the most accepted number). But historian Dr. J. David Hacker published “A Census-Based Count of Civil War Dead,” in the scholarly quarterly, Civil War History, reporting that his in-depth study of recently digitized census data concluded that a more accurate estimate of Civil War deaths is about 750,000, with a range from 650.000 to as many as 850,000 dead.

China had been conquered several times in its long history becoz its core culture of Confuscism has been dedicated to poetry, painting, harmony, kindness and etiquette, which resulted in neglect of weapon manufacture, weak defense and weak physical strength. But each time after China was conquered by its nearby "barbarians", its boundary moved outward and territory expanded, forcefully merged with the conquering neighbor. But to rule over Chinese huge population, the conquerors often had to rely on locala to govern, so gradually Chinese were able to covert the "barbarians" into part of them, or if not when the barbarians became weak, they all did, core Chinese were united to overthrow the barbarians. @52:31, USA believe having many military bases around the world adds power and prestige to USA. China believe having many factories around the world adds power and prestige to China.
If US want to keep its dominance, it must do something that encourages more countries to rely on them. Meaning US must show the world that it is reliable. Instead, US strategies have been going in the opposite direction. US must understand that it could never be achieved by force.
I would say that the US itself has become unpredictable. Can we really expect a future Republican administration to support climate change goals? Also the US is actively supporting insurgencies around the world.
@18:52, Martin was doing so well until he said British and French colonization of the new world brought civilization to the indigenous people. Truth be told, the Western European “civilized” the “savages” with muskets and swords, stole their land and resources , and destroyed their cultures.
The words China or Chinese are more related to the ethnic group. While the Chinese as an ethnic group has 3000+ years of history and culture, the country 中华人民共和国 PRC is just a 70+ years ago state, A lot of people, including the ruling party CCP has great interest to mix up the concepts. That has to be the first thing in mind to understand China.
How I see this is, PRC is just the current ruling dynasty of China, just like all of the historic dynasties. China, as a country, has 3000+ years of history, but these histories are not just from one dynasty, it is a collective history from all of the different time periods, created by the dynasty of the time. PRC is no different from them, it just is a modern "dynasty", taking the name People's Republic of China to fit with modern reasons.
@@dr.riddles9241 sorry, same token will USA be a dynasty and America a country? Should Europe or european be a country and Germany, Spain will all be dynasties.... ? The answer might be yes, when "CCP" like party ruled any part of Europe.
@@9al9al I see where you are coming from. Let‘s separate the US and Europe first, I'll give my opinions of them separately. Starting the US first, sure, you can say the USA maybe like a dynasty and America a country, but fundamentally it is different China. The 3000+ years of history in China is a collective history made by the natives of the land, there is no disconnect. Each dynasty builds ontop of the previous so there is this continuous flow to China's history. US on the other hand, well, not wanting to sound explicit, but the recent few hundred years of history was and is still being made by European colonisers, not by the land's native people, so there is this great disconnect. That's why I wouldn't consider US a dynasty, as past history and recent history are completely different. Europe on the other hand, is basically China if the country was never united. Sure, you can probably argue to view Europe as a "country" and Germany, Spain etc. as "dynasties" but all are very different from each other. It is probably better to say the Europe Union is a "country" and all the countries joined are "ethnic groups", but this brings up 2 issues, first being the EU is only recent history, while China has had its ethnic groups for thousands of years starting from the Qin Dynasty, it's like one big family for them. The only thing that has changed after the Qin is just which dynasty is in power, each dynasty following still ruled over the same land. The second issue is that there was never, and probably will never be a true unification for Europe. Excluding the fact that there are still countries not part of the EU though are European countries, there was never, 1. a common language, and 2. a common currency. Both criterias for unification was achieved by China on the otherhand. English is just the language most spoken in the EU, it is not the common language unlike Chinese/Mandarin, and there are still countries that doesn't use Euro as its currency, whether part of the EU or not. So yeah, this is basically my views on this matter. Would love to continue the conversation.
Since 1972 the world leaders by a majority kicked Republic of China, now also known as Taiwan that has less than 24 million population, out of the UN and gave the membership and the seat in the security council to People's Republic of China now has 1,438 million population. The "mistake" West did to China is making China become a country/nation because that shape a nationalism within the previous already unified civilisation. The differences that created clashes in the past become ignored and it engraved within all Chinese, whoever belong to that land will hold strong pride of being Chinese civilisation and culture.. Even me as a diaspora, I used to feel "embarass" because of smear campaigns and wanting to be as far as possible of being "Chinese" but as I'm getting older, I can sense my pride of being Chinese stronger and forever that land will be my ancestral land..I will forever proud of my civilisation and culture history.. So if me as someone who is not born in China but even can still sense my pride to motherland, now imagine how Chinese who born and suffer to build current China sees their own country. Definitely they will be proud for their nation. Westerners can't see and imagine someone can be proud for their country..because they look everything in perspective of westerners.

Rather, it suggested other countries develop their own self-suitable systems because different states or regions hold divergent and distinct culture, history, and value, and so on.

Martin is probably the first (and ONLY) Western academic/scholar/historian who I've seen get just about everything right about China, and yet somehow other pundits either ignore him or think their own POVs are more accurate (they aren't). Martin doesn't mention all of the following in this video, but if you watch his other videos he covers all these major points:
1) China is a civilization state and the state is respected ONLY insofar as it is able to maintain, preserve, and protect the unity of the civilization and culture.
Let's hope you're right, sir🎩🏴☠️

So China under ccp and xi is an utopian dream land!!!!

They are our enemy.
excellent talk
Those slides are amazing 👍
Some points to back up Martin's claim of why China is not interested in conquering and tend to stay unify is that:
1) Back when China was not unified under Qin rule, the Warring States waged war on each other for 400+ years.
I once chat with a CCP supporter who said something like this:
" I used to hate PRC/CCP so much and actually welcome the idea that ROC come back to rule the mainland.
And there are also mainlanders who think like this:
" I think ROC would be better off themselves but we cannot tolerate the idea of two Chinas, we must end this situation one day. We will not abandon them like what the KMT did to us."
In short, their stance on Taiwan is the result of the civil war and emotional psyche of a strong, unified state.
How should CCP rule Taiwan effectively if they wanted to kill all the people at Taiwan lol
It will definitely resulted in a massive rebellion and the further destabilization of the region.
US is pouring a lot of money into funding the anti-China narrative and hoping the CCP to go to war.

-100 million USD to counter against the "Chinese media" (annual)
-10 million USD for Hong Kong democratic movement and alleviate sanctions against Xinjiang (annual)
His remark: Let's hope the US will broke themselves pouring so many money into sustaining their own propaganda.

You said Japan is fascinating as well. Indeed, it is, and ancient Japan is like a Taiwan today. Just like Taiwan, it has the so-called aborigines, the Burakumins, Ainus, etc. Japan generally had good enough relations with China throughout its history but it now seems to have a love hate relationship with China. Everything in Japan came from China, especially from the Qin, Han and Tang dynasties but particularly from the Tang dynasty. In many respects, they are more Chinese than the Chinese because they stick religiously to the ancient Chinese traditions but they "desinicized" (but not quite) themselves and became Japan thousands of years ago probably since the time of Xu Fu or Jofuku who was probably the founding father and first emperor of Japan! In 219 BC, Xu Fu was sent with thousands of virgin boys and girls to retrieve the elixir of life from the immortals on the Mount Penglai but he subsequently went to the Eastern islands and never returned...
The current territory of China is the result of tough Qin tribe in the north swallowed the inner Ming China. New emperor was able to restore Xinjiang and Taiwan back into its territory.

Hello, Professor Martin Jaques. Thanks for the lecture. I have a question: why do you think China was not a nation state before late 19th century? For my understanding, China has been a untited nation state since the Qin dynasty, and then separeted from time to time, but re-united again and again.
The Han nationality in China is the product of multi-ethnic integration. They became the Han nationality through cultural identity.

More than 1500 years.
Where is his mike under his lapel, sounds muffled at times, hard to follow.
How recent is this?
The PRC has always been a puppet regime originally funded, trained and equipped by the US.
@@dr.riddles9241 t同意 agree you
Many people do not try to understand why China has made tremendous progress in the last few decades . They prefer to adopt negative attitude ( angry , criticizing , jealous ,.... )
No on cares about china's progress. They are worry about the threat it causes- it is not jealous etc.

@@biggpicture2930 USA cares and are frightened by China's progress. There are numerous USA's military bases all over the world but not China. Which country imposes the danger to world peace ?
@@JIANGTG US is scare of China's progress? Not really! Just like Japan's threat in 1985, Japan was easily contained. China would be no problem, by starving off its food and energy import. Russia saved CHIna in a big way! CHina-Russia is worrying dude, but not china by itself.
Surely it would help to "understand China in Chinese terms" if one actually understood Chinese--that is, the language well enough to speak, read and write it. But what of those who extoll China but lack facility in the Chinese language? For all the attacks on the West and its purported arrogance towards China, isn't that a further example of the same attitude?
No
Nationality, not the backbone of
Chinese civilization !
I appreciate your intellect and focus. Im curious regarding the numbers that gets India to grow its economy > 7x by 2030 (your graph shows them larger than US by 2030 - 2020: ~$2.6T vs US ~21T. Thoughts?
When in Rome do as the Romans do.
@42:37, The US factories remain intact while much of those in Europe and Asia were in ruin after WW2. Today, the US economy can no longer dominate the world because post WW2 Asian and European nations have rebuilt their economy.
Then it's time for World War 3.
The "International Community" = 747.8 mln European + 333 mln American + 38.2 mln Canadian + 25.7 Australian + 5.1 mln NZ = 1,150 bln people which is less than 1,44 Chinese (Including Taiwan Chinese, excluding Singaporean Chinese & other expats)
Outside the White House, the US President was addressing a group of reporters. Suddenly, someone shouted "China!China!". With quick reaction, the bodyguards drew their guns to protect the President from 'China'.
Inside the White House,a maid accidentally dropped a plate in the kitchen. The First Lady saw this and shouted,"You have broken my precious china!". The President overhead this and thinking that 'China' is already in the White House, collapsed and died of heart attack.
