Just thinking out loud, but maybe if your optic craps out and you don’t have a QD mount, im assuming you’d have to leave the non functional optic on and pop back ups? But if you’ve placed your pad tightly fitting under the optic then of course you wont be able to do that. Im assuming thats why people are complaining about not having the side wings. Obviously it would just be fixed by moving that front sight forward a bit but I don’t know, I guess people run out of rail space on their 5 inch AR’s lol

I just got a set of these last week and put them on a rifle with an Eotech so it's not mounted under anything. The rear sight worked fine, just like the older model. I had a difficult time getting the elevation drum on the front sight to start turning, but it worked fine once I got it going. I'd suggest anyone getting these get the drum to turn easily before mounting it on your gun. Lastly it seems like I had to move the front sight up pretty high to get my shots low enough on the target. I like them and will get them in the future.

Those do look really cool. I've had the Gen 2 MBUS for about 3 years, and they're fine. I just got into the AR world in 2019, so I didn't realize what a change these are. The Gen 3 does look a lot slimmer and now I need a set on the next build. One point of disagreement, Caleb - I setup a red dot, 3x magnifier, and the backups on a build, and the magnifier mount worked out that I could get the eye piece to stand out over the top of the MBUS rear sight, but only to the joint. So, I have just enough room to flip up the sight, but only if I deploy from the side. The magnifier is on a flip-out mount, but this allows me to deploy-then-flip-over in one set of motion with my off hand rather than to flip-out-then-come-back-to-deploy. So, I get what people complain about without the ability to deploy from the side.

I run pros, so these still look a bit bulky to me. The only thing is that they deploy easier/faster than pros, but at the same time, i hope i never really need to deploy them. :)

It's been a good ten years ago that I bought two sets of MBUS sights (the first gen?). Both sets, all four, broke below the attachment screws. You can say that I tightened them too much but I didn't. Never before or since have I had the same issue with other sight mounts. I have not tried later generation MBUS versions since I always live by the rule "Screw me once, shame on you. Screw me twice, shame on me."

Locktite would void over tightens the sights...

It’s really that 3rd screwing where you come into your own. No more of that, “ouch ouch you’re on my hair”.

Gen 2 are still better imo...the gen 3s dont sit flush, and it bugs me a bit...they now reside on my AR.308

Got a set of these that should be coming in today. The size and weight numbers look great for my build. I've got some a gen 1 set that I use, but they are a bit chonky.
Weird that he mentioned the MBUS 3 are heavier. The numbers on their site show that the MBUS 3 are lighter than the Gen 2. 1.06oz vs 1.3oz on the rear and .88oz vs 1.2oz on the front, now they do measure the MBUS 3 in grams and the traditional in ounces, but the conversion to says the 3 should be lighter...That's part of why I wanted to try them out, I hope the numbers are correct. Maybe it's just density or something that is making it seem like that to him.

How durable is the mechanism? Can they be depolyed 100s of times without wearing out? Or 1000's of times?

Hmm idk but they are back up sights. They are not going to deployed that much by regular users. But if you need reliable sights then your better off with steel

I wasn’t a fan of their metal sights. But these look very interesting!

@@johncox2865 they were dummy hard to adjust and I didn’t like the way they deployed. I returned them and just got the polymer ones. But I kinda wanna get these new ones haha

I think this may be internet rumor (Caleb mythbuster material) Mine have gotten pretty warm over the years. I guess there is a disclaimer on the Magpul site not to mount the on a front sight gas block. But I think for normal use on semi auto ARs with the sight mounted on a handguard it would be hard to get them hot enough to melt. Maybe Iraq veteran 8888 may have some knowledge of this since over the years he has got some ARs pretty hot
