These franchises make the most from merch, and Hello Kitty has such a cute, simple & timeless design that you can plaster it into anything, and people will buy it. You can say the same with Mickey Mouse. He's not like the most beloved disney character nor relevant as a character anymore, but he's more so the mascot and just like hello kitty, his design is cute, timeless and simple. That's enough to sell merch, which is where they make the most money. Hello Kitty also doesn't just work for kids stuff, the design & color can work for high fashion as well. I can't say the same for pikachu/pokemon. Hello Kitty design is a lot more versatile because it's so simple, timeless and cute.
I disagree. Hello Kitty has the flaw of being viewed as a female oriented brand, while Pokémon has a much broader appeal. That is why Pokémon is more popular than Hello Kitty.
@@nidohime6233 true, but it still made more than pokemon in merch despite being viewed as a female oriented brand. Pokemon is more popular and relevant, but I don't think there's a pokemon more recognizable than Hello kitty.
@@nidohime6233 Hello Kitty it was more of a merchandise, most people had never watched it's animation but everyone knew it's Hello Kitty as soon as they saw it. Something else worth noting here is that "Profit = Income - Cost" (i mean it's way more complicated than that but you get my point), and Sanrio basically spends nothing on Hello Kitty. They only make some (relatively) low-budget anime within their own company, and honestly that's kind of it. Their income from licensing rights and merch royalties is insane. The soccer effect is very true and valid. It needs to be known more. The kids anime that Joey always talks about being his childhood is very true in India. Shows like Doraemon, Shin Chan, Kochikame, Ninja Hatori, Perman, Anpanman and more were always airing on TV in India. They had Hindi and even some regional Indian language dubs. Doraemon & Shin Chan are 2 shows that are always on air even now. I don't watch TV anymore, only online so I don't know exactly what else airs. Of course DBZ, Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh, Beyblade, Naruto, Inazuma Eleven and other Shounen anime aired. DBZ and Pokemon still have timeslots I think.
For the most part in South America, Goku is the most recognizable thing EVER. If we step out of generalization, in anime community for the OG's i would say first was Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura then Hatsune Miku for the gen Z, again, from my understanding here in South America, I don't know in the North.
Hey us in India know kochikame. I'm 17 now but I vividly remember as a 5-7 year old child watching it dubbed in Hindi on my tv. It's hindi opening song is kind of iconic here.
I thought tiger mask was popular everywhere because King from Tekken was inspired by it and the whole generation X here in Italy went absolutely nuts for it, but apparently it got only translated in Italian. Also I thought devilman or yugioh would make it to top 20 instead of beyblade tbh
short answer: Shounen-anime long answer: - Pokemon (Ash, Misty Brock, Pikachu, Jessie, James and Meowth) - Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters (mostly Yugi himself and Seto Kaiba) - Beyblade (In this case, Kai and Rei/Ray are the most noticible ones.) The list could probably be longer and even include other anime, maybe even Sailor Moon, but that basically sums it up. In any case, I‘ve barely even heard of „Hello Kitty“. As far as I can tell, it‘s just an Avril Lavigne-song.
“Imagine coming close to death and then powering up by just simply getting the sht kick out of you… such an op ability” Anyone who has read four knights of the apocalypse 👀😶🙃 Yes… yes it is
Everyone in my family and neighborhood knows Goku. If you grew up watching Hong Kong action films, chances are you also watched Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z.
Here in South America, it would be Goku, Naruto, Pikachu and Saint Seiya. Those exploded here to the point that at least in Peru the big cinema companies only bring Pokemon or DBZ movies.
Most recognizable character in all anime according to my mom is Sasuke. Whenever I draw weeb shit, my mom always asked "Honey, why are you drawing Sasuke again? " Whenever my mon talked about my hobby she always said "Ah yeah, my daughter likes to draw Sasuke". I don't know how my mom know Sasuke first before Naruto, yknow the main character + it's in the title too.
I'd say that the most iconic anime franchise is Dragon Ball, bc every mom from the early 2000's say "is that Goku" when they walk on you watching any other anime in existence
Quick note on DB, DBZ, DBS Saiyans do get more power but its note during the fight its only after the healing does their power increases. The HULK is the only character who gets stronger as he gets beat, Saiyans are more like less extreme Brog or DOOMSDAY.
when i think about the most recognizable anime in my area, so western Europe. its probably captain tsubasa/dragon ball for the 35-50 years old but for the 20-35, its probably Naruto. when i grew up it was way bigger than one piece or bleach, and i would argue than even yu gi oh was more popular than those two. sure people were aware of One piece for a long time but when i'm thinking about anime discussion in primary, middle school and high school. it was mainly Naruto, FMAB, HxH, eyeshield and bleach too buts its really aroud 2010s that i really started hearing people really talking deep about one piece.
I think the most recognizable would probably be Goku or Doraemon. People may not know Doraemon's name or anything about him, but i feel like everyone has seen him before:)
I don’t think Doraemon is that popular in the west. As far as I know we’ve never had the show air and I’ve never seen any merch for it. The only reason I know about Doraemon is because I got into anime myself and heard through the anime community about it’s popularity in Japan

I think there’s three characters that can be argued as the most recognizable anime character: Goku, Pikachu and Astro Boy. For some reason people forget just how influential Astro Boy and how long it’s been around for.
Excluding Pokemon it's got to be either Goku or Sailor Moon. Naruto in 3rd. One Piece I feel isn't nearly as well known outside of anime and manga fans.
I think that Super Saiyan Goku is way more recognizable than base form Goku. Super Saiyan Goku is in all the merchandise and video game cover arts. When I first saw base from Goku, I thought that he was a different character.
Even though Pokemon is #1 and Hello Kitty #2, Hello Kitty's merchandise sales are higher than that of a Pokemon, so yeah, there is hella lot of Hello Kitty merch

The most famous anime character is Goku. As a series, Pokémon beats Dragonball. But when you think of anime? What is the one thing everyone thinks of? Goku. Pikachu is huge, but Goku is bigger than Goku I feel. Dragonball the series isn’t as big as Goku. Goku is like MR. Anime Man at this point.

"Pokemon was the most searched thing on Google in 1996" - Connor
Google was not created until 1998 Sep. 4th
Corey from Corey in the house is the most recognizable characater from an anime.
Is it the first time they have mentioned Doraemon at all in Trash Taste? It's such a popular manga and anime series and i really like it.
Hey us in India know kochikame. I'm 17 now but I vividly remember as a 5-7 year old child watching it dubbed in Hindi on my tv. It's hindi opening song is kind of iconic here.
Childhood classic.
I am actually surprised with how unpopular Anpanman is in the west. In India, it was a pretty staple show alongside Shinchan, Doraemon etc.
I thought tiger mask was popular everywhere because King from Tekken was inspired by it and the whole generation X here in Italy went absolutely nuts for it, but apparently it got only translated in Italian.
Also I thought devilman or yugioh would make it to top 20 instead of beyblade tbh
I think the video title should have been
"Can they beat Goku?!?!?!"
short answer: Shounen-anime
long answer:
- Pokemon (Ash, Misty Brock, Pikachu, Jessie, James and Meowth)
- Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters (mostly Yugi himself and Seto Kaiba)
- Beyblade (In this case, Kai and Rei/Ray are the most noticible ones.)
The list could probably be longer and even include other anime, maybe even Sailor Moon, but that basically sums it up. In any case, I‘ve barely even heard of „Hello Kitty“. As far as I can tell, it‘s just an Avril Lavigne-song.
“Imagine coming close to death and then powering up by just simply getting the sht kick out of you… such an op ability”
Anyone who has read four knights of the apocalypse 👀😶🙃
Yes… yes it is
I thought of Fairy Tail
I have to say. Gigguk's shirt was really good this ep.
I think in my country it will be a tight contest between Goku and Naruto ,then Pikachu ,then luffy then etc

Conner, why you calling us out like that? xD
Bro, KochiKame, this brings back memories from way back, I used to have a massive crush on Reiko.
When an edgy person is using a Bleach profile pic. It really says something about the soul society.
13:00 you just described Detroit
I still remember a mall I'd go to as a child and they just randomly had a Hello Kitty store. I didn't even live a major city at the time
Listening to Connor say Mario like "Marry-o" gives me more joy than it should
Whenever I hear "most recognizable anime character" my mind goes to Goku.
As a bleach fan, i'm glad they only kinda ripped into me for being a bleach fan.
I would say here at South America it's a battle between Goku and Naruto
It make sense, that Pretty Cure is way bigger than Bleach and Demon Slayer.
for information , grant tshirt character are from 67%dasei
I didn't know Fist Of The Northstar was that popular. I'm a HUGE Fist Of The Northsatr junkie but I thought it wouldn't make it to Top 10.
It’s pretty surprising. I’m surprised Astro Boy was as high as it was.
Pikachu, Goku, Luffy, Naruto, and Sailor Moon
That shirt garnt wearing ain't that inertia 67% right.
I'd say that the most iconic anime franchise is Dragon Ball, bc every mom from the early 2000's say "is that Goku" when they walk on you watching any other anime in existence
Anpanman and baikinman always stay true in my memories
Bro my parents are in their late 50s dont watch anime and know who Goku is
I think the most recognizable would probably be Goku or Doraemon.
@@SwifferTWetJetMop
I vaguely remember Disney airing Doraemon in America some years ago but aside from that
@@SwifferTWetJetMop I’m not ready sure either but like every person I’ve shown a pic of doraemon to recognized him. I get what you’re saying though:). Btw it did air in the US on Disney 😊
Bleach being 15, is a God's work. Like number 15 make sense in Bleach's context
Ichi go is the perfect spot for Bleach.
For manga it’s 11th all time doe lol
dude kochikame bring backs memory its fucking hilarious
Is it just me, or is there an optical illusion with Anpanman on the thumbnail? Looking at it straight just shows a silhouette of Anpanman, but looking it at a different angle shows him.
if you took a survey around the world with a characters silhouette only and just added up the number of people on the planet that could recognize them Goku is the champ and its not even close. I dont think you guys understand just how huge he is in the western hemisphere especially latin/ south america. Its literally part of their culture now, young, old doesnt matter
I cant stop looking at Grant's t shirt.
Are Pachinkos the Casinos of Japan?.
Mario is bigger than Pokémon?????
The fuck 🤣😂 hold on I gotta out and play some Mario Go, there’s a Chain chomp outside.
DN is HUGE in Latin America. Ik who goku was because of my cousins before I knew what db was
In the US, there is no question, outside of pokemon ,its Goku and Naruto, You walk into TJ max/ Ross and you see all kinds of merch. People wear naruto stuff and havent even watched the show. If I had to say which one is more recognizable I would give if to Goku.
Anpanman is such a throwback to childhood
i'm a japanese studies graduate in indonesia and each time i introduce myself as such the first weeby thing normies say is always naruto. strangely doraemon doesn't get mentioned as much anymore, sadge, although for boomers it's definitely still at the top and it still has like a cult following
Here in Indonesia most known anime characters (to kids and elders) are;
Doraemon, Naruto, Hello Kitty, Pikachu, Goku...
🤔🤔
Ok where can I buy Garnt's shirt?
Nice pfp
Naruto for sure.
Didn't even know what anime was but still kept seeing and having notebooks of him as a child.
Goku is more famous than Naruto…
@@gabrielrojas5550 debatable

@Empa Nada and my mom says is that Goku? and she's in her late 50s.
tsubasa from captain tsubasa. the entire asia and europe have watched that as kids
I remember watching kochikame back when i was around 13 years old, it just randomly started airing in a kids channel, i actually think it's kinda funny
garnt's shirt 💀
Kochikame is insanely famous in India as well, we all grew up watching it, idk if it's aired noways on TV or not.
Yaa, it's not airing now a days btw!
Nah... Naruto definitely more popular than Sailor moon... And One piece is very popular in German speaking nations and France also
Everyone in my family recognize goku, sailor moon, captain tsubasa or saint seiya because those were the animes that aired when they were growing up.
pls somebody tell me where garnt got that shirt
I think that Super Saiyan Goku is way more recognizable than base form Goku. Super Saiyan Goku is in all the merchandise and video game cover arts. When I first saw base from Goku, I thought that he was a different character.
Even though Pokemon is #1 and Hello Kitty #2, Hello Kitty's merchandise sales are higher than that of a Pokemon, so yeah, there is hella lot of Hello Kitty merch
I have been to Russia in the past, and I can say in Russia people know about pikachu or zholti pokemon like the yellow one. Mario, man ill tell you as an semi proffesional recorder (Blöke Flute) player, man that mario opening song like “na na na na na na... na na na nanana na NANANA” man kids don’t recognize it anymore. Before like 8 years ago kids and teens would go ape for it, and now only adults seem to remember/enjoy the nostalgia it brings, but kids dont know what im playing. Also side not, most former USSR republics have a low gdp per capita so nintendo is not big there, but ive taught english for mid level post ussr oligarchs who have boys who have lot a bunch of original nintendo games and gear. Also strong engineers and coders travel to distant countries especially the United Arab Emirates and return with a Nintendo Switch with some games.
Dio : I've heard enough, I'm dissapointed
Show either a beyblade or a pikachu to somebody Born between 1970-2005 and they will know what it is. (In my country).
Nobody really gives a damn about dragonball tho
7:45 like seriously 🙂
Definitely the most recognizable anime character is Goku if we're not gonna count Pikachu from Pokemon. Naruto and Luffy and Ichigo are popular don't get me wrong but there's just so much more DBZ popularity outside of Japan.
An Pan Man... Kochikame,Evangelion, Doraemon brings back childhood memories. :)
Pokemon is one of the few IPs that have a successful video game, tv show and TCG.
In central america the biggest anime is for sure dragon ball
Speaking of recognizable characters: anyone here willing to share the nuke codes for the lady on Garnt's shirt?
The most famous anime character is Goku. As a series, Pokémon beats Dragonball. But when you think of anime? What is the one thing everyone thinks of? Goku. Pikachu is huge, but Goku is bigger than Goku I feel. Dragonball the series isn’t as big as Goku. Goku is like MR. Anime Man at this point.
damn I thought Black Jack, Lupin III and Conan are definitely on the list
I think that’s only in Japan sadly. Since I moved to America no one here knows any of those.
I love detective conan. I am from india
What manga is on garnts shirt?
"Depending on where I am in the world"
In Japan - Doraemon
In the west - Goku
In the rest of Asia though?? It's not even Luffy. I'm pretty sure it's Chopper.
It's Doraemon in large part of Asia. Doraemon is a household name for little kids even now in India.
It's Doraemon in large part of Asia. Doraemon is a household name for little kids even now in India.
@@susear5939 Ah in India fair enough, I meant more SE Asia. In China, Thailand, Phillipines, Vietnam etc. I think it's pretty close between Chopper and Doraemon.
In Japan,I think it's one piece. Cause it has sold 400 million+ manga there and has its own theme park and so many advertisement
Goku for sure...
Bleach is my favorite anime of all time.
for the question
whilst for number of people it'd be things like DragonBall or Sailor Moon I agree, however a lot of people just know them but don't know they're anime, I'd say even some anime fans don't know it's anime because of how different it is to typical anime, moreso for DragonBall than Sailor Moon
but my answer, and I think this is an obvious one, proper anime figure, you think anime you'll think her
Yuno Gasai
Goku is literally the Mickey Mouse of anime, he’s the first character you immediately think of when you hear the word “anime”
