As long as Road system is not standardized, I doubt even Tesla can get its autonomous driving system working as expected. The problem is not in the technology, but in the road data provided in the field. If you got so many missing data on your database due to different kind road/intersections not recorded and lack of traffic rules, the car wont be able to drive itself.
Tesla autopilot will never work in a country where the people don't follow road laws. Unless the country is willing to have autonomous cars that flout road laws... and that gets sketchy quick. China and India won't be getting autonomous cars till their people can follow rules.
It doesn't solely depend on road rules. If all manufacturers can start relying only on intelligence and neural networks then the problems can be eliminated. With just roads and maps standardised which are static and doesn't account for the ever changing traffic, nothing's gonna change. Tesla will work in India but it will need to understand the dynamics. I am an Indian and roads are always congested, due to various reasons and we often bend rules to our advantage, that is why a vehicle rigid on map and street simulations alone won't make it.

Tesla has the correct approach. Just look at it this way, humans, who can be very good at driving, use just their eyes as a sensor. The potential problem with humans has nothing to do with their ability to drive or any deficiency with their sensors. Problems generally arise when the human is distracted, takes attention away from the road (my car, an ICE vehicle, actually has a sensor that warns me if I am doing that), or just does something dumb (not an unusual occurrence). The idea of a self-driving car is to avoid these shortcomings. Huawei's approach requires the fusion of many sensors. I have worked with this in the aerospace environment and have taught it in technical courses. I know how difficult it can be. Considering the level of technology in China vs. the west, I doubt they can do a credible job.
Wrong. It'as not just distraction as that's just one mere problem. Look at Tesla's effort - it's disastrous, doesn't work properly, and has injured many and caused accidents galore. We aren't even close to getting such a tech if we ever will be. You thoroughly misunderstand tech if you think it can replace it anytime soon.
@@crunchyfrog555 Oh, come on man. I have been driving for half a century, and have had two accidents, both caused by mechanical failures. These failures were not something a self-driving technology could avoid. I also know lots of people who have similar driving experiences. If a large number of people can go that long without a driver induced accident, then I call that a success. As for Tesla's technology, do you have data on that? I am asking sincerely. Sources and numbers. I have to admit, few of the Tesla drivers I know or have run across, use the feature, and it is generally not because they had a problem, but because it is new, and I guess can be somewhat scary.
When we have thousands of self driving cars on the road, if only driver assisted, will be the one and only way to prove this feature. China has so many cameras installed around the country the cars can just use those instead of LIDAR :D
Even if this tech started inadvertantly raming into other cars and throwing itself onto oncoming traffic, it still would be safer than getting into a car with an average Chinese driver.

I don’t think completely autonomous driving is possible. The scenarios of the AI being a taxi or working in the car instead of driving or someone without a drivers license being the sole operator of a vehicle are never achievable but they have already been promised. The edge cases like emergency vehicles are too complex and too rare to ever solve with AI.
Not only that but an AI can easily "hide" any issues (We'd consider it going past its original job as an issue) it may have if it fears being pulled out and reset...You put an AI that can do that in a vehicle and the moment it's found to have those issues it'll shut itself up from any outside comms and try to flee to preserve itself.
@@MegaRazorback Maybe instead of being a coward with such fatalistic endings, the AI can realize that the training data it possess regarding the accident can further develop future AI so that this accident and other such incidents can lessen in frequency
And just 5 years ago someone like you would also say having AI create paintings and photorealistic images would be impossible because it requires imagination and that's simply something that "machines" can't do, yet here we are. If you have a decent understanding of how true AI is built, then you'll know there is essentially nothing that AI can't do, and do it better than humans can. The bottleneck today is simply computation power and data. If humans can drive and handle edge cases, you can bet your ass that AI will someday also be capable. Go back in history far enough and you'll find people who thought sending a message across the entire Earth within seconds with a device that fits in your pocket would be impossible, people who thought flying and going to space would be impossible, a single weapon that could obliterate an entire city to be impossible, etc. Humans 30 years from now will judge your comment about cars driving themselves being impossible with the same kind of sentiment.
@@kanesmith8271 Would we as a species EVER give an AI full freedom to do what it wants if we managed to make one? No we wouldn't, we'd have it locked down tighter than fort knox and the moment we either suspect or know of any issues we'd either kill it or reset it to what "factory" settings the thing was "made" with because the LAST thing we'd ever want is what amounts to in our eyes a rampant AI that's not under our control and if you think we wouldn't do that to the first AI ever made then you don't know human nature very well.
I think what will happen is humanoid robots with advanced AI processors will eventually just do the driving. Not ready yet but maybe in a few years. Then you don't need a self driving car at all and the robots will be able to do a lot more too.

You do realize that the whole idea of autonomous driving pushed by EV companies is at best a marketing ploy and at worst a scam. I tend to see it as the later. EVs are still too expensive and still have major drawbacks (range and charging) to replace ICEs. Autonomous driving features are just a cynical ploy to justify the higher price. On the autonomous driving front, there is no reason that contemporary ICEs cannot implement the same technology. The plain fact is that most use a "fly by wire" approach and could easily be adapted to computer-controlled driving. I have a 2015 American made SUV with automatic low speed collision avoidance braking, for example. There are ICEs with automated parking. This is not that new. Basically, little or nothing would have to be changed in the autonomous driving system to adapt it to ICEs. So, given all that, why do you think ICE vendors aren't jumping on the autonomous driving bandwagon?

@@soumikpaul4768 nural nets only work well when the cars in its area behave relatively predictably. I'd pay to see any automated system that can get through New Deli traffic.

The cat shuts its eyes when stealing cream, and those Chinese hater is that cat
You're absolutely right. Think about why I'm saying that.
It's a lot easier to train self driving in China because vehicular manslaughter is a violation for the rich, not a felony.
I think we need to re-define what a driving license covers, this is a lethal weapon.
All cars are lethal weapons and they just keep handing out licenses to anyone like it's a right to drive...na it's a privilege to have a license to drive.
@@non-human3072go to germany and say that again.
