    Short of a driveway going out straight from the front door, I think the original gate entrance up to the front of the left side of the building, then curving around in a circle across the front of the building, and circling back to the driveway, leaving a nice circle of lawn in front of the building, would look the best IMO.

    •  2 года назад +3

      We will always take the driveway to the edge of the front lawn, so we leave as much lawn as possible. Still unsure which side

    I really prefer option B. The view of your beautiful Chateau is much more centered, more dramatic, more welcoming. Trees are nicely framing both sides, and it just seems so much more artistically inviting! You could still do a circular driveway, just curve it a smidge different when you reach the yard. I see not everyone agrees, here's an artist's opinion! Thanks for including us!

    If it was me, I would make a turning circle or ring road outside the chateau to where the field starts then a straight road to the gateway. You could have a small fountain inside the middle of the circle to make it look grand and line the straight road with bushes or small trees. Just a thought, love the videos xx

    If you put your drive way straight to the château straight to your front door you exit the peek a boo dance that is done with all great houses and estates. You want to come in to your dive and turn right and keep going right until you travel by the wall on your way to the coach house...NOT the château. I fact you need to plant another clump/mound of trees in the spot where you can see through to the road, from the great house but in an off set of the other two small groves. This adds mystery and drama to your entrance. If you just plow a road straight to your house, while practical and utilitarian, it cancels all ambiance. And, ambiance and extravagance is what the château represents. Adrian, Carrol would probably have a better vision for the road. Does the estate have any "follies" structures built for fun?

  • @timwaddell6356

    Option A. Then a sweeping driveway all around the front lawn, to the left and in front of the door, with a drive going off and around the right hand side of the chateau to the stables, to park. Then, after the visit, come back around the chateau to rejoin the circular drive and back down the drive and straight out. I love watching your channel. The plasterwork has certainly been a mammoth task. I can't remember if I made the suggestion of copying 1/2 of the original vertically? That way you can flip it to have a perfect mirror image (Carol had said the top didn't mirror the bottom half). Don't forget to have a day off, so as not to burn yourselves out x x x

    Have you gotten a review of what you want your completed landscaping to look like? Several of the chateau channels that I follow have had drawings done of their existing plantings and future ones. That gives you a good idea of where your drive should be located. It would be a whole lot easier to change now than after you have a large amount of time and money invested in something you would need to change. Just an ideas? Love to see all of your delight in the completion of your tasks!

  • @cherisong1

    I think that if you use the first entrance from the gate the trees frame the chateau more and it will be more pleasing to the eye. Like in garden planning I think having a reveal or surprise is much better than being able to see the whole thing at once.
    If you were to go with the second option then maybe planting a hedge along the driveway running parallel so that as you turn to the long drive the view of the chateau is revealed.
    So many options and I bet all of us adding our views will make it even more confusing

    I think A would be the easiest option and would make the most sense. However, if you are keeping the cars at the carriage house and it's not too much of a trouble, can make a wide sweeping curve so you start at the gate from option A and then bend around to where the end of B is as you get closer to the house. I think that a loop would help make things more convenient when inviting family/guests over so all they have to do is park around in a circle and not much of a hassle for pulling in and backing out.
    I noticed some of the dandelions are already gone to seed. I can't wait for our weather to permanently start warming up so we can get a few warm days here too.

    I think a drive in the center is better because it allows you to also bark up the field in the front to 2 separate areas. Before you decide you need to think about the big picture what do you want to do in the fields, planting orchids, box garden, picnic areas extra. If you have anyone with a drone take picture and if you have anyone followers that can do up a garden idea for you.

  • @Rosa7388
    @Rosa7388 2 года назад

    I think Option A would be best, but if you choose that then it would be more visually appealing to create a stronger curve in the path. If you do that, then it creates interest and adds to the whimsical aesthetic of the chateau. And it allows you continue the curving theme when you create a curving path when you exit the field to go around the chateau to the back parking. If you go with option B, it's not exact symmetry because that path doesn't line up to the door exactly, and with so much symmetry going on with the proportions of the chateau facade, it might look like the road is just slightly off. And it might cost more to create a safe bridge to get from the main road to the field ( it looks like you'll need to do that with option B), which could be money that you could instead spend on a pretty wrought-iron gate and stone posts.
    Keep well and safe🌷

    A drone shot will really help you decide. I would consider whatever makes large vehicle access (and exit) easiest, but I love the idea of a grand circular driveway too! Trees on either side of the driveway in the field area would be lovely too. I like that you work both inside and outside to make it easier to stay motivated and to keep up with your goals. Love those kitchen chairs with their twist backs. Just having a fresh coat of paint on the wrought iron of the chateau's entry will uplift it visually. Adrian, I would think a sawz-all (a.k.a. all-in-one) would make it easier to remove the ivy than the grinder. Personally, I think a more meandering path from the gate entry that curves toward the chateau to reveal it would be more interesting a path than a straight shot that shows the chateau the entire time. It would create a sense of anticipation as people approach the chateau and would give more opportunities for planting beds to create a landscaped feel to the entrance too. It is exciting to see the progress you two make each week.

    I think the original gate entrance but the driveway needs to slowly progress in a winding pattern for landscape aesthetic. It'll look like more of a fairytale castle in the end and not just a driveway for the purpose of having a utilitarian driveway. As the driveway winds you could place small landscaped vignettes in the turns.

    If you're looking to do a long romantic tree lined drive then the first option is the one. However, if not then the second option is correct. If you do the tree lined drive then no one will be able to see the chateau until they're perpendicular to it.
    The second option wouldn't be horrible with a nice radius rather than a hard 90 degree turn at the fenceline.

    My opinion Stick to what the original gate dictates: Go in at the street - go right and go straight to the front door - OR - Go in at the original gate..go right..go straight up and make a large oval/circle at the front door for the turn around to head out - also - off of the circle drive make another right drive to the coach house...you have brought most of the chateau back to its "original" self...so why change the entrance gate now...obviously its always been the original builders plan...stick to bringing it back as close to original as you can. Love your vlogs...good work

  • @boboneill6554

    Keeping it simple is best. The longer drive, the more work to keep it cleared and maintained. Option C,one could plant allees for the view and use the gate by the house.

  • @shaunsworld430
    @shaunsworld430 2 года назад

    Many stately homes aren’t visible from the main roads & once on the drive start to reveal little glimpses of the house.
    If you look at the chateau on a map and straighten the map so the chateau is horizontally straight, if you put a parallel line down the field you seem to end up at the roundabout down to the right of the field….
    I would use the tree in the middle of the field, use the original entrance and bring the driveway along the bottom of the field in line with the main road, once you are in line with the tree do a large curve up into the field and go straight up to the chateau.
    I would place a massive pond/lake next to the tree in the field, which you would then have to curve the drive around.
    Also plant a mass of trees along the bottom and right of the field as you look up to the chateau….

    •  2 года назад +1

      Hi Shaun. We did see from google maps that the direct line hit the roundabout which is too far over. It’s a shame the field is so high to the road. Like the option of a large radius curve into the field and then straight up with trees either side.

    You have two views. The view when arriving, and the view from the Chateau. A curving approach hides the Chateau and makes for a reveal. However a straight approach, trees each side makes for an architectural feature if you have something at the end of the avenue, such as the chateau or a large ornamental gate.

    •  2 года назад

      We will be putting trees either side of the driveway

    • @Nickle314
      @Nickle314 2 года назад +1

      @ Exactly. I would do that. The question is then straight or curved.
      Long walk at Windsor park, abeit on a grand scale. Chateau at one end, gate or folly at the other.
      Or if you make it curved, you get a reveal for an approach.
      However, most of the time you are going to be at the chateau end, and its your place.
      What do you want to see? Avenue of trees, or a wall of trees?

    •  2 года назад

      Love the long walk. Carole and I have spent many days there walking and having picnics. We will be putting trees either side but coming round to perhaps a long curve at the gate onto a straight grand entrance up

  • @suekennard5766
    @suekennard5766 2 года назад

    Carole's idea is better for a couple of reasons - first the symmetry but also will allow you to screen the chateau from the road. You could plant an avenue of trees up the driveway. Although you mentioned cars would be parked at the gatehouse so a driveway to the gatehouse would be better still allowing you to plant an impressive garden in front of the chateau - maybe a parterre.

    I am for the current gate entry with a direct sight line and a circular drive too. Maybe some steps up to the upper lawn due to the sloping. Great way to welcome guests. However if you are doing a tree alley way then the angle coming from the gate direct might hide the chateau so the alternate of coming along the fence and turning toward the chateau would make more sense. But the circular driveway at the end of either would be nice. Amazing the work you have done so far. I especially love your wallpaper choices.

    Option 3 move it so it is definitely 90° so it would be further over to the right when looking at the château from the road and have gates there. Looks more regal that way. I would choose the road to the chateau based upon the access point at the public road. 👍👍👍👍👍 I like the drive as is, entering from the East going straight to and past the back door and onward West to the carriage house but you could continue in a circle around the West side of the Chateau coming to an exaggerated circular front garden driveway setting in the South complete with a large feature in the center of it then exiting back to the short driveway in the East; making the front yard/garden a circular driveway feature that enters and exist from both sides of the Chateau. This would give the visitor a complete view of the entire property and most of its grand buildings as they drive through.

    I think direct to gate has a nice view heading towards the chateaux which seems a more natural aspect than heading in from option B which feels a little off centre. An no need for 2 sharp turns to get there. Also less materials to make it.

    Hello 👋
    Straight route direct to the Chateau, would look stunning if tree lined . Go to the left makes sense and is more logical going to the Coach house for cars , deliveries , storage etc . Love to see a drone view .

      Hi Paul. The driveway will be lined with trees

    I’d vote for “Option A” (the one that is *not* straight in front of your château

  • @hughw8543

    I think there's a "middle way" for the drive. I would start off straight at 90 degrees from the chateau (coming away from the chateau), then half way across the field create a gentle curve so that the drive goes 90 degrees to the existing gate. That gets the best of both worlds: simple and practical access to and from the road, but also the "wow" factor of appreciating the whole facade of the chateau from a fair distance away, half way down the drive.

    The direct route and then to the left towards the carriage house would be my choice. Hope that helps. Getting a drone would be a good idea as well to help make your decision. Thanks for sharing 😍😘

    Depends weather you want a dramatic drive up to the chateau! I think a turning circle can look lovely!
    Could you make a less obscure/shorter road from the side of the chateau? less work & maintenance !❤️

    •  2 года назад

      Hi Sandra. There is already a side road but we want to have a grand entrance way

  • @amayastrata4629

    I personally like a straight road but entering from the doorway of the house so your option a seems too far to the left of the house. Then tree line the road and hedge up the field against the roadway for more privacy. Adds to the romance of the chateau.
    The other option is to use the already established access point and take the road around the side of the field and gently curving to end up on the left side of your house. So, either completely central to your house or to the far left towards the left of the house. Less ostentatious but can still look fairly romantic. However, again, I always say that you’re living there so what you want is for you to really decide. It’s all looking good so far though.

    I think you should go for the option you like best. One option should be speaking louder to you than the other. It's a matter of how it looks FROM the chateau, OR how it looks FROM the road. I think, but I don't know for sure, most people would go for the option of how it looks from the road. Carole, I love how the rails are turning out. The pink tulips you have look very nice!! We will have tulips here around the second week of May. Had a huge snow storm yesterday, it looked like Christmas!!, again. LOL love from Wisconsin

      Hi Kathy. We also had snow last week but only laid over night. Sunshine melted it away next day. Roll on spring sunshine

    90degrees would look better, but from experience of living with a similar situation, any large trucks bringing you furniture etc find it difficult on the turns.

    If you come in surprisingly even road A is great. But: The Chateau is totally symmetric and I am quite sure that the landscape would be too... 🤔

    I know this battery from an other channel I follow @AmbitionStrikes. They have more than one. Very usefull in the garden or where ever.
    If you want a straight line from the Chateau you'd probably end up on the roundabout on the N102. I prefer the left lane because the right lane ends up near the garbage collecting point. By now (2023) you have made a decision probably. Good luck! 🤗

    First, can we just admire the beautiful shot with field of yellow flowers and Chateau in background? Magnificent view! Looking at your driveway options through a drone is good idea before you finalize all that work and time. Keep up the great work! (I like your flowers in front of stair railing also). Yard work is really showing progress.

    Option A. Let me explain why: As it's slighty offset, any vehicles coming up the drive at night will not shine headlights directly into the Chateau. I also think the slightly oblique angle has more interest, if less symmetry. But hey, it's your Chateau - do what you want. 🙂Thanks for sharing.

      I've got another argument for the straight line between the gate and the chateau. From what I can tell the opening in the trees/hedge between the lawn and field isn't in the middle of the chateau, so the proposed straight line (option B) wouldn't meet the steps. IMO a straight run to the road should be exactly in the centre of the chateau, not offset to either side. Otherwise a deliberately angled driveway (option A) would look much better.

  • @David-gx6od

    YES! Carols option B. Beautiful dramatic view for your entrance. You need to stick w straight lines that fit w age of chateau

  • @Lea-bw9wj
    @Lea-bw9wj 2 года назад +1

    I'd be more inclined to do something closer to the first chose. I'd also be more interested in sticking to the original entrance and driveway. I'd also think about what you would see from the chateau and looking out at a driveway in the middle of a field might not be the prettiest. Lastly I'd be keeping in mind that not all chateaus had driveways where you could see them from the gate. Some kept it hidden or so you only saw glimpses then you'd turn a corner and "BAM" you get this amazing view it. It was about the destination. It sounds a little like this might have been the kind of driveway the chateau once had.

    Hi Carole and Adrian, you mentioned getting an aerial view from a drone. I'm wondering if it might just give an insight into where the original driveway was and if it does then you can assess your options.
    Handy new piece of kit you got for a prezzy by the way.
    Best wishes

  • @therobertsuk8498
    @therobertsuk8498 2 года назад +1

    I think a gradual sweep would be lovely, more aesthetically pleasing. Too sharp a turn may cause problems for deliveries, unless you make them use a tradesmen entrance round the back? Depends what the plan is for the front meadow…

    I vote for option A. As it seems to run directly to the front door from the road. Plan B does look better from the chateau to the road but it seems odd to have it run from the gate parallel to the road before turning toward the chateau.

    Adrian have you ever seen an electric pole saw? It extends upwards so you can stay on the ground instead of a ladder. My husband uses his electric pole saw all the time to trim our white pine trees and our 100 year old Maple trees.

    •  2 года назад

      I have seen them but it’s cheaper to go up the ladder. 😂
