  • According to Steinway Artist Barbara Nissman, music is a means of transportation to "a secret world of magic", feeding and nurturing the soul. In this short video, Nissman describes the joy she finds through playing her Steinway, the best-made piano an artist can use to communicate this musical experience.

I concur. I've played pianos all my life. And Steinway is so special, the sound, touch.....the feel. I did fall in love with Bosendorfer, but Steinway D's are my favourite! Music is so deep.

I wholeheartedly agree with her. I love the sound of my Steinway more than any other piano I've played throughout my life. Well, mine is an M. The D would be the only choice of replacement. I do think the Shigeru Kawai is just as good, being the closest to the New York Steinway sound signature. It's only a matter of taste. Bechstein is another incredible piano.

hi ms. nissman. i quit 16 years of piano lessons starting at age 6 and ending when i graduated college at 22. i then gave it all up and went off to medical school pianoless. now some 40 years later i'm starting lessons again. i cannot even read music anymore. i just bought a beautiful new 7 foot grand to motivate me to practice practice practice. i hope it works. you are a fantastic pianist and an inspiration to me : ).

+Edward Ferdon - Congratulations to you and hope that you are loving your new Steinway! Pianos are a bit like people- every soul is different and the choice is so individual -- that is always the challenge for a performer at every concert. I love the NY Steinway because it has such a glorious bass and warm, rich and round colors and every piano has a different character- that is the glory of it- you do find more uniformity with the German Steinways but not as much of a color range and that great NY Steinway bass is usually not there. Wishing you much joy and success with your piano-playing!!

Steinway is expensive for a reason: these pianos are hand-made. I can control the instrument better with Steinway than when I play other brand pianos.

wonderful story and beautiful pianism in the brief parts where this video allowed it to be demonstrated. i agree with her that if you put 4 steinways together and played the same piece they would likely all sound different; their so-called unique "personality" or voice. in the case of the ny piano the variance is just as likely to be due to some pianos being better made than others. i'm still finding quality deficiencies with the ny pianos. why can't they all be made in hamburg?

The multiplicity of character in every piano, brings out subtle differences which are truly magical.
