- As a wildlife photographer who is used to being behind the camera, it was a very new and daunting adventure when I started this RUclips channel. Since the channel started 2 months ago, I have now reached over 500 subscribers. As a way of saying thank, I am giving away one of my prints to a random person. To win this, please subscribe to my channel and leave me a comment. It would be great if your comment could be about what you enjoy about nature and wildlife photography.
Join me as I revisit an old barn which has been very productive over the years with resident Barn Owls and has led to some of my favourite and popular owl images.
Please subscribe to my channel, leave me a comment and ring that notification bell to be notified when I upload new content.

Great to see the owl site again. What I like most about nature and wildlife photography is that you never know what you might see when you get outdoors. Even if you have no luck with the species you're targeting, you'll usually see something interesting either way. At the very least you'll be outdoors getting fresh air and exercise and perhaps a sunset like the one in this video! Keep up the great work Simon!
Thank you for the nice comment. Very true. In wildlife photography you have to accept that you're not going to get a high end image every time. I just love being outside in nature and you're quite right that you never know what you'll see..
It’s nice to see them celebrating your 500 subscribers milestone, currently binge watching. I am currently working abroad and miss my photography and U.K. wildlife. Great channel, content and fantastic images
Bloody "Petrol Heads" lol, but as you said they have saved that site, for now anyway. Keep the vlogs coming. As for the Sunset on the night in question, it was also awesome down here in West Cornwall. Great news on the subscription level, there are not enough UK wildlife vloggers, always landscape after landscape with their annoying 10 stop water shots.
Another very interesting video Simon, your enthusiasm is very infectious. Thank you so much for sharing.
Im hoping i win your stunning print.
Amazing print and amazing videos
Some amazing owl photos you have Simon! Great finish to the vlog, I want fireworks at the end of my videos as well 😆👍
Thanks Espen. Hope you're ok and thanks for the comment. Yes the fireworks was a bit of a bonus and unexpected...
More than happy to spend my time, watching your vlogs Simon. Great content & well presented. Congrats on the 500, good luck going forward.
Thanks Tina..
Excellent once again Simon. Keep them coming!
Beautiful owls. Really enjoying your behind the scenes videos Simon. Great stuff, keep posting!
Thank you Trudie.. have a nice day.
Great video Simon; warm & beautiful light for sure. The closing sunset shot (pre-fireworks) captured the mood nicely - we could do with a few more evenings like that!
Thank you Godfrey. I nearly didn't post the video as there wasn't any photography but was such a beautiful evening I went with it - despite the noise... Hope you're ok.
Great vlog as always. For me the best thing about wildlife photography is just being in the outdoors even if I don't come back with a new image. I think comes across in your vlogs. Congrats on 500 subscribers. Keep up the great work and I'm sure the next 500 will follow in no time.
Thanks Iain appreciate the comments as always. Let's hope so. Thanks again.
Just come across your channel which I'm thoroughly enjoying. Love to photograph all wildlife mainly done birds up til now but wanting to move into other areas such as Deer, Foxes and water Vole etc.
Congratulations on the subscriber milestone, Simon, sure to keep growing too with such great content!
Cheers Martin. Hope it keeps growing also.
Congratulations on 500 subs, Simon! Looking forward to short-eared owl season now...
Thanks Steve. Sorry I missed your comment. Yes short eared owls just round the corner now.
Hey Simon... I just found your channel and subscribed... I too am new to video but have been photographing birds and wildlife for 10 years. I have so much to learn, but watching you and others keep me moving forward on my on channels adventure. Greg
Thank you - that's very kind and glad you like it. Have a nice day.
You are a genuin person and putting out great content, so I’m certain your channel will continue to grow. Keep up the good work 😊 It’s an amazing photo you’re giving away!
Congrats on reaching 500 subs! Absolutely earned. Keep it up.
Thanks Sebastian. Hard going but good fun and getting there..
Great video again Simon. I’ve been a subscriber since the very first one and they get better each time. Always find your work inspiring and that print hanging in my hallway would remind me, each time I leave the house in the early hours why I do it and how much I still need to improve 🙂
Thanks Karl. Really appreciate your comments and support.. glad you like them.
Keep up the great work :D
What I love about wildlife and nature photography is that you always find something worth taking a picture of, even if you don't get to see your primary target.
Brilliant mate. Some great images of the barn owls..👍
Another great video Simon I have followed you from the start , I watch every single one great work and also great pics. For me about the photography is the unknown you never know what you are gonna get and that’s what thrills me to go out as much as I can. And when you get that photo of the bird etc it was worth it even if your standing in -2 degrees!
Congratulations Simon! Great content is always rewarded :)
Another Amazing video Simon, thanks for your previous advice, I have successfully found two barn owl locations, not far from where I live so happy with that. Look forward to more of your videos.
Thanks Jonathan and no problem for the advice. Glad you managed to find a couple of good locations so looking forward to seeing the results.

Thank you Peter...
Again nice vlog Simon and congrats on reaching 500 subs!
a nice photo and great location, I have been trying to photograph a buzzard myself for a long time but in vain, good luck Simon and I will continue to follow you
Thanks Rudy. Buzzards are quite tricky to photograph as they are very nervous birds. Good luck with it and thanks for the follow.
Keep up the good work Simon another great one
Thanks Nigel..
If this video proves only one thing (and by the way it's a great little video) is it doesn't matter how softly you tread, or how cunning you are stalking your given target, it's that at times the world around you can still be a noisy place indeed.
Another awesome video! Keep up the great work!
Thank you Jack..
Binge watched all the videos - very enjoyable. If I win the print I'd like you to sign and date the front - not the back, just in case you ever go on to win the Wildlife Photographer of the Year comp' at the Natural History Museum!
Regards,
Nick
Thanks Nick I'm very pleased you like them. I've never entered that competition but may do in the future. SINWP - Bird Photographer of the year 2018 was my biggest in the past couple of years so the natural history museum sounds very appealing
Simple no nonsense approach to vlogging.. and of course awesome content.!
Thank you..
Lovely photo. Thank you for your help for improving my photography 😁
Thanks Chris and no problem. I'm glad you find it useful.
Fantastic videos Simon, keep up the good work - you inspire me to get out more with my camera ! 👍

Absolutely loving the channel and videos.....super inspired and keen to get out myself now!
Thanks Phil. Glad you like it and hope you manage to get out.
@@SimonWantling has the competition winner already been decided?
@@philbooth319 Hi Phil, my wife will pick the winner this weekend and I'll announce it in my next video which I hope to release this weekend time permitting. 👍
Another great video Simon. It just goes to show how much time we spend trying to figure the best times and places and habitats of what we hope to capture. I sent you a note about coming to England in February. Our plans have been confirmed a bit more. We will be in London, Yorkshire and up to Edinborough. I understand that there is quite a population of barn owls there. Do you know of any productive locations or have contacts there? I love the print and would be honoured to hang it on my wall by the way....nudge, nudge. Thanks for the great content.
Glad to hear you have confirmed a trip to the UK. Glad you like the short eared owl image. Afraid it's now been claimed by the winner but it is available through my website which is www.simonwantling.co.uk I might run another print give away soon so perhaps keep a watch out for that one. We do have good numbers of barn owls here in the UK. Some better that others in terms of places. I do know someone from Yorkshire so I can make some enquires for you on a good location. Thanks
Great new vlog commend the time and effort expanded on it you deserve to do well, keep it up
Thanks a lot Mark..
Great video Simon, have watched all of yours now and look forward to more to come. Following on Instagram as well 👌
Thank you. Really glad you enjoyed them..
Lovely. keep it up, I may start pestering you to take me out on a workshop in the spring. ;)
Thanks Brian. If you keep an eye on my website, I'll be releasing some 2020 workshop dates soon so watch this space..
Hooo man, excellent photo... I like so much your videos, Hi frond Colombia 🙃🇨🇴
Thank you very much. Glad you like them and thanks for the comment..
🙂 Excellent 🙂
Dear Simon, just found your channel and really enjoying it! I was wondering whether you use a hide or any sort of concealment when photographing the barn / short-eared owls hunting?
Thanks, Jake
Hi Jake, thanks for your message and glad you like the channel. I tend to use hides for most my wildlife photography as it's very much project based. If I'm photographing barn owls after dark then yes, I'm in a hide but when the barn owls are hunting during the day they are often preoccupied hunting and dont notice you so much. Generally speaking I'm usually I'm a popup hide by Tragopan or a simple throw over cover or ghillie suit. Hope that helps.
@@SimonWantling Thanks Simon, that's very helpful :)
Keep up the good work your channel is getting interesting you’ll have well over a 1000 subscribers before you know it think we can learn and enjoy at the same time 😜
Thank you Mike, that would be nice. I have a lot planned plus some sponsorship now so will be reviewing their products in an upcoming video so looking forward to that.. thanks again.
Hi love your videos very much
Can i ask do the Owls always take little notice of the lights as i am thinking of trying it.Would the rotobright 48 work?.Also away from a set do you think the lights would be ok for Badgers and foxes. Thanks
Hi Adrian, thanks very much for your comment, I'm really pleased you like them. Regarding the lights for the owls, it takes a little time and patience but they don't seem to mind it at all. They were perfectly for Badgers and foxes and although a harder technique than using flash I believe it's better for the animal and produces a more natural light. At the end of the day, with continuous lights it's up to the owl whether it lands or not. Please don't think you need to buy expensive lights, as I had these in my studio anyway. There are some much cheaper LED battery powered lights in Amazon which work just as well. Yongnuo I think called the YN300 which I also own and work very well. Hope that helps. 👍
@@SimonWantling Thanks so much for your great reply it is very helpful indeed.I enjoy watching your videos very much.
I forgot to ask do the lights have to be used often for them to get used to it ir can you get lucky quickly
The more you out the lights out the easier they will get used to it basically. If you find a Badger set then I find just turning up and setting the lights up as a one off are fine. Doesn't seem to bother them at all. Thanks
@@SimonWantling Thank you Simon very helpful.
Hi, Good video shame it was spoiled a little by those guys having a BARNEY on there bikes.
Thanks Russell, yes I wasn't expecting the event to be on but still went with it. The rocket cars where even louder of you can imagine that..
