Bakersfield here. Yes it's dangerous and crime-ridden, but we also have the distinction of being the most polluted city with the worst air quality in the country! What a time to be alive.
Not sure about today, but in the 20th century, you had folks from Bakersfield or nearby that lived their whole lives there that talked like Okies or Texans. Their parents went there during the Great Depression and brought their ways with them and they ended up talking and thinking like them.
@@jondstewart Those folks are still there, alive and well living just outside of Bakersfield in Oildale. It’s bizarre hearing that accent knowing where they live.
Lived in California most of my life, you are going to need a good amount of money to live even in a decent city, let alone the good ones. It is so freakin expensive here, so good luck.
Yes! The house we used to live in in Laguna Niguel is worth a million-and-a-half dollars now. I can tell you my parents didn't pay that much for it 30 years ago LOL
As a British visitor, I found San Francisco incredibly scary, far worse than LA. The area near to the civic centre was full of homeless and addicts. I know people can’t always help their circumstances but it was very intimidating and disappointing. For years I had a romantic view of SF from television and films. The people were rude, not friendly and unhelpful, which was a contrast to the better parts of LA where people generally wanted to make us welcome.
That's so unfortunate. Sorry about that. I'm from LA and used to love visiting SF. I've been many places in the world and SF was one of my favorites. It used to be such a fun place to visit. I'll never return.
@@YA-qj8fx I have always loved America because people are generally very kind, particularly if you need help but SF was very intimidating. When in Las Vegas we went on a coach tour with some lovely people from West Virginia and Wisconsin to the Grand Canyon and we are still in touch 25 years later and as I say the nice parts of LA, people were open and friendly. I suppose SF due to its immense wealth from Tech industries, will be a draw for disenfranchised people trying to make a new life, hence the homeless problem.

Oakland is at its worst this year, and alot of the shootings seem random..it's like..all the criminals are just trigger happy or high on crack, speed, or whatever drug they're taking now. Even the nice areas in Oakland are dangerous now like Lake Marit. Oakland is litterally Hell on earth.
California as a whole is like this. The entire west coast actually. Everybody in liberal/democrat areas are on meth, fentanyl, and are ready to shoot at a moments notice. Disarming the population and making guns hard to get for regular people backfired as usual with democrat policies.
@@JesusChrist2000BC nothing to do with politics…. I felt pity why there are many homeless in the US. I'm from the Philippines and lots of people here in my country wanted to go to America. But when I saw the real situation I can tell myself the homeless there is worst than my country. I hope your government can do solutions with the problem.
@Michelle Everywhere you go in the US there's homeless people. Sad that people like you like to pretend that the homeless problem doesn't exist in each and every state in this country.... It does
It didn't used to be like this. I tell a lot of people in the Philippines when I visit the truth, USA was great until the 2000s decade. The good times are in the past.
I’ve lived inbetween Oakland and emeryville for most of my life (I’m 22) as a child I saw my parents mugged infront of me , almost died in drive by when they shot the wrong apartment, dad nearly died from being jumped for no reason , and homeless never changed they just move the homeless groups into different streets, had gotten threatened to be killed by my neighbor and the police never came and just left a call checking in 6 hours later. There’s many groups in the city that want to change Oakland for the “better” but essentially collect donations, don’t do anything and just pat themselves in the back. This place is the Wild West.
And yet, they keep voting the same people into office. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Californians can't get out of their own way.
I got jumped one night 2 blocks from my apt. around 24th St./Telegraph. The hospital kept me for 5 days cuz my head injury was so bad. I got some free counseling sessions afterwards and had to get a copy of my police report. One day my counselor said "did you know you're actually a black man?" (I'm totally white, my assailant was black, not that it really matters) I asked her what are you talking about??? She said, "on your police report they put your race down as black." Why would they do that? Easy--it's so they could list as 'black on black' violent crime and that way they wouldn't have to investigate it. While I did have a lot of good times there too, I'm never going back to Oakland. Or CA.
When visiting Belmont beach and staying at an Air BnB last month in San Diego, I encountered a friendly elderly man on the beach with his family. He wasn’t that sharp, but told me he came with his parents from Mississippi when he was 10 years old and bought a home in the early 1970’s for $25,000 and been there every since in the same place and that he’d love to come to Alaska one day where I live. A common working man that lives in San Diego proper can afford it because he’s been there so long. That’s the key unless you’re in an extremely professional career or rich!
emeryville is carved out of oakland just for corporate tax reasons. it’s the scared yuppies keeping tax $ out of oakland that’s the problem, not the people
I've actually heard that the absolute SAFEST city in California is Avalon, for obvious reasons, riff raff and gangbang trash can't exactly drive or walk there to depreciate it.
Boring though, because there's nothing but souvenir shops and little restaurants that only serve hamburgers and french fries. And imagine having to ride a boat every time you want to go to a department store, hardware store, grocery store that has everything, or to see a specialist doctor or dentist. And in the winter you can't even swim.
Avalon isn’t really a city; it is too small. By your criteria, you could rank Mountain Pass (pop. 30) as safest because everyone knows everyone else and there is no one for the criminals to victimize
Tiny little cult area. The only sane people i met were the CHP there. They are the glue that holds the whole place together. Piss anyone off there and your pad gets ransacked and nobody saw a damn thing. Some of the business owners there are above the laws of humanity.
Just saw San Francisco in the news and it was about a glass shortages for vehicles. The car break-ins are so out of control, the vehicle window replacement companies are having a tough time finding enough replacement glass windows to make the repairs. At the nicer hotels the staff will ask their tourist guests if they are planning to use a rental vehicle. They have been recommending to use transportation services such as Uber or taxis to their tourist destinations. Even in broad daylight you can witness car break-ins at all the popular tourist spots. Tony Bennett's iconic song for San Francisco no longer applies due to the eyesore and crimes that plague this once beautiful city. Most of the cities east of San Francisco are also infested with crimes
Thank-you Leroy for the information on San Francisco! OMGOSH! It is so hard to believe how bad it is but let me tell you, crime seems to be increasing everywhere lately! Pretty scary. You are so right though, Tony Bennett’s song 🎶 sadly doesn’t seem to apply anymore. It is good to know this in case anyone is thinking of visiting San Francisco this summer or going there on business. If they anticipate renting a car 🚗, it is good for them to be forewarned about car break in’s! Thanks again for telling us what you saw in the news! Take Care Leroy!😁
I worked at the Legion of Honor and the de Young Museums (probably the museums he was talking about in the video,) and we had big electronic billboards, and 3x5 cards that we had sitting on the front desk for every guest telling them to NOT LEAVE ANYTHING OF VALUE in their cars, that it was a high theft area. Inevitably there’d be someone crying and glass everywhere in the parking lot several times a day. Police patrolled, but until they start prosecuting these crimes, nobody was gonna stop. My husband and I have had our car windows smashed constantly when living by Golden Gate Park. And our car stolen a bunch of times when living by Twin Peaks. They target tourist because they assume they’ll have valuable stuff in their cars. It’s why I never want to live in a touristy area again. A famous author was murdered for his camera while standing out in front of his own house in the Haight Ashbury district a couple of years ago taking photos. They’ll smash your head and grab the camera from off of your body.
@@karenstrycharz1499 thanks for being a Karen, Karen. Around 1980, I drove down one of Oakland's boulevards at night. At an intersection of two of the widest, and busiest streets were about a dozen scantily dressed 'night girls' packed in a circle. I think they served as a collective lookout for cops. I guess the 'coast was clear', because when the light turned green, the circle opened up to reveal a topless woman in the center. Yep. I was ostracized, growing up in that area, for two reasons: I refused to participate in crime, and I quit doing any and all drugs. It was as if I was the criminal. Moved to a peaceful conservative town in another state when I turned 17 (parents allowed me to, they kept touch with me), my life was 20X better immediately.
I thought Bakersfield and Kern County would be in your list! Back in the seventies and eighties my mother was a social worker at Kern Medical Center. Violent crime was so rampant, young physicians who wanted specialize in trauma medicine did residencies there! While in college I had a part time job as a welfare worker. Part of my job involved home visits. One of my clients lived in such an awful part of town I had a police escort go with me into the apartment and another officer stayed with the car! Plugging my hometown here. When you consider cost of living, Fresno really is a great place to live. People love to make fun of us but the fact is, crime is no where near as bad as these other places. That’s why people who work remotely are flocking here from the Bay Area. It’s driving up home prices as a result.
A friend of a friend of mine had a house in San Francisco. He re-converted the garage back from an extra bedroom and parked/locked his car safely inside the garage. He also installed a fence and gates, and a mail slot in the garage door. He also put in an intercom on the gate. The local homeless would buzz his intercom and scream “Let us into your garage! We wanna break into your car!”. They also tried to break into his garage, but he would bring the hose through his living room and spray water out the window onto them, driving them away. He sold the house and moved away after that. This was just before things started going really bad.
SB is my hometown as well. Every time I go back, it saddens me. The height of the Carousel Mall was a long time ago. Just about everything worth a damn has closed down. At least the food spots are still good, though.
Cops in California actually tell citizens to beat up/hurt burglars, taggers, trespassers and anyone who poses a threat to your property, hurt them badly. Cops say it all time that they wouldn't follow up on a police report if criminal trys go after property owner. What I'm told by em "its not what we know, but what we can prove" always ensure evidence points towards them as aggressor. Stories here of burglars being shot at the doorway and pulled in before the body hits the porch so it can be self defense.

I have been to more than a few of the cities on this list during my travels over the years. Nice to see the entire Mappy family in the video this time. Oakland, Stockton and San Bernardino are the cities that I really did not want to spend time in. By the way, I read online yesterday that a church Pastor was shot and killed leaving church and going to his car in Compton.
I just recently moved from Stockton to a whole different state. I can’t even tell you how my mental health has drastically changed for the better since leaving.
It is REALLY SAD!! We left Illinois in 1979, moved to Oakland, it was REALLY nice back then, but we later moved to Stockton in the Western Ranch area and bought a house. The area started to go "down", so retired and moved to Arizona
Also, if you go up past Sac and the Bay, in the northern woodsy and mountainous regions of the state, you will be horrified by the sheer number of posters for missing women, most often indigenous women and WOC.
I’ve been to almost every single city on this list, and I can tell you that Oakland, Stockton, and San Bernardino are the worst cities I’ve ever been to in California. Compton should’ve also been mentioned because it’s kind of like Oakland: run down, graffitied, crime-ridden, etc.
I have very fond memories growing up in Lakewood, however I did get into fights every day after school, and the local hoodlums gave my poor dad hell. He had barbed wire on the roof just to try and deter the hoodlums from jumping house to house every night. My next-door neighbors were heroin dealers among even worse things. What a sham to have such a beautiful state be so crime ridden.
I was born in Monterey Park hospital in Los Angeles in 1948 moved to Bakersfield, then Fontana and spent my middle teenage years in Riverside up until 1967 when I moved to northern VA with my mom. All I remember about southern calif was that it was a great place to be in those days, peacefull and beautiful, My parents never had to worry about me being snatched by strangers. There was no homeless or drug problem to speak of. The state now is being governed by criminal gangs and corrupt polititians. Get rid of them and soon things can get back to the way it was.
Other dangerous places in SoCal are Palmdale & Lancaster, South LA , Compton (going back to bad), East LA, Huntington Park, Wilmington, parts of Anaheim (aka AnaCrime), Hemet, Desert Hot Springs.

I'm from Southern California, living in Kern County about an hour and a half from LA. I can definitely confirm the state of a lot of these places. You have to be careful and mindful, depending on the area you find yourself in.
There are no native Americans from SanFrancisco left alive. A living born in San Francisco native is also hard to find; these places along the warm bay attract people from all over the country and the diversity of industries allows for a strong economy that attracts people from all over the world. So its very competitive to stay here.
My father was born in San Francisco 1919. He said: before World War II a man or a woman could’ve travel any part of the city at three in the morning no problem
I am a 40 year resident of Ca, crime dropped and has gotten better all over California.. The 80s and 90s were actually dangerous. I have lived in Signal Hill for 4 years, I never felt unsafe..Crime typically happens to those who are involved in Crime.. California is pretty safe, except for a few small pockets like anywhere.( The homeless have been in California forever, nothing new). Tourists see poor areas and immediately equated them to high crime, when they are just poor.
As a lot longer resident of CA, growing up in a San Diego suburb near the Pacific ( not swanky), coming to the LA area for college, then living in several areas from Agoura ( still actual sheep on the hillsides), N. Hollywood, Redondo, now Long Beach (more affordable to buy), it’s way the heck more crowded and there are areas that have definite crime issues. People living on top of one another doesn’t help. Green space has disappeared, traffic is truly horrible, and even less desirable places are quite expensive. I think it’s a lot easier to be homeless in CA than in MA or NY or Maine, for one thing, and I beg to differ on the homeless issue. It’s very much escalated compared to days gone by. Also, if u offer services, they will come. That’s what I see in Long Beach. It’s a catch-22.
@@Soapboxstomper: A lot of those people move back in when they find out Texas or Arizona won't help them much when they get sick or old (e.g. Medicaid only for people on SSI and no state supplement for the Federal SSI) and any job that includes tips pays $2.13 an hour. Berkeley here: this city has gone down dramatically in the 18 years I've lived here and there are no signs of it getting any better, only worse because of it being sandwiched between Oakland and Richmond. Strongarm robberies of people's laptops are a regular occurrence in the coffeeshops, day or night and the police response is next to useless - they're too busy doing whatever it is that they do to address crime problems in a meaningful way. The streets are decrepit and nearly undriveable in some places, with so many homeless encampments with feces and vomit on the sidewalks to make your walk a little more interesting. The homeless are often aggressive, sometimes coming into places of business, like restaurants and cafes, to hit people up for money or to destroy the restrooms with excrement or graffiti.

And California is one of the most expensive places to live. I live in Northern California and pay $24,00 a month to live in the ghetto. It's ridiculous to pay that much to walk out your door and worry about being harassed by homeless people or caught up in a gun fight between gangs.
I remember driving to Emeryville to pick up my mom from work. Me and my boyfriend at the time stopped at a burger place to get food, and while we were waiting, two tweakers started fighting each other in the restaurant. One pulled out a pocket knife and the other picked up a chair. The one tweaker put the chair down and grabbed a broom instead, and threw it at the other tweak. They started screaming and running all over the place. Everyone in the restaurant were bursting out laughing, all me and my ex could do was just sit there shocked.
I have lived in Oakland more than 25 years and worked in Emeryville for 24 years and have never been robbed or beaten up so question the given odds. Much higher police to civilian ratio in Emeryville snd homes have appreciated 6-7 fold in past 30 years. Yes cars are vandalized and gun shots occur almost daily but there is an effective shot spotter.
I just knew Stockton would be here somewhere. I hate that we’re up there in crime. The only positive that I can see is that when you experience a harder life here, everywhere else can feel so much safer..it was definitely a culture shock for me, leaving the state and seeing others feel “unsafe” in certain areas that I would be perfectly fine in.

I’m from SF/Oakland and now live in Stockton, Ca. My husband and I work, raised our daughter pretty good. In my opinion it’s no better than in other city. You make life your best life where you live.
The crime and homelessness issues in Cali started to elevate after Governor Brown decided to empty the jails of "non-violent" offenders. I'm from a Los Angeles suburb and moved to a nice small Southern Nevada town several years ago after witnessing an exorbitant rise in crime, drugs and homelessness in my LA area hometown.
The first of the downfall was when Ronald Reagan defunded and released mental patients. They created the rampant homelessness and increased crime in the 1980s. There was also Prop 13 which defined schools, police and fire, etc. I saw it all and it makes me sad.
@@toughbutsweet1 I'm actually not so sure about that. Our abnormal psyche class actually mentioned that exact thing but they said it actually a myth that mental patients enact violence/crime. @@Soapboxstomper you and Dave Smith are right actually. Mental health problems have gotten a lot worse in SOCAL but they're not the reason crimes have increased here also. Sure mental health contributes to the crimes hikes in Cali but I would say the crime increase is done by competent individuals. I stopped by to visit a friend one time in Stockton. A murder had happen nearby. Later I found out the police were able to solve that murder. Someone from Oakland was visiting someone and that guy had committed the murder. My friend told me that a lot of the crime in Stockton are committed by people coming in from Oakland, Pittsburgh, Antioch, Richmond among others. He said local law enforcement has a name for these Bay Area people who come to the Central Valley to commit crime. My friend had noticed in the local newspaper that quite a few perps are from those cities. Which matches what I see when reading the local newspapers in the SF Bay Area. Certain Bay Area cities often times seem to be the source of criminals.
people from the Bay Area are quite insidious. Most come from families of crime meaning it's generational. They don't stop unless they're locked up for life (rare) or they're killed.
I thought of Stockton as soon as I read the title. I was in Stockton only once and that was only a drive thru, but Stockton has a bad reputation. I live in Orange County and had no problem, but that was back in the Fifties and Sixties. Pomona was the place to avoid.

Native to Long Beach here. I can tell you that Signal Hill is actually really nice with expensive home the higher you go up the hill of course. The reason Signal Hill is even on this list is because it’s low lives that are coming from Long Beach and causing the ruckus.
I watched this entire video half expecting to find L.A. on this list. I confess I'm a bit disappointed--and relieved at the same time, because I actually like L.A.
Alan, I did too & was equally surprised, as you were, that LA. was not on the list! I was shocked San Francisco was on the list because I live in Massachusetts, so we hear nothing negative about this city here. I absolutely would hesitate to visit that city now & a good reason why Nick’s videos & blog are so important ( for tourists like us who know nothing about this state!)!His video is so informative, as always but presented in a clever( funny!) interesting way!
hey on the brightside of oakland, its probably the best place to be shot in california. they have the best trauma/gunshot wound hospital in cali and i think close to the best in the whole country. cuz well, they get a lot of practice. apparently thats where a lot of doctors get their training.
Ersie Joyner, the retired Oakland Police Captain who was shot six times in West Oakland while he was pumping gas, was rushed to Highland Hospital Emergency because THAT'S the place to go.....he is recovering!
Back in the 90s the Army was sending its doctors to South LA for awhile when the gangbanging was out of control. Seemed like that was the best place for them to learn how to treat wounds from high-velocity gunshots, the type you see in war
Compton's martin Luther king hospital had that title back then also. It had very poor hospital services and staff that let patients die due to neglect that's. How it got its nickname "killa king hospital. But the ICU staff was the best in the nation for a while.
My friend that lived in California for over 30 years, said that Oakland is like Detroit with Palm trees..😂😂 I love LA, it just depends on what area you are in.
@@brothertspoon5899 Interesting. I grew up in the Bay Area and occasionally visited the east Bay (Oakland, Berkeley, Fremont). I never saw them. However, I moved out of state a quarter century ago, so the palm trees may be a newer arrival.
Don't go. Tourists are avoiding The City, conventions moved to other places, restaurants and nightclubs are shutting down, most of the Financial District executives work from home now, the homeless and criminals are treated better than the residents, and Kate Steinle is dead. SF used to have a vibe you could feel even while driving on the Skyway. Now it feels dead. People are moving out as quickly as they can. This is what happens when you put lunatics into City Hall.
So glad my only visit to California was 12 years ago. I can now remember it as a fairly decent place instead of the cesspool it is now. Won’t be going back anytime soon.
My sister's family have been living in Anaheim near Disneyland since the late 1970s and I must say the area is as safe as can be. Of course if you are looking for trouble anywhere, you will find it.

Don't be afraid to come to our beautiful state just because of a youtube video. The world is a dangerous place. California has the best of everything. You can be surfing in the ocean and two hours later be skiing down a mountain. We have deserts and forests,Mountains and sea shores and everything in between. We have more diversity in everything than anyplace else in the world. If you want to hang around the cities and get mugged that is also available too. The Tenderloin area in San Francisco has the largest open air heroin exchange in the Northern Hemisphere if not the world. We also have Six Flags in Northern Cal and Magic Mountain in the south.
Just know which safe cities to land in & safe hotels or trailer areas to stay in. We have plenty of beautiful places to see. This video only focuses on the cities to avoid.
TheName'sEllen I disagree I been to New Orleans and I seen much worse out there than out in the worst cities in California. A lot of houses in New Orleans are broken down with decay and you'll even see streets with a whole row of abandoned homes just like Detroit. I feel that we got it better out here than they do.
Another Cali town that I recommend people avoid is Crescent City (right near the Oregon border). Yikes, is that place methed-up!! I knew nothing about the place when I went there for a weekend vacation. I've never felt so unsafe. It's really bad there. I was born in Oakland, so I'm familiar with dangerous places. You couldn't pay me to go back to Crescent City.
Red Bluff. Had no idea. I used to spend my summers there with relatives 50 years ago. Used to run communities meetings in Oakland and moved. Citizens are dysfunctional....emotional rants with counter-productive solutions.
I live right next to Richmond and North Richmond is especially iffy. My friend had been robbed multiple times in her own home until she moved more up Hilltop. My brother’s car was jacked and found abandoned in Vallejo without its battery and sadly, his sweater. Ask anyone that lives in or around Richmond and they’ll tell you their own stories or stories they’ve heard. My parent’s car were literally broken into multiple times without them taking anything. They wrote “mofo” on the screens piled with dust and just created a mess without taking anything- confusing but funny. I also take the Richmond/Beryessa Bart route and the stops around Oakland-Coliseum always brings the scary looking people. Drug addicts that pace back and forth and overall unpredictable.

Plugging my hometown here. When you consider cost of living, Fresno really is a great place to live. People love to make fun of us but the fact is, crime is no where near as bad as these other places. That’s why people who work remotely are flocking here from the Bay Area. It’s driving up home prices as a result.
I was just there a week ago. Hated it honestly.
@@NickJohnson It's a great place to live, not a great place to visit. love your work man.
My brother moved to Fresno from LA for work about 10 years ago. He's my happier.
I'd rather be in jail than live there 🤣
A friend of a friend of mine had a house in San Francisco.
Omg that's like some movie! I can't believe it's gotten that bad!
SB is my hometown as well. Every time I go back, it saddens me. The height of the Carousel Mall was a long time ago. Just about everything worth a damn has closed down. At least the food spots are still good, though.
Yeah not much development in there.

San Bernardio is nice compared to Wilmington Harbor area Los Angeles
I love Oakland, I stay away from San Francisco.

I remember driving to Emeryville to pick up my mom from work. Me and my boyfriend at the time stopped at a burger place to get food, and while we were waiting, two tweakers started fighting each other in the restaurant.
Someone from Oakland was visiting someone and that guy had committed the murder.
