    I wasn't clear---the missing coils were not inside the iPad. This iPad first went to a local shop who ruled out bad screen. It was sent to us for logic board repair as a logic board in the back housing. Christy put on her test screen and confirmed that it did not turn on, and then she noticed the missing coils. The device was then put in my queue for advanced troubleshooting. I hope that clears up why this job wasn't as easy as just soldering on the missing coils. In addition, you can see that the coils were broken so we would not have been able to measure them anyway--the metal fastener edge of the coils were still soldered onto the board.

      I was wondering about that myself - that the inductors must be in there somewhere. I am not used to people calling them coils but I knew what you meant.I am working on 2 Kindle Fire 777 tablets right now that kids shorted out by trying to use the worn out charge ports. I replaced a couple of diodes and the TVS diode, but the battery still will not charge. So I had to guess which shield to pull in order to find the charging chip, BQ24296M.
      Luckily I guessed correctly, but caused a tiny 0201 resistor to disappear into the Chip Quik while removing the shield. Fortunately I have the other tablet for reference.
      I am still learning SMD soldering, and I have some hot tweezers coming soon.

    Love this. I think about how appliances are readily repairable. In fact, I had a problem with my Whirlpool Duet washer recently. I found support online from the manufacturer about how to troubleshoot it. When I opened the required panel, inside I found sealed in a plastic bag instruction on how to troubleshoot the fault codes the washer generated. It has an exploded parts diagram as well as a wiring schematic. All provided by the manufacturer. Granted, anyone with a screwdriver and a 10 lbs hammer could repair it given these instructions where a device with components 100 or 1000x smaller is far more specialist, it should still be available to those that have the ability to do so.

    This was a real impressive and eye opening video, Jessa! I actually learned quite a bit about a lot of different things going on with these devices, the difficulties that third party repair facilities, like iPad Rehab and others, have in getting technical information and not being able to easily get either quality third party parts or OEM parts.
    The mining aspect of these basic minerals to make these types of devices was a shocker with using very young child labor ( that was really appalling using very young and very small children to work in these very tight, close quarters and dangerous mining tunnels ).and
    The info you supplied on the right to repair electronic devices was very interesting and illuminating, as well.
    I don't like throwing away electronics, either and probably why I hang onto smaller, older electronics I have purchased over the years that no longer work.
    I do not know what Apple actually does to “recycle” these devices to be able to recycle parts and materials, though.
    I know they use recycled materials for some things and some of the obvious parts that make up these devices seem to get properly recycled,
    but I am not sure about all the board level stuff and materials inside the LCD panel, itself.
    I really hope these devicd makers DO NOT simply send the device innards to get shredded and basically waste whatever parts and materials that could be truly recycled simply just get crushed up into something else or get crushed up small enough to end up in a landfill somewhere.
    Don't know too much about what percentage these computing devices truly get recycled for reuse in some fashion.
    In addition, I am learning things about small board scale electronics that I think , at my age, I am actually getting to learn a little about, as well.
    Really good video, Jessa

    Coming from related field,in the past life I was trained and completed a radio & tv mechanics trade in those days,the 60-ties I am talking about,
    We had at our disposal all the relevant schematic information and I can tell you it was easy and fun to work within electronic industries.
    So now I can see how frustrating it is for you to try and fix the current stream of new products. There in lies the problem,for the manufacturers and consumers of this products to have a constant flow of sales and stream of $ earnings so Apple will not allow you to have the info,because every iPhone,iPad,iPod you fix there goes 500-1000 $ out of their pocket.
    By the way I have an iPad I bought in 2011 and it is working just fine after all this years. I am a fan of Apple products but I do not change them very often. Just a year ago I changed iPhone 4 witch is still operational,with iPhone 6s and am still learning. This technology has run me over and mentally can not keep up with it.

    I just have a question : where are the inductances gone? If they have popped out of the bended board, they should be roaming inside the case, don't they? You could resolder them or replace them or find their references and order them easily (or salvage them from another board), can't you?

    Hey, Jessa, I love watching you fight The Good Fight.
    I have an audio-production tip, if I may: Your microphone level drops abruptly to silence when you stop speaking. Although removing background noise is a laudable goal, sharp cutoffs like these tend to sound harsh and unnatural. I don't know the details of your audio signal chain, but I would guess that the cutoff is caused by a noise gate that's set to attenuate to minus infinity or some other extreme value. If you have control over these parameters, try setting them to attenuate only 12-20dB. You can also make the transition more gradual. This will clean up the signal during quiet passages while still leaving some 'comfort noise' that provides continuity for the listener. You could also try adding high- and low-pass filters before the gate to remove rumble and hiss. Active noise reduction might also prove useful if applied judiciously. Often, the trick to effective noise reduction is splitting the workload across a chain of processes. Divide and conquer!

    • @Hermiel
      @Hermiel 5 лет назад

      Of course, putting a microphone right up to your pie hole is the surest and purest way to increase your signal-to-noise ratio, and doing so dramatically reduces the need for gates and other noise-reducing processors. That's why Louis and others use head-worn mics.

    Presumably the components which popped off the board were still inside of the iPad since it hadn't been opened. Weren't you able to find them and identify what they were? I must not have been clear-It was sent board in back housing and had Christy’s test screen on it when I began. The main point of the video is that it was not straightforward because we had no way to identify the missing components.

      @@JessaJonesh, ok, I'm with you now. Sorry, you probably did make that clear. I'm running on empty following a bad night with my babies! I totally agree with the argument for the right to repair. Apple's insistence that us actually PAYING for our phones doesn't mean we can do what we like with them is so ridiculous. If I've paid for a house I can decorate the interior any way I want. If I've bought a washing machine I can put whatever I want into the drum, so why when I've bought an iPhone am I not entitled to put a screwdriver or soldering iron inside it? I actually love Apple devices but I'm now using an Asus PC, a Huawei Honor 10 and a Huawei T1 tablet as I'm fed up of the Apple eco-system. Their desire to control their devices after they have left their hands is insane and their unwillingness to help out people who have actually bought goods from them is such a joke. All we really need is the right to repair bill to pass in one state, then Apple have 3 choices. Either stop selling in that state, sell a device with a state specific layout on the motherboard so the schematic only applies in that state or realise that people have the right to repair and release schematics worldwide.

    While I applaud the work you, Louis, and others have done wrt RtR legislation, I think companies like Apple can fairly easily counter it via firmware shenanigans, like they're in the process of implementing with the dreaded T2 chip in MacBooks. And all this is assuming the legislation isn't passed in a watered-down, toothless form.
    Apple isn't going to surrender their chokehold on the parts and schematics market without one helluva fight. And they will do everything legal AND illegal to further cement their position and protect what they consider to be their Holy Grail IPs. This isn't a David vs. Goliath situation, but a David vs. Thanos one.
    I think the day is fast approaching where anything beyond a quick ribbon or wire replacement won't be possible with new Apple products. Louis already can't source replacement MacBook displays because they don't come with the necessary EDID codes and was forced to resell the stock he had as useless oddities. And relying on donor parts is a very janky way to provide repair service.
    And now there are troubling signs that Samsung might be going down a similar route. If Android-based devices start mirroring their iOS counterparts wrt the lack of purchasable parts and overall serviceability, it'll be a dark day, indeed.

    Is a One microhenry inductor that important? Can you just jump it?

    • @CoolerQ
      @CoolerQ 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, very important. Jumping it would likely fry whatever is downstream. The power management chip is outputting a square wave, that's (say) 0V half of the time and 4V half of the time. It's the inductor's job to smooth that out into 2V all of the time. If the downstream component is something sensitive like the CPU, the 4V even for an instant could destroy it.

    I'm speaking totally as a none tech person here.
    Would it be possible, using one or more working units of each type of iPad, to create your own schematics?
    Now this may not be complete, but really, based on experience with what fails most, schematics of those areas.
    Even if it means, for instance, if a coil has no markings, indicate what it reads, then find comparable coils that read the same.
    I'm thinking the answer will be "no, it would take too long, be too expensive in terms of ripped apart devices, be unreliable if any guessing has to take place", but it's just a thought.

      @@christothegreat1 I'm no expert so if anyone like Jessa can chip in on the technicals, please do, but I know Apple products can be really weird about you not using licensed products, to the extent where your phone just won't accept them as existing in some cases. Might be some technical issue behind this or the firmware? No idea, someone else will def know. There's been lawsuits about it in the past, Apple will only allow certain products to be used, an unsurprisingly the only products they like are the ones that have to pay apple a subsid every time their product sells.
      Most androids, on the other hand, don't seem to give a shit what product you use. (Although I'd still be careful with the hella cheap shit anyway.)

    I worked in the consumer electronics trade for most of my life. Manufactures made their reputation on supplying circuit diagrams and components so their equipment could be repaired.
    I knew I could phone Sony (Just as an example ) would happily send me things I needed to repair their products. Equally if I wanted to repair an appliance from say Russel Hobbs or Kenwood I could buy them form a rep who might even carry the parts in his car. Yes the days of simple repairs has gone and it is our right to restore this omission from manufactures of today.
    One point I would also make was Sony used to carry spares or order them even if he product was discontinued.

    Thank you thank you thank you SO much for including the idea of sustainability!! I think it's really important to keep in mind the severe damage that is done to people and environment to win the necessary rare earths just so new devices can be produced at a whim. It sadly seems that modern society has become fond of "simply" disposing of things so they can get newer versions. Your car is no longer perfect after a few years? But a brand new one! You're bored of what your living room looks like? Just throw your perfectly fine furniture and decorations out in the trash and buy new stuff. You're annoyed by having to clean your kitty's dishes all the time? Just use paper plates and throw them away after every meal. Your contractual binding to your cell phone company is running out and your phone is two years old already? Good gracious, time to get the latest model! I'm seeing it time and again, and it really bothers me. This just can't be right. We're already ruining this world as best we can, and the ever growing throwaway society is contributing hugely. I'm a big supporter of the idea of sustainability and reusing things wherever possible, and so I'm very thankful you've stressed this idea so much in your video. Kudos to you!

    Most of the innovation from Apple seems to be inside the silicon for these products, these would not be represented on a schematic. So sharing a schematic should not cause a problem.
    Also you’ll probably find that a competitor can recreate most of the schematic through taking one apart and following where power flows, etc.

    32:33 there isn't an issue in any other country its just the U.S. having this issue with Apple. I think the U.S. are behind with the times. We have something called the ACCC, it is way in Australia and the EU that Apple are forced to provide a 2 year warranty on ALL there products in Australi as standard. Apple Care in Australia is a waste of money because we have these options. Right to repair at least in Australia isn't something that bothers us because if Apple do not provide a free repair or replacement the ACCC will force them to and the customer will always win.

      A $100,000 le croy oscilloscope is board replacement only....
      Very few manufacture would do a board repair... they would then have to warranty the entire board not just the repair... and test it to ensure it is completely working, it’s cheaper and less time to pick up a new board off the pick and place machine and install it...
      If she wants to repair a product with no information, she will have to buy a few, and use one for voltage and ohm reference , and use the other for component measurements with the part removed ...
      Even my $40,000 new price signal generator has NO schematics ...
      I got it for $100 and fixed it...

    Here's what pisses me off about this issue. If I buy a car, I can find parts and repair it or get a "third party" aka a mechanic, to fix it. Why? Because I bought it, I own it, it's my car to do what I want with. If I buy a fridge, I can get it repaired anyway I want. However If i spend 3k on a laptop (which in some cases is more expensive then the car or a fridge) apple gives the finger and says nope, we won't let you get it fixed, even though you own that device. This makes no sense other then Apple wants more money. This should be illegal, it has been in the car industry for decades. The whole argument about "computers are more sensitive blah blah" is bull. Cars now a days have computers built into them, they track where you've been and are going, but I can still fix them if I wanna buy the parts and do the labor my self. Why can't I fix my computer, or get someone who actually understands it more then the idiots at the genius bar? It's simply my money my product simple as that.

    As long as companies like Apple fight against Right to Repair; states should charge them at least 100% of their MSRP for the device OR for them to go into the landfills or for recycling costs. They would be sent a bill at the end of each quarter/year. They wouldn't be able to raise their rates because the fee would equally increase for them; and they would lose customers left and right; they would have no option but to capitulate.

  • @darkSorceror
    @darkSorceror 5 лет назад

    13:29 Even if the schematic was detailed enough to allow someone to reproduce an exact and functioning iPad copy, and they could program the chips with a functional OS and software, it would end up being FAR too expensive for anyone to bother with. To keep costs down, they'd have to do huge production runs, and be able to guarantee sales of 100% of the knock-off product.
    Schematics do not include internals of ICs, let alone programmable components. There is no logic to holding on to a schematic because someone would copy it, any more than there is for hiding the blueprints to your house so no one can build an identical one.

    • @Spamhard
      @Spamhard 5 лет назад

      This.
      Not to mention there's plenty of cheap knock offs of Apple products (and everything else), with or without the schematics available. If someone wants to cheaply copy it, they'll copy it, schematics have nothing to do with that.
