    Have you ever seen Crimson Tide with Gene Hackman and Diesel Washington?
    At the beginning of the movie Gene Hackman is the captain of a submarine and Diesel Washington is his new second in command, and they're just leaving harbor, still above the surface, and they're both standing on the bridge just outside the hatch, about to dive under for six months, and Hackman says to Washington "This is my favorite moment right here..." while looking out at the rising sun above the endless ocean, and Washington doesn't say a word.
    Hackman then turns to Hunter (Washington) and says "Bravo Hunter, your stock just went up a couple of points..." Washington turns to his captain and says "Sir?" to which he replies "You knew to keep your mouth shut... most eggheads just want to talk it away." before turning to another hand, and ordering the ship under.

    Okay, I wasn't gonna do this but then you found the conch.
    So, you start by waking up on a beach on an island with no clue how you got there or where there is, and as you travel around it you collect musical instruments? If the game doesn't conclude with a giant egg containing the 'airwhale' who is neither whale nor air, I admit I'll be disappointed.

    I hate games that take controll from you for upwards of *10 seconds* just to point the camera towards something and say “look at me, aren’t I pretty?” That, along with the fact that the puzzles are just a variation of _Go Here - Press the shout button, Go there - Push a box_ killed my interest in the game before I even played half an hour of it.
    That being said, I did get the game for free from a GOG sale, so I can’t complain too much, and it was nice seeing Jon play trough it and having a relaxing time.

    I’m both fond and not fond of this game, because it’s a bait and switch. If I had known that it was a game about [SPOILER REDACTED] from the start, I would have been fine with it. But I thought it was a fun adventure game like Jon thinks it is in this video, when that’s only the first of five stages. It gets dark and allegorical later, and I wasn’t prepared for that, and I sort of resent it for pulling that. That said, I would love to see Jon finish this game for us.

    Played this through about three months ago. It's a cool game, if a bit dull and repetitive. It really could have used some spoken or written story to break up the pace. I'm NOT asking for cutscenes or long monologues, but give us _something_ to grab on. This game is too long for its story to be told entirely with visuals.
    Admittedly, that puzzle in 46:10 was one of my biggest "holy shit" moments in gaming.

    Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and lots of games have this exact same art style so some people obviously like it but I'm not a fan. Bland and boring with no detail or life.

  • @AnonEyeMouse
    @AnonEyeMouse 6 лет назад +13

    I hate this graphical style. It was worse in Firewatch. At least it is smooth thanks to denuvo being taken out.

    • @ConnorEllisMusic
      @ConnorEllisMusic 6 лет назад +7

      As a person who loves low poly art and develops games using said style, I would like to know why you don't like low poly? It would be very interesting.

    • @5Andysalive
      @5Andysalive 6 лет назад +2

      What's the deal about Denuvo? I absolutely don't get it. I remember REALLY nasty and anno yingcopy-protection systems Think AC2. They were an absolute pain in the ass. Denuovo is unnoticable so it's FINE.
      That is one of these typical madeup bullshit shitstorms with no shit and hardly any wind.
      And Firewatch was great. Including the end. And smooth. Whatever that means. It didn't have exactly a challenging graphics engine.

    • @AnonEyeMouse
      @AnonEyeMouse 6 лет назад +5

      SquaredSpekz Lack of detail, mainly. Also, there is a degree of 'sameyness' between, say, Rime and Journey and a few others I've seen (but can't bring names to mind) that makes me think there is a formula at work, simple graphics, chill out music, no dialogue and simplistic platforming related puzzles that hides a lack of story and tale telling. Obviously that is a larger thing than just the graphical style, but it's a style that is an integral part of the formula.
      I guess using a low poly, minimalist style also makes each example look a lot like the next example, and the next...
      Also, the experience of playing with objects that resemble origami just reminds me I'm playing with hollow constructs... which takes me out of the immersion. The more extreme the low poly model, the worse it becomes.
      I apologise for being a little imprecise, I've not had to pin this down in actual words before. It's a very visceral dislike and though I accept that people like Jon are being honest when they call it beautiful, I am at a loss to see it. To my eye, looking at this is like looking at poorly cut pieces of card. I find photorealism, or detail orientated art much more engaging. Textures, bump maps etc that trick your head into almost feeling the surface on an object.
      I may be getting a bit over stated, but I hope you get the idea.

    • @JoshIsMerry
      @JoshIsMerry 6 лет назад +5

      AnonEyeMouse that's quite interesting, if I could ask, do you feel similarly about more detailed but highly stylised games, e.g. Dishonoured? When I look at these styles of games I'm used to using my imagination to fill in all the details without thinking about it, letting me focus on what's really important as it'll be the only thing with any detail, but I would imagine if you have more brain space than me for taking in detail and thinking about the little things and working stuff out how it could look like just a not very good representation of things in the game world

    • @AnonEyeMouse
      @AnonEyeMouse 6 лет назад +2

      Joshua Merrick I enjoyed dishonoured and most of the graphics I enjoyed. The character models, especially the males with oversized hands and cartoonish faces I didn't like as much. The buildings and streets were impressive to me. I guess it very well could be that I need a lot of detail to fill up the visual part of my brain. I don't know, it sounds like a fun explanation.
