Lyrics:
It's been a long time since you've seen her
Could have been three years or more.
Will she be waiting when we dock, boys
Or like others will she be gone?
It's one more pull boys, that'll do boys
Soon we'll draw alongside.
Hoist her upwards boys, swing her inboard
For the journey's nearly done.
Well you're looking mighty smart, boy
Dressed up in your number ones
You've scrounged a new blade from the purser
To take the bum-fluff from off your chin.
When we've fixed those bow and stern lines
And you've scuttled down the gangway
If she's waiting there, just kiss her
Turn around, give us a smile.
Well, we too will go ashore soon
(Get drunk in the clubs and bars,)
Then stagger homeward, pockets empty
Like so many nights before.
Well a man may take a wife, boy
And a man may take a mistress,
But a sailor has his ship, boys
And his mistress it is the sea.
For the journey now is done.

Ive been out of the Navy longer than I was in, and my ship has since been decommissioned and sunk. But there is still saltwater in my blood. I know this because this song sends it pouring down my cheek.
Powerfully stated. ✊️
This is such a beautiful song
This is the best song to get ready for a date.
*second or third date. Gets the mood just right
I sang this at the top of my lungs on the last day of my first season fishing in the bering sea. It was lightly raining, the ocean was light and not frothy. I played it on the ships speakers and teared up a little while I sang on the bow. The captain was driving up in to have the boat lifted to land.
I don’t have any connection to the navy, sailing, or anything nautical in any way but this song is amazing.
Whoever the tenor is singing the high part in the end gives me chills every time. Just damn good!
That's most likely Jonny Stewart from The Wellermen. If not him, probably Robbie Sattin from TLJ. Both have beautiful voices anyway, but Jonny seems to be able to go to higher pitches.
It's almost certainly either Robbie or Sam Pope.
Woe!! Just WOW!! Voices like these can't be found in the "new music"!!! All these recordings by "The Wellermen" should be put on CDs, so they can be taken along, and played on the car/truck system!!
god do I love this song
Brings me right back to standing along the rail in my cracker jacks, waiting to work one of the aft spring lines.
Your harmonies give me chills. Well done!
So gd good. Absolutely unbelievable. ✊️
I have listened to this so many times. Each time I imagine this being sung for a young sailor who is being buried at sea. There's a romanticized sadness of young man (with bum fluff in his chin) who was claimed by the fury of the sea, never to return to a young maiden who may not even be waiting at port. A beautiful song performed in spectacular fashion. Well done, lads.
The first sound for me this morning. A lovely start. ❤🎶🎵
Chills absolute chills! Love you all
This is such a great tune..
I may just be too emotional at the moment but I want this to play at my funeral
My brother had a dream about this song. He sang it at my wedding with nothing but raw passion
I consider you guys the best for these songs.
Beautiful song
The longest Johns being great as always!
That is fantastic work, well done boys
Very nice!!
There is a voice above most others, so clear , it carries me through the whole song . I don't know who it is , but I find myself focusing on that very voice. Most noticable in " soon" , "draw " etc - not in the first half but getting louderund in the second halfs chorus . It's not as noticable in the 1 st chorus as in the 2 nd and especially the 3 rd ! Like a counterweight that makes it this relieving, light experience of coming home.
It has to be one of the 2 voices from the 3 rd or 4 th verse if I counted right.
I always get so lost and fotget to count.
One of my most cherished songs.
Sounds to me like you're referring to Sam Pope. I think he comes in in the background of the 2nd verse (and maybe the 4th), and is the main voice for the 3rd. I could be wrong though, since I don't know the voices of the guys from The Longest Johns very well.
@@mountainrapids I believe it's either Sam (very clear tenor in the background) or Andy from The Longest Johns as the main tenor there and the one I can hear the most. It could help to watch the older video of this song where there are all of them as they sing.
Yeah the highest voice in the song is Sam Pope for sure.
Thank you all ! I will try to find each of them in a song where they are in a similar "position" or sing alone and figure out who it is. It can only be one of two voices, but it's difficult for me to hear it clearly with all the subharmonies. I have no absolute or relative pitch, but I am good at recognizing voices, maybe that helps a bit. I don't even know why I am suddenly so obsessed with finding out who's voice it is. I guess it's another OCD thing.
Thank you all for your input!
I think I 'll be gone for 2 to 4 weeks ( life is too $#itty like never before anyways ) , so I'll bury myself , deep, deeper and even deeper down in another rabbithole, from who it is, to their range, to what all these ranges are called and what they sound like, back to school and learning how to read complex sheets and identify rhythms on the spot again... ^^
@@janedoex1398 Well then be sure to tell us what you found. I'd like to know what you meant and if we were correct in our answers.
