- here are the timestamps for each section, for those who wanted me to split this up into separate videos. I apologize that I asked for feedback and then didn't end up going with the majority-it wasn't until I divided the books into piles and began filming that I realized it would just feel less chaotic to have an entire speculative/SFF episode.

A note about The Lost Apothecary, I wouldn’t go into it expecting fantasy. The ‘fantasy’ element is literally so background it can easily be missed. I disliked the book and think I would have disliked it even more if I was expecting it to be fantasy. But if you read it I hope you like it.
It was one of my least favorites from last year. I wish a thriller or horror author could rewrite it 😅
I was coming here to say the same thing! It’s definitely 99.9% historical fiction
I agree, such a disappointment in general & also not fantasy 🙈
/: least favorite from 2021
Agreed. It's Bailey Sarian's aquatofana video, but less entertaining.
I would've never in my life expected you to pull out a Sanderson book.
Haha I bought it maybe a year ago for a specific video but now I can't even remember what it was, maybe "reading your recommendations" episode 3? I don't even think I've hauled it hahaha
I haven’t got to that part, yet - but whaaaaaat? 😱 Totally unexpected
"I need to get rid of that book...but I don't want to." -Kayla, but also me every day of my life 😂
The Institute is actually one of the best newer Stephen King books. I recommend it to my friends and to customers at work all the time and I've only heard good things back from all of them. It is actually one of my favorite Stephen King books 😄 I also remember really liking Sleeping Beauties but it has been so long since I read it I'm not sure if I remember all of it correctly. I like the biggest twist in it but I understand the people who hate it 😅
As many people have probably already said, The Lost Apothecary is not fantasy. It is one of the dullest books I have ever read though, where nothing happens and the little that does happen wouldn't have happened if someone had told X about Y.
The Institute was such a fun read, and very reminiscent of his 80’s books with the kid main characters and people with powers
I really liked all Systems Red, the series gets better as it goes on.
It’s a great series!
I’m so excited to read these.
Anything AI I’m here for.
Love this series! One of my favorites!
Is anyone able to point me to where to buy the rest of the series without a second mortgage? These are TINY books and I can only find them for like $15 each or something.
@@TerminalThiccness they're on Libby for free from most libraries read by Kevin R Freed.
I actually liked The Lost Apothecary, but I listened to the audio book instead of actually reading it, so that might make a difference. I wouldn’t say it’s fantasy, it’s more of a character driven story and seeing how these women from different timelines connect on certain levels.
The institute was amazing. I’m not into magical kids AT ALL but it was amazing. I like it. Audiobook was 10/10
Loved Stephen King's The Institute! I also don't typically like reading about children, but this was done really well. I think it helps that the main character is quite an old soul and is incredibly bright.
All Systems Red was fantastic. I don't really love space-y sci-fi, but I adore both the Murderbot series and Murderbot themselves as a character. There is always a mystery, some cinematic action, touching drama about the power of found family, and laugh-out-loud humor. I hope you read it and love it too.
The queen has blessed us again, goodreads app at the ready to put all of these on my tbr
I picked up Black Water Sister last year on the basis of your "upcoming books" series and I absolutely loved it, it is light fantasy set in reality so I think you would really like it!
I second this recommendation. I really enjoyed the setting and the characters in Black Water Sister.
I also picked it up based on that video, and I loved it too. It ended up being one of my favorite books I read last year!
The Summer That Melted Everything is one of my favorite books. I think you'd love it. Plus the audiobook is amazing.
T. Kingfisher's horror are my absolute favorites. I'm sooo looking forward to her new release this year!!
172 Hours on the Moon is the first book I ever read that FREAKED me out. I read it as a teen and it started my love for the occasional horror.
I read 172 Hours on the Moon around 10 years ago, and it still affects me to this day. It might be a bit juvenile as it's YA but it's really good. And it's Norwegian translated literature, if that's something you're interested in too.
The summer that melted everything is still one of the best books I’ve ever read in my life!
I am SO excited for you to read Skyward. I've given very few books five stars but that one was a five star for me!
Same! Can't wait for Kayla's thoughts!
I love Brandon Sanderson in general. Skyward is awesome!
I read 172 Hours on the Moon a few years ago as a 28 year old and it gave me nightmares…but I am not an experienced horror reader and I also am a bit of a chicken 😅 I really enjoyed the story and the twist was great
I read 172 hours on the moon soo long ago, but I remember it creeped me the f out and I loved it! I don’t think Kayla will love it, but I would still love for her to read it and prove me wrong.
Same! I still think about it. It was so gripping and terrifying
I read 172 Hours on the Moon as an adult years after the hype for the book and I thought it was terrible. I remember the characters being super bland and I thought that the pacing was awful and it never got creepy enough. I rarely give books 1 star but it was a definite 1 star from me.
Same! I read it because of the hype and was so disappointed. There's also so many plotholes 😬
I’ve been waiting to see all the horror books on your tbr 👀
The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina was one of my faves last year
I love reading horror sci fi books it's a wonderful way to escape the stress of navigating life as an adult.
i actually liked obsidio better than illuminae. great end to a series for sure!
Obsidio took me longer to get through but it was SO worth it! Brings the whole series together and things you may not have realized from the first two become clearer here. And it’s funny! I picked up this series because of you, having never read any Sci-Fi before, wanted to take a chance. But I give the series 5 stars and then bought a ton more sci-fi 😆 You have to read the novella, Memento, too!
All systems red (Murderbot diaries) is so good and easy to read, highly recommend!
A darker shade of magic is a lot more magic than you normally read but I loved it. Four different London's and you can travel through to each one
oh Fever Dream is amazing!! i read it in one sitting, you are going to love it is that type weird story that wants you to try and get a head, it wants you to speculate and leaves you with an insecurity, a insatiable curiosity throughout the whole story. very good.
I enjoyed Dead Silence. I've read horror that does a similar thing and does it better but it was a perfectly enjoyable read but I wish the fantastical element had been a bit more fleshed out
Read the twisted ones PLEASE very similar to the hollow place in a lot of ways with like honestly too similar of a premise and character dynamics for some people but it totally worked for me. And it was truly terrifying at times in a way that I don’t often feel when reading.
I loved the twisted ones, it gets under your skin especially the little song that is in it.
Would love to see a video focusing on great novellas!! All genres would be great because they are so short.
I loved Satellite by Nick Lake!!! It was so intriguing and is probably a good amount of weird to peak your interest. Its a boy and these twins who were born in space and their moms are astronauts. They then move to earth at 16 to medically see how that would affect them, but its also a story about his relationship to his mother, generally curiosity and discovery, as well as friendships, love, and grief.
I loveddddd the institute one of my all time favorites. And sleeping beauties was awesome too like I think you'll love it
The Water Dancer has magical realism vibes for sure - a fantastic book.
The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina was amazing.
Black Water Sister was such a surprising book for me, the Gran was a lot more... vicious? than I'd expected and it's one of my favourite reads of the year!
The Calculating Stars is so dang good. The author is also an audiobook narrator and she narrates it herself, 10/10 would recommend. :)
Your synopsis for Skyward... The best! 😄 And these videos help me to discover new books so thank you, Kayla. 😁
omg I haven't heard people talk about so many of these books for so long so it's super refreshing to see this video! I need to get to some of these as well!
wink poppy midnight is kind of a thriller honestly, very much in the vein of stephanie kuehn! very underrated in my opinion!
i've also never been interested in sanderson (and i'm not actually that in to sci fi at all) but i was extremely pleasantly surprised by Skyward! It's more about a vague war than a game per se, but Spensa is really competitive in general.
I'm Argentinian and honestly, I'm pleasantly surprised by the amount of books related to Argentina that are featured on this video 😆
Yessss I have just enough time to watch this before work!
Just about to comment this!
I would try out the audiobook for The Institute ! I didn't think it would be for me either, and I think I would have DNFed if I was reading it physically. It gets a bit repetitive, but it held my interest, and I think has a more "realistic" ending.
As a Sanderson stan, I think that you’ll probably really like skyward, it’s definitely not set on earth but might as well be? And also it’s incredibly train-y. But I think that you would absolutely hate the next ones, particularly the third one that just came out. 😅🤷♂️
i am so excited to pick up obsidio! loved illuminae and gemina
I need to read the last one. My fav character is AIDAN. I need to know what it comes up with in the third book (and fourth novella).
Hollow kingdom was an awesome read. I’m excited to read the sequel
Seconded, such a great book!!
Obsidio looks really interesting and I have added that to my TBR. Skyward is also on my TBR. Sanderson has always been a great read in my experience.
The Rules of Magic is the story of the aunts in Practical Magic. It takes place in the 60s in New York City when the aunts are young, and I adored it, particularly because the aunts were my favorite characters. It's a very character-driven, realistic/low fantasy story. A Darker Shade of Magic is super fun and one of the best YA fantasy books I've read. But it is a pretty fantastical adventure story.
The Trickster series is one of the best series I've ever read. I adore it so much. The main character, Jared, is amazing.
So interesting that you classified Early Departures in this category. I guess it’s kind of like Adam Silvera’s They Both Die at the End, where it’s a contemporary story with fantastical (or alternate technological) elements. Early Departures is so good but so emotional. Kind of like Adam Silvera books coincidentally lol. I love seeing all of your tbr books. The closet is always unseen so it’s cool to see the books that live there. Hope you’re doing well Kayla.
Oh, hey, it’s all my favorite genres! My favorite of your list that I’ve read is All Systems Red. In fact, that series my favorite series I’ve read in the last 10 years. I don’t think I quite have a grasp on your reading tastes. We read different things in the same genres. But All Systems Red is a quick read, so it’s not much of a time commitment.
This is such a weird coincidence, but I literally read (and loved) Skyward last week, and I was watching your vlog earlier and thinking that you would probably love it. I was keeping it in my mind to recommend for next time you talk about Space Sci-fi or ask for recommendations.
Also, Noughts & Crosses is one of my favourite series from my childhood! It's not fantasy, I think the closet correct genre would be dystopian but it more of a social commentary book about race relations, and also a romance.
love seeing Tell Me I'm Worthless on your TBR - but I wanted to say, I would definitely recommend reading a couple reviews before starting it. it's A Lot (in a good way) and very, very British and I would definitely argue that it's better to NOT go in blind.
one book I think you'll really love, though, is Fever Dream! that one is definitely better to jump into knowing nothing. excited for whenever you get around to it!!
Skyward is legitimately so good. Since you liked other scifi stuff like Illuminae, I think there's a chance you'll love it. Also I really hope that you finish The Remnant Chronicles, the ending was overall pretty satisfying, but there were elements that I personally didn't love. I just want to hear your thoughts on it though.
definitley recommend 172 hours on the moon the ending was not expected that's all i'm going to say!!!! rlly good book
Not me being so exited to watch this one and find out your thoughts on some of these bc they sound so cool!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Here’s my take on The Institute. I LOVED it, I think if someone has read a lot of books with a similar premise they might not, but I haven’t. When you start the book it’s confusing, you feel like you’re reading the wrong book, you’re not. But that first character ended up to be one of my favorites, as well as a character named Annie, I can completely picture her on screen. If they adapt that book she HAS to be included!
A Madness so Discreet looks really interesting. I’m really into that type of premise, and learning more about it, but that book even adds a mystery?!?! Awesome. Mad Womens Ball is a book with a similar topic, hard to say I loved it because it’s heartbreaking, but it’s a short fast read and is set during the same time. Those women deserved so much more.
I absolutely loved Klara and then sun, and I think you will like it as well :) you could do a video with books about AI, and then also read Machines like me by Ian McEwan
Black Leopard Red Wolf is so good. It takes awhile to get used to the writing, but in my opinion it's so worth it to stick with it. There's a sequel out now that I'm excited to read.
Great video series! 🙂
I really want you to read All systems red, very excited to see what you think.
Haven't heard anyone talk about Strange exit. I got an ARC from Netgalley and it was so good! Really loved it!
I really enjoyed The institute, was pretty good. I think you will like it, because it is SK.
(i still really want you to read adult high fantasy, because you loved dune. maybe the poppy war?)
I had never been interested in Sanderson either but I read the Skyward series over the last few months and it's a new favourite of mine!
I read fever dream a few years ago and loved it. I am not one for rereads but really want to pick this one up again.
Skyward is so good - and Hollow Kingdom is one of my favorite books of all time. I can’t wait to see when you read them.
The Age of Miracles, Sharks in the Time of Saviors, Twelve Nights at Rotter House, and Tell Me I’m Worthless have all been on my TBR for a min! This gets me excited to pick em up soon. And add on The Twisted Ones :)
I definitely recommend picking House Of Salt and Sorrows, it’s fantasy but really easy to get into
You should do a video where you read the books that have been on your tbr shelf for the longest
Popisho is great and I’m sure the audiobook would be amazing!
spellbook of the lost and found is SO good, it's one of my favourite books, and it's also queer in case you didn't know!
I read 172 Hours in my late 20’s and hated it. I read a ton of mysteries/thrillers and I predicted the plot twist within the first like forth of the book and the rest of the book wasn’t good enough to make the journey to that plot twist still enjoyable. It also was such an impossible situation that it needed writing that could make you put that aside, but it didn’t have that. Also, its been years so I don’t remember specifics, but I remember it driving me crazy that the science was not even close, tho I am an astrophysics nerd, so that probably doesn’t bother other people. I was bummed about it since I love scifi and mystery/thrillers. Basically, I have no doubt some people like it, but I don’t think you will.
spellbook of the lost and found is something you'll really like! it's got a strong friend group, dual timelines of the past and present, and just a little hint of magic. :)
Can't wait to see you read All Systems Red, it's so good
Skyward was a lot of fun. I ended up giving both it and its sequel 5 stars, but I was so disappointed with the third book which I gave 1 or 2 stars to. I'm definitely not continuing with the series. I hope you have better luck with it than I did. :) Also, All Systems Red is absolutely incredible!!
You should definitely read Obsidio since you liked the other books. Not a spoiler, but it takes place back on the planet where Illuminae started. There is also a novella you can get on ebook called Memento that takes place before Illuminae. It’s about AIDAN, which was my favorite part of Illuminae.
I loved Age of Miracles!! I think it’s totally your vibe
Also it’s always shelved in Adult Fiction (if that sways you!)
21:51 "I don't really remember, I need to get rid of that book... but I don't want to." You've just explained my life in a nutshell.
I’d love to see you read The Rules Of Magic just because I see a bunch of booktubers haul Alice Hoffman books but never read them. Rules of Magic is technically book two in the series but Alice did not write them in order (3, 2, 1, 4). I love Alice Hoffman’s writing because it’s very imaginative and visual. I’ve read 4 of her books so far but haven’t started the Magic series.
172 hours was fantastic 😍, I read it in my mid 20s and still loved it
I am loving this series!
'All Systems Red' is a ton of fun and super-quick. If you've read 'Firestarter', the easiest way to describe 'The Institute' is, "What if Charlie got caught?". 'Kill Creek' plays some nifty tricks with haunted house tropes, but uneven characterization and the occasional stereotype hobble it a bit.
I absolutely loved Come With Me, Horrorstor, and Dead Silence.
I've actually read quite a few of the horror ones: Quite enjoyed Pearl (surprisingly effective being about a mind-control pig), Sundial I also enjoyed, but I can see it being polarizing (story did not go where I expected), Kill Creek is solid, let down by Dead Silence (it's basically movies Event Horizon + Ghost Ship but not as cohesive) and Horrostor.
yesssss please read 172 hours on the moon!! Somehow I thought you had already? but yeah I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts on that. It is set in space for a portion of it though, but thats not the whole book. Admittedly it's been a few years, but to my middle school self it was very creepy , lol.
I loved the Inheritance of Orquidea Divina! 🥰
Must read The Calculating Stars and the whole Lady Astronaut series. It’s awesome!!! Sci fi, mystery, alternative history.
I hope you enjoy The Calculating Stars. It is my favorite sci-fi series. The first book is basically only space training and getting ready for space. If I remember correctly that has been one of your favorite things?
I also love Murderbot!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on black leopard red wolf. I know a lot of fantasy booktubers who read it and thought it was too weird so I’m wondering if it will fit more into your taste. I love weird things and high fantasy so I’m hoping I love it
I just couldn't with all the references to um fluids.
adaptation is SO GOOD. It's fun, mid 2010s YA but its QUEER and POLYAMOROUS and has MIND LINKs. It's amazing. I love malinda lo so much.
Omg The Water Dancer!! It's so good.
Ok so The Minders… I really enjoyed it but I think that’s mostly because a large portion of it is set where I live and it’s always exciting to read novels set in locations you know. However… it’s not his best book, but please don’t write John Marrs off. Give What Lies Between Us a chance… I think you’ll really enjoy it. Also The Good Samaritan is amazing. X
I didn't like the writing in The Calculating Stars but I think you'd like the plot and characters.
The Minders is like a continuation of some people's lives that had used the technology in The One (and are living in the time of The Passengers). I liked it. It was a crazy ride. Atmospheric in that it felt dark a lot of the time.
Mirrorland is really good. It's like gothic thriller.
I was meh on The Institute and I'm a huge King fan.
Kill Creek is SO GOOD!!!!
I feel like there are so many books about twins! You should do a secret tbr with all books about twins during Gemini season 😅
Noughts and Crosses is so good!
I would love to see you try the Murderbot diaries! (All Systems Red) I don’t usually like sci-fi but I have really enjoyed this series, mainly because it’s funny as hell. Murderbot is sarcastic and swears a lot and is exceedingly misanthropic, and it’s excellent
The Lost Apothecary was a huge miss for me and definitely don’t expect big fantasy vibes. I love Sanderson and agree most of his stuff wouldn’t be up your alley, but Skyward actually might since you love space stuff. Each of the books in that series just keep expanding and expanding the world which I think is very cool
I've read Manhunt and it was amazing! lots of very intense scenes and I never knew where it was going, plus super memorable characters!
Horrorstor is super fun on audio!
In my opinion horrorstor, my best friends exorcism, and we sold our souls are grady hendrix's best work and you would probably enjoy those more than the other two that you've read. Horrorstor is a lot of fun.
There are so many books here that I've read, and not a single one I think you would actually like. The Twisted Ones is the closest. How To Stop Time is one of my favs, but it is more of the Matt Haig thing.
i LOVE spellbook of the lost of found. i love all her books
