1985: still amazing after all these years. The video was far ahead of its time, and Godley and Creme, with Trevor Horn producing, made a record that still stands the test of time.
I remember driving on a gray, rainy summer day and this song came on, almost perfectly to the rhythm of the windshield wipers. I've never forgotten that.
@seanpratchler1888 --That's a great story, and I can relate because something similar happened to me. I was once stopped at a railroad crossing, with Tom Petty's _American Girl_ playing on the radio. The crossing's lights and bell were were exactly in sync with the song's refrain. And I mean exactly. I couldn't but laugh out loud, and because I was alone in the car, it must have made a weird site to the other drivers alongside. I didn't care, it was a great moment.

Brings back happy memories. I remember in the 80's when I would go over to my girlfriend's house after work on Fridays. We would snuggle on the couch and watch Miami Vice. This is one of the songs they played. Time marches on...we later got married and Miami Vice was canceled. Jump ahead 3 kids and 22 years later and she left me for a doctor. I sure do miss Miami Vice...makes me want to cry!
I am so sorry this happened to you. I got dumped in September of '85 by a gal that lived 3 houses from me. I still think about her but things worked out for the best as I met a lady in August of '88 and we got married September of '90. We are still together 32 years later. Music and memories go together!
This is one of the most underrated songs and music videos in history. The music is perfect, the lyrics are simple and make the point without being too wordy. A gem of simplicity. The music, the mix, wow, really, every time I hear it I get goosebumps!!! And as for the video, is just a masterpiece, it is an amazing piece of art, you have that the technology to morph didn't exist at the time, these are simple and basic wipe effects done with video that was capture on "tape". That's right, the material no matter how good the camera, and lenses were was put into a tape, no digital stuff. It is just amazing, thaks Goodley and Creme!!!!
My dad borrowed my car a while back and left his 80s nu-wave mix CD in the stereo for me to listen to. He told me to check out this one at the end and said it was on an episode of Miami Vice. The first time I listened to this song all the way through, I got chills. This is one of the most gorgeous songs I’ve ever heard - I can’t believe I haven’t heard it on any of the big 80s radio stations or Spotify playlists! Was it this underrated back then, too?
On the strength of the song and the video, I bought the LP; god only knows what landfill it's in now, along with the rest of my LPs, and that's Shame On Me.
My daughter just heard this song in a grocery store in Carnation, WASHINGTON !!!!!! She called to tell me , but I couldn't find it on RUclips , so between her and her husband they got "Godley& Creme-cry . I just watched it 6 times .GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you ever had a broken heart watch this. You're not the only one who feels pain. It means you are human. This is why it is so horrible for humans to compete with one another. It leads to a deadening of compassion. Thank you Godley & Creme.

I was listening to XM 80s Driving when I heard this song. My jaw dropped. I Loved this song. I scrambled to see the title so I could play it over and over again. I loved the 80s. Merry Christmas.
The members of 10cc will be remembered for a lot of the music they made. But I wonder if 'I'm Not In Love' and 'Cry' are the most significant. The production, writing, sound and emotional impact of both songs are all top tier.
They were masters at making genuinely experimental and daring songs that retain pop sensibilities at their core. Two brilliant recordings, ahead of their time.
It's a bit evocative of I'm Not In Love, in that it's got a very pared-down rhythmic backing track, and the emotional vocal out front is everything. It's a great song. I have to say though that I'm Not In Love is a masterpiece, particularly for its time.
That's right. Once graham Gould and Eric Stewart who founded the band started to impose thier songwriting commerciality on the band. Eric Stewart took control from then on. The og band was over. Godley and creme were heading in a different direction. The last song that Godley and recorded with 10 cc was never let it slip away. Godley didn't like the song due commercial nature. There is a terrific documentary about the band. Eric Stewart was in total control to the point where he ruled out Godley and cremes participation in future reunion. And he hires musicians who are friends of his. Godley said that he didn't know about the reunion and wasn't told about. The band tours without either of them. It was in a MiamiVice episode. That’s where I first heard it back when it first aired. One of the songs that got me through one of the lowest points of my life. So many people disappointed me. So many let me down. At the end of it all it was all up to a 19-year-old by herself 400 miles away from home. She survived only to find other horrors to come into her life later down the road…She survived them too. She cried a lot and listened to this song over and over and over and over and over….
I had forgotten about this song! I was on a long drive home and was listening to one of my favorite channels on Sirius: 80's. This tune came on, and the wave of bittersweet memories of childhood, love, and addiction to music had rushed through me. The experience brought back to a fleeting state of mind with no worries. I'm so glad that I was reunited with this tune!

Romantic? It's exactly the opposite. It's about heartache, pain, and long suffering. Doesn't make it any less beautiful, though...probably even more so.
@@rikk319 No, it’s utterly romantic. You’re missing it if you think this is analytical. Heartache, pain and suffering is the major ingredient surrounding romanticism. Get it together ffs.
@@PS987654321PS Watching the man who bookends the video crying, and multiple other people showing varying degrees of negative emotions--hopelessness, worry, exasperation, and even rage. This is as much romance as "Every Breath You Take" is romantic. Sting has mentioned multiple times that the Police song is about a stalker...but it doesn't stop people from playing it at their wedding reception. FFS--the title of the song is "Cry", not "Romance". Sure, people can do what they want...but it doesn't change the original intent of the artists.
@@rikk319 Don’t confuse the video with the song. Also, it’s a mistake to conflate this song, or any other “romantic” song with Every Breath you Take. They are different songs. Also, romance is not all happiness, joy, positivity, hope, sentiment. For many, the notion of the romantic is fatalistic which is probably closer to the human condition and human experience. It no doubt though will differ from person the person and culture to culture.
The music is haunting and perfectly matched with the stirring vocals. Reminds me of Roy Orbison and Chris Isaac....if these two artists' works were mixed together by IA it would sound like this!!
Many (including VH1's "Pop-Up Video") wrongly believe this brilliant video to be an early example of computer morphing, but the effects are achieved solely with skillful use of traditional lap dissolves and optical wipes.
Take me back to a great time where friends and family were fully together. And to tell our happiness and triumphs, and to despair without telling a cell phone or doing a web search
You struck a chord with me. The last time my family was fully intact was in 1981, just shortly before we lost my dad to a motorcycle crash. We were able to continue, of course; we had to. And there are good memories from that time (my college days, my brothers and sister still liking me, my mother not hit by Altzheimer's yet). I can look back and think; "my god, we were all so damn young".
This song is a monument. Simple, effective, dramatic yet restrained, minimal yet so grandiose and brimming with presence, emotionally evocative, flawlessly produced and recorded. Just a statuesque recording that towers over so many of their peers. Not only the best single of the 80s but surely one of the greatest of all time. Lightning in a bottle kind of record that could come out today and still sound timeless. I’m always so struck by the sense of physical space and atmosphere that bassline portrays. It’s huge.
The power of song to take you back to a special place and time...The fall of 1985, senior year of high school, all the friends I made that year and all the memories of a carefree youth...I miss it so much it really does make me wanna cry!😢
I haven't heard this song since I was a teenager. I decided to look it up and low and behold it's posted by the channel Starck Club Music. I live in Dallas and know the filmographer of the documentary. He invited me to one of the showings. I even played a gig there towards the end of the club being open to the public. It wasn't a club night , it was rented out by another promoter but i got to dj at the Starck club. How cool is that? The universe has jokes. 😊 Brilliant song. And even more brillaint video.
80's Memory Triggered.. Sitting around any one of our parents living room after school watching this on MTV with a group of friends before Mom and Dad got home from work 😊 Latchkey kids!!
I'm from the MTV generation. We were fortunate to witness MTV change music history. For me, there was one video that stood above the rest, Godley and Creme, Cry. On MTV, everything was moving, moving very fast. From Michael Jackson's, Thriller, to Peter Gabriel's, Sledge Hammer, to Madonna grabbing her crotch in, Express Yourself, sometimes I would get a headache turn the TV off. Too much visual noise. When I first saw, Cry, I froze. I could not move. I was speechless. It was melancholy and slow and the morphing of faces was something never seen before, literally. It was revolutionary. It was a full five years after Cry that Sinead O'Connor hit hard with her similar, Nothing Compares to You. Unfortunately, things that are bombastic and make the loudest noise are the most remembered and Cry's focused, inward look at sadness and loss is mostly forgotten. Also, the digitized video you see on RUclips and elsewhere is only a facsimile of what this video was like on a CRT TV back in 1985. The blacks were deep. The greys were silvery. Here, the highlights are blown out. Also, the transitions were seamless and smooth like butter, and don't discount the quality of audio in 1985. Many people had their TVs hooked up to kick-ass stereos. Godley and Creme's Cry was powerful. Like every other MTV video and many great films and TV shows of the past, this video proved to be ephemeral. What we see here is a ghost of what was. Still, I bow.
What a Song this is! I heard it for the first time one hour ago. My God i were in the Grocerystore. My Brain was shot down. I did leave the Store. Holy makaroni. Nothing beat the eighties. Godley& Creme were the 10cc? I’ve heard this song ten times in a row now.
G&C captured lightning in a bottle with this song. 1985: MUCH better time. MUCH better music. It still holds up today. And those vocals are banging. #WORD
Absolutely timeless and beautiful song. And I love that Trevor Horn has a spot at the very end. I was 12 or so when I first saw this, although it's the 10CC song "I'm not in Love" that brings me back to this treasure.

I love it even more today.
This song is just magic
MTV was so much fun and exciting back in 84-85-86 you couldnt wait for the new weird videos to come out📺📡🎶
Back when MTV actually played music. Now it's just trash.
The first time I heard this was on Miami Vice. Episode was " Definitely Miami". I'll never forget this song.
Great tune! The video is WAY ahead of its time.
I remember seeing it on MTV in the middle eighties. Two of the four guys that made up 10cc. Gotta love this video! It’s ingenious to say the least -
There is no song that can come close to this it's so unique and special
Classic song now in 2024.God,1985......39 years ago.No Biggie!
Incredibly simple but profound and powerful. I get chills with this video.
Another great Trevor Horn production.
luv his cameo at the end LOL
I had forgotten this song existed. So glad I stumbled on it again.
One of the best from the eighties. Lot's of great memories.
Butt-Head: He's faking it.
Beavis: Yeah he's not really taking a dump
Beavis: Well I'm glad that's over. AHHHHHH!
Butt-head: Now it's over. UHHHHHHH!
I'm stunned every time I hear this song...such talent
Hauntingly beautiful ❤️
This Has been a Timeless Favorite sience GTA 4 First song on LRR Station.. ❤️ back in 2012
Miami Vice kid....80s hurts so good music🌹🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Lord I miss the 80s and I truly miss you and the times we had
This song is a monument. Simple, effective, dramatic yet restrained, minimal yet so grandiose and brimming with presence, emotionally evocative, flawlessly produced and recorded. Just a statuesque recording that towers over so many of their peers. Not only the best single of the 80s but surely one of the greatest of all time. Lightning in a bottle kind of record that could come out today and still sound timeless.
I’m always so struck by the sense of physical space and atmosphere that bassline portrays. It’s huge.
The year 1985 brought me here. Since I was their and this is apart of it and the 80s are a part of me No matter where I go their I am.
One of the best videos ever made, period
A great video and song timeless
The power of song to take you back to a special place and time...The fall of 1985, senior year of high school, all the friends I made that year and all the memories of a carefree youth...I miss it so much it really does make me wanna cry!😢
Hanging out in the parking lot of Huffines Park Rec Center
me too senior in ht schiol
I was eleven, summer of 85 and me and my best buddy used to laugh at this video.
i haven't heard this song in SO long. I love it!
Brilliant song. And even more brillaint video.
Excellent song. Reminds me of many times during my teens in the ‘80’s. 😊😢
One of the best songs ever!
I heard this on Miami Vice when I was a kid and I’ve never forgotten it.
Still listening to Godley and Creme, 30 years on. I'll never stop.
No one should have been surprised by the creative genius of Godley and Creme. They directed the video for Sting's song Every Breath You Take.
One of my all time favorite songs. I love how they got Trevor Horn in near the end.
Still in my playlist in 2024!
80's Memory Triggered.. Sitting around any one of our parents living room after school watching this on MTV with a group of friends before Mom and Dad got home from work 😊 Latchkey kids!!
A very unique video and powerful song. They don't make music like this anymore.
Thank you. Finally the original video☺
It's a very moving and powerful video
I'm never gonna see what the 80s were like but only the music is left behind for me to feel what it was like 💯
I still love this song in 2023
G&C captured lightning in a bottle with this song.
