  • I never like the shadow the garage door creates when its in the up position. I love doing projects and hobbies in my garage so as part of upgrading the lighting I made a sweet 12V LED setup and installed it actually on the door! No more portable clamp lights for me. It's on a 3-Way light switch with a remote controlled relay. Works when up or down! Paired it with the wireless remotes built into my cars. So, the light switch toggles the lights and all the remotes. Was easy to install and total parts can be 150-175 dollars.
    *Update
    I have since added a 5th strip of LED lights on the lower section of the door and I love it. So much light.

    Not a bad idea, garage door companies should integrate this in there garage door panels. I am sure they will sell a whole lot more doors. If I did this my self, I think I would have a switch near the top so it would only turn on when it’s open.

      I've seen that. A micro switch or magnet switch when the door is up. It's a great idea and makes it automatic. But I have shop lighting as well so I don't always want them on. Plus with the remote controlled wireless relay I have installed it's learned it into the rf buttons on our vehicles. Gives me lots of flexibility on turning them on and off..

    *Very Cool! Looks like it would be safe, but, I'd love to see what an electrical building inspector would have to say.*

      He said it was 12vdc, low voltage doesn't come into play with building inspectors

    Great idea and they look great.. Going to do the same with mine. They have screw in plug receptacles for light sockets so I was thinking of plugging led power to garage door opener light. When the garage is opened or closed they automatically come on and turn off.

      @jnelson1057  4 года назад +2

      That's actually a great Idea. It gives you the ability to turn on and leave on, or have it automatically follow the operation of the door.

    Can you do a how to? Also what parts and links to the parts would be great! I’m fairly handy but electrical stuff is not my forte so any step by step tutorial would be greatly appreciated!

      I’ve been searching for probably hours on how to do this and I’ve found nothing.
      I think your set up seems the best where it comes on in the down position or up.
      If you made a how to, I’d really appreciate it, but I’m sure plenty others would also considering I can’t find any videos of a similar install/how to.
      Either way thanks for sharing.

    Where’d you get the bracket that attaches to the garage that holds the cord? If you could also give us the link that would be great. Thanks for your help

      It's just a hurricane strap from Home Depot. I riveted 2 straps together and drilled a 1/2 inch hole to insert the 2 screw box connector.

    Can I get links to all the items purchased? I'd love to see a walkthrough or how-to video following this because I want to do this to my garage and get a bulb +/- adapter to plug it right into my garage door opener itself so the lights come on and off automatically with the opening and closing of the door.

      I will have to look around and see if I can make a list. Most of the supplies I use in my daily work. The LED strips were from Amazon.

    Thanks for sharing. May I ask what brand is the LEDs, where did you purchase them and did you used 6000k? Cheers 🍻

    • @jnelson1057
      @jnelson1057  5 лет назад +4

      Yes. Jun Wen. SMD 2835 6000K Brite White Light. From Amazon. I actually tried a few brands. I suggest ordering 1 strip first and seeing how you like the color. Sometimes the different brands can have a slight tint you may or may not like. They all seem pretty similar in quality. Shoot for the 16 foot strips ranging from about 8 to 10 bucks each.

    Where did you buy your coil power cord? Thanks!

    • @jnelson1057
      @jnelson1057  3 года назад +2

      Online. North Shore Garage Door. Update though. In AZ we have a lot of heat. The coil relaxed a bit and after a year it did not coil the way it did when first installed. I love the idea of it and the way it worked for a year but I am looking for more of a long term solution that can handle the summers here.

    What did you use for the coiled cord to power the lights?

    • @jnelson1057
      @jnelson1057  4 года назад

      I just did a google search for Garage Door Coil Cord. I ended up using this one.
      www.northshorecommercialdoor.com/cogadoopcoco.html
      But truth be told, in the summer heat of Arizona the coil cord eventually got too much slack and failed to coil correctly. I have since switched to a simple 2 conductor extension chord and it seems to be working great.
      In the future I thing I may switch to a retractable spring loaded cord and try it out.

    I don’t understand why you would put lights on your garage door meaning you need the door open to make us of those lights and having them above you.

    • @jnelson1057
      @jnelson1057  3 года назад +5

      Yes. In this setup the lights can be on when the door is down, half, or fully open. I work on a lot of different things in my garage/shop. When my overhead shop lights are on it's great working in the back end of the garage but the front half under the door of the garage is always in a shadow. Now I have an even, overhead, well lit, garage to work in.
      The RF relay and remote is an added bonus because I can learn the RF frequency into my vehicles and have the car turn on the overhead lights as I pull in.

      In my case with the garage door up it blocks the lighting that is now above the garage door. So I like to work with my garage door up because I like the fresh air while I work so with the door up the door lighting provide lots of great light

      Why, it is low voltage, 12vdc. 100% will pass, nothing to inspect.
