Do some experimenting with LED bulbs because they can screw up the signal of your garage door opener and sometimes it won't work when the lights are on. I had a problem with mine after installing LED bulbs in the opener. I had no range from the automotive button. I had to be right in front of the garage for the opener to work. This is a genius idea. Gonna be installing my opener soon and i wanted a way to tie an existing led shop light to it so I didn't have to run another switch. Thanks for the great video.
Well what I did was use a screw in socket for the garage door opener that takes a regular 110 plug. I used a long extention cord reaching to the back of the garage then mounted 2 electrical work boxes with light fixtures. The bulbs were 60 watt (DAYLIGHT) LED's. So now when backing in the vehicle it's easier to see at night. The extention cord was good enough as I was going to use 14 guage romex but like I said, the heavy duty extention cord worked just fine.
As a garage installer, by profession, I must put out there that putting LED lights by your garage opener can sometimes interfere with the communication with your wireless remotes both in your vehicle and the exterior keypads. It is a great idea and may not effect ALL openers, but I personally have encountered the issue where the customer installed LED lights and immediately good remotes barely work outside of the garage. But KUDOS on the ingenuity.
Matthew Craig I was gonna say the same thing but now I don’t have to. I put a higher lumen led bulb in my opener and the door wouldn’t close when I used the remote. I thought oh no I guess my opener went bad. Then thought well the problem didn’t start until I changed the bulbs so put the old bulb back in and was glad I didn’t need a new opener. Now they make leds specifically for openers so I put a couple of those in and now no problem.
I just installed new genie openers to replace ~4 year old chamberlains with myQ that refused to work with feit led bulbs. The genies have at least 400’ range with the same bulbs, so I don’t know what the difference is but I have no complaints with my genies.
@@Kitearmy It's a flaw in the Liftmaster boards, it causes an excessive power draw through a resistor near the receiver part of the board which reduces the range it can pickup a remote from.
I did this exact set up with my 3/4 hp craftsman garage door opener. The remote clickers didnt work very well after that. I did extend the antenna to outside the door. Garage door tech here. You will have interference issues because of the radio frequency. This can also damage your circuit board and any tech worth their salt, will know this is the damage cause. That makes you have NO warranty and are back out the money of a new opener.

You mention 125 watts. Is that actual load or equivalent to 125 watts of incandescent light? I ask because normally all light fixtures have a maximum wattage for light bulbs on a sticker inside near the sockets. This is to prevent over amp draw as well as the associated heat which can cause damage or fire. Is that socket and/or wiring getting hot?
Great hack! It may or may not work with Chamberlain garage door openers. For some reason some LED bulbs will impair the ability to receive signals from either a remote or a wireless keypad. I found that out the hard way and everything went back to normal by using either an incandescent bulb or a compact fluorescent bulb. Some Chamberlin-approved LED bulbs will work.
@@Kitearmy I installed the LED light in an overhead light fixture only a few feet from the GDO and the opener works OK now. Just don't screw the LED right into the GDO's light fixture itself.
They sell these with motion sensors built in. I have one in the garage door opener circuit with motion. And two more that are switchable on the wall. Any movement in the garage and the light comes on. We love them!
I did that the day I got the first craftsman and think that was before youtube was invented LOL, I am about o do another hack on these types of garage led lights again
I’ve been looking for this solution for a year. Not for the garage opener , but my light socket is on the wall, not the ceiling. I had bought one of these led lights when you could only get them online, for my former garage ,and it lit up that garage great. That garage had finished walls , ceiling, and was painted. My current 50 year old garage , is more dungeon like and need some work.Warning on these fixtures, don’t look towards the light before you turn it on. I had no idea I was doing this until bought this light. It will cause short term blindness🤣😎
The receiver in my garage door wouldn't work when a modern LED/CFL bulb was attached to it. I ended up swapping for an old-school incandescent bulb to resolve the issue, otherwise I couldn't close (or open) the garage using the remote while the lite was still on. I'd wonder if others would have similar issues, or if having the extension would resolve the issue.
I just have a concern regarding Watts. My Door Opener requires max a 40 W bulb and I have a 100W deformable light, would it be risky to use the extension on this door opener with the 60W extension socket? What would you recommend?

This is to prevent over amp draw as well as the associated heat which can cause damage or fire.
Is that socket and/or wiring getting hot?
What about wattage? Is it still withing wattage supported by garage opener light socket? Can it be potential fire hazard?
This may be the most useful, to the point, video I’ve ever watched. Keep it up!
Thanks mate - so glad you liked
Good tip!
I had two of these in my old Craftsman GDO and worked great. Replaced with new Chamberlain, and remotes won't work now.
@@bobdrexler426 I hear some charberlain hav that problem
@@Kitearmy I installed the LED light in an overhead light fixture only a few feet from the GDO and the opener works OK now. Just don't screw the LED right into the GDO's light fixture itself.
You rock this is outstanding ❤
Thanks mate
Pretty cool setup. I’m going to buy a couple for my work shop next week. Thank you
Thanks mate
Awesome garage light hack. Thanks for sharing.
You bet
These aren’t to much wattage for a socket that takes 60watt bulbs ?
Where do you get the long extensions ??
I can only find short ones on Amazon and Ali Express.
Looking for a 3 foot one .
They sell these with motion sensors built in. I have one in the garage door opener circuit with motion. And two more that are switchable on the wall. Any movement in the garage and the light comes on. We love them!
Very cool!
Where do you get the motion sensor one
Had to have been Amazon. The light is screw in and you need to get a screw in adapter with ac prongs to 🔌 in.
These a bright white light color or more daylight. Bluish ?
I would say bright white
I did that the day I got the first craftsman and think that was before youtube was invented LOL, I am about o do another hack on these types of garage led lights again
life before youtube - sad
Where did you buy the extension from and does it come shorter
link below
idea was great BUT my garage light auto shuts off and when it is off, there is no power to the lights sockets in the garage door opener, any ideas?
I can turn mine on
Love this idea! Great job!
Thank you! Cheers!
how long is that extender
Easy and simple but brilliant idea good job
Thank you! Cheers!
How do you fix when one of the led panels fails? I know I will need to research what happened with the light
They are bright for sure - thanks for comment
I have the same kind except I have the three panel and mine is not on the garage door opener and mine is motion sensored and works like a charm :)
cool
The receiver in my garage door wouldn't work when a modern LED/CFL bulb was attached to it. I ended up swapping for an old-school incandescent bulb to resolve the issue, otherwise I couldn't close (or open) the garage using the remote while the lite was still on. I'd wonder if others would have similar issues, or if having the extension would resolve the issue.
I have had no problems
You can buy the right led bulb for the opener.
Fantastic! Thank you.
doing this now! thanks for the idea
welcome
I just have a concern regarding Watts. My Door Opener requires max a 40 W bulb and I have a 100W deformable light, would it be risky to use the extension on this door opener with the 60W extension socket? What would you recommend?
yeah - I would not do that - try to find a 40w led deformable
