This could mean shopping second-hand at estate sales or reputable second-hand sites and stores. One hundred percent agree on the list. I’m 64 and I have gotten rid of nearly all my costume jewelry. If I’m going out it’s generally gold hoops, pearls (and I inherited a pair of black pearls including necklace which are stunning) or diamond studs. And I wear these out with friends, to concerts with jeans just about anywhere. After all these years of being afraid to wear them I now love them! (And I do like Monica Vinador)

I didn’t see where it was brought up, but another thing to keep in mind for longevity in the closet would be to buy solids. I avoid prints. Solids are more versatile and timeless.

Basic, timeless pieces are always a good idea. However, one can find quality items for less than $100 or even $50 that will hold up for years. I have never purchased an item of clothing over $100. And I’ve had items that are older than my son who is turning 17 next week. You don’t have to spend a lot, but you do need to look at how it’s made.

I have a beautiful classic scarf that is 25 yrs old that I paid $30.00 plus a beautiful silk blend tuxedo tunic with rhinestone bezel buttons and French cuffs I purchased for $60.00 that's 32 yrs old. Both still look stunning all these years later. Buying on a budget doesn't need to mean cheap.

I have pretty much all of this 😂 been building and adjusting my wardrobe for years and now I feel that most of what I own and wear are the timeless classics. I rarely buy trends and occasionally aquire some great vintage peices that I wear with my basics. I am totally in love with my closet.

I was teased endlessly all through the mandatory skinny jean years for wearing straight leg jeans sometimes. I’ve always preferred them. Yes, let’s hope they become “timeless”. My current contrarian thing is to continue to wear my white or rose gold vs the pervasive yellow gold, which clashes terribly with my cooler undertone.
I made the transition to sterling silver decades ago and I love every piece. I have blue undertones, so all my jewelry looks fantastic with my silver hair.

I have a Brighten handbag my mom gave me as a hand me down that I just love to carry around! It really has held up way better than any hand bag or purse I have had in my wardrobe! I also have a pair of pink sneakers that I wear all the time that is the Tried and True brand from Walmart that have really held up also! So much better than any of my Blowfish or Sketchers I have in my wardrobe

My friend brought me a cashmere scarf from her trip to Jerusalem. It's bright colors...turquoise, pink, gold....I wear it all the time and I always get compliments! You always talk about special pieces...its probably the most special accessory I own 😊
I get the idea of high quality scarves but I am a big fan of variety- especially when wearing something near your face. The low cost of beautiful scarves makes it so easy to grab something different, something to uplift you and comfort you.

All hail the SOCK BOOTIE! I‘ve a pair of Stuart Weitzman Prancer booties in black suede that I‘ve had for over 10 years and I continue to wear and love them. I think key to having timeless pieces is investing the time and relatively minor money to look after them. The suede brush for my beloved booties is my friend!!

I bought a ysl nikki bag in September and have used it just about everyday, I love it so much. I don't wear heels, white button up shirts, or blazers and i never change my diamond hoops, diamond necklace, and only wear my diamond and wedding band on my finger.
I have bought scarves at Kmart over thirty years ago, I still have them. I am fifty nine years old, I can't justify expensive pieces. I work third shift, I am either in scrubs or pajamas!

Only recently have I been realizing it’s ok to invest in quality pieces that last, rather than get cheap pieces. It’s taken me awhile to accept this because I’m not a big spender by nature. However I’ve found that I can try things on at Dillards, figure out what I like, and then wait for them to be fazed out online the next season. It’s hit or miss sometimes if you wait that long, but I’ve got some great deals on pieces that I’m sure I’ll enjoy for years.
I remember (as much as I loved to watch Seinfeld) thinking it was so dorky how Jerry always had on these crisp white sneakers. 😂 My current crisp, white sneakers are the Converse move platform.

My family appreciates fine jewelry as it holds its value, it’s a personal and thoughtful gift as well; your insight guides me on how to shop, style, get the most wear out of my own “jewelry drobe”🙏🏻 I enjoy collecting Coach bags as well as a local designer- I change my bag often with my outfits so I won’t (and don’t need to) spend more than $500 on a handbag. Quality shoes! So Important to wear ones that can be cleaned, repaired, and hold their structure. Great topic, thank you a lot. I will always choose quality over quantity. But I'm a big fan of mid range brands and would never consider to buy anything designer because in my opinion the prices are way to high compared to the quality you get. Of course a Chanel bag is (hopefully) better made than a Walmart bag, but you can get the same excellent material and craftsmanship from bags that cost for example 500 dollars/ euros. I for example own a bag from a Danish Brand called Adax. It's excellent leather and handmade in Italy.

Right on spot, if I'd kept all the money I've wasted when I was younger into fancy jewels that either broke down after a few weeks, or looked lacklustre very quickly... As we say here in France : "Si jeunesse savait..." "If youth knew..." Whereas still wearing my 16th annviersary pearl necklace mixed to some gold necklaces, looks modern and fresh. Same goes for trendy bags that didn't withstand tear and wear and again the genuine classic purses are still ok and will for ever, with help of the occasional visit to the cobbler. They don't only do shoes but can maintain bags as well.

And here I am complaining about our rainy cold May days in Massachusetts. I have all those pieces in my wardrobe, I know how you feel about the cheaper jewelry we all purchased back in the day. Of course, so much of it has tarnished and needed to be discarded. I just purchased a black blazer to replace a beautiful but very old Ann Taylor blazer from years ago. I tried on so many black blazers last weekend at the mall and just couldn't decide. Nothing really looked good on me. I finally purchased a plain black Express Blazer that looked pretty good. But I loved the Zara blazer that looked like a Balmain blazer. My husband just didn't like it, so I didn't buy it. But I am still thinking of that blazer as we speak.... I may just go back and get it, if it is still there when I go back to Zara. Also, just want to say, I am thinking of you today. Sunglasses can be paired with anything, and earrings too - if you feel like it's too much, opt for a smaller earring with your hat! Ultimately it is all about how you feel in what you are wearing. xo
By the way, on fabric of sneakers, Thousand Fell and many other leather-ish shoes are easy to wipe, but Vivaia has a machine washable white. I purchased a pair and washed twice now and they're great. BUT they run about a size big. The laces have stretch which is fun too. You may want to try them. Great customer service company. : )

Hi Erin, now that fall is getting closer can you do a video about how to wear booties (like chelsea boots) with the straight or wider leg jeans/trousers that are in style now a days? I can wear them with sandals but I'm lost as to how to wear them with ankle boots... Which inseam length is best, etc I'm so used to skinny jeans... Having a hard time letting go especially in the cooler months because of the above reason. And I feel that with wider leg there's a gap between the pants and my legs where the brutal MN cold wind gets in and freezes me. This doesn't happen with skinny pants. So I take warmth over style. I totally get it! Honestly, you DO still need your skinny jeans for some boots. It's practical, easy to wear, and they just work best sometimes. How do you suggest we identify these classics when they are released? Eg the Balenciaga blazer, yes amazing and you’ve done well with it, but it has been around for a while and I’m reluctant to spend that money on it now. One hundred percent agree on the list. I’m 64 and I have gotten rid of nearly all my costume jewelry. If I’m going out it’s generally gold hoops, pearls (and I inherited a pair of black pearls including necklace which are stunning) or diamond studs. And I wear these out with friends, to concerts with jeans just about anywhere. After all these years of being afraid to wear them I now love them! (And I do like Monica Vinador)

I didn’t see where it was brought up, but another thing to keep in mind for longevity in the closet would be to buy solids. I avoid prints. Solids are more versatile and timeless.

Basic, timeless pieces are always a good idea. However, one can find quality items for less than $100 or even $50 that will hold up for years. I have never purchased an item of clothing over $100. And I’ve had items that are older than my son who is turning 17 next week. You don’t have to spend a lot, but you do need to look at how it’s made.

I have a beautiful classic scarf that is 25 yrs old that I paid $30.00 plus a beautiful silk blend tuxedo tunic with rhinestone bezel buttons and French cuffs I purchased for $60.00 that's 32 yrs old. Both still look stunning all these years later. Buying on a budget doesn't need to mean cheap.

LOVE IT! I have every single thing you mentioned but you left out a BIGGIE... a WELL CUT, High Quality Black Leather Jacket! I have some beautiful ones made in Florence but my most worn is my All Saints Biker Jacket. I could literally survive with faded blue jeans, black jeans, black t, white t, Black Balmain, Black Leather Jacket, Black Gucci Belt, Black Booties & Black cowboy boots! Add a Blk/Wht Chanel Scarf, gold chain, gold wedding rings, and diamond studs. I've worn an outfit from this collection building houses in Mexico, traveling Europe, Clubbing in Nashville AND to dinner at Mar a Lago.
The pointy toe pumps are my favorite...even if they go out of style...I will still be wearing mine...I love them.

I was teased endlessly all through the mandatory skinny jean years for wearing straight leg jeans sometimes. I’ve always preferred them. Yes, let’s hope they become “timeless”. My current contrarian thing is to continue to wear my white or rose gold vs the pervasive yellow gold, which clashes terribly with my cooler undertone.
I made the transition to sterling silver decades ago and I love every piece. I have blue undertones, so all my jewelry looks fantastic with my silver hair.
And now people are teasing people in skinny jeans, the concept of trends is actually kinda gross lol

I gave up high end logo handbags, shoes and sunglasses years ago. Im going the quiet luxury route. As for shoes, Stan Smith is the way to go and I purchase/support local jewelry, especially southwest which in itself is timeless.

I have a Brighten handbag my mom gave me as a hand me down that I just love to carry around! It really has held up way better than any hand bag or purse I have had in my wardrobe! I also have a pair of pink sneakers that I wear all the time that is the Tried and True brand from Walmart that have really held up also! So much better than any of my Blowfish or Sketchers I have in my wardrobe

I do believe in high quality, but some prestige pieces that are tens of thousands of dollars each are not for the quality but for ego and that time has passed for me -- I bought things like that in the 90s (and still have all of them) but no longer. My friend brought me a cashmere scarf from her trip to Jerusalem. It's bright colors...turquoise, pink, gold....I wear it all the time and I always get compliments! You always talk about special pieces...its probably the most special accessory I own 😊
I get the idea of high quality scarves but I am a big fan of variety- especially when wearing something near your face. The low cost of beautiful scarves makes it so easy to grab something different, something to uplift you and comfort you.

All hail the SOCK BOOTIE! I‘ve a pair of Stuart Weitzman Prancer booties in black suede that I‘ve had for over 10 years and I continue to wear and love them. I think key to having timeless pieces is investing the time and relatively minor money to look after them. The suede brush for my beloved booties is my friend!!

I bought a ysl nikki bag in September and have used it just about everyday, I love it so much. I don't wear heels, white button up shirts, or blazers and i never change my diamond hoops, diamond necklace, and only wear my diamond and wedding band on my finger.
I have bought scarves at Kmart over thirty years ago, I still have them.
I am fifty nine years old, I can't justify expensive pieces. I work third shift, I am either in scrubs or pajamas!

Only recently have I been realizing it’s ok to invest in quality pieces that last, rather than get cheap pieces. It’s taken me awhile to accept this because I’m not a big spender by nature. However I’ve found that I can try things on at Dillards, figure out what I like, and then wait for them to be fazed out online the next season. It’s hit or miss sometimes if you wait that long, but I’ve got some great deals on pieces that I’m sure I’ll enjoy for years.
I remember (as much as I loved to watch Seinfeld) thinking it was so dorky how Jerry always had on these crisp white sneakers. 😂

Love this video. I have always relied on classic pieces as I realized that a good item was an investment. Actually, some pieces feel like a friend I can rely on. I do have to get a new pair of white sneakers, I just don't favor shoes I can't put on and take off quickly as much.

My family appreciates fine jewelry as it holds its value, it’s a personal and thoughtful gift as well; your insight guides me on how to shop, style, get the most wear out of my own “jewelry drobe”🙏🏻 I enjoy collecting Coach bags as well as a local designer- I change my bag often with my outfits so I won’t (and don’t need to) spend more than $500 on a handbag. Quality shoes! So Important to wear ones that can be cleaned, repaired, and hold their structure. And coats too... bring an outfit together and need to be intentional, I have a few silhouettes- yet to add a blazer- have my eyes on a new Veronica Beard boutique in my area - I’m obsessed with the enamel flower buttons, and uncompromising quality 🤩 will certainly be a worthy investment piece.

But I'm a big fan of mid range brands and would never consider to buy anything designer because in my opinion the prices are way to high compared to the quality you get. Of course a Chanel bag is (hopefully) better made than a Walmart bag, but you can get the same excellent material and craftsmanship from bags that cost for example 500 dollars/ euros. I for example own a bag from a Danish Brand called Adax. It's excellent leather and handmade in Italy.

Right on spot, if I'd kept all the money I've wasted when I was younger into fancy jewels that either broke down after a few weeks, or looked lacklustre very quickly... As we say here in France : "Si jeunesse savait..." "If youth knew..." Whereas still wearing my 16th annviersary pearl necklace mixed to some gold necklaces, looks modern and fresh. Same goes for trendy bags that didn't withstand tear and wear and again the genuine classic purses are still ok and will for ever, with help of the occasional visit to the cobbler. They don't only do shoes but can maintain bags as well.

And here I am complaining about our rainy cold May days in Massachusetts. I have all those pieces in my wardrobe, I know how you feel about the cheaper jewelry we all purchased back in the day. I tried on so many black blazers last weekend at the mall and just couldn't decide. Nothing really looked good on me. I finally purchased a plain black Express Blazer that looked pretty good. But I loved the Zara blazer that looked like a Balmain blazer. My husband just didn't like it, so I didn't buy it. But I am still thinking of that blazer as we speak.... I may just go back and get it, if it is still there when I go back to Zara. Also, just want to say, I am thinking of you today. It looks like you might have had a very trying/emotional day prior to filming. Hang in there.

Sunglasses can be paired with anything, and earrings too - if you feel like it's too much, opt for a smaller earring with your hat! Ultimately it is all about how you feel in what you are wearing. xo

By the way, on fabric of sneakers, Thousand Fell and many other leather-ish shoes are easy to wipe, but Vivaia has a machine washable white. I purchased a pair and washed twice now and they're great. BUT they run about a size big. The laces have stretch which is fun too. You may want to try them. Great customer service company. : )

Hi Erin, now that fall is getting closer can you do a video about how to wear booties (like chelsea boots) with the straight or wider leg jeans/trousers that are in style now a days? I can wear them with sandals but I'm lost as to how to wear them with ankle boots... Which inseam length is best, etc
I'm so used to skinny jeans... Having a hard time letting go especially in the cooler months because of the above reason. And I feel that with wider leg there's a gap between the pants and my legs where the brutal MN cold wind gets in and freezes me. This doesn't happen with skinny pants. So I take warmth over style. I need guidance on how to use these wider pants.

I totally get it! Honestly, you DO still need your skinny jeans for some boots. It's practical, easy to wear, and they just work best sometimes. When it's freezing, you'll be so much warmer with a good warm sock underneath too so that you skin doesn't ever have a chance of touching that brutal air!! Hope this helps with the tough topic of boots and jeans! xo
How do you suggest we identify these classics when they are released? Eg the Balenciaga blazer, yes amazing and you’ve done well with it, but it has been around for a while and I’m reluctant to spend that money on it now. Would have considered it years ago if I could look into the future and see that it wasn’t a trend piece
