    Part of keeping a bike is the ritual of cleaning! Quite theraputic ! Have a Goldwing myself ! Never seen a problem but one golden rule is do not use a high presure jet washer with foaming agent. Few years ago had a GS with gold wheels

      How detailed is ritual cleaning? Do you get on your back and right underneath, thoroughly clean the wheels?

      @@HighlandRider A no to lie on your back! My GS had a problem with wheel paint peeling! Also had a Ducati where paint bubbled! So stopped using car wash type cleaning agents. Started using a bucket and sponge! Several products for wheels. One I would recommend is XCP rust blocker! I use it on the parts u cannot see underneath and wheels. A low mechanics trolly stool saves the knees! Good luck with new GS

    No motorcycle company will cover rust and corrosion damage from riding in salty weather, be it salt dust on the road or salt air from living near the coast in marine salt air. You have to keep them clean and waxed properly to protect them.
    I don't think all the facts were given in this video. He said he is in Scotland but didn't say a location. The salt air in maritime locations do lots of damage which is present on this bike....😢
    I don't work for any company but have been riding since the early 1970s in many coastal locations and know the damage salt on roads and salt air that happens.

    • @HighlandRider
      @HighlandRider  3 месяца назад +1

      Interesting Stu. Firstly, not sure why it matters but I bow to your knowledge of salt, I live in Inverness, about 0.9 miles from the twon centre. I ride in The Highlands, and sometimes that takes me on coastal roads. Motorcycle companies do deal with warranty claims due to rust and corrosion, specifically Harley Davidson changed the fron forks on my Low Rider due to pitting and BMW changed the engine on my GS due to corrosion on the head cases, and the brake calipers on my RT, which seized due to corrosion. Not sure what other facts you want.

    Just thinking of buying the exact same bike, 22 plate in blue. I can't believe the corrosion on your bike. Its really made me reconsider buying one. I've had several Hondas in the past and they have been faultless.
    How common is this corrosion problem on the newer Goldwing models?

    • @HighlandRider
      @HighlandRider  Месяц назад +1

      That is hard to say. The paint on these newer bikes is very thin, that is an accepted fact. So it depends how you look after it. The 'good' owners who seem to suffer no corrosion are obsessive cleaners, especially the back wheel. You either need to get the bike off the ground and clean the back wheel and wheel caliper fully, or get it ceramic coated, although that will not protect the calliper. If you look at the responses on the rest of my videos on this you will see I wasn't alone, and these bikes do need a lot of care. Note, although it is not in any of my videos, I had started to get a problem with my DCT not disengaging at junctions and I was having to hold it on the brake.

      I'm going to look at one tomorrow; if I buy it I'll have to be more careful with the cleaning than I am with my BMW GS. Thanks for sharing your issues. It helps the rest of us.

    Concerned by this because I've bought a '22 identical to yours, picking it up this weekend. The previous gen 1800s were notorious for wheel corrosion because they were unlacquered alloy; my current bike's wheels were powder-coated black at some point in the past. I thought the new Goldwings with painted black wheels would avoid this issue.
    The exhaust covers remind me of the CB1100 I had for a while; chromed steel mudguards which had absolutely no protective coating on the underside. Of course they look great until the rust breaks through from beneath, by which time they're beyond repair.
    One other comment though; you say the bike doesn't get ridden in winter, yet you've got a video on your channel talking about what a great winter bike it is, and showing it just after a ride which you went on following a period of snow. No doubt you took great care to clean it but it's not going to help with any warranty argument (and it's impossible to clean behind that exhaust cover anyway).
    I really appreciate you sharing this, and the first thing I'll do when I get my bike home is take off the exhaust covers, clean them up and put a protection on them (Dinitrol / Waxoyl or maybe a tough paint)
    I live in Blackpool by the way (I think your bike came from the same dealer group as Blackpool Honda) so my nemesis is sea spray, thankfully the roads don't get salted much in winter!

    • @HighlandRider
      @HighlandRider  4 месяца назад

      Hello Chris, you are right on two counts. One I got the bike from Northwest Honda and I will be calling them tomorrow. Second, yes I did ride it in winter, one ride whenever that video was taken, I think around Christmas 2022. I did clean it afterwards, just not well enough. For the purposes of warranty claim, I have never been told by Honda, nor is it the manual that I can find, not to ride in winter. I expect bikes to suffer in winter, it is the nature of them.

    The clearcoat anodizing on normal wheels is way more robust to corrosion as well as the chrome finish on exhaust covers. The blacked-out version is just flat black paint and in your corrosive salt environment would require you to wash and dry the bike getting it perfectly clean after every ride, The best choice would be to break down the wheel and tire and have your wheel and other parts carefully cleaned and powder coated black to seal it from the harsh elements. I could understand how the manufacturer or dealerships would not want to address this as millions of these bikes are sold and ridden worldwide without these results occurring. I have experienced this aluminum corrosion issue myself recently. I had placed three of my expensive paint guns inside a rubbermaid storage container and placed in my attic here in Tampa, Florida
    I brought the tote down and looked inside and all three spray guns had rotted away. I was amazed. One was anodized red but still corroded to dust! $1500 gone in only two years inside a dry attic the humidity and heat alone did it. I am originally from Seattle, WA where this would never happen in a lifetime. Different weather and conditions change everything. Good luck, it's a great bike and that damage is cosmetics only that you can correct. Thanks for sharing.

    It is possible that your concrete floor in the garage is causing galvanic corrosion when you park your bike on it using the centerstand (or sidestand). The telltale sign is that the bottom of the stand turns white with corrosion. I had an Indian chrome sidestand completely peel its chrome off on my concrete floor so I replaced it and parked on a plastic sheet. Problem solved. My KTM centerstand showed the same corrosion until separating it from the concrete. In cold climates, like mine, some contractors request Calcium Chloride be added to concrete to make it cure faster and not freeze.

    • @HighlandRider
      @HighlandRider  3 месяца назад

      That is very interesting and could be possible. I will look into that some more, but question, if that is the case, would garage mats help? So putting a barrier between the bike and the concrete floor?

    • @jgoogleheim8880
      @jgoogleheim8880 3 месяца назад

      @@HighlandRider Rubber mats would work. anything noncondutive will work. I have used 1/4" plywood and plastic signs. Cardboard doesn't work because it holds moisture and that makes a good conductor. Sorry you had to go through this. I actually blamed Indian for my corroded sidestand but the problem was my concrete floor. I put bits of steel on the floor as a test and they turned white and corroded very quickly. I thought this was a winter New England problem for pouring concrete floors. While it is possible your bike was made using defective materials it seems something is corroding it. Another possibility would be if roads in your area are treated with chemicals. I have to wait until several rains wash away the salt etc. after winter snow and ice melts.

It shows how the Honda qualty is really dropping, including their aftersales service. I was thinking of trading both my GS and RT in for a wing, but not after watching this. Sounds also like the dealer expected the corrosion??

      Bikes rust, it is an occupational hazard, and as such we have to take measures especially if lots of winter riding is to be done. Personally, riding in the cold and ice is no longer what I want to do on a regular basis, but when you get that odd sunny winters day, then I like the odd ride for an hour or two. Not on this bike though, I have learned my lesson. Have just purchased Lanoguard for further protection, as need more than ACF 50 can deliver.

      Salt dust does as much corrosion damage, the silent killer, as does riding in the wet snow.
      I don't ride in the winter unless there gas been a good rain to wash the salt away off the roads no matter how nice it is out.

Luckily my dealer fitted a new wheel and tyre from a new bike they had in stock and they bore the cost!!! I also have a 2019 GSA and a 2021 RT both with more miles and ridden in winter with no corrosion on the wheels. The Goldwing will be traded for a new 1600GTL😎

      Just had an email from Honda saying they will change the heat guards but not the wheels, as wheels are not covered under warranty. Just bought a 2020 GSA to ride while I sort this out, and now I can take my time. Warranty booklet doesn't mention wheels as an exemption so will see how they respond to that. In the meantime, I will keep the negative videos coming.

    It’s not just a Honda Goldwing problem. I think it’s an industry wide problem. Motorcycle manufacturers are cutting corners and some components are just not painted correctly. I have a 2022 Hayabusa. I am a fair weather rider. I’ve had to re spray the back wheel. The paint on the swinging arm is peeling off. Other components have needed to be re painted. I don’t think it matters which make of motorcycle you buy these days. They all have let standards fall.
