We call it sister soup. My sister and I made it for each other when we were young. Any excuse to make it but especially if one was sick. She died 45 years ago but I still make it and think of her every time. Still so comforting.
Well that’s a good name for it sister Sue I had seven brothers and sisters my mom had eight kids all of my brothers are gone there was three of them and three of my sisters passed away I have one sibling left I lost my only child seven years ago and I thought it was horrible when I lost my siblings and my mother but nothing nothing compares to losing your child it’s a pain you live with every single day and I think it’s even more heartbreaking for me because he was my only child left me with nothing to live so I got me a puppy she is seven years old now she’s my little Servace DogI was trying to figure out how to send you a picture of her But I don’t see an option so I can send a photo she is so adorable if I can figure it out I’ll send you one
I was taught very a very similar recipe by an 87 year old widower (I was 24, it was the first soup I EVER liked so I had to learn it!). It went like this: sauté the bacon in your soup pot until crisp, remove and set aside. Save some grease in the pot. Sauté onions in bacon grease, add potatoes, chicken broth powder and water to cover. Simmer until potatoes are still firm but tender. Mix cornstarch into milk -or- half & half -or- cream (More cornstarch for milk, less for cream to get the consistency you want). Add this mix to rapidly simmering potatoes, stir gently until thickened, adjust salt & pepper to your liking. By the time it has thickened, the potatoes are soft and creamy. Over the last 40 years, this soup has become the base for clam chowder, corn chowder, chicken chowder, cheddar kielbasa soup, broccoli cheddar soup and asparagus soup. The permutations are endless!
Potato soup from scratch deluxe version.. and my daughter loves it also. It saved us in a heavy snowstorm one year until we could get dug out when I had made an extra big pot the day before. This looks just wonderful! Merry Christmas! 🎄🎄🎄
On Christmas Eve, we always eat “Tailgate” soup. It’s a ground beef base soup with minestrone and Rotel (several more ingredients). My dad always made it early in the day and whenever we had time to stop by and eat, it was ready. Even though Dad has gone, we continue the tradition! Your potato soup is a lot like ours, but I use baked potatoes instead of boiled. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
I love a good potato soup. Sometimes I like it loaded, but I also like just plain soup like Mom made-just potatoes, butter, milk, a little onion, celery, salt, and pepper. Last New Year’s Day I made Turnip green soup with black eyed peas and great northern beans. I had planned on making it this year, but the weather put a crimp in our Christmas. New Year’s Day is our “make-up day.”
Looks delicious, my favorite soup, all the ones my neighbor makes and gives me the recipes for, plus samples, 81 years old, some really good ones, favorite tomato basil cognac, she loved how I changed it but never ever leave out the cognac, it makes it.
It’s amazing how different a simple potato soup recipe can be from another. I was very poor growing up and we didn’t have access to things like cream. We sautéed onion in the pot maybe with some peppers and then add the potatoes and evaporated milk and water. We mashed up soup a little leaving a few larger pieces and usually topped with sour cream and hot sauce 😊 love your version too I will try it.
My husband loves potato soup. I’m going to try your recipe. I did your chicken and dumplings and buttermilk biscuits today. I actually used Turkey stock from our thanksgiving Turkey and our left over Turkey. So, technically it was Turkey and dumplings. It was a hit!
Hello Tammy! I made this potato soup recipe for supper tonight along with a small salad & cornbread. It was a hit with hubby! Thank you, thank you. I now have a new dish to add to my regular winter menus. I did tweak a bit... I added 4 colby jack cheese slices (to melt) a small bag of frozen veggie mix (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots & mushrooms) along with some Conecuh hot & spicy sausage (sliced & cooked separately for hubby). Added it to bottom of bowl with the soup & topped it all with green onions & cheese for him. It was so good! You inspired me to get cooking today, thanks again!
We eat Elysian Bisque. It has carrots, bacon, mushrooms and creme plus nutmeg, salt and pepper. We eat it with a baguette of French bread. It's so tasty. I love potato soup too. It warms the heart and soul. Merry Christmas!!
Hi Tammy! I remember seeing your earlier video making potato soup & noticed how skillfully you peeled the potatoes with a paring knife, Reminded me of my grandmother peeling potatoes. Talk about knife skills!! Your use of bullion when cooking the potatoes is an excellent tip. It makes a big difference in the flavor of the soup. A big fave with my crew. We've made this countless times! Have to 'fess up to not having soup tonight but we did make your awesome Brunswick stew!! Yum! Have a Merry Christmas!! 😊
Very happy to see that you do not drain your potatoes, I have a couple of variations to the recipe, I cook chopped celery and dehydrated minced onions, (my children did not like onions unless they never knew they ate them and the dehydrated ones simply disappear) with the potatoes, the only other difference, I add cubed ham steak a couple of minutes before I add the cream, let it simmer to meld the flavors. When I was a child we didn't always have money for meat to add let alone ham steak, but we always had bacon grease, and often that is what was used for extra flavor.
I can totally vouch for how delicious your potato soup is! My whole family loves it! Your video gave me a great idea. Everyone in my household has covid right now and a friend of mine dropped off a spiral ham for us to eat on Christmas day. I wasn't sure what to make with the ham, but now I know....., your potato soup!!! Merry Christmas!!! 🎄🎄🎄
I saw two days ago my local Kroger had 5 lb. bag of russet potatoes on sale for .99! They must had over purchased for Christmas. I have not seen that price in a long time! I snagged a bag, and changed my Christmas meal plan. I had planned cheesy, frozen O'Brien hash browns in the crockpot. I am now preparing cheesy mashed potatoes, kept warm in crock pot. Then later in the week I plan cream of potato soup with some of our Christmas ham.
My wife and I are eating potato soup right now 😃. We both are getting over the flu, so our family get togethers have been postponed a week. She said, “I feel like potato soup and CHRISTmas shows”…and here we are. Merry CHRISTmas!
I can’t of anything better than potato soup. My mama ALWAYS made potato soup when we were sick. I bet I’ve had a ton of potato soup in my lifetime. I’m a soup lover. My very favorite soup is broccoli cheddar soup. I’d rather have that than a steak. Give me a bowl of soup and cornbread, I’m one happy woman. I hope you and Chris and your family will have a very merry Christmas and a blessed New Year filled with joy and happiness.
Oh, Tammy when you called your potato soup, a comfort food, it reminded me of my mother who has been gone 30 years from my life. She was the best cook. Whenever I was sick as a child or an adult, she would make me potato soup and I always felt better. Was it the soup or the love? Thank you for this recipe and I will definitely be making it for myself. Merry Christmas Eve and Merry Christmas to you and Chris.
I love potato soup! I like the videos where you cook a whole meal or you make your famous cakes. I think you go out of your way to make it look easy. Chris I haven't forgotten you, thank you for taking care that the video gets filmed so good. I love when you help Tammy remember a word. When my husband was alive, we knew what each other was going to say before it was said. My prayer for you two is a very happy Christmas and a blessed New Year.
Tammy I would love it if you did a crockpot series……I’m old and I live be myself so I virtually stopped cooking but then I was eating crap so I started crockpoting so I can freeze half and still eat off it for a couple of days….I made your turkey crockpot dinner on Thanksgiving for myself and it was delicious
Love, love, love potato soup. It is pure comfort food. I add a can of clams with juice to my husband’s bowl. We love soups, homemade hamburger-vegetable, Creamy Curried Zucchini soup, homemade Zuppa Toscana & She Crab Soup. I love soups when it’s cold.
Merry Christmas, Tammy and Chris! This potato soup does look delicious! We like our potato soup fixed exactly the same way! But even more than potato soup, I love bacon corn chowder. Not sure you’ve ever made corn chowder, but I love it made very similar with the bacon, green onions, and cheese. We do use more bacon though, and then use just the green onions and cheese as garnish. But somehow I have lost my corn chowder recipe and wondered if you have one. It’s another great stick-to-your-ribs soup for winter!
I can peel a potato faster with a paring knife than with a peeler, also. I chop them the same as you too. Just like “My” Mama did. The Grandchildren called her “GrandMary” because she said Granny sounded to old. I was born in Atlanta, you remind me of how she cooked for us. Potato’s, white gravy and cat head biscuits are my favorite breakfast. On occasion we had bacon, a pure treat. And country sausage with pepper and sage from my Aunt Maggie’s freshly ground pork from her own farm. That part made us sad but we still ate it. Cornbread, beans and cornbread makes your tummy happy. The potato soup was like yours, and to stretch it for a family of 7, she put dumplings in there. When she made the rare cobbler, scraps of crust were made into little dumplings dropped into the blackberry juicy filling before she put the top crust on. Yummy. Whoever said food doesn’t make you happy” was obviously not from the South. My brother used to say, I don’t date those little skinny girls because when you hug them real good they “crunch”. My daughter told me she would rather sit in my lap because I was “fluffy”. I loved that. Take care love y’all back. Great recipes and good company.
Love all sorts of soups....this video has inspired me to make your potato soup recipe!! We eat yellow split pea soup with ham, vegetable beef soup, chicken veggies soup, the list is long...thank you for another nice video Tammy!
My grandma would make that awesome potato soup and make a pan of cornbread. I'd pour it over a hot piece of cornbread! SO GOOD! Thank you for the memories :-) -)
Just made this soup and it is excellent. I chopped and microwaved some celery so it was cooked but still alittle crunchy and added that to the pot. I cant wait to make this again.
Potato soup is one of my favorites and I always buy it instead of making it! Now I feel a little guilty when I see how easy it is!! I enjoy your channel so much! Best wishes for a Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!!!
I love Potato Soup when me or my husband is sick. As for a favorite, I guess I have 2 favorites: Chicken & Dumplings and Beef Stew with vegetables! When I make Potato Soup I always dice up an onion! I have your Cookbooks & I love them! Thanks Tammy! Happy New Year to you and your family! NORMA COLLINS FROM TEXAS
I'm Dutch so we add onions and celery to our potato soup. We always make revals to thicken it it like a drop noodle. 1 egg and flour to make a sticky dough. And drop teaspoons in to the hot potato water to cook. Then add the cream and spices.
A good ole bowl of potato soup sounds good. I made a big pot of vegetable beef soup with some stew meat and cooked ground beef. It’s one of our favorites. Hope you and Chris have a wonderful Christmas and may the Lord bless you in this coming year.❤️✝️🎄
Everything I've fixed out of your cookbook has been amazing, like I had said some other time I've gotten back to cooking and baking again, watching you and listening you, it's given me an uplifting excitement and desire to cook and bake once again..love you and your enthusiasm it's contagious 💕
One of my favorites is potato soup, which I'm making tonight. I love the way you make it because it's truly the way my mama did with one exception. She added onions to the soup after the potatoes were ready. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Tammy this would be good for tonight. We in the polar vortex right now. Oh your Christmas apron is beautiful. Everything is better with bacon! My Gram and Mom made potato soup often. It would stick to your ribs nice and hearty. I’m going to try your recipe! Have a blessed Christmas. Love ya❤
This looks good! We made your chicken and dumplings for supper. Having light snacks and chips and dips now while waiting for Santa! Merry Christmas to you guys!
Of all the soups to be made, potato soup is my favorite! Make mine deluxe, just like yours…😉. Merry Christmas to you and Chris and the whole family!🎄🎄🎄
This year my son-in-law’s family decided for everyone to bring a soup to the gathering so we wound up actually since the men don’t cook with 7 soups. We had a tomato bisque, two vegetable beef, and four that were like they serve at Olive Garden those zuppa or whatever the name is. And something tortellini noodles. I really don’t care for those type soups from Olive Garden so I ate the vegetable soup and it was really good and I have a bowl of the tomato bisque for tomorrow. I think it’s a good idea to have different soups like that and try them to see if you actually like them. No potato soup girl I could eat that any day and vegetable beef soup. I could eat that about any day as long as they are homemade. I love your videos. Merry Christmas to you and Chris and I really enjoyed Paul fixing the caramel corn. He did a super job. He acts like he would be fun to be around. Merry Christmas. Love you aren’t you glad we have Jesus.??❤️🙏🏼🎁☃️🎄⛄️🎅🏻🎉
Merry Christmas to you and your family and everyone! Hope you have a blessed and magical Christmas weekend. Love & Prayers from a granny from Tennessee 💜 🙏 🌷 🎅 🤶 🎄 🎀 🎁
Very similar to how I make mine....only I add onion and garlic....along with a big dollop of sour cream before serving. 👍 Hope ya'll have a Merry Christmas! 🎄☃
That crispy bacon adds some texture. I love creamy potato soup but I also need something crunchy in it. It's like me needing salty chips or pretzels with my Reese cups or another very sweet treat. Contrast keeps my mouth happy. Have you tried adding scallions or chives? The green is pretty against all that light beige color and you still get onion flavor.
Hello from Mocksville, North Carolina!❤️. I wish I had the ingredients on hand to make this!!😋😋😋 We love potato soup!!😋❤️😋❤️😋 I hope you and your family have a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!! I love y'all ❤️
Tammy, I made tater soup last week. I’m so glad I watched this video. I left a step out. I just had a light bulb go off. Wonder how good it would be to make some country gravy and mix it with the potato water then add half and half as desired for thickness. Merry Christmas to you and Chris. Thank you for all your tips, tricks and fun. God be with you both.
We call it sister soup. My sister and I made it for each other when we were young. Any excuse to make it but especially if one was sick. She died 45 years ago but I still make it and think of her every time. Still so comforting.
((( hugs)))) what a wonderful way to remember her! ❤️💕
Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. I’m going to make this today. Thank you.

We do the exact same, except often with ham instead of bacon and add corn near the end. 😊
We will be having chilli for Christmas , We started this tradition a few years ago and everyone loves it and happily take some home for supper.
Potato soup from scratch deluxe version.. and my daughter loves it also. It saved us in a heavy snowstorm one year until we could get dug out when I had made an extra big pot the day before. This looks just wonderful! Merry Christmas! 🎄🎄🎄
Yummy! Make mine with half n half too. I use chicken broth, and I add sautéed onions and celery
I LOVE ME SOME TATER SOUP...ESPECIALLY THIS COLD WEATHER...THANKS FOR SPENDING TIME WITH US ON CHRISTMAS 🤶 EVE....MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YAL
THANK YOU TAMMY! LOOKS GREAT FOR THIS WINTER AND OF COURSE, WE EAT THIS ALL YEAR ROUND TOO! YOU ARE A SWEETHEART!
Thank you from remaking this video. I lost the old one and can't find it. It's my wife's absolute favorite and she just asked me to make it this week.

I'm a Georgia native and have been to your neck of the woods many times. Rockmart is a neat little town. My family is from Talking Rock.
My favorite soup of all time!

Same recipe I use, but I like to "mash" a bit of the potatoes right before serving...makes the soup thicker & soooo good!

🎄🎅Merry Christmas!🎅🎄
Very similar to how I make mine....only I add onion and garlic....along with a big dollop of sour cream before serving. 👍 Hope ya'll have a Merry Christmas! 🎄☃
Looks so delicious!! Happy Holidays 🎄 to you both!!
I dearly love taco soup. I’d love to see you make yours. Happy Holidays
I put a chopped onion in mine and lots of black pepper. Sometimes I put crumbled sausage. I'm definitely going to try the bacon in it
That crispy bacon adds some texture.
@@anakelly76512 I will try that. Thanks 👍
Love your videos. You and your husband certainly go together so sweetly. Have a Merry Christmas. Kris

Love me some potatoes soup my Mom made it mmmm
Tammy, I made tater soup last week. I’m so glad I watched this video. I left a step out. I just had a light bulb go off. Wonder how good it would be to make some country gravy and mix it with the potato water then add half and half as desired for thickness.
Merry Christmas to you and Chris. Thank you for all your tips, tricks and fun. God be with you both.
