The City and South London Railway (now part of the Northern Line) was originally narrow gauge, like the Glasgow Subway remained. London enlarged the tunnels in the 1920s I think. Jago Hazzard has covered the topic. I’ve followed the Glasgow Subway present and history closely for the 12 years Glasgow has been home, and other than entertaining consideration of closure as an option in part of the report to layout future options for the subway, don’t believe there has ever been an ounce of serious consideration of closure in recent times. So unless you’ve got a source on otherwise, or are referring back to 70s pre-modernisation, politely will say think that’s rubbish. It’s a great and unique system, but only so far in what it is; and it could be so much more if the ambition and investment were put into public transit in Glasgow.
@@matthewsmatters A previous RUclips video mentioned the possibility of closure before the initial modernization. So far plans to extend the system have come to nothing.

Many underground and commuter railway lines use even smaller (meter) gauge tracks & operate way larger rolling stock. It's got more to do with the tunnel size.
A good example of track gauge vs loading gauge is on the London Underground, comparing sub-surface trains and deep-level trains which run on the same track gauge but greatly differ in size
The track gauge is standard gauge, but the Glasgow tunnels are indeed tiny in diameter. The carriages literally cannot be bigger than they now are, unless somebody was to widen the tunnels

I really think they should introduce contactless debit card payments at the barrier and have Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) for added safety due to the narrowness of the platforms.
Actually, it's easier and more proficient to implement driverless operation on the Glasgow Subway than on the London Underground due to several reasons: - The Glasgow Subway is a very small network of only 15 stations and its platform layouts are mostly straight unlike the London Underground, so platform doors can be installed for such operations. Not to mention, it's signalling sysyem is pretty simple compared to most huge rail networks. - While the London Underground may have already introduced new Picadilly line trains that have the potential to be driverless, driverless operations are extremely unlikely due to being a huge network, a complex signalling system, the curved layout of numerous platforms makes it challenging to install platform doors, and various others. Even if driverless operation can be implemented, the cabs needed to remain with the driver doing other tasks inside for safety purposes (GoA3).
These subway trains are incredibly cute. I mean now that we've got the new subway trains its about time they expand the system or make the entirety of the stations accessible to wheelchair users.

It's one of the oldest railways in the world Opened in 1896 as cable hauled like San Francisco street cars the old wooden cars were converted to electric and ran until 1977 when the new now old trains replaced them. The old cars were lifted out by crane every night for servicing, there were no points on the system and the sheds on the surface.
A good design. It's pretty much equivalent to the new stockholm subway trains. Both look futuristic, but the glasgow tunnels are older and pipe shaped so the trains have to be round (i like it tho)
Hi David - I’m Irish myself, living in Manchester 21 years and have been fascinated by Glasgow’s metro system for a long time - from what little I know about this line, it resembles the Circle Line Tube in London and I’d love to see the DART Underground for Dublin taking shape - one thing that I do like about these trains is that there is enough room to carry a heavy suitcase on board (level boarding?) and I don’t know how similar they are to Edinburgh’s trams for disabled access to the island platforms - aside from the Metrolink Trams here in Manchester and the current London Tube Trains, it compares well to the DART Trains and the LUAS Trams in Dublin - does the Glasgow Metro get very busy at peak hours? And what major bus/tram/rail connections is it close to? Does it have good interchange points within Glasgow City Centre?
Buchanan Street and St Enoch subway stations are the best connected as they are a few steps away from Glasgow Queen Street, Glasgow Central, all the bus routes that run through the area, plus Buchanan Bus Station. Outside of the city centre, Partick is its own wee hub in the west end, with a subway station below ground, a bus hub at street level, and an elevated railway station. The subway does get busy at peak times. Not London busy, but busy enough as it connects the busy city centre with the busy west end. It also gets crowded on game days at Ibrox. Unfortunately as of yet only two subway stations are wheelchair accessible. But keep in mind, the subway is a very small system. Buses, cars and trains are the main way to get around Glasgow, in fact the city has the second largest urban rail network in Britain after London, albeit with a lot of room for improvement.
They usually start with lines going between the center and areas where many people live. When the city grows that overloads the central station, so they build circles with interchanges. If the city is in a flat and boring landscape, the metro network will look like a spider web. I don't know why they started with a circle and then stopped here. Shenanigans were definitely involved.
Things i hate about the new rolling stock is there is no announcement if there is it sounds like conductor making it. Like we need clear announcement bruh.
Got to St Enoch at about 18.45 yesterday, no new trains in the 4 or so I waited on :( (if they did leave service, I feel bad for the couple at Bridge St c. 7pm who had cameras at the ready...)
Coming from San Francisco, these new carriages are quite spiffy. Still bewildered as to why air conditioning amazes you lot. Our trains have had it since the 60s and it doesn’t get much hotter here in the Bay Area compared to greater London.(London is actually more humid, thus I’d want air con more if I lived there). On the opposite front, our new carriages mean to serve the railway for 30 years were just delivered, and they have no open gangways.
San Francisco's dew point is higher than London for most of the time. London being quite humid is only in relative terms; aka relative humidity, not in dew points.

Does anyone know how the Glasgow Subway trains speed an acceleration compares to say a deep level Tube (London Underground) such as the Jubilee line?
They look pretty nice. Shame they aren't tardises. haha. Well done for beating Mr Marshall to it! I guess it helps to be local :)
It’s a local train for local people.

Shame they weren't operating when I tried to ride them.
I wonder if there is any other subway system that only goes around in a circle.
The new trains are indergoing driver facilitation on the Tyne & Wear Metro for our new Alstrom trains
Class 555's are Stadler
@@emjackson2289 are they really, in that case I was misinformed in a previous video
Now that's a Tube
exactly what I thought to see. Is it much quieter from inside now, right? Looks like it runs quieter from outside too. And starts faster
Look great but wish they were still predominately orange. I remember when the previous ones were at the design stage and loved them.
It feels as good as the Piccadilly line new train
Things i hate about the new rolling stock is there is no announcement if there is it sounds like conductor making it. Like we need clear announcement bruh.
squeezed London overground in a tube )))
Do they have a automatic next station announcement system?
Not at the minute, though I suspect they’ll be brought in later down the line.
The front lights of these trains look like katana blades
Finally!! 🎉
where is the motor sound?
I forget always that you have traffic on the left. Also the trains
lovely trains but that alarm before the doors open is bloody horrible
These trains remind of the central line trains, the central line trains need something like this
These new trains look fantastic, but the whole system STILL closes at 6pm on a Sunday! Come on, SPT!
They want you to go home and watch netflix and go to bed
Glasgow needs new Subway lines, though built to more heavy rail dimensions
Got to St Enoch at about 18.45 yesterday, no new trains in the 4 or so I waited on :( (if they did leave service, I feel bad for the couple at Bridge St c. 7pm who had cameras at the ready...)
So funny, I was 10 mins after you waiting at st Enoch too 😂
Coming from San Francisco, these new carriages are quite spiffy.
Today I found out that Glasgow has a subway.
OMG I thought it was going to be realised on 2025
Interesting video, is Glasgow quite a nice friendly city compared to English cities? Never been
