Hi Geoff. Just a reminder that the Copenhagen Metro system is driverless aswell, and has been for quite a few years actually 😁 maybe you should visit one day.
Copenhagen Metro has platform screen doors though. Not sure how they could add that into the Glasgow subway and it seems like a hard requirement for a driverless system. I'll be impressed, in any case, if they manage to make it work with the narrow, curved platforms.
@@liamness curve platforms isn't a problem, lots of curve platforms on the Elizabeth line, it just means the doors have to be custom built for that platform, that feasible for a small network like that, doing it for the whole of the underground would cost billions.
@@liamness The nuremberg metro doesn't have platform doors even on their driverless lines. So it's not really a hard requirement, it's just the much better solution. Not needed as Glasgow has such a large overground network with over 150 stations. To put things into perspective, Edinburgh has less than 10 train stations.
Gordon Mackay mentioned the pumps for the sumps. There's over 20 of them round the network to pump out the water that seeps into the tunnels from various sources. Myself and a colleague compiled all the Operation & Maintenance Manuals for these Sump Pump Sets.
Gordon reminded me of an ex Glaswegian I worked with. He hated making public speeches at our church where he was the head of the "Finance and Maintenance" committee. He always gave his report in his thickest accent possible. I was the only one who actually understood him so I provided a running translation for him. He appreciated my ability to understand him and brought me on to his committee. I still don't know why they couldn't understand him. One guy who had problems was from Edinburgh.
I love the old Subway. I haven't had a chance to ride the new trains but they look less comfortable, too bright and the fact it's all one big train could mean it's noisier... Hopefully I'll get to ride it soon and make a proper judgement then.

The major population centres should at the very least, like Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds etc. I'd love a subway network around Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds all linked up with our own "Crossrail" heavy commuter line like the Liz line that connects them all up.
