  • Nathan Cheung plays Akira Yuyama's Birthday Cake from Confections: A Piano Sweet (お菓子の世界) written in 1972.
I was introduced to this work by pianist-composer-improviser, Yoshiko Arahata (www.yoshikoarahata.com/). This short piece comes from a collection of pieces that have become a part of the piano pedagogical culture in Japan. Birthday Cake features characteristics of Classical era composers and depicts a sense of calm and joy. A fantastic doctoral essay on the whole collection and more of Akira Yuyama's music has been written by Dan Sato. It can be read here: scholarship.miami.edu/esploro...
Recorded and edited by Jacob Warren in Auer Hall on June 4, 2022 at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. www.jacobvwarren.com/

Great playing as always Nathan! Never heard of this piece before but I'm really glad I discovered it now, it's so serene 🎶
