The original design intent of fortnite was so awesome and unique. It hurts so bad seeing how its declined into a dull and corporate mess, making the artstyle as lifeless and barebones as possible just to accommodate the overwhelming number of collabs. Great video.
Much of this video's idea was based off of a GDC talk in 2018 called "Developing the Art of Fortnite." It's genuinely insane to go from that hour-long speech about how they managed to come up with a perfect art style for a game that was very much a passion project for Epic at the time to literally any of the more recent seasons. I hope this video managed to convey that contrast of emotion in some way
YES i agree i used to be excited for collabs but now i couldn't care less its becoming more like Roblox and less like Fortnite its lost its identity and these collabs are becoming corporate and overwhelming
I really miss the old art style, I really hate that fortnite is being used as a test bed for the unreal engine... also GOD PLEASE BRING BACK ENVIRONMENTAL STORY TELLING! GIVE PLAYERS REASON TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THE MAPS AGAIN
This video released before Chapter 2 Remix so I honestly forgot that most of the interiors from back then used Chapter 1 props. In hindsight that might be one of the most glaring flaws with this video, but Chapter 2 still marked a shift in direction through the new props that came with it and they would only continue to redesign old assets with the release of each new chapter. Anyhow thanks for taking the time to comment, much appreciated :D
Playing since Chapter 1 Season 3 , I have long accepted Fortnite has just become a collab hellscape where nothing makes sense. It really says about Epic's aimless nature with where they want to take this game when there's a alleged leak of a permanent Chapter 1 OG mode coming out alongside Chapter 6. Chapter 5 was such a boring era of Fortnite that I feel like Epic thinks the only way to keep players attention is to constantly go back to the good old days, instead of wondering why said good old days was fun to begin with
Yea I've seen a lot of people discussing the same general topic that this video covers and with Remix coming out since I published this one I definitely think a lot of them are right to say that it doesn't seem like Epic can get behind the fact many of us like (or for many of us used to like) Fortnite for the charm that the game inherently had. Here's hoping we get more creative and fun ideas that aren't tied solely to crazy collaborations.
I feel like the reason they're going back to the "good old days" Is because the Fortnite community is pulling a whole "Pokemon Black and White" situation, were getting mad about all of this new stuff, that there wasn't enough old fortnite content, and to bring back the old Fortnite via I think, And when Epic Games does that, now everyone is mad because Old fortnite was being milked to death and they miss the times where old fortnite wasn't milked... Sorry for bad english.... But the Fortnite community cannot be pleased for some reason 😭 (or atleast that's what I'm seeing)
As an artist and character design enthusiast, there's something so fun about different skins in Fortnite. The original art style was unique and quirky and interesting by the looks of it. its reminiscent of ToonTown and other games in that genre. There are still some elements in the modern skins, like the larger, blocky hands and fingers and the way the eyes are proportioned to the head and face. I do hate seeing the change from unique art style to bland corporate schlock, but it's just like the spread of minimal brand logos. I do think the goofiness remains in squads consisting of spiderman, snoopdogg, renegade raider and goku, but i think they could have gone in a better direction when it came to using UE. there's no need to change your artstyle, just push the game to its limits without making changes (i have no comments on gameplay since I just started playing this chapter.) And the only reason colaborations keep happening is because the main demographic of fortnite is still kids, kids who can ask their parents for money to get the new juicewrld skin and the new Nike shoes that theyre selling
Idk I thought season 9 was pretty good. The intro cutscene to the season of Peely and Jonesy in the bunker just encapsulates what Fortnite use to be like. It was season X for me where it got lost
I used to absolutely love fortnite. I started in chapter one season four or five, and i’d play it every day for hours on my nintendo switch. I got pretty good, and I had so much fun playing with friends, making new friends, and even playing alone, and the skins and maps and artstyle made it even better, and I loved it, even in chapter 2. Unfortunately I was younger during that time and don’t remember much, but I do have some screenshots at least. When the sweats started multiplying and people getting better, along with the addition of bot lobbies, the “skill based matchmaking” aspect kind of faded away, especially since i have autism and have been struggling with my hand-eye coordination as i’ve gotten older, and since i only played on a switch at the time i couldn’t really get better with everyone else since i was limited, even though i was considered pretty good for a nintendo player. Fortnite honestly lost its character and spark after chapter 2 season 5, and honestly isn’t really all that fun to play anymore since it became so repetitive and focused on the story and mass producing skins and collaborations and making changes to “keep the game fresh” as it evolved, but it honestly killed it for me. I haven’t played it in almost a year, and I doubt I will for a while, and if i do I won’t play much, since it truly isn’t fun or worth my time anymore. Fortnite truly fell off (in my opinion) and it’s simply not the same, and never will be again.

Oh hey! I think I started working on this video shortly before you posted yours, I thought your thumbnail was awesome and almost took some inspiration with an older concept for the thumbnail on this video! It's super interesting to see so many people have a burst of revelation regarding Fortnite's art style and otherwise nostalgia surrounding the game at the same time, although I guess it's no surprise given Chapter 2 remix was known to be planned for release this month. Thanks for the comment, hope you're doing well!

It would be cool if instead of doing challenges around the map and getting 15 seconds of dialogue after placing two random objects at loosely correlated locations as a means of getting Fortnite lore, we did playable cinematics every week (kinda like the c2s6 event, but not as big) like you have to do an actual train heist with jonesy and hope against the society (c5s1 storyline), playing out like a cod mission, and you will get xp based on better performance (DCBAS ranking). It would definitely give a much needed break to the repetitiveness of Fortnite’s other modes whilst giving a more engaging why of storytelling.

12:07 DJ Bop sighting in the wild Also, everything in Chapter 4 except for Wilds was actually fire and Chapter 4 has one of the best track records despite the blemish that is Wilds. Chapter 5 Season 3 was amazing as well. I'm tired of modern fortnite getting dogged on for not being "og". The core of a game was still there, there were additions that kept things fresh and active. Wrecked was absolutely one of our best seasons, taking the balanced gunplay from Fortnite and adding more content to play and experiment with. People who complain about the cars ignore the EMPs + Boogie Bombs and people who cry about fists ignore every nerf they got. Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 3 was absolutely some of the most wild and fun gaming I've ever had in my life. Saying that it changed the core is simply wrong, it's coming from an angle that expects more of the same. Chapter 2 became entirely stale and was more or less a cancer to Fortnite that even led into Chapter 3, a total nothing-burger that overall had 5 standout skins: The Foundation (the Rock's Fortsona), Meow Skulls and Darth Vader, Spider-man and Indiana Jones, 4 of those skins are branded and 1 of them is a gooner skin. Fortnite only started to get good again in Chapter 4. Fortnite Season 2 Chapter 4 was the last overall good season of that chapter before everybody started to get tired for the last 4 chapters. Nobody cared about it and the game nearly fell off entirely because of it. We need to stop ignoring that.
I didn't discuss Chapter 4 much since this video mostly focused on CH1, CH2 and CH5 but I REALLY enjoyed Chapter 4. Definitely underrated fr. Wrecked was either really bad or really awesome depending on your viewpoint, I personally had a good bit of fun with it myself but it's hard to deny that they largely changed the core gameplay for that season. Thanks for the comment! :)
I really wish fortnite stuck with making their own style for the collab skins like compare the black widow or star lord skin with the skins today if those were released today it would just be chris pratt
Dude honestly the fact you don't get enough credit for your videos is just sad. This editing style is amazing and your scripts are perfect. It sucks that you don't get enough views for your video.
Hey thanks! I've only started making larger video 'essays' (overused term I know) this year so I'm certainly grateful for all the attention they've received so far. I hope you'll stick around for whatever is next, thanks for the comment! :)
I don’t mind collabs, but I’m not a fan of having actual skins. I’m a fan for Fortnite skins and Fortnite skins that mimics others, like The Reaper skin was supposed to be their version of John Wick, Valor was like a Fortnite version of Wonder Woman. The battle pass should’ve kept in line with that. And if they were to have actual collab skins, make them rare and put them in the shop not the fucking battle pass.
RocketRidge thinks he's FUNKe... Now you just gotta get into SFM and create a cool character and animate him with low framerate. Jokes aside, good video.
as much as i laughed at 19:59, it really makes you realize how bloated and over the top fortnite has become. as someone who pre-ordered STW and recently just reinstalled the game, there's so many different art styles all in one game that it's almost nauseating to think about. and sadly fortnite's original artstyle gets lost in the corporate collab slurry. i think the video's great and really shows how far fortnite has gotten from its original vision.
Really enjoyed the video. My whole family has played Fortnite since the first chapter, and we really miss the aesthetics and character of old Fortnite. None of us are fans of collab seasons, so we’ve pretty much been playing Rewind Royale while waiting for Chapter one to come back.
Started playing near the end of chapter 1 season 4 and fully goes into it with buying BP for season 5 (this is why Drift is my fav skin). Played until chapter 1 season 8, then quit on season 9. Then, after a while, i came back around chapter 4? (Where have the Miss X (the one with either blue or red colour and orange pants) Played for one season, and it was alright, but quit after that, so yeah. The new chapter doesn't seem that interesting compared to precious atleast but that might just be me
yeah bro, i think we got so overstimulated with all the stuff theyre adding that nothing really stands out anymore and its just one big overwhelming mess
Fortnite has became the biggest game for product placement, like with Marvel's characters and whoever else is in the game now. You know those series of paintings from that artist with dementia that drew himself a lot before the last couple of drawings looked so different and odd that it no longer looks like the artist? That's what Fortnite is now (to me atleast). I'm glad that they're trying to make it so battle passes from seasons ago would make a return, but I feel like it's maybe four or five years too late.
I thought you were gonna go somewhere with the part of the dev team having 1/3 of a year in chapter 2 season 2 (or 3, I forgot which). where you’d say that the dev teams just don’t have enough time to find or make something fun for the community anymore since the chapters are so short now. not criticizing or whatever but I just thought you’d mention something along those lines since that was what I was thinking you were leading on to
I did come back around to this point toward the event of the video but yea I think the main problem with their development cycle atm is being forced to include collaborations into gameplay, and because they have so little time to work with they end up pouring most of their resources into these collaborations instead of a mix of both collabs and original concepts unique to Fortnite, what happens is that those concepts we do end up getting are never fully fleshed out by the end of a season and end up falling flat as a result of devs being sweeped up for one of various mid-season collaborations on top of actually creating the next season. That's just my suspicion though.
Personlly i think og fortnite was before season 2, the battlepass and the game overall started to rot. I miss og fortnite its a pity the mode will be playable the first month... 😢
I thought this was an art style video but 3/4 were about collaborations? Also you can have dark colors and grit like Ch4 and still be cartoony, that would be the best of both worlds no one actually thinks neon green grass looks nice.
The BR mode will never go away, it makes way too much money and always has the most of the player base. As for the Fortnitemares seasons, those were disruptive, everyone and their mothers would complain. This latest one was without a doubt the best as it had more than enough for people to sink their teeth into. As for the characters and layouts, it's really nothing big enough to be scared of. I do agree the artstyle has been a bit lax, look at the JuiceWorld skin, it's just him. I miss the cartoony look to everything. Funny enough C4 had that in spades, especially during S2. It was a nice mix of realistic and over saturated cartoon aesthetics.
@@RocketRidge My dude I loved C4 more than OG, and I've been here since STW days. Not that OG was bad, I just preferred C4. The movement, the guns (the red eye wasn't that great though, Twin Mag AR was peak), art style and augments I adored. If we had a chance to go back to those days, I'd be there in a heartbeat with no complaints. Was such an underrated Chapter, it's what got me back into FN after I stopped playing for years. Aside from S3 that was... yeah.
If you don't like it then quit. There are 100s of other games out there. Plus, nobody is forcing you to buy collabs. If you don't like something don't spend money on it and just ignore it. Complaining is literally useless
Honestly something I've been thinking recently regarding fortnite is that some collabs are pretty distasteful (I suppose you could call it) Prime example being the recent fortnightmares (or whatever it's called) it features (as you mentioned) a Saw skin, which keep in mind, Saw is a franchise known for featuring some very violent and graphic scenes (self-mutilation, torture etc) and I just find it quite distasteful to include such crossovers especially in a game which has a decent portion of players below 13 years old.
Definitely an interesting thought, although they have been adding similar skins like that since Chapter 2. It's just silly how they're trying to appeal to every audience at once but also make certain maps impossible to play as with skins like the new Saw one or those with ammunition and whatnot because they're 13+ concepts. Truly you'd just be better off playing Roblox or other games in that same vein like VRChat instead, still it's awesome that people can at least try to make a livelyhood off of Fortnite maps now lol.
Honestly I'm really excited for it, I just hope they don't turn it into an ad spot... otherwise it's a step into removing the limited-time nature of chapters/seasons in Fortnite which honestly feels like the end-game of Epic's hand in keeping Fortnite an actively updated game. I suppose we'll have to see what happens though, here's hoping the new chapter is fun because it is peak Fortnite and not because it has a bunch of random collaborations thrown into it.
Honestly I feel chapter 2 was the last time I felt that they had that cartoony art style now everything is just too basic like compare the scar from chapter 1-2 to chapter 5 its night and day
ROCKET PRICK VIDEO, AND NO COMMENTS? LET. ME. FIX THAT. Also, I found fortnite when i was 11 on the first release of the battle royale, 2 days after its release i think
18:05 people didn't rank wilds based on natural colors... it you played then, you'd know it's because it was boring. Unethical to use that poll to make your point
Now ch6 will bring back the art style that looks like Fortnite thankfully because the skybox of ch6 was leaked and it looks beautiful and the skybox of ch6 is a mix of cartoony and realism
Collaborations are the only reason this game still has a playerbase. I myself only got back into it from stopping in chapter 1 because of the TMNT collab
I hate realistic looking games and always have, and I fear fortnite is getting too close to that realism, chapter 6 looks like it might be slightly more cartoony than chapter 5 but still not far enough
I got into fornite during ch1 s0 just because all of my other gamer xbox friends were playing it. Then ninja played with drake and the game got super popular
Its not nostalgia blindness anymore, its very visible of how the game lost it charm with these recent seasons, Fortnite now is more of a product of ads than a game at this moment.
Honestly, just lend Fortnite to the community, it feels like the community itself nows what's better for Fortnite than Epic Games themselves, FN isn't as fun anymore, it doesn't have the same feeling when a new chapter drops, doesn't have a fresh feeling when graphics change, the collabs just feel bland and just to make money, the story was completely abandoned since Chapter 3 season 3 imo and with Donald Mustard having left Epic Games, it feels like like Fortnite's downfall is happening now
why can't you just accept that fortnite is now this and not the game you used to play and if you can't really stand it don't play it then nobody forces you and there are a lot of games out there
Fortnite has always been an extremely unique game and one that I love dearly even despite its many, MANY flaws. Even though I'm burnt out of BR I've been having some fun revisiting Save the World recently. Most videos in this style I find are from those who have passion for a game or a community and want to see it improve. I think such criticism is warranted and even necessary in most cases when it comes to larger games so that developers can get a valuable consensus of what their communities want to see reworked/improved. The more the merrier, provided that nothing is taken too far and turned into a campaign of harassment or whatever.
I had a lot of fun with this one, even if I put way too much time into it lol. I had to take a break half-way through for the anniversary video and I think that helped this one reach its full potential.

i found out about fortnite from my friend who was playing back at season 5 chapter 1 and i started playing pretty cool thinking how everyone started
I've been playing since season 2 but now whenever I hear the old og music all I hear is metro
And if they were to have actual collab skins, make them rare and put them in the shop not the fucking battle pass.
cry
RocketRidge thinks he's FUNKe...
Now you just gotta get into SFM and create a cool character and animate him with low framerate.
Jokes aside, good video.
as much as i laughed at 19:59, it really makes you realize how bloated and over the top fortnite has become. as someone who pre-ordered STW and recently just reinstalled the game, there's so many different art styles all in one game that it's almost nauseating to think about. and sadly fortnite's original artstyle gets lost in the corporate collab slurry. i think the video's great and really shows how far fortnite has gotten from its original vision.
STW is the last left of what Fortnite use to be
I tried playing yesterday and it gave me a headache looking at all those different art styles and menus full of collabs ugh
that egg hunt 2018 bslick banger really hit hard
You're an absolute legend for recognizing that one.
i miss how dark and stw-escqe fortnite used to be and look
I loved rewind royal then i got ezfn and wow it made me feel like a kid again
ion even play fortnite but this video rocks
Glad you enjoyed it! :D
very good vid, will you be releasing one for the upcoming permanent C1 OG mode?
I don't solely make Fortnite videos but if I enjoy it I'll probably end up hosting a livestream on it at some point!
OK change of plans, its out lol ruclips.net/video/2IC9y4oFJio/видео.htmlsi=O_jxlXS25NVOU4wj
Really enjoyed the video. My whole family has played Fortnite since the first chapter, and we really miss the aesthetics and character of old Fortnite. None of us are fans of collab seasons, so we’ve pretty much been playing Rewind Royale while waiting for Chapter one to come back.
10:49 The horse armor moment for Fortnite
Started playing near the end of chapter 1 season 4 and fully goes into it with buying BP for season 5 (this is why Drift is my fav skin). Played until chapter 1 season 8, then quit on season 9.
Then, after a while, i came back around chapter 4? (Where have the Miss X (the one with either blue or red colour and orange pants) Played for one season, and it was alright, but quit after that, so yeah. The new chapter doesn't seem that interesting compared to precious atleast but that might just be me
Also played alot of STW during chapter 1 too but also quit after they drop the support for it (sad tbh)
Save the World getting canceled after Chapter 2 released is a true tragedy
16:10 is this the roblox 2018 egg hunt music? made me nostalgic
Indeed it is !
Good thing I started Fortnite chapter two season 4 because I don’t think I would be playing this game if I missed og spiderman
yeah bro, i think we got so overstimulated with all the stuff theyre adding that nothing really stands out anymore and its just one big overwhelming mess
I pre-ordered Fortnite like the 100 dollar edition it came with two codes for the save the world
there s no light without dark if every season was simillar to chapter 1 and 2 we gonna get bored from it eventually
For me ch 1 season 7 is when fortnite felt "different" idk how to describe it but it was weird
It definitely was one of my favorite seasons!
people keep saying “og graphics” if anything its “og artstyle” lmao
16:19 u said "the first chapter of season 3"
The roblox egg hunt 2018 music at 15:11 🤩
Personlly i think og fortnite was before season 2, the battlepass and the game overall started to rot. I miss og fortnite its a pity the mode will be playable the first month... 😢
Yk why it’s cause kids wanna be older now tbh acting hood
C4S2 was some of the best Fortnite we've gotten in ages! Always great to see another C4 Enthusiast :)
Aside from S3 that was... yeah.
I will really watch anything Fortnite related 😂😂
Like how did I get here 😂
If you don't like it then quit. There are 100s of other games out there. Plus, nobody is forcing you to buy collabs. If you don't like something don't spend money on it and just ignore it. Complaining is literally useless
Honestly something I've been thinking recently regarding fortnite is that some collabs are pretty distasteful (I suppose you could call it)
Prime example being the recent fortnightmares (or whatever it's called) it features (as you mentioned) a Saw skin, which keep in mind, Saw is a franchise known for featuring some very violent and graphic scenes (self-mutilation, torture etc) and I just find it quite distasteful to include such crossovers especially in a game which has a decent portion of players below 13 years old.
STFU looks like someone wasn’t allowed to watch rated r movies at 13
1:30 they abandoned the creepy art direction in 2011
How do you feel about Chapter 1 coming back permanently next month?
Honestly I'm really excited for it, I just hope they don't turn it into an ad spot... otherwise it's a step into removing the limited-time nature of chapters/seasons in Fortnite which honestly feels like the end-game of Epic's hand in keeping Fortnite an actively updated game. I suppose we'll have to see what happens though, here's hoping the new chapter is fun because it is peak Fortnite and not because it has a bunch of random collaborations thrown into it.
🎉🎉🎉good glug
YOO APPRECIATED SILVERGAREN
Hopefully Chapter 6’s graphics will not be more realistic than Chapter 5 (even though they might do it)
graphics cant stay the same forever
Honestly I feel chapter 2 was the last time I felt that they had that cartoony art style now everything is just too basic like compare the scar from chapter 1-2 to chapter 5 its night and day
Listen to him he's good at the video game he knows what's up
ILL 2V1 YOU ALL! COME 'ERE BOY! YOUR TOES ARE MINE!

ROCKET PRICK VIDEO, AND NO COMMENTS? LET. ME. FIX THAT. Also, I found fortnite when i was 11 on the first release of the battle royale, 2 days after its release i think
15:42 egg hunt 2018
14:34 erm, that was actually tntina 🤓☝️
Moooonnneeeeeeyyyyy!
9:50 a HOT cat with muscles mind you
Weirdo. It's a cat. Not HOT. A cat Shane Dawson 2.0 over here.
agreed
Fornite ended on Chapter 2 season 2
No chapter 3 season3 is when fortnite ended, aka when Donald quit.
Nothing about the artstyle changed after season 2 for the rest of chapter 2
Cap, it ended on season og
new artstyle is awsome in its own ways yall are just nostalgic warhorses
18:05 people didn't rank wilds based on natural colors... it you played then, you'd know it's because it was boring. Unethical to use that poll to make your point
thsi reminds ne of when i was n then the happen 😦
Man you’re gonna HATE Chapter 2 Remix
The loot pool of Chapter 2 is unbeatable but yea it's just not the same haha
Now ch6 will bring back the art style that looks like Fortnite thankfully because the skybox of ch6 was leaked and it looks beautiful and the skybox of ch6 is a mix of cartoony and realism
collaborations genuinely ruined this game
Its definitely a wholly new beast compared to what it once was, for better and very much for worse
While I love playing as boba fett and the ninja turtles, I agree. Its way too much
Collaborations are the only reason this game still has a playerbase. I myself only got back into it from stopping in chapter 1 because of the TMNT collab
17:38 how did the primal season rank as one of the lowest? The Shockwave bow was peak movement
I hate realistic looking games and always have, and I fear fortnite is getting too close to that realism, chapter 6 looks like it might be slightly more cartoony than chapter 5 but still not far enough
At least they're reversing the direction the art style is going in :p
Make a video on forced crossplay

🤓
Dress to impress is better
I got into fornite during ch1 s0 just because all of my other gamer xbox friends were playing it. Then ninja played with drake and the game got super popular
Its not nostalgia blindness anymore, its very visible of how the game lost it charm with these recent seasons, Fortnite now is more of a product of ads than a game at this moment.
👍
Hot take but I rlly don’t mind it being more realistic now, and I played in og chapter 1/2.
17:48
Nigga they were based on the gameplay and not the color no1 gaf about color😭😭😭😭
You never know bruh 🙏
Honestly, just lend Fortnite to the community, it feels like the community itself nows what's better for Fortnite than Epic Games themselves, FN isn't as fun anymore, it doesn't have the same feeling when a new chapter drops, doesn't have a fresh feeling when graphics change, the collabs just feel bland and just to make money, the story was completely abandoned since Chapter 3 season 3 imo and with Donald Mustard having left Epic Games, it feels like like Fortnite's downfall is happening now
Complain complain complain all y’all do is complain
'Tis the tale of the Emperor Lemon.
Foytnite
Good video but I can’t stand your voice bro
Glad you enjoyed it anyway lol
why can't you just accept that fortnite is now this and not the game you used to play and if you can't really stand it don't play it then nobody forces you and there are a lot of games out there
Fortnite has always been an extremely unique game and one that I love dearly even despite its many, MANY flaws. The more the merrier, provided that nothing is taken too far and turned into a campaign of harassment or whatever.
art style is still good what are you talking about keep crying
It's dull now and boring
What's so good about it? It's another realistic bland artstyle it's not unique by any means
but then therthen unrealy i hav wondershippe over unrealygamesis to hav a nices day this has ben the hads fo god
