One thing missing from the how to budget video is how to get a starting point for variable expenses. I printed 3 months of bank statements and wrote out everything I spent and categorized it. This helped me successfully start budgeting for the first time ever at 50.

We don't need to budget since my husband has a very good handle on our finances, but something you said really struck a cord.
