They tried to force humour so much that the villian became joker himself, Gorr is a GOD BUTCHER, he is a GOD BUTCHER, he is supposed to be serious, calculated, cold, fast, strong, like a vengeful beast, not a sinister, psychopathic frail man, and honestly, i don't feel anything for him from the start to the end, the starting scene lasted for like 2 min of his hugging his dead daughter and that's all we saw of gorr's backstory, like at least show us how his people died, show us his wife, let us at least feel sorry for him. Taikiti basically made everyone except thor himself a total joke, gorr has the necrosword, perhaps the strongest weapon in the entire universe, sure thor's hammer is strong but the necrosword is supposed to be stronger, apparently gorr is supposed to get stronger everytime he kills gods, yes, fresh out of the gate gorr would have been demolished by thor, but gorr is supposed to have killed many gods by this point, look at his battlescars, but hey, taikiti wanted to make gorr weak and frail and in the movie, Zeus says his only killed low level gods, but he was able to somehow subdue thor, jane, valkyrie, and could have killed them all, and in the end fight, gorr somehow lost all his braincells and forgot how to use his shadow realm powers to go in and out of the shadow, he literally forgot about his powers, so gorr, whose strength rivals thor himself, is going around only killing low level gods? Gorr is strong and weak at the same time, i don't think i have seen a villian that is so poorly executed, like at times, his as strong as thor, other times, his weak as fuck. Anyways, all the great things that could have came from the necrosword is out of the window now, the supposedly strongest weapon has somehow became a joke, the GOD butcher is a frail man, basically joker who goes around killing only low level gods? But at times his as strong as thor? so idk man, i'll be completely honest here, taikiti just wants to make his own standalone movie, he doesn't care about the mcu, he doesn't know what the fans want, Gorr's iconic look from the comics, he looks like a proper monster, ay man, who the fuck cares about that, ahahahaha. Hey, Jane Foster, the mighty thor, WHO THE FUCK CARES, just give her cancer and kill her off. OH, gorr had a son in the comics? Who the fuck cares, let's based this whole movie to set up for THor's daughter debut into the MCU, who cares about jane, who cares about valkyrie, who cares about gorr the GOD butcher, honestly, this movie could have been 5 min long, show the beginning, and cut to the end straight away of thor being with his daughter, because honestly, that's all the movie is about, it's all about LOVE guys, it's all about LOVE, hey, LOVE can't save Jane thoooo lololo.....

To me, the film had interesting themes that were left unexplored. The idea of uncaring and unfit gods is shown, but not explored, nor the idea of what it means to be a god, or godworthy. Gor and his grief and was touched on, but the idea behind losing faith in all gods and any hope of an afterlife is passed over. Thor looking up to larger gods who turn out to be dead beats, while thor is actually living as more of a god who actually helps people is left on the floor. There are others themes, but you get my point. Just how I feel though. Overall the film was fun enough.

7/10 is generous. all three of you gave it a 7 while saying "eh. I'm being generous." It's a 6/10. I watched it once. I felt it cared more about sketch comedy than telling a story. When it did try to "get serious," it almost snapped my neck with the transition between 30 seconds of seriousness sandwiched between 30 minutes of sketch comedy. Hemsworth's chemistry with Hiddleson and their Odd Couple routine was sorely lacking with the replacement co-stars of Valkyrie and Jane. Gorr was an afterthought, subordinated by the comedy sketches. The movie was watchable. But there's zero story and zero reason to ever rewatch it. (I've rewatched Ragnarok about 10x). I've only see Guardians of the Galaxy more often. I'd go 2.5/5. 3/5 on a good day.

This movie felt like an SNL skit of a thor movie for most of it but the jokes don’t land as well as it did in Ragnarok. It’s almost cringe. Too many jokes and not enough time to sit in serious dramatic moments that wouldve meant more if it had more room to breath. Plot and story felt very rushed and we got to things with characters that don’t feel earned. The emotional beats dont make you feel the way it should. Christian Bale deserved better for sure. He was amazing as Gorr and needed more screentime to show more of his story, character and him actually butchering Gods but it kind of felt out of place in this more comedic movie. It was like if Heath Ledger as Joker in terms of performance and story was thrown into a SNL sketch. There were no stakes really. Watched Ragnarok right before Love and Thunder and Ragnarok had a way better balance between jokes, drama, story, and character development. And the jokes in Ragnarok landed way better than in Love and Thunder. The theatre i went to only had a big laugh the first time the goats came in and screamed but that was really it. I really didnt like Thors character or his arc much in Love and Thunder, its like when he went to SNL to do skits of Thor. Thors best trilogy and story arc is between Ragnarok, Infinity War, and Endgame.
I know phase 4 is like phase 1 and is supposed to set up bigger plots but this movie should still stand on its own and it doesn’t to me.

This whole phase has just been an attempt to insert woke idealism into a “popular platform” and it’s not been going well. Especially when you consider the one movie that did extremely well, SpiderMan: No Way Home, didn’t do any of that and decided to carter to the actual fans.

Fuckin hate it. Christian Bale out acted EVERY SINGLE person on that call sheet. And they WASTED IT. His character was the only one who was intriguing. When he was on screen he stole it away from everyone else. If there was to be a serious Thor film, this should have been it. It deals with serious, deep, contemplative questions about God, atheism, nihilism etc. That could have been great. But inevitably the answer to Gorr's nihilism is a Christian one. So we can't do that, let's be a slapstick 2 bit comedy that removes all weight. Janes story of her cancer could have been another great mix to the seriousness of Gorr. Taika waky waky sucks. He's overrated, one trick pony who has killed Thor. I liked Ragnarok. But, the best Thor wasn't his. It was Infinity War and Endgame. A very somber, serious, self reflective funny. Not a big buffoon. Anyone who is even vaguely familiar with the comic run involving Gorr knows what this film was supposed to be. It's seriously one of the darkest, most serious runs you can come across. The entire run is depicted as perilous for everyone who comes across Gorr. Aside from what the run itself describes, "off panel" it's implied that Gorr has been "at it" for a while. He's killed MANY "gods". At one point he even claims to have "tortured the god of torture". It takes multiple Thors including a few from other realities to finally take him down. An epic tale with heavy consequences.
Instead, we got the classic bait and switch. We got female Thor stealing the thunder (pun intended) and almost nothing even remotely close to how the actual run went. A mish mash of the same "female Thor" run that didn't sell the first time they tried it and the Gorr story. They made one of the darkest themed runs you could muster, and made it a bright rainbow filled g-a-y ass film that just has no purpose aside from "strong female". As usual, pandering to anyone and everyone aside from the actual fans that spend the money.

This makes me sad that they squandered the Gorr the God Butcher story arc so much. Like it took 3 Thor's in the comic to barely take him down and he did kill a bunch of gods. Like Gorr was next level sinister. I really wished they incorporated the multiverse aspect into the film and gave us 2 different versions of Thor or at least King Thor or at least brought in Hercules as well. Like less jokes and more lore friendly would have been much appreciated this time round.
And just to add. Why touch on such serious topics just to take the comedy way too far. Like could this not have been balanced as all things should be, between humor and seriousness. Thor 1 and 2 weren't amazing but they were more serious and it seems like this film needed more of that with the appropriate balance of comedy.

as jeremy jahns put it: "this movie felt like a MCU parody of thor", and that is just not good at all. Gorr should have been used much more in the movie (Bale was the best actor and they barely used him), the comedy toned way the hell down, and they should not have made thor into a literal dumbass and joke of a character. Watiti's Thor is just not it, Thor in Infinity War remains the best version of the character and how Thor should be.
now it wasn't all bad, such as how it's good they didn't make Jane this "got the hammer = instantly amazing and better than Thor in every single way" like in the awful comics version of this arc, Jane/Thor relationship worked in this, some cool shots/fights... but the movie was all over the place, rather rushed and clearly with a lot of scenes cut from the final edit. It says something when a lot of the actors were talking in interviews how "so many cool scenes were cut".

In my very honest opinion, this is the best phase 4 movie. I'm a person that truly doesn't care about pacing, if it's too slow or too fast or if it wasn't "dark enough" as some people say. I simply watch movies to be entertained and to positively obsess over, and we can't go wrong with the MCU.
This phase needed a strong movie that wasn't dark and sad. So I love everytime there was a joke, we needed to laugh with Marvel again, especially since 2018 with Infinity War, everything has taken a darker turn and we needed a break from it.
This movie certainly isn't better than Thor Ragnarok, it is better than Thor and Thor the Dark World (even though I love that movie, Frigga's funeral is surreal). I have to agree that Gorr should have been used more, if there is ever a director's cut, I would see it.
In the movie theater that I was watching the movie, the room was full, everyone laughed, everyone clapped, everyone left with a smile on their faces. Isn't that what we needed?

I expected this movie to be deeper in emotion like really exploring Thor his grieving and how he was going to get over it. We saw him so many times lose loved ones and all that was rushed through taika’s annoying narrating. There is something to be valued by “showing” instead “telling” the inner obstacles the character is overcoming. Every time the movie got serious taika’s direction ruined the moment, the jokes were not funny and if they were it became mundane by so many placed after it. Damn. Im pissed and not excited of what’s to come for Thor especially because this could’ve been a better movie that would help his character grow. Im just glad taika won’t be part of Thor any longer.

The problem for me is, Endgame and Love and Thunder have now cemented Thor's character assassination. Rather than have him resolve his arc as King like in the comics (like in the movies he didn't want to be King, he wanted to be an Avenger but that's the whole point of his growth and him maturing and learning to rule as the Allfather, something they robbed him of in the MCU), he passed it over to 'King' Valkryie the enslaver, for no reason other than 'to find himself' for the 50th fucking time. And that's now led on to him being in total and utter character limbo. Pissing around with the Guardians flying his axe like a broomstick? Now paired up with fucking Gorr's daughter of all people?? Still fighting random CGI bad guys by the end of the movie with no end arc resolution unlike Cap or Tony? Now he's regressed back to Mjolnir and being the God of hammers despite having since progressed to what Eitri called 'a king's weapon'? They need to right the wrongs of Endgame and Love and Thunder, make him King or just kill him off. He's absolutely going nowhere right now and hasn't for 2 movies straight since his brilliant arc in Infinity War.

I feel like if we got that extra 30min of Gorr in this film it would have lifted it to a solid 8/10 maybe 9 along with a couple of less re-used gags even though I did enjoy the gags. Would have liked to see more of Gorr in the first act to see him going on a rampage of actually being the god butcher. Build up the intensity of how powerful he was going to be to battle. And they could have maybe also used that time to explain a little more of how the sword was corrupting / possessing Gorr.

I'm a old Gen-X and grew up reading comic books and yes, I'm one of those guys who started collecting comic books in the mid 70's and my collection was way above average back then and even more so by today's market. It contained many early 60's to late 60's and so on with around 4000 to 5000 comic books and all 1st and direct print editions with some specifics issues I hunted down through the decades with many hundreds at least worth a 1000 times their weight in gold. I said "I had" because I passed it on to my son as a family heirloom in 2012 when he came of age. Of course the jewel of my collection was/is "Journey into Mystery #83 graded 9.4 by CGC" which was the comic book that got me hooked on THOR right there and then when I was old enough to read. Of course that comic book wasn't a collectible item as it was I don't how many reprints it was. But when I came of age and had the means, I hunted them all down, any direct 1st print editions.
I am a Marvel purist and especially when it comes down to THOR and I can recount almost every runs/story lines off the top of my head and can point you to the right books for the facts you're looking for and/or specific story lines by just you giving me a hint about what you're looking for. From the origins even to this day with the Donny Cates run going on right now. So, that's enough for setting up the context on how and why I know what I am talking about when it comes to the Marvel character of THOR and as to why I hated this movie so much.
The character of THOR appeared in a total of 8 MCU movies including 4 of his own. Again, being that THOR made the majority of my golden eggs among my collection and the most complete above all other Marvel/DC various character runs. Seeing how the MCU portrayed THOR in the MCU is heartbreaking and It pains me to see kids (young millennials and Gen-Z) these days not knowing their Marvel characters other than what the MCU/Kevin Feige feeds/tells them in their movies and they never picked up a comic book in their lives. The MCU completely destroyed and retcon the Marvel character of THOR. They made him a buffoon, a comic relief, a dumba$$, weakling, a dimwit and totally nerfed him power and abilities wise. The MCU character is night and day from the comic book version. THOR Ragnarok, Avengers: End Game and now this latest THOR love and thunder movie, have completely made a mockery of the great Marvel character of THOR.
Taika Waititi directed the two worse films of THOR and this man should never come within a thousand yards of anything THOR related future projects. This THOR Love And Thunder is a big joke from start to finish and it pains me to see one of Stan Lee's greatest characters used in such ways that he must be rolling in his grave right now. Me who thought that no new THOR movie could ever be as bad or worse than THOR: Ragnarok, then Taika Waititi comes along, proves me wrong and surpasses himself by directing his second piece of sh*t THOR movie.
Katherine Kennedy destroyed "Star Wars" and "Luke Skywalker", so much so that this hit Disney hard. And now, they are letting this happen again by having bad writers and even worse directors. Katherine Kennedy was/is the doom of "Star Wars". While "Kevin Feige is turning into Katherine Kennedy" and "Taika Waititi" is the "Rian Johnson" version of Marvel. You want to know who the real Marvel Thor is, pick up a few comic books from the golden age up till the Donny Cates run going on right now, That's the real Thor, King and All-Father of Asgard.

    • @xdjrunner

Tbh you have to realistically look at MCU as it's own universe. That makes all the bad decisions exist in their own merit aka the MCU and it's number, 16666 I think? Someone correct me if not.
Even comic readers will agree, it's the reason we have the multiverse numbered and the awesome happenings within the varied universes of the comic runs.
However even the MCU messes this opportunity up when they mistakenly reference their own characters in Dr. Strange MoM as being 616, which can't be true because the mainline comics is 616 soooooo
Basically they're gonna have to do even more Retcons in the MCU to address inconsistencies with the characters and plot holes, old issues they solved with the comics' narratives decades ago.
Tl;Dr we gotta look at MCU as its own universe, as tradition to the comics... Even though the MCU broke the tradition by introducing the confusion (future mystery?) of having the movies and comics of having both the same number of 616.
Surely, they can sort this out. Surely.... -oh fuck-

    • @xdjrunner
      @xdjrunner 2 года назад

As I reread this they probably are gonna go the Secret Wars Battleworld angle with Incursions being the major threat, just like in Dr. Strange MoM.
In the comics, several universes we're being merged like Incursion events, so that may be explanation of why MCU was revealed to be 616,
That is the only connection I could muster because the rest is literally just multiverse stuff and I have seen more than enough of that.
No Clone Saga again for me no thanks lol my head is already needing rest trying to sort out a movie franchise's epic narrative.

Immaculate visuals, use of color, and breakout performances by Gorr and Jane. My major problem with the film was the ending didn't make sense. I won't completely spoil it for those that haven't seen it, but they fiercely fought to stop Gorr from getting to a certain place and then in the end just gave him a motivational speech and left the fate of countless beings up to his good judgment. What if Gorr said, "F*ck it" after the pep talk and completed his plan? Couldn't Thor have used that opportunity to get what he wanted? It was a rushed and contrived plot that ultimately left me confused and disappointed.

The problem wasn't overused comedy. The problem is THE ENTIRE FILM did fing nothing. The villain felt just as generic and bad as the one from thor 2. He was a generic and boring villain that did nothing the entire film other than attack a small town of new asgard and kidnap a couple of kids. . . and THIS was the ONLY character driving the plot forward. As a result, the plot was uneventful.
And yes, that's the true problem, the plot was uneventful with alot of empty air that they had to fill with jokes rather than plot points. This script felt like what I would expect from a disney plus show. It's not what I would expect from an actual movie budget. Thor was exclusively a "reactionary protagonist". In Ragnarak, he was an "active protagonist". This is the difference for what makes this kind of films either good or trash. Is the person driving the plot forward actually doing anything interesting? If no, then you have a bad premise for a film. The whole thing needed to be reworked for how much of a "no" it answers that question with.

I think for Thor 5 they need someone else to direct it. Taika just had too much comedy in it. Like the first half was trying so hard to be a comedy but mix in serious elements.
Also, before going into it I knew that Gor would be killed off since Marvel has a villain problem. Plus, I don’t think Christian Bale would want to stick around and be in another marvel movie.
Plus, I’m glad that they didn’t replace Thor with Jane or should I say Mighty Thor. And now seeing where Thor is now at the end of the movie is bound to give us a new story that’ll further develop Thor’s character.
