Final M113 vehicle rolls off the line at Bandiana

- BAE Systems Land and Integrated Systems Director Kim Scott handed Major General Grant Cavenagh a set of keys at the event to symbolise the completion of the last M113 production vehicle at Bandiana.
More than 150 people attended to recognise the end of a decade long project to upgrade 431 M113s.
Over the life of the project, more than 1000 people were involved in the project at three sites in two states -- Bandiana and at Williamstown in Victoria and Wingfield in South Australia.
More than a million hours went into the project which included cutting and stretching the hulls and the design and integration of new sub-systems into the seven M113 vehicle variants.
Mr Scott said that while the upgraded M113s looked similar to how they would have in the 1970's, they were 'a generational leap ahead' with improved firepower, protection and habitability from the original M113 A1 vehicle. The finished vehicles are also more reliable and faster following the upgrade.
The project began in 2002, with the first completed vehicle delivered to the customer in January 2007.
"It has been an enormously challenging project but one that has resulted in the final vehicle being completed well ahead of the contracted December 2012 deadline" said Mr Scott said.

Here in Greece the M113 is called "little duck" because is amphibious.
This vehicle will always have a place in my heart,i had unforgettable memories when i served in the Army with it.

Drove one during my stint with 1-149AR with the CAARNG. Fun vehicle. I can see why it is an appreciated and loved vehicle worldwide.
Don’t confuse these with the Viet nam era version. The original APCs showed up at BAE were cut in half and about eighteen inches added in the middle. This required the addition of another wheel with all the added suspension bits. The ‘hull’ was no longer buoyant and a few other upgrades eventually made these a neat piece of transport. We’re rather retro mostly mechanical which did make them a bit archaic. Spall curtains were necessary for personnel as being aluminium the hull wouldn’t stop a .303 round and there was interior splatter when a round penetrated the hull.
With aprox. 80,000 produced and an estimated 60% still in service worldwide I'd say the M113 is a well built and highly serviceable vehicle. Wish my Tesla was made this well.

Drove them while in the Canadian military, loved every minute of it. They wouldn't be much use on a modern battlefield though. They were good in their day.
I drove a 113 and the mortar track 125 for 81 mm mortar. 1972 to 1975 with B Co 1/36 Inf Reg 3 RD Armor Division

The M113 would probably still be good for ferrying ammunition and other supplies where they are needed. If they're going to be used as ambulances they need to work out some kind of stretcher system in it to keep the wounded soldiers from getting bounced around. I'd like to see the mortar carrying function of the M113's greatly enhanced.

Thanks too to the workers who designed and fabricated this (now) historical vehicle. It was an honor driving it. I saw a sergeant have the TC hatch slam down on his CVC helmet while mobile because he neglected to insert the retaining pin. He nearly bit both of his lips off and had to be medivaced out. Yeah, his new nick name was 'lips' after that. Scary driving it in the water (with the skirts on of course) because it sank so deep, the water line was just inches away from the top. It didn't have the boat shaped hull that our friends in the Warsaw Pact had with their BMP, but it got the job done. A filtration system for when it was buttoned up in an NBC environment would have been an improvement. I guess in actuality, in an NBC environment, nothing would have mattered, but of course we trained constantly for that scenario. Other than that, it was a great platform.

There’s a filter system on the cargo hatch that’s supposed to be an NBC filter. Probably more for morale than NBC. It was usually clogged with dust too.

I drove an M113A1 from May 1973 to July 1974. A Troop 1/3 ACR Ft. Bliss Texas. The 3Rd CAV is now a Stryker Regiment at Hood.
Scouts out my friend. L troop 3/3 ACR Ft. Bliss from 1976 to 1979. Sheridan crew member. Each platoon had 3 Sheridans, 4 M113's and 3 M114's.

Beautiful military vehicle, I want it to be back in operation for many more decades and never need to be replaced by the useless omfv.
The new omfv is much more survivable than the M113. It seems you would want better equipment for our soldiers, so they have a better chance of returning home to their families.

'Upgraded' with a 50. cal pop gun, in a manned turret no less..?? Minimum 20mm just to stay on par with the Warsaw pact equivalent 23mm, the politicians probably thought it would look too scary lol.

A .50 is more than enough to mess up a BMP's day. They may have had the cannon, but they also had their troops sitting on fuel tanks with the earlier BMP-1 having them as rear doors!!

I still say they need a variant with an M134 with CROWS mount and most of the space inside taken up by a giant magazine. I bet you could fit at least 30 or 40 thousand rounds easy

This upgrade was talked about when i was in 5/7 rar (mech) in the early 90s …the problem with the adf is by the time canberra pulls their finger out the bullshit red tape,paper work, sum civi saying weathr its a good idea or not 20 years has gone by and the on line battallions finally get them and its 20years to old. When will people in high places learn?? Providing adf personnel with the best equipment is a priority …same old story
same with browning hi power adf won't change it or upgrade it. why not get Lithgow/thales to modify the BHP to modern specs meaning no need to change calibers or magazines.

Had an M113 for military police convoy escort in Vietnam. The fuel tanks on the sides of the aluminum alloy, made men burn paranoid, if an RPG or 50 cal. Round hit. Anything more than 7.62mm rounds, kiss your behind goodbye!
I preferred the M114, with mounted 50 cal. and M60 mg., manufactured by Cadillac. Small, fast, and had a 160 hp gasoline Chevrolet V8.

Nothing is the best for current threats, some cage or modular armour and these are ok heck even the yanks still use them
Not really the National guard still have them but don't deploy them when their Called up for deployment because their slow loud and Death traps on the modern battlefield M113's and the Bradley for the most part are only still around because the State guard units get more federal money for maintenance on tracked Vehicles than Strykers. The Army tried to give the Washington state National guard Strykers but the governor said no because they'd lose money for maintenance.The Bradley is still relevant But getting long in the tooth the 113 not so much.

No, they don't, because not all warfare is slugging matches on open desert or being a gallery target for IEDs. If you add too much armor because you fear a hull loss, you can't carry FIREPOWER to the fight and your naked (relatively speaking) infantry will die.
M113 can operate where nothing else can go, where an Abrams would sink or a wheeled armored MRAP or Stryker would get stuck.
BTW M113 is ideal for modular removable armors such as those used in the US uparmored versions which offer as much protection as the larger Bradley in plate thickness. They can also be fitted with adjustable Davis external road arm suspension and the space filled now with torsion bars used for floor armor if desired. US firms want to sell new vehicles so congrats to Australia for keeping a format which is ideal for their use. You can't run an Abrams or Namer through soft jungle and littoral terrain and a stuck vehicle is useless.

SO what were the upgrades?!?!!?!? Waste of time watching this video, it shows nothing and tells your nothing. I was hope to here that they had been up armoured all the way around. When I was riding in them in the US Army a 30 cal round would cut through them and there was nothing to deal with anti-armour mines that were run over. You run over a mine most every time everyone was dead. If you got hit with a RPG it was rare for more than two out of 10 would survive. Maybe they are selling them to the Philippines they could use them over there combating their terrorist problems. THey could swim from Island to Island.

If you want to be cruel, its been obsolete since the 80's when our contemporaries started fielding Bradleys and Warriors for infantry support/transport but its definitely been obsolete since 2003 and the lessons learnt in the war on terror. The proofs in the pudding that no Australian m113 got deployed to the MEAO during the 10 years we were there. It will never be deployed to a warlike zone again instead remain in Australia till retirement or be used in a timor like conflict.It is an significant upgrade and a very good one, but its uncompetitive against modern IFV like the CV90
Probably correct. Time moves on so I'd hope more modern eqpt. is an improvement in function. But can those IFVs hold a "wheelie" on the back 1/4 of the tracks for a while after broaching a crest in the road? There has to be a coolness factor to that.
Certainly not obsolete, it just doesn´t hold against modern threats but is porposes was troop taxi in conventional wars not urban or insurgent wars like in Iraq or Afghanistan
@@wattcy89 IFV's cost millions whereas a m113 fully rebuilt and modernized is hundred(s) thousand. No reason to buy IFV for APC role.

RPG and ATGM. These are the killers of any such vehicle. They are cheap and in the case of RPG plentiful. How deal with them? Otherwise they are cooked sardines.
