When you look at all of these BATTLE ANALYSIS vids, one thing you can conclude is that the judges were consistent: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOCUS prefers a traditional approach and values cleanliness, burns matter, cypher attitude matters. WING prefers signature/unique moves, the ability to execute moves well, and the legacy of your style. CICO is very knowledgeable on power moves, and values variations that flow seamless into other forms of rock, without interrupting the flow; however, he also enjoys unique concepts (as long as they're dynamic). LAMINE is about crowd pleasing, how many signature moves can you spam in a set, with a little bias towards foundation. POE ONE is the most critical one, he seemingly has no bias so you have to actually be a bboy/bgirl. Bring everything you got...everything!! Don't dress wack, be clean, be original, have unique power, be in control, use transitions, try not to repeat, tops, rock, footwork...the whole nine. Just don't go overboard with the gimmicks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All of this kinda lifts the suspicion that politics are deeply involved in the outcome of "these" battles...and maybe others.
I understand paying respects to the OG culture and style of breakin, but wouldn't that imply using old recycled moves that almost every bboy does? Isn't the goal to come up with fresh moves and your original style? If judges favor the old traditional style, all bboys will look the same and the scene won't grow. I understand judging is relative and also that modern perspectives (even from older gen judges) have changed since then. I just don't necessarily agree with the weight that's put on traditional style.
But the burden isn't on El Niño to pave way, he has already broken through the boundaries of freestyle power, which is hella hard to make it look as smooth as the way El Niño executed it. To the untrained eye, his moves may seem boring. But to someone who's been practicing breaking and power moves, El Niño is a master in terms of bboy power moves. So the burden is on killa kolya. Although kolya brought some outstanding concepts, he is still not 100% master of his style yet (which he will, he just needs more years of experience). Kolya still depends on scripted set ups and transition into his signatures, unlike El Niño. I believe this is one thing that many judges will recognize in experienced bboys. Don't worry though, kolya will become very dangerous in the next few years, especially with his fresh concepts.
El nino is no where near my favorite but what im really surprised at is that no one mentioned that for a power head, El nino is sloppy. He cant keep his legs straight while flaring or airflaring. His footwork might be nostalgia for the judges but its boring to the modern bboying scene. Nothing original that he added to the table. Again, how the fuck did this guy win. Paying homage to the culture is respectful but come on.
I also like his footwork too. It has the correct form and flow, and doesn't give off that "noob" feeling that kolya was giving off. I guess it all depends on opinion in the end. Just like dyzee said
Thank you for explaining this in such a positive and constructive way. And thanks Stance for even having these videos to help educate and bring bboys together. And props to both bboys for giving it their all. Respect!
killa looked different every round more moves. el nino looked the same with the same exact top rock and basic footwork. killa hit more on beat then el nino. you can easily tell who worked the hardest but lost. killa took more risks to win.
good analysis but i disagree with the style definitions and cleanliness of elnino... toprock and footwork is very low tech, especially for new york... especially for footwork, and his freezes are repetitive, low level, and often sloppy. his flow with power is unique however, and he always freestyles
It's kinda cool how he's trying to push the bboy scene to be viewed as both a sport and an art form as well. Very gutsy and tough to do but it's definitely possible.
Big shout out to B-boy Dyzee for video battle analysis and Stance youtube channel for making it possible. I believe that the O.U.R. Judging system is objective and transparent so far in the b-boying competition, particularly in solo battles for each round. The mentioned system needs to be introduced in all major battles and judges should be implicated according their specialty in order to avoid the misunderstanding omong worldwide b-boying community. Usually, when I watch major battle i try to pay attention to judges' decisions carefully, it seems that most of them undertake judgment not on the base of their specialty or background as it was obvious during Red Bull BC One World Final in Rome but i assume that their decisions very much influenced by their preferences, likes, dislikes, friendship, countryman, oh i don’t like this b-boy he is too funny, oh i don't know him perhaps he has not made his own name yet, why should i give my vote to him, i will give my vote to b-boy whom i know and other similar thoughts goes around thier minds in some extent, not taking account and ignoring the originality and creativity of b-boys. There should not be double standards at all. There need to be clear criteria. For instance, I prefer to be judged during the battle by specialist, if he (judge) is professional and his style is all about foundation as well as musicality, let him judge me within the above mentioned frame not exceeding it, the same with originality, execution, dynamics and battle strategy. This system is much more transparent and predictable and judge understands clearly that the system doesn’t require his preference or his relations to competitors but solely asks his specialty. However, if still judges would ignore this system, excusing that b-boying is all about freedom and it does not need any judging decision making system but on the same time allowing apparent mistakes and adjustments in his decision making habits, let there be a group of respected and trusted experts like b-boy Dyzee and others, especially from old school because they are proved to be just and experienced to give their assessment of each battle and judges’ decisions. If the judge is found guilty let them to input him in a black list followed by punishment. B-boys are dancers and story tellers, their language is their body, and their speech is their style and flavor. The best story begins with an interesting and unusual idea, than it transforms to unexpected, dynamic and free creativity flow (main body) and than it finishes by strong and clear conclusions. Thank You, best of luck, let the peace and love abounds all of you! Comments made by B-boy Uma representing Crazy Guys Crew - Tajikistan
good explanation, but just a question: For example if one bboy win in musicality but lose in dinamycs and originality (imagine there is no more things to puntuate). Can the bboy who was better in musicality win? Because maybe he can make up for musicality. Musicality 5-2 Dynamics 3-4 Originality 3-4. As we see he would win on punctuation but not in another aspects. Do you have in mind every aspects and their PUNTUATION or just the aspects?
+Alvaro muñoz soto it would all depend on the judge. As Dyzee stated in our very first video, there is no unified agreed upon judging criteria. All the points you listed are what Dyzee looks at, but it may be different than other judges.
i actually think this is the best battle of the night by far...watching it i was very unsure who would win because i knew the formula you talked about in my head, and i was quite nervous when it started because i just couldn't pick a side at all...i knew killa kolya does things never before seen and he's also very clean doing it,but i also knew el nino will love the first song they played because it fits his fast hitting style and he executed the first 2 rounds flawlesly as well...in a sense both bboys brought out the best they had,but i would give it to killa kolya because he is very close to el nino in el ninos own game of power and flow, but outmatches him drastically in style and originality which is why i was very surprised to see wing voting for el nino...overall good battle and i'm sad they had to face each other so early cause both could have gone far
I think Bboying is an art. So we have colors - powermoves and pens - footwoork and toprock( I mean foundations, traditional style). Its like we have an applee, and we have to draw it. Draw something new from what we have. Push the envelope. And I think KillaKolya do it.
I think that's why El Nino won this battle, just as Victor won against Lil Zoo and Bruce Almighty. Cause the judges that year prefer a more traditional style.
i feel your argument for el nino is weak. in the first round you proposed that el nino could have taken it because of floorlords influential legacy. but who cares about floor lords legacy? this is a 1v1 battle in 2015. incorporating a battlers crews history in a judging decision is wack as fuck in my opinion
great analyzing. really hit it with perspectives, the judge panel is quite diverse. i loved el nino's original floor lords approach, but I would have chosen Kolya. Great battle
At the end of everything. He concludes nothing. you're just getting what many already know, it is obvious that each judge has his own perspective. you're just turning the matter with circular arguments, you should say who won this battle "for you" and why !!! that easy.
Since bboying has so much freedom and creativity i think it will never be some 100% criteria to decide who won! i'ts in a same time advantage and lack of our artform
i dont think you can just assume the judges taste just by telling us what they are doing themselves. for example Cico voted for Kazuki Roc vs Pocket. we dont know whats going on in their heads we cant just say: he is a powerhead so he votes for power always
so, lets just say that because bboyinhis not a sport. in the end its all on opinions on who win or lose. unlike boxing, football and so on... every judges look at battles differently
there is hell no bboying will be objective though, even if it uses the OUR system, the points are different with different judges. this is because at the end of the day, it all boils down to preference.
+sasaugebun Actually, the majority of OUR System certified judges actually do an online training for their element. There are clear definitions of what is Perfect (5pts), Good (4pts) Average (3pts) Poor (2pts) and None (1pt). However, it really depends if the judge was trained properly or not... and there have been quite a few instances where trained judges were seen to be giving biased points to their friends or fellow country men. Those judges when caught are asked why they gave those scores, they usually turn around and blame the system. It's a never ending struggle, however my point is we are closer and closer to a more objective, unified and transparent system than ever before. not just the OUR System, but with all the different systems which are being developed
Makes no sance .. this the BIGGEST breaking competiction .. and is decided by who the jugdes like more ... Musicality, dificult, clean .. for nothin .. thats not Fair

Closer look at this an it wasn't so one sided. But I honestly would of gone with Killa, I felt his swagger an energy a lot more.
Can you guys upload all the Bc One battles? Your videos are better to watch than the ones in RedBullMusic channel. :D

I'd have voted for Al Nino for a better use of space and dynamic, but then Killer Kolya responded in the last round with, "Look, I can do that too."
So in the end, I'd vote for KK
bottom line, it is an art form, it can't have a absolute result and cant be a olympic sport.
