I would also like to add that with lower notes the body is producing them through a different method so they naturally cannot "ring" in the same way that belted notes do and therefore are called 'supported' rather than 'resonant'. Its the difference between M1 sounds and M2 sounds.
Actually low notes can be resonant if the definition fits with the use formants, e.i. how /a/ is the most resonant vowel because it's formant is the highest, but since the sound doesn't exist in American English it's usually raised to a /æ/ with minimal lose in resonance, but a more naturally sounding English for Americans. So a well produced note can resonate, or more properly coincide with the primary use of resonance to project over instruments and other voices without the note being very loud and/ or amplified with a mic

Breaking news: The same term can mean completely different things depending on the context. Resonance is one thing in chemistry, another in physics, yet another in acoustics and so on...The fact that this "vocal coach" does not comprehend that is quite alarming. Either that or he purposefully deceives people.
He was right. Vocal pedagogy doesn’t define resonance as one singular thing. There’s multiple types. The quality the video is demonstrating is actually (OFFICIALLY) called: squillo, ping, ring and the singer’s formant. Resonance is just an Epiphenomenon of the process of creating sound. It’s produce using different “resonators”: nasal cavity, pharynx, oral cavity, upper skull cavity, and sinuses etc.
@@K82849 it's intellectually dishonest to frame it the way he did - "there's no such thing as a resonant c5" ?? he's misunderstanding what is meant by "resonance" here on purpose. i seriously doubt he thought people were really using resonance to mean mechanical resonance rather than referring to the quality of the sound since it's a frequent enough usage even 3 years ago that tristan as a "vocal coach" should definitely have encountered before. also he did not describe mechanical resonance. that's what it's called when a frequency matches the natural frequency of vibration of a system which causes the system to respond with greater amplitude - a resonating bridge shakes more than a bridge that is not resonating.
@@ishathakor The reason why he did that was to correct the misuse of the word resonance. Ppl are using “resonant” to define what’s already called “ping” in vocal pedagogy.
What you refer to as resonance is in bel canto called squillo, which would mean the shine of the voice, its ringing quality, or the so called singing in the mask, which is the whole point of the method. I would just like to point out that the different methods of singing seek to achieve this in slightly different ways. Classical singing opens different resonators and thus has different resonance than belting as it is used for an entire different genre.
Also resonance can come through constricted froms like the mask singing...loudness(noice) also can come through constricted means. But with faulty techniques theres always something lacking.
Yeah, I was like "VERY TALENTED? WTF?" He's very mediocre. Talented vocalist on RUclips are people like vocal chameleon Nick Pitera, powerhouse belter Von Smith or gorgeous low baritone Jonathan Young.
Meh. Tristan is the most overrated "vocal coach" on RUclips. The different between a resonant note and a note lacking resonance is singing is very obvious if you pay attention to the quality of the sound. A small-ish voice like Beyoncé's (pre 2012, after giving birth his voice got thicker) could make a HUGE sound thanks to resonance and without amplification (Halo performance at a hospital). Then you have people like Jennifer Hudson. She has a BIG voice but she lacks resonance sometimes. Beyoncé totally overpowered her singing a lower note and with less volume when they performed together at the Oscars. Volume isn't the same as resonance.
Idk why Tristan became so popular when there are multiple other channels, such as this one, that gives way better, more credible information. I saw his videos before they he somehow got popular, I wasn’t sure if it was satirical or not because of his arrogance and misinformation.

Great video! I do think that modern pedagogues & writers (Estill, Sadolin, Lovetri, Bozeman, etc.) tend to use the scientific definition of resonance as their approaches have roots in science. This is the pedagogical approach that I tend to agree with as well as I think it helps make definitions of terms more clear and uniform. Also, the scientific definition of resonance does include the colloquial definition! These two things do not have to be separate. I just think scientific pedagogical approaches make learning voice more clear for a lot of people because scientific definitions are uniform. I study mechanical engineering, and Tristan is actually wrong for saying that resonance in physics is the presence of sound. What Tristan got right: -The vocal cord is always resonating What Tristan forgot: -The human resonating chambers (nasal cavity, oral cavity etc) AREN’T always resonating. (The physics word for “human resonating chamber” is “air column.”) -Mechanical dampers (I.e tensed muscle) can reduce sounds/vibrations It is true that mechanical resonance is what allows vibrating air to vibrate the vocal cords, but this isn’t what vocal resonance is referring to. Vocal resonance refers to the SECOND STAGE of resonance - the ability for the vibrating vocal cord to vibrate the air inside the human resonating chambers. When we say a note is resonant, we mean the air in most or all of the chambers is vibrating. This creates a big sound because sound is being produced in MULTIPLE AREAS of the body. When we say a note is strained, we mean the air in little or no chambers is vibrating. This results when a person “engages their dampers” (tense their muscles). Because there are LESS sources of sound, a person straining will have to vibrate their vocal cords STRONGER to compensate for the lack of sound. This is what leads to vocal damage. In conclusion, the definition of resonance in physics does conform with that on vocal pedagogy.
Thanks so much for the video! It's definitely helped me move closer to hearing it consistently though I would've liked more comparisons to really get me there. Great work regardless.
@@Marco_Fabian37 depending on the context, the "slam" is resonance, people have different concepts of resonance in singing, Tristan refers to mere sound itself, the sound of your voice passing through your throat is resonance. Now what people on here refer to as resonance is how broad and piercing the sound of the executed note is, I personally refer to it as "well placed" sound instead of 'resonant belt' etc
Obi Brandon you can have all the “concepts” you want but the resonance we’re speaking of is the human voice. Here is an excerpt of one of my vocal professor’s book from college. “The laws of physics require that to produce sound there must be a generator, an oscillator and a resonator: Your generator is the breathing mechanism discussed in Chapters 2 and 3. The oscillator is the larynx, the vocal cords, false vocal cords, and other muscles and ligaments. And for resonators you have the bucco-pharyngeal cavity. This begins above the vocal cords and proceed through the pharynx (throat), which is divided into three sections. The sections are the laryngopharynx which is directly above the larynx and epiglottis; the oropharynx, which is behind the mouth; and the nasopharynx, which is behind the nose. Your mouth, or oral cavity and your nose or nares (nostrils), also act as resonators. When air flows between your slightly open vocal cords (folds, bands, and wedges), the Bernoulli effect, i.e. suction, occurs, caused by the difference in air pressure above and below the cords, This suction brings the cords together because air in motion has less pressure and density. When the pressure is equalized, the cords separate and release microscopic puffs of air initiating sound waves. The quantity of waves produced in one second determines the pitch of a note. This can be anywhere from tens to hundreds, or even over a thousand waves per second. (Remember that without the Bernoulli Effect it would be impossible for you to make any sound at all.) The breathing mechanism is the generator providing the power/air to vibrate the vocal cords initiating the tone. The vocal tract is in fact a series of secondary resonators. Each secondary resonator has a different size and shape as well as texture (some hard surfaced, some soft). As a result, each part of the tract imparts various qualities to the tone. Thus all voices are different because all vocal tracts are different”

Christina’s is one of the best she gives different parts of her voice for different songs or different parts of songs she mixes very well like other amazing artist of her legendary vocal caliber!
Christina’s G#4 wasn’t resonance. Yes it was supported, but it was only reverb that made the sound more full and deep. But this video just ends ALL drama.
Could you talk about the term "Supported range"?? It's been a debatable topic within the vocal community and I kinda like it actually Edit: the term not the wars
His definition isn't exactly wrong. It is the definition used in physics. A better word to use to describe the ringing quality of these notes is resonant. Resonant works better as a description of a sound quality. My voice coach uses that definition with me as well. And she describes ringing notes as resonant, ringing, or that they have a bell like quality to them.
@@resurgingflame thats what i mean. Resonant is an adjective, which works better as a description of a sound. I hear more voice teachers using resonant to describe the ringy sound a singer makes when they sing with no tension and are maximizing the use of their vocal tract and resonance chambers. The way most people on youtube use it is technically incorrect. They say, "Wow, they're producing such a good resonance!" Which doesn't make sense when you're trying to describe the sound, since every sound produces resonance. It produces resonance because our mouths are amplifying the sound. But when you say, "they sound very resonant," it's a better description of that ringy full round sound.
@@GetWellSoonR.E.M. it doesn't work that way lmao. The only difference between the 2 words is how they're used in sentences based on proper grammar english. Resonant is adjective so it works in sentences like "that note is resonant", "the E5 is so resonant", "are you sure that G5 is resonant?" Bcuz it actually described the characteristic of the object being talked. Meanwhile resonance is noun. So you use it on sentences like "wow the resonance on that B4 is big", "I don't hear any resonance in that note", "she produced consistent resonance". All of them are NOT describing the object, but instead the word itself IS an object. You can't use 1 of the word for all form of sentences. They're basically the same thing with different status. You're too focused on trying to "describe the sound" that you didn't realize that not all sentences use adjective. So no, we HAVE to use resonance as well bcuz that's how english works. Idk why we even argue with this bcuz this is literally basic grammar lesson lol.

As a decent musician graduated in Piano and almost in Physics, I can assure you that he dealed with Physics way worse than he did with Music. And that says it all.
I think in the 2 examples of Christina's performance there is a HUGE differing FACTOR which is the DELAY and POST PROCESSING used - in the first example she CLEARLY has A LOT MORE DELAY in the OUTPUT in the MIX where as in the 2nd example it is a VERY DRY unprocessed OUTPUT signal in the MIX - Having DELAY in the first example will GREATLLYYYY Impacts the resulting SOUNDS.. all the delays add up and creates this nice supporting thing you are talking about. That is why they ALWAYS use delay and DELAY ALWAYS makes you sound better if used correctly - in the SECOND example it was veryyyy dry - so she could actually be singing in the SAME EXACT WAY - so it is a very bad uncontrolled example to build your argument on.

Technically anything can resonant because if it wasn't you wouldn't be able to hear it. The question is "how resonant is a whistle note". Whistle notes aren't that resonant compared to someone really resonating a full on belt.
@@ii7670 There's someone in yt told me the other week that whistles cannot be resosnant, he/she stated that: "to be able to resonate you need support which whistle doesn't have". Which made me confused.
i'm not that highly educated but i think the reason why whistle can't be resonant is because it's not a connected register. it's not possible to support it but it can be free from strain and tension
What about Lewis Blissett's voice, his high notes can bless your ears of To heaven and they sound so strong and have a ring like feel to then , pls explain
Perrie. Edwards. Kim. Sohyang. Celine. Dion. Nicole. Scherzinger. Kelly. Clarkson. Maybe. Me. (I'm not sure but I think I can resonate on a C5) AND MANY OTHERS
You could also use that Tight Pants clip on Fallon where Christina very nicely happened to belted out the same not without and with resonance. The contradiction was right there.
This is also not 100% correct: Resonace can either be the physical term Tristan explained or it can be the room where a sound gets amplified. Let's take an e-guitar. It doesn't really sound like much if you don't pluck it where as a classical guitar has a lot more sound of it's own due to it's hollow body - which makes the resonant cavity. As a singer we have different resonant cavities. Mainly the hypopharynx, the oropharynx, the nasopharynx, the mouth and the nose. As a singer you influence where the air flows and which resonant cavity gets more tention. Through changing these parameters the voice can change it's "placement". A voice without any resonance would hardly make a sound (like plucking a 0.5 inch long guitar string, since our vocal chords are about that length). So every voice and every tone has resonance but it can be placed more favorable which then makes a voice sound more free and more natural.
He’s a cutie and still like some of his content, but as a singer, that totally threw me off haha! He was so convincing though. I was like wait, what?! Was I taught wrong this entire time?! Haha

Breaking news: The same term can mean completely different things depending on the context. Resonance is one thing in chemistry, another in physics, yet another in acoustics and so on...The fact that this "vocal coach" does not comprehend that is quite alarming. Either that or he purposefully deceives people.
Also Christina was supporting but her throat wasn't open enough to resonate. Great video regardless.

Alexandre Camargo Finally someone who KNOWS! Yes, I learned singing in the mask in opera. You deserve a million likes! lol!
Also resonance can come through constricted froms like the mask singing...loudness(noice) also can come through constricted means. But with faulty techniques theres always something lacking.

I understand what you are saying, though :)

I study mechanical engineering, and Tristan is actually wrong for saying that resonance in physics is the presence of sound.
What Tristan got right:
-The vocal cord is always resonating
What Tristan forgot:
-The human resonating chambers (nasal cavity, oral cavity etc) AREN’T always resonating. (The physics word for “human resonating chamber” is “air column.”)
-Mechanical dampers (I.e tensed muscle) can reduce sounds/vibrations
It is true that mechanical resonance is what allows vibrating air to vibrate the vocal cords, but this isn’t what vocal resonance is referring to.
In my belief resonance is the more vibration of sounds. Like in a concrete room echoing, without echo or reverb
Bless your soul and your channel, though I wouldn't say that Christina was producing resonance

Tristan Pareses is probably one of the worst vocal coaches on internet.
Overrated
Yeah he literally slapped a book and called it resonance smfh

Resonance & resonant is literally the same in vocal community(at least in here). Resonant is adjective while resonance is noun.

That is why they ALWAYS use delay and DELAY ALWAYS makes you sound better if used correctly - in the SECOND example it was veryyyy dry - so she could actually be singing in the SAME EXACT WAY - so it is a very bad uncontrolled example to build your argument on.

This is also not 100% correct:
Resonace can either be the physical term Tristan explained or it can be the room where a sound gets amplified.
Yesss that ring on Christina’s A4
Please react to jojo singing!
Edit: oh i thought this is react channel😂😂
So resonance can appear cause of mic reverb too ?
So resonance is open and full notes ?
