- This is our small self-converted campervan, Koti. Our home on wheels that we built from scratch, with no experience, in 2020. We built it with a queen size bed, a kitchen out the back of the van, 2 x 1.5 meter pull out drawers for that all important storage, full off-grid capabilities with solar power, a fully functioning and spacious fridge.
We travelled in this van to over 20 countries, and in this video we share some of our hints and tips about converting a small van suitable for living and exploring in over long periods of time.
We release videos about our adventures every Sunday, please do LIKE and SUBSCRIBE, turn on notifications. We would love to have you with us.

I've got to say, I've watched what feels like hundreds of vanlife builds, and yours is one of my favourite, looks ridiculously homely.
THANK YOU!!! That is such a cool comment, we really appreciate not only your wonderful words but that you have taken the time to write them. We are about to start thinking about building a new bigger van for when the baby arrives (any day now) Great to have you along for the ride. 😎
I built my own small van and am always watching conversion videos for ideas. Your video is the most informative and well-produced I have ever seen. What a couple! Your presentation is fluid and clear throughout. The plan you designed was so well conceived, the workmanship is quality, and your interior design is lovely. I’m sure you can tell I am very impressed! I look forward to future videos.
Wow!! Thank you so much for such a wonderful comment, that really does mean the world to us. We’ve loved every moment of our journey so far and are very grateful to have you along for the ride. Hope you’re still enjoying your van! Keep safe and thank you so much again.
Worth watching until close to the end for some solar panel and battery 🔋 advice.
What a nice couple. My husband will definitely getting in my nerves if we need to spend more than a weekend in a tiny place like this…but they deal very well, looks so sweet an lovely. It’s like their honeymoon.
That kitchen is awesome!
Thanks Greg! 👍🙏🚐
Fabulous good work guys
Thank you!
I just found your channel as my partner and I are starting our van journey, this design is the closest to what we’re looking at doing! Fantastic video as well
Amazing friend! Thanks for the support ❤️❤️
best van in the world.
Wow thank you Ged! What a kind comment, that's made our day. We have recently sold Koti and bought a bigger van to travel with our baby in, we're currently converting it and releasing build series videos every Sunday so do tune in if you fancy it! We're hoping it'll be as special as our beloved Koti, we loved that van. All the best and thanks again.
Buying my Hiace tomorrow ;) Im so stoked!!!!
Good choice wise one!! Enjoy your adventures.
Your videos bring back memories of the camping my family did in an old bus that my dad converted.
That's awesome Jean, really pleased to hear it!
Ah I just found you guys and you're adorable! I love the van ❤
Thanks so much Angie! So appreciate you being here.
You certainly made the most of the small space ⭐⭐🙂
Thanks Glenys! We did our very best. Thanks for watching friend!
Something tells me that I'm going to be watching all of your videos, very well made and full of useful tips.
Hi Haraldur, great to hear from you friend. Thanks so much for watching our videos, it means the world to us. We very much hope that you enjoy the viewing. Welcome to our channel. 🙏👍😀
Amazing job! Looks super cozy; you did a great job presenting it as well!
Thanks so much Helena! Great to hear from you and really appreciate you leaving us a comment.
I have seen many videios, but this arrangement and coordination on this size is the best video. Congratulations on this fun little house. I wish you all the fun and love
Thank you Ameen!! 👍❤️👍
I watched this after watching some of your later videos. I am so loving your genuine enjoyment of the whole journey. None of the over the top hype. GENUINE. That’s the word.
Thanks so much friend! That really does mean a lot to us. ❤️
You have a nice van build, the kitchen area is ideal! Norway, Finland and Switzerland are places I want to see so bad. I live in the US in Florida. Thanks for sharing your vanlife
Hi Danita, great to hear from you. Thanks for your message. Norway Finland and Switzerland are amazing countries, I think our favourite was Finland, super free to travel and great landscapes. Good luck with your adventures friend! 👍😎😀
Your title attracted me:) We have recently bought a small electric van, we’ve made a slide out sideways sofa - bed and a narrow side shelf unit. We’ve only managed to go to Cornwall and Devon and days out in the Cotswolds.
Thank you for sharing your experience and these helpful tips. I’m going to look into flexi solar panels, I didn’t realise solar fans existed, I like how slimline yours is.
How exciting for you guys! It’s the best adventure ever and we wish you all the best. Do shout if we can help with anything, and let’s hope we can all get back on the road sooner rather than later!
Absolutely love your van build, I'm going to have to screen shot bits of it so I don't forget!
Hi One woman and her dog! Great to hear from you, thanks for watching friend. This was a great van for sure. We loved it. 🚐🚐👍❤️
LOVE the long drawer...
Thanks so much Tonya, it was a game changer for sure!
Quite envious here! Great functionality!
Thanks James. Great to hear from you, we really appreciate your comment. If you didn’t already, please do subscribe, our adventures are just getting started. Oh and look out for Sunday’s video, we head far, far south! Thanks!
@@TheNewbys hoping to convert my 56 Ford in pic to a small camper👍☮️
Hi James, definitely do it. There are so many reasons why it’s a good idea. One tip from us, ensure your solar set up is rock and roll. Use the flexi panels they work best. If we can help, let us know. Cheers!
I am truly impressed with your transformation of your camper van ,I also have seen a lot but can honestly say yours by far beats any others you certainly are learning to do so much yourselves and saves so much money and what an achievement it must give you so much satisfaction. I agree about the metal runners being better than the wood as i have wood in my kitchen and I am having to find the same wood around my property to use for repair work , I also have noticed in the heat over here which at present is just killing me the drawers are leaving tin6 particles of wood dust from opening and closing and dryness so I will be keeping an eye on that . Anyway thank you for such a lovely video of the excellent job you did very well done Tara and John ❤️👍
Thank you Caroline. We loved this van, it was really the start of all the adventures here on RUclips. Thanks for watching the Vlog and sharing your own experiences with us. Great to hear from you friend. ❤️👍🙏🚐
Beautiful van ,one of the best I've seen,
Thanks Harvey. Great to hear from you, thanks for watching friend. 👍🚐🚐🙏
Good choice with the Hiace, i also converted one ✌🏼 I can't believe you build everything in 22 days! It took me 4 months
Hi Fritz, Great to hear from you friend. Yes the HiAce is an awesome conversion. We loved that van. Currently we are driving a larger van because we had a baby. Also a cool conversion. Look out for the new van tour in the next wee or so. Thanks so much for watching and taking this journey with us, your support is so very much appreciated! 👍🙏🚐

Size doesn’t always matter 😉
Although we have a factory built van, we absolutely love self builds as they’re always unique with plenty of character. You’ve done a superb job, it looks stunning 😍
Haha!!! 😂😂 Thanks Profs! Good to hear from you guys.
This is a beautiful van.
Thank you! It's been great fun travelling in it. We think we will take it out for one more adventure before building a bigger van that will be big enough for ourselves and the new baby, due any day! :)
Stick with the fixed solar panels, they last longer, are cheaper and give you more power for the size. Just add two or three more panels and you're good to go. I would also use a roof rack to mount the panels on instead of drilling the roof so less possibility of leaks. Lovely build nevertheless. Greetings from sunny Jamaica.
Hi Lawrence, great tips. Thank you. We also have decided the fixed solar panels are best. Love the roof rack idea. 🙏🚐🚐
I love this van! Thank you for sharing
Thanks Traveling light. Great to hear from you. Good luck with your own adventures! 👍

Informative and charming without the pretentiousness. Thank you and happy travels.
Thank you so much!! We’ve loved every moment we’ve had in the van. Great to have you along for the ride and hope all is well with you.
What a brilliant build! I wouldn’t change the panels tho. Flat are more fragile and have a shorter lifespan. Kneel on most of them once and they crack. Can’t wait to meet the new Newby! Cheers from Canader eh!
Good advice Susan. Thanks. We will keep it in mind with our new build. Great to hear from you. :)

I’m looking at getting a Toyota Hiace and have found the perfect one! Hi Wild Mads! Great to hear from you! You will be really happy with a HiAce, we are certain of that. What a great van!! Thanks for subscribing, next adventure is Portugal and Crusoe’s first ever flight!
I am planning on getting a Hiace too, but it deff. must be diesel, and preferably four wheel drive. Because i live in hot Jamaica i will have to run the a/c a lot even during the night sometimes, so diesel makes a lot more sense for me.
Love this! We're also hoping to buy a hiace and do a similar layout with the kitchen in the back to take advantage of the rear door roof!
Quick question: what fridge do you guys have? Love the size and the double doors!
Thanks so much Kayla, we loved our HiAce so much and really miss her, we’ve upgraded to a bigger van because we had a baby and are almost finished the build! We’ve documented it all on our channel if you’re keen to check it out!

Hi Colin. Good question. I think we got the line on Amazon. Thanks for your comment and great to know you’re out there. Stay safe. :)
Love watching your van tour. What did you do to resolve the vent leak issue? What do you use the draws at the front of the living space for and the space at the bottom of your bed.
Fantastic design and I'd love this sort of thing for myself 🥰 thanks for sharing 🥰
Hey Foxy Locks. Great to hear from you!!! Thanks for dropping us a line. :) drawers at the front are for bits and pieces and shoes, also, there is a secret store there. ;) Look forward to seeing your build when you make it! Let us know. Oh, if you didn’t already, please do subscribe and like, we would love to have you with us. Thanks!!
@@TheNewbys thank you for your message. I asked about the vent as I was looking at one and just wondered about the leak issue you had with that rain. Was it easy to install.
I have subscribed so I am now part of the family 🙌😃
Hey Foxy Locks! Thanks for joining us. The vent was really easy to install. Just cut a hole in the roof and put it there. The switch was already wired. The leak issue might just have been unique to our fan. However we found that when it rained heavily the water would seep in through the gap between the solar panel and the frame. (The round solar panel on top) We used a silicone to seal it and problem was solved. It’s a good fan, just remember to turn it off when you’re driving. :)
Hi, my wife and i love everything that you took on, and your colour scheme matches ours exactly!! Lekker!!
We are planning to drive from Scotland to Aljezur in October 2024, and we are also looking for an area to buy in the north but still have no idea where. Do you think we can come look you up when we are in that area?
We are originally from Namibia. See you've been there too. 😂
Do you perhaps have a link to the flexible insulation you have used in the van? What thickness is it, please?
Be blessed

Hi Kelvin, good to hear from you. Thanks for watching. We will be filming for explore during a good part of October. Thank you friend. 👍🙏🤗
@@TheNewbys you’re welcome
Hi, I have watched so many van build vids but i love your design. I was just wondering around how much did the entire van build cost?
Hi there, great to hear from you, thanks for your comment! We think that you can do the build for about £1200 plus the van cost. Good luck!
Hey Newbys...watching late..
Thanks Belinda! Hope you have enjoyed the show! Great to hear from you, thanks for watching friend.
John & Tara,
Your videos are sublime. They look professional. I’ve subscribed.
Koti is full of character, unlike so many I’ve seen on eBay and elsewhere. You’ve inspired me to consider the unthinkable - converting a van. I have no relevant experience and find the idea utterly intimidating. May I ask if you have any related skills e.g. carpentry, an electrician etc or if you used someone with those skills when converting Koti? I’m wondering where my skill level is in relation to yours - I imagine they are poles apart.
Did you find a solution to the leaking roof vent? I’m assuming it’s a design flaw rather than a fault because another van conversion company says in their videos that they always use a certain brand of fan because it doesn’t let the rain in.
May I also ask if either of you have ever worked as a photographer? If not, you have a very good eye.
Koti is beautiful. I know you’ve sold her but she is remarkable. And I can see why you were able to stealth camp - she doesn’t look like a campervan..
Congratulations on little Crusoe.
If you have the time to let me know, I would be grateful. If not, I understand. Thanks very much.
Hey Mister G!
Amazing to hear from you and thank you so much for such kind words of encouragement for what we do! We are loving this journey so far and it means a lot to us to have you along for the ride.
And - HURRAH!! Our biggest goal with all of this is to perhaps inspire people to try something that they haven't done before, and converting a van has been one of our most fun projects ever and we'd encourage you to go for it! John does have skills in carpentry, but they're all self taught over years of just having a go. With the help of a lot of RUclips videos and trial and error he's now able to work through stuff quicker and beautifully, but we all start somewhere and we have no doubt you can do it if you want to. There are so many handy resources online that can help, and we're here too if you need a helping hand and if John can give you any advice as your build takes shape. If you have a list of questions on how to do things, and would like a conversation then do let us know, we'd be super excited to help.
The roof vent just needed some extra sealing so that was all fine in the end, and yes - more a design flaw than anything but we found a workaround.
And no, again with the photographic side of things, just something we both enjoy doing and learning more about as we do more!
Thanks so much once again, we really do miss Koti but we get messages from her new owners from time to time and her adventure continues which makes us really happy! And, adventures in our new van Safari are about to get very exciting!!
Do shout if there is anything more we can help with, happy to help and just so grateful to have you along for the ride.
All the best, let us know how you get on!
Tara, John and Crusoe
@@TheNewbys Hi Tara
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, and for offering to chat in the future. It is very kind of you. I’ve decided I need to look at DIY videos, and to do some basic carpentry. There’s no point in my buying a van until I’ve acquired some basic skills.

Would you mind telling me where that statue is located at 11:54? Does it have a name to look it up? Is it ancient or modern? I'm really into studying history and I've never seen it before and wanted to look into it. It just looks very interesting.
Hi Carrie. Thanks for the comment. Good to hear from you! The statue is located at Salaspils in Latvia, which was epic. You can watch the Latvia Vlog ruclips.net/video/272K0OjcsSY/видео.html it was really one of our favourite countries. The statue is called Humiliation (i think) and is located at a place where a metronome beats like a heart that can be heard across the entire site. It’s epic!

Hi, new subscriber here 🫶🏻beautiful van ! Do you miss having a little home on wheels ? Also may I ask the name of the green paint ? God bless and thank you ☺️
Hi Rachel. It’s great to have you here with us. We are so happy to have settled down but van life is amazing. The colour of the green paint is Green Smoke ❤️❤️
Awesome! What’s that solar powered vent? Do you have a link to it?
Hey Mark. Good question. The vent works really excellent, one tip would be to ensure the fan is turned off when you drive. Also if it does leak 😬 it’s the joint between the solar and the metal (unlikely but it might) www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181433777838 great value and a solid option.

It took John about 22 full days of work so if you’re having to pay for someone else to do it it’ll of course cost a lot more. Hope that helps! Good luck with your own conversion plans 😎 🚐
I can see how you access half of the space under the bed with the long drawer from the back.. how do you access the space on the other side ?
Lift up the mattress! Great to hear from you, thanks for watching friend.

A car is more then just a car!
It really is! Our very special home on wheels x
So it’s a long wheelbase, and is it the long or extended/extra long?
Hi Itzy, thanks for tuning in and reaching out! Koti is a long wheel base HiAce. Shout if we can help with anything else.
