the connie converse mystery always made me sad in a melancholy way. i understand why she decided to disappear as ive honestly contemplated doing that despite it being unrealistic now. i hope wherever she is she found happiness.

I feel the same way, from the melancholy to being curious about if I ran off to just be with myself however or wherever it may be. More than anything I would love to know what her reaction would have been to the new cult following of listeners and songwriters she inspired with her ways of music. One of my favorite and least favorite stories in music because of the complications and emotions of it all, ya know?

It seems to me the reason she disappeared was depression and an undiagnosed condition which may have been treated, if gotten medical help.

Really loved this. It really is a sweet, sad story. I love that someone heard her recordings and gave them a second life. Thanks for sharing.

Her music matches her story, it’s as interesting as it is haunting. It’s beautiful, but speaks on some ‘ugly’ subjects at times. She has no idea the impact she would have.
Thank you for watching, happy you enjoyed the story!

Thank you so much!! Connie truly is one of my favorite artists of all time, and her story is so uniquely hers just like her music. The writing style she employs mixed with the story, the way it was recorded, and her tone just draws you right in. Honestly, I’m a huge fan of your channel and this is a cool moment for me as a little music gal on RUclips. Thank you for watching. 💜

Hey Soundfield, how are you. It's funny, I don't know how I came across Victoria, oh yeah, I remember. So after hearing about Connie Disappearance I became curious. I didn't know of Connie until this question was posed in this group to Janine, and as the question was being formed the person asking the question was saying that this singer she liked, disappeared and rumors surrounded her ever since. Janine pulled the cards, and began answering. I'm not gonna spoil it for you but upon the revelation you'll hear, a lot of pieces will fall into place and I'm sure you're gonna like the info. Anyway, take care. I don't think I'm gonna write any more people that I see on Victoria's channel. I'll leave that up to you guys. Maybe you'll wanna share or not but I'm gonna go back to watching the show that I heard Connie's name in and became curious myself. One love.

Long before Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and Dylan, Connie Converse was a pioneer in folk music. Thank you for bringing this out of obscurity

Beautiful! So sad and so lovely. Stumbled across your video as I just discovered Connie today and she is now a new enthusiasm of mine. You presented a fitting tribute to her (as well as all the other never-appreciated artists who we may never hear about). Thanks for the well-done video. Informative, smart and a refreshing respite from so much of the RUclips blather out there. Much appreciated. I'll be back for more. Thanks!

This is such a lovely comment! I appreciate it so much. Connie is one of my favorite artists and inspires some of my own style as a singer/songwriter. If there’s anyone else you’d like to see me cover, definitely let me know! I’m always doing research for one thing or another, and would like to find more artists like Connie. I appreciate you sticking around!
I know for sure I want to dive into Vashti Bunyan’s story as well as Judee Sill, who is super interesting to me. I’m still working through those discographies.

I just finished watching We Lived Alone. I enjoyed it. One thing that is tragic is how many people in the early 20th-century and before had depression. They did not have the medications we have now. Wha'ppened to Connie? If this was today, I would say ask the CIA, FBI, IRS. There is a record on just about EVERY American now but back then, pre-computers, people may have more easily slipped between the cracks. Many paper records were destroyed without being digitized. Connie probably dinna drive into a lake, 'cuz VWs float. I hope she relocated & lived at least a few more decades.

Minor thing, but as someone who grew up in Laconia, New Hampshire, I'll correct the pronunciation: It's "Lah-kone-ia" -- hard "c," not a soft "c."

Hello! I know the video's not about him, but Gene Deitch (Deesh) isn't Czech. He was born in Chicago, and lived in LA for most of his tenure in the US. I really enjoyed this video, and you are a great host to watch. Your enthusiasm is magnetic. I'm just an intolerable animation obsessive.

Hey! I'm new to your channel, so I don't know if you've covered him yet, but Jim Sullivan has a lot of similarities to Connie Converse, including haunting music and a mysterious disappearance. I love both artists greatly, and would recommend Sullivan's work, too!

I wonder.what CC meant by "the twentieth twentieth" and "hundred hundredth?" That quote gets repeated frequently, and maybe it obvious, but I'm not getting it.

My answer: the answer may lie in the vaults of DNA of unidentified remains. I imagine starting the the part of the United States where she last was-out West?

What a shame that the family didn't get her to a doctor. Not how sure psychiatric meds were in those days, but treatment existed. Hearing how "trips" were the only cure the family could think of (?) Maybe she resisted professional help, don't know. I imagine that her DNA may exist in some unknown bank of unidentified remains somewhere.

I don't believe the phone call at all; there's no evidence she ever dated anyone - men or women; people around her said she was most likely lesbian, which added to her depression since dating another woman at that point would have brought her seriously bad repercussions. Connie also began wearing men's clothes regularly, including t-shirts, shirts, pants, etc. Then she wound up needing to have all her teeth pulled, so after that she had to wear dentures - this undoubtedly affected her ability to sing. I also think the timeline regarding her disappearance is incorrect, and may have been intentional; her family knew that most likely she was going to end herself, and I think it was easier for them to imagine her just fading away than committing such a sin (in their minds). I don't think they wanted her to be found. (BTW, I'm a former Homeland Security Investigator.)

I realise I'm very much in the minority but I simply cannot understand the success of Bob Dylan. His voice is horribly grating and toneless. His tunes merely OK and lyrics no more incisive, or a mirror on life, than those of many others. There are many infinitely more talented. Connie Converse is one such person. One can often tell the presence of genius because it's almost always a bedfellow of eccentricity and an inability to rub alongside with mundanity and the frustration of not being able to make a success of one's talents. IMany times, it's accompanied by the numbness of alcohol and nicotine. Personally, I suspect Connie had simply had enough of, and found it increasinly difficult to continue to be surrounded by, those that could not see beyond a green back and so took what ultimately was an easy decision to live a simple life of anonymity. Whatever the truth, I really hope she lived life it the way she imagined it would be. Of course, it's possible she's still with us, but unlikely. If she is, I hope she realises what a truly great, intuitive and thoughtful human being she is. Thank goodness her legacy has not been lost.
