Shohei isn’t like you and me. He doesn’t have a regular account at the local Chase. He probably got many accounts in different countries both private and business. For context sake if you had $10,000 spread out over 5 bank accounts would you notice $100 missing? Maybe, maybe not

you guys are all forgetting that Mizuhara was his interpreter for everything so if a bank were to call him the interpreter is the one that does all the communication. He can easily mislead all the other English speaking Americans while leaving Ohtani in the dark. Also what is so messed about this situation is that the absolute best case scenario here for Ohtani is his best friend (former) stole from him and tried to implicate him in a federal crime. The fact that Mizuhara is MIA not in the US, while Ohtani is fully cooperating with the federal investigation and the authorities should speak volumes. Ohtani is a victim of a crime and even after fully disclosing his situation today some people continue their smear campaign to Ohtani. You have to be a mean-spirited asshole to be able to do that.

I agree. And when Ohtani was back in Japan the person who managed his account was his mother. I think he doesn’t have a good understanding of financial management. Now, he has a trusted interpreter who is basically doing everything for him, so it is very likely that he allowed him to manage the bank accounts as well. I also remember in a Japanese news, they said Ohtani left a message to Ippei on airplane. Instead of calling him interpreter, I believe he said manager. So Ippei is not just doing interpreting job for him.

Ohtani and the people around Ohtani trusted this interpreter too much. Even if voluminous paper documents or online messages about these huge money transactions from his bank had reached Ohtani, they were in English, so there is a high possibility that this interpreter processed them conveniently. Ohtani hardly understands English.

Most can't spell out numbers on a checkbook, and many can't process the details re: the purpose for the expenses. The concept of "trust" with the Japanese is culturally different from the west. The point is, I had access to most of my client's, user id, passwords, code, numbers for all financial accounts to draw and deposit their money. Crazy? Yes! Shohei is famous for only thinking about becoming the best baseball player. Even when he was in Japan, he was not managing his money. His parents did manage his money and sent him only 800 dollars every month. It's difficult for me to imagine that he was managing his own money in the U.S., where he cannot speak or understand the local language and was not familiar with the customs and systems in the U.S.

Many individuals who are “adults”, are constantly targeted and victimized by others with malicious intentions and well-thought-out strategies. If every single responsible adult could protect themselves from any scams, theft, fraud, and the like, there would be significantly fewer prisons in the world, wouldn’t there? In my country, South Korea, there have been a few infamous lawsuits and criminal cases involving Kpop superstars and actors/actresses-individuals who are exceptionally talented and intelligent-being deceived and having substantial amounts of money stolen over many years by their close friends, relatives, siblings, and even their own parents. There exist numerous methods for deceitful individuals to falsify documents, commit bank theft, or manipulate online banking systems. Let us not assume we are immune to deception and falsely assert that we have never been lied to, simply to portray others as either foolish or deceitful.

I'm commenting from Japan! It's Google Translate, so please forgive me for my immaturity. The way Ippei stole money from Ohtani's account was when he invited American outfielder Lars Nootbaar during the WBC, and Ippei took advantage of the fact that Ohtani had a time constraint before the season to back up meetings with Nootbaar, food and drink expenses, etc., and that Ohtani believed in Ippei!
