I’m Ghanaian and so I understand the traditional sense. The other side is that the whole thing of women carrying their husbands last name had another origin. Back in the day women were property and our last name would say who our “owner” was sadly. So that’s why they would take their husbands last name. Obv there are other reasons but that was one. Things are not like that today. That’s why it’s easy to question that tradition.
Children though in Ashanti tribes are named after people and traditionally the last names would be different. I think of late people have the same only because of the way the western world work.

My last name is my late Ghanaian father’s name so it’s not going anywhere. I will have to find a man who’s happy for me to take his surname along with mine ( double-barrelled). Gogo is right, you have to discuss these things before marriage and you have to be compatible. Personally in a South African context -the marriage isn’t about yall only ...it’s about the whole neighbourhood and your families and uniting as one ...it’s an understanding and a thank you for your input in the journey for the couple to meet and God hopefully stay together .It is about these two families with the same or different cultures coming together to give thanks and acknowledgement of bringing their children on this earth to grow the household (the woman coming into the mans family to grow their legacy) as well as thanking the females parents for bringing up their child well and allowing us as the male family to accept her as a daughter in the family...it’s a long story but in summary
When it's all said and done last names as good as they are some African or Caribbean peoples have lost their REAL family name. So when you put it into perspective it really don't matter.
