  • Did 5th Gen Ruin Monster Hunter?:
The announcement and subsequential release of world was one of the most impactful steps in the monster hunter franchise’s history. Almost completely overnight, this once extremely niche series became a total powerhouse in the gaming industry, selling millions upon millions of copies and raising its name into the top alongside other highly respect titles like the soul series for example. Capcom managed to take a now 20-year-old IP and bring it to the masses with amazing levels of success.
On that winter day of 2018, everyone around the globe discovered the wonders that monster hunter has to offer, its incredible monsters, its addicting and masterfully crafted combat, the theme and mythos of this unknown world, 5th generation truly changed the course of this franchise forever. But this sequel is special in more ways than one, no doubt that its introduction brought endless potential and benefits to the series, that simply cannot be denied, but some of them however, may not have been all that great.

Just farming content and bringing back the old "did this game that brought actual big differences changes to the game RUIN the series?" which is generally just ragebaiting and sometimes a vague discussion to make a pointless argument seem relevant.

Despite being called an "MH Veteran", I love 5th gen the most. World Specifically. I really do miss playing 4U, the game that made me fall in love with the series. I love how it played and all of its quirks and issues. And I can still go back, there's still time and methods. But to me, World has so much more. And even better yet, it is SO much more accessible in so many ways.
If there's one thing I enjoy more than Monster Hunter, it's playing Monster Hunter with other people that enjoy it. I'd rather play the series as is than gatekeep it behind its old design, and some mechanics that are honestly a bit dated. While there are plenty of things I want back, I'll happily let some go if they're detrimental to letting other players enjoy the series too.

Man, the thing I want to still be announced the most this year is either a MH Collection or just ports for PC and all consoles. I played some of the main old games via emulation after World and liked all of them, even if the only one I finished was MHFU's HR.
Correct me if Im wrong, all Older titles except MHGU are either unavailable or really hard to get, MH Wilds will release on 2025 still so it's the perfect time to re-release them in some way, at least the main ones for each gen.
Monster Hunter isn't the type of franchise where the sequel makes the older ones obsolete, each game has it's own unique feel. For example, MHP3rd has better gameplay for me but I still finished MHFU first because I kept going back to it because the game just felt really good in it's own way.

I'm Gen 1 player, been around since MH 1 and honestly, I think the MH community is the equivalent to Italian food elitists when it comes to casual cooking (the people that freak out and throw a pseudo-culture tantrum as soon as pizza is anything that strays away from tomato sauce and cheese). People hate everything that doesn't do what their peak game does, new features are always the end of the world, lots of very high meta talk about mostly minor or subjective issues. World tried something new and was a massive success, Rise was popular and overall a pretty good experience too that has to be acknowledged.
We have to move on and accept that the series is old, and the more "stiff" gameplay of the older games with all its charm won't come back. Luckily all these games won't run away, there'll always be enough to play. To go with the burger allegory from the video, the big mac might still taste good after 5 years, but not after dang 20. They can't cater to the same people for so, so many years.
Maybe I'm just becoming an old and tired hunter, too tired to complain about very minor issue the new generations bring. I simply don't have a hard time enjoying these, and so many new fans seem to have equally as much fun.
The one thing that could be a nice compromise, and something I'd love to see, would be a "back to the roots" game. Tone down the number of monsters and weapons, but make them more unique. Pretty much a caked-up Monster Hunter 1. Not a big fan of them having 20 weapons and 591238230 monsters with so many of them being reskins. An open world is amazing for Monster Hunter, but I'd love to see a REAL open world based in MH1 or 2 instead of the very narrow theme park layers. Gimme these Aptonoth herds, Velociprey packs and intense Rathalos hunting, where forging a bone blade is already an achievement.

The games themselves did not ruin Monster Hunter in the slightest, its more that the Monster Hunter Community got ruined in reality. The massive population spike with World lead to thousands of people not knowing how MH changes game to game. So for alot of people expected MH Games to be linear and for World to lead into World 2. So the combination of Rise not being that, and MH Games constantly experimenting with each game adding and changing mechanics, all these new players get put off by such drastic changes and just say "Game Bad" since they cant think of anything else and it leads to battles between 2 sides of the same group, while there are genuine complaints in both games, they get blown waaaay out of proportion by the other side just because they dislike the other game.
Anyways all Monster Hunter games are good, Monster Hunter players just hate Monster Hunter lmao

I can safely say, with confidence, that Monster Hunter World is just better than old games, im not saying the previous games are bad, ofc they aren't. But Monster Hunter World is the most refined and polished game so far, which will obviously intrigue the vast majority of the world with how accesible it is, i don't doubt that if the previous games were imported on PS4's and PSS's, a lot of more people would give them a shot, i for sure know i would. At this point im hoping Game Freak will take a hint and release a Pokémon game on the PC or some other console other than Switch...

I do think that 5th Gen ruined the series. I understand that most people think the opposite, but I've played these new games quite a lot and can't bring myself to like them, meanwhile I miss the old games (I started in the PSP days) and I know that I'll never see those games again, the new MH formula is too popular. It's sad. Most people can't understand that and don't even care, which is not a surprise. Just know that it's quite sad to see something you liked a lot being drastically changed and becoming popular, with the new version you don't like completely replacing the old version.
Before anyone says: "you can enjoy both new and old MH games" or "new MH games did not change that much, you're making stuff up" - No, we are talking about personal opinions and preferences here, do not assume that other people view things the say way you do or enjoy the same games you do.

Even on G Rank I can have some chill and fun time after work! In older games it's harder to achieve, some hunts are very tough. It's not bad, it's great but it can be hard to relax there haha. Well aren't you just as entitled now as you are criticing Zaguer to be?`There are a lot of people sharing his opinion, me included.
Just having an opinion, that is shared by a majority, doesn't make it right... else witch-burning was right... and other gruesome things that happened in history. You are making a big slippery slope argument here, because you either started with World OR you think, a franchise being sold to a lot of people makes it good. Being popular doesn't equal being good. MH World may have brought the franchise to the attention of the mainstream, but it did so by altering the franchises formular in such a way that at times it feels unrecognisable from the old titles. If you need to bury your old fanbase to cater to a new, bigger one, isn't it fair to argue on if that move has ruined what the series used to be?

  • @orochi_08
    @orochi_08 3 месяца назад +2

Alot of people here are saying that World is good because it gets more people into the franchise, while the argument presented in the video is completely ignored. 5th gen feels like if Square Enix saw the Monster Hunter gameplay concept and a fraction of the creative design and tried to copy it. There is nothing wrong with Square Enix, but it's not Monster Hunter, to the point where the menu UI looks foreign. Also there's the fact that people use logical fallacies and avoid arguing this really shows something. And this is almost an ironic allusion to the underlying theme of Monster Hunter.
Not trying to start a fire here, my entire argument is opinion based. It's just that Monster Hunter has to cater to two very conflicting opinions now, which might be the end of the series for alot of us.

    • @chiq3531
      @chiq3531 Месяц назад +1

The problem is that this video has no point.
Yeah, new players can't appreciate old-school monster hunter. But, how is that a problem? Monster Hunter is not a fixed idea, and most of what "veterans" call "the real monster hunter", is generally a lot of vague idealized concepts which can't even get backed up by the franchise itself.
Monster Hunter's never really been about "becoming one with nature," "having a hunter experience in a fantasy world," or about "immersion." It's a game that always had "playing with your friends" in mind. There's a reason why the actual late game content from older games were locked on rooms which allowed or even demanded for server connection.
I mean, we spent almost 3 whole generations having games, mainly on portable consoles, and even some mobile games, with very limited hardware to work around. It's not about the game becoming a Square Enix game, but more that the franchise can finally be able to have both accessibility to play with your friends (and another people) at any time, and experiment with fewer limitations to give an even better experience for players.
Of course, they have some flaws (design flaws, it is), but all the games in the franchise had.

@@chiq3531 monster hunter for me is about a lone hunter overcoming extreme dangers. none of my friends play mh so i only played in gathering hall public rooms. there's no real synergy or noticeable teamwork when youre playing with 4 random people so i just needed them to balance out the 4P scaling. also its more than just being one with nature. its more about the struggle of human advancement and nature's retaliation. culture is also an important factor. world did not incorporate culture or any tangible human struggles besides fatalis. zorah was for the sake of researching the elder crossing and it was all spoonfed. world had no culture, it was all blank slate with the only real culture being the spring event having flat chinese culture (which had zero integrated world building, it was barely a part of the game besides armor that you never see anyone actually use past a certain ms). rise had okay culture but it was also an uncreative copy paste of japanese culture. the human struggle in the mhrise plot is okay but below standard. it also falls so flat when you end up destroying the monster with all the buffs hunters got in that game. had a dentist appointment in between writing this and im kinda not as invested in writing everything out so ill leave it at that

my issue with this video is that you keep saying that the problem is that newer players won't experience the old monster hunters, but you never explain exactly HOW that's a problem. Almost all of the changes made for MH World and Iceborn were for the better, the combat is insanely better, the physics is different but as seen with rise i don't think that heavy physic is the only thing we'll see from that point on, but even things like the tracking of monsters, in mhW you have to gather clues and figure out where the monster is headed and where it is on the map, and collecting data through the game progressively reveals the monsters more and more each time you start a quest against it, which isn't perfect, but compare that to old MH. In old monster you either don't know where the monster spawns, in which case you mindlessly run around the map until you find it and throw a paintball at it, that's literally it, and if you know where it spawns you just go there and paintball, it's so incredibly shallow as a mecanic that it needed to be changed. Same goes for seeing weapon's trees for exemple, same goes for inventory management, same goes for the graphical improvement, same goes for 99% of the stuff they changed. Only thing i would miss from the old games is the arts of MHG which in one way are already there, since weapons such as the long sword literally got improved with parry in mind due to the fact that literally everyone played long sword valor in MHG, and the fact that you could craft basically any decoration, especially with how annoying it was to farm for them in mhw. I'm not saying MHW or MHR are perfect, they have tons of issues of their own, but compared to the old games, newer players not having to play the old games is more of a blessing than anything, and i'm honestly glad that capcom had the balls to rethink the way the game was structured even though it meant remaking everything instead of letting the game rot in it's outdated game mecanics out of fear of backlash like way too many devs do.
Also the alatreon fight in Iceborn is the best fight of the entire series i don't wanna hear anything

"The world community overshadowed and replaced the entire original Monster Hunter community." I don't find that to be true. World expanded the community. The original players are still there. I stared on Tri and played every previous and subsequent game that I could get my hands on. Seeing as I am a human, and by default, wholly unoriginal in my thinking, its not a huge leap in logic to think that some people got World and did the same thing, playing previous entries that were accessible.
Honestly, I can't see the World experience as an "Isolated" experience. Rise kept the open maps and introduced better traversal around them. It built upon world. Rise suffers from what I cann the "Dark Souls 2" effect. Its still a fantastic game on its own, its only brought down in value when placed against its peers, that is to say, other MH games. The worst MH game is still a fantastic game in its own right (Not saying Rise is the worst MH game, but to some it could be). My biggest issue with rise was the drastic drop in difficulty and the obnoxious trend of making every single endemic life some kind of utlilty. If Spiritbirds were just used as "buffs", then the game wouldn't throw an Uber Rainbow Spiritbird into every enclosed encounter. The game makes it clear that your hunter is at their hypothetical 100% only when you have max spirit juice, which turns the SBs from a fun buff to a map-wide, mini fetch quest.
I find the idea that the old fans are being "shut out" as absurd. As a community, you should want it to grow and maintain. World did that, and honestly Capcom would be foolish to go back to the old formula when they nearly perfected it in World. I have yet to run into an OG fan that thinks in this manner. You say that the game is still good but you worry that the game is at risk of losing its original sense of self. But as a veteran hunter and diehard fan of this franchise, I cannot in good faith agree that more people hunting, laughing, and raging as they smack (and get smacked by) large, fantastically designed monsters is in any way a bad thing.
This all comes down to trusting Capcom. They have always put their entire being into this series. They keep it grounded, they leave out all signs of the real world, no pandering to any side, no mention of any nonsense, left or right. This is their golden child, and we need to trust them to continue making it even better, just as they've done for the last twenty years.

The most annoying thing ever, is the monster sitting between load zones, and a little mistep to hit him will load the other area, it sucks so much, paintball system is also a pain.
And for the dudes saying it was much harder?! Nah, you can abuse the loading atea system to heal with no problem, you also get healed with a potion instantly (even though stationary) as opposed to 5th Gen where you have to chug the whole thing while slowly walking, and you can lose a % of the heal.
Also, Freaking Mega Dash juice is OP af!
I've started with world, and I'm clearing the entirety of Gen U (finishing level 10 advanced) and the only monster that made me fail a quest ( literally one failed quest so far) was surprisingly zinogre.

Not really, 4th gen and late 3rd gen, ruined MH. All atmosphere was lost to over saturated colors that will literally burn your retinas out and all the difficulty and preparation was abandoned in favor of the boss rush we see today. All sense of reality was lost to silliness and moe crap etc... I'm exaggerating of course, but the mentality of doomerism in this community is so annoying man. This saga changes so much every generation and every time the same voices resurge to claim the end is near, meanwhile the games keep getting bigger and bigger and the series future keep getting more and more assure. Some people can't be happy ni matter what

It gets even worse when people use their "veteran status" and proceed to shame on anyone because they're "not true hunters" or "don't know what the franchise is really about".
Like, got it. You don't like the changes, but no one cares about "how immersive it is to pinpoint a monster's location using a PAINTBALL" or "how having a tent at the camp makes you sloppy because I forgor to prep at the hub". It's so absurd it's awkward.

There're a lot of hate against new games because, somehow, people think "hard/inconvenient = peak game design/iMmErSiVe" even though most older games were just limited due to hardware or had design choice intended to give some extra resource management that didn't really brought anything to immersion, like paintball for tracking or getting completely static while consuming items (which didn't make much sense as much as one could try stretching it and thus were either changed or straight up removed).
Edit: thought about a better example.

Why would you whine about the game getting better ? Nobody is stopping you from staying on older MH games.

The fuck? As someone who started with gen 2 I can safely say: no. The fifth gen was the best thing that could have ever happened to the franchise.

I'd argue that a lot of newer gen players would want to go back and try. Most people would not want to buy decades old console just to play decades old game. If they were to port older title to PC, it would pretty much solve the problem.

guess what? your argument about the 5th gen BURGER SHOP analogy on the entire series as a whole falls flat as the DEV's always wanted to make MONSTER HUNTER immersive, since 2004 all the way to 2005 Freedom unit etc. the DEV'S have always tried to spice the hunting immersion by ADDING: WEATHERS and seasons, underwater, VERTICAL climbing and the latest additions such as TURF WARS, scout flies, SEMI OPEN MAPS, wirebugs and mounts.
Saying the original cheeseburger being remove in menu doesn't make sense, all games needs to evolve and MONSTER HUNTER is evolving for the better as the franchise has two developers the MAINLINE and the portable, having the freedom to express their ideas in to fruition without forcing the fanbase into the corner, besides it's not like the old games are being remove, people can still access them if they truly wish to relive the entire experience.
by the way, Main reason people don't play the other MH games is because they're not stupid enough into paying money to buy an outdated game hardware just to play the older titles.

What a clickbait title. No, no it didnt. However salty old hipsters who liked the game only because it was niche and not very well known will complain about it like it killed their dog. The changes made in World were so good that when I went on to Rise it felt like a massive downgrade, like I was going back and playing a previous title not the next one in the series. If you hate fifth gen, stop being a hipster or just keep playing gen x like most of you jerks do.
