  • Live Service Games or Gaming As A Service has been the current trend that's blown up in the video game industry for the past 10 years or so and while some people think it's a great thing, others consider it an epidemic that's taken over.

    the perfect live service game model:
    1- One currency that can be only earned through playing and NOT paying that lets you buy gameplay changing things and very few cosmetics
    2- Another currency only avaiable through paying that only lets you buy only cosmetics that don't affect gameplay at all
    3- NO F.O.M.O at all, meaning NOTHING in the game will ever expire or be time limited at all
    Extra:
    Having an RPG team to make sure that grinding doesn't feel boring but feels extremely engaging and fun just like some really good RPGs

      Not perfect.
      Remove the live service/online only part!
      Remove grinding. In other words, no buying or grinding for gameplay changing things. No stomping new/lower level players with better gear/perks/etc simply because you're a toxic "no-life" veteran/"pro" player.

I also think the reason indie games are becoming more popular is because the developers actually seem to care about the game being enjoyable for the viewer unlike massive studios with multiple employees but ultimately they do not have the resources to compete with triple A studios in the long run.

    I never play multiplayer games precisely because of the stress it puts on the player so I’ve stuck to single player. I am also of the opinion that if the game is a single player game and is a live service then you don’t own your copy of the game.
    If a game is really good I tend to play it many times for years after it came out. I still play games like Dragon Age Origins and nowadays I always get the message that the Dragon Age servers are down every time I start it. Image that if it were a live service game.
    There are two criteria for me that have to be met for me to buy it, no micro transactions and not live service.

    • @Nurse_Xochitl
      @Nurse_Xochitl Месяц назад +1

      I'm okay with microtransactions on the condition it's not P2W/gambling and that the game in question is free or very low priced to begin with. Developers do need to be able to eat after all. :)
      The problem is, most microtransactions are done wrong... and worse shoehorned into full priced games.
      Other than that, I agree with your criteria. :)
      Game ownership is required, not optional. Non-manipulative practices only is required, not optional. Failure to meet these basic requirements = no purchase for me. I will even turn down request from friends who offer to buy me such games that don't meet the requirements, for example Battlebit. Battlebit is a live service game (no offline bot mode/campaign).

    I may be biased because I have been playing since October 2017 but Fortnite is on an entirely different level. Yes it's fun, yes the cosmetics are what pulls people in a lot of the times but with how massive and accessible it is, I don't see it dying in the next 10 years. Eventually it will die obviously but with how much they are putting into the game it's kinda wild to say it will die as early as these other games.
    With OG 2, UE5, UEFN, Creative, Lego, Festival, Rocket Racing and the new upcoming Disney Collab "metaverse", I don't see Fortnite dying anytime soon.

    I might be in the minority here but I genuinely love live service games and only begin to dislike them when the game becomes unfun. I think apex fell off really hard for me around season 13 or 14 while I absolutely loved seasons 3, 4, and 7. For me each match of these games is a story and when you reach the end you can just continue again and again whether you're getting your ass beat or not. The thing that brings the most enjoyment for me is when you get into a match and throughout the whole match it's clear you're so evenly matched you don't know who's going to win, that competitive nature is what makes these games great. I'm not a huge fan of fomo but I don't really want these types of games to disappear (I know they won't) having a game get constant updates with years of support is awesome, they just need to find a way to keep that content consistently high quality. (especially when it comes to studios like EA, ubisoft, or activision, they make so much fucking money there's 0 excuse for them to be bumping out terrible updates)

    • @Seoul_Soldier
      @Seoul_Soldier 4 месяца назад

      I would like live service games more if they weren't disgusting money-pits full of FOMO, over-priced cosmetics, abusive battle passes, and bad matchmaking. They COULD but great, but they generally aren't. They are bad for the gaming industry as a whole and are the main reason it is currently imploding. And I don't know about you, but I never feel "evenly matched" in really any of these games. Either I'm stomping my opponents or I'm getting stomped. It never feels fair and generally isn't fun, which is why I don't play them.
      Live services could have been awesome, but thanks to executives being greedy and gamers mindlessly buying dumb crap they are just expensive frustration simulators pretending to be video games. If people like you are the audience for live service games then maybe I need to stop gaming altogether, because I couldn't disagree with you more if I tried to.

Corporations see something is popular, they go in too late, the don't understand why it's popular but copy it anyways, the move to production too quickly to try to catch the trend so they cut corners and steamroll pass steps, the first thing that blew up already has all the mindshare and for all those reasons it's logical that 97% of anything won't last.
