Some people will say Redline MTL is fine, and I'm sure it is, but something like Redline D4 ATF is actually preferred in these particular transmissions. Yes, ATF in a manual. ATF is sort of a general purpose hydraulic oil and has many uses, including the power steering systems in many BMWs. What I've read is: D4 ATF is the "right" fluid for an E46 manual, MTL is a little thicker but fine, especially in hotter environments, and somehting like Redline MT90 (or some 75W90) is needlessly thick, especially in colder weather. Of course you can use Valvoline ATF (red bottle), Royal Purple, Pentosin, or another synthetic ATF, but a lot of people report "notchiness" going away with Redline D4 ATF or MTL.
Nice video but you should be level to get accurate reading of being full. Back tires on the ground so I think you are slightly less then full. Nice video.
Helpful video thank you. I followed your instructions, also watched the Bavarian Autosport video for 2nd opinions, and changed the fluid on my 100k mile 04 325i. I also found the fluid to contain some metal filings but did not notice any real change in the feel of the shift! Maybe it's psychosomatic.... 😉. I used Pentosin MTF2 which is the correct OEM fluid for BMWs, a little more expensive but considered better quality.
I have a 2002 530i, and I know that the ZF S5D320Z manual transmission that I swapped into my car doesn't take traditional manual transmission fluid. Instead it actually uses ATF. Do a little digging find out what specific tranny you have and find out what fluid you should be using. You'll find a lot of great articles detailing what can happen by running too thick of an oil in these transmissions, and what ratio of ATF to gear oil you should be running based on specific application (ie. track use vs commuter car and summer vs winter) I didn't watch your video tbh, I just saw the two bottles of gear oil and wrote this, just my $.02
TY This weekend I am going to see "IF: this solves my problem. 1st. changing gears made a noise but changed OK. Then once it may or may not, now it will not go in gear at all.Sure hope I just need fluid in my 318ic.
Gear box oil should be at normal working temperature before draining. Not having the car on the level means you'll not drain as well as it should be done. Filling up will also be an issue as the reservoir and box will not be fully filled. Best change drain bolts with new magnetic type to catch the metal particles. A new refill plug is also worth doing on a high mileage example car such as this...

The gear oil was recently changed by my mechanic and while it shifts fine when it's at operating temperature, I've noticed it's very notchy and a struggle to shift it into first and then second when cold. I do suppose the wrong gear oil was used. It's a 5 speed manual. What gear oil do you recommend for it? Is yours notchy when cold too?
You didn't jack up the rear to keep the vehicle level. "Lower than normal gear oil level". But I guess ain't as bad as the rear of the vehicle being higher than the front.

@@vforvandetta832 It's just simple logic, if you drain the gearbox then find out that you can't get the fill plug off for whatever reason then you can't get oil back into your gearbox and your car is immobile until you do.
I would be less concerned with the transmission fluid than with the obvious oil leak all over the undercarriage of the car, I mean dude is there any oil left in the crankcase? LOL, fix the seal or gasket thats leaking, fire hazard to say the least. Good vid, simple job.
I have a 2004 325CI e46 - 158K manual transmission fluid - manual states never change it but to check it every 30K miles which it has never been !!!! Now I have a code P2761 car running horribly for two months $1500 mechanic nothing works - car jerks releasing clutch sometimes when shifting - sluggish going up hills - car loud power horrible - dealership claims it is $3800 catalytic converters yet no check engine line - claim back pressure test revealed numbers 2 and 3. I am so upset I cannot find a qualified bmw mechanic in NY to help me - they are awful
I highly doubt the catalytic converters are bad. I had 180k miles with stock cats. And usually p2761 is the torque converter code. Do you have an automatic?
