    Great video! I'm dying to get my own Renaissance lute and came across these so I'm really glad to have come across your review. Congrats on the new axe, it looks like a great buy!

    Over two years later I am considering this exact model from Roosebeck. Glad I found this.

  • @JCDixonR8

    I bought a Roosebeck 8 course about 2 years ago and love the workmanship and sound. I have a lot of trouble tuning it, and many of the pegs have broken. I removed all the treble strings in the pairs and
    lowered the bass strings to give me 2 octaves. I now have no more pegs to spare and hope I can order
    a set from the maker.

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  4 года назад +2

      Yeah the tuning pegs are thin and hard to turn so I can totally see that happening. You might be able to go with beefier oud tuning pegs. I got a set of twelve for my oud for around $20.

    I'm saving up for a 7 course travel Roosebeck lute, and your playing helps convince me that I'm making the correct decision in doing so. Thank you for the wonderful video!

      That was the first time playing it for me in that video. I've since used it in a BudLight commercial and for a video game. It's almost paid for itself and I'm getting better each time I pick it up.

    I had considered buying one of these but a lute player was "retiring" due to arthritis so I bought his lute off him. Made by Daniel Hachez (better known for his basses) in the 70s.

    Hi! I'm looking to get my first lute and I just can't afford the ones at leluthdore that people seem to recommend. I'm considering buying the one you reviewed, it looks great and is half the price compared to the ones at leluthdore. As a follow up to this video one year later, I would love to hear your thoughts about this instrument. My main concerns are the movable frets and the tuning pegs. Did any of the frets move by accident and if so was it hard to move it back to it's original position? Are the tuning pegs easy/ok to use and do they keep tuning over time to a satisfactory level? Any other issues? Would you recommend it to someone else today? Any answers/thoughts on my concerns are greatly appreciated. Cheers

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  4 года назад +5

      I totally understand not wanting to break the bank on a lute purchase. I’m happy with my Roosebeck lute though if I had it to do over again I would get the 6 course and not the 8 course. I didn’t want to lose the range of a standard classical so I tune the bottom two strings to F and D. But having 8 pairs of strings makes it difficult to just pick it up and play it like a guitar. I have to concentrate more. The friction tuners are much better than the ones on my oud. Still 1:1 “gear” ratio so to speak. But they stay in tune. I too was worried about the frets but that has not been an issue. They are very tight. I’m thinking of getting a saz with similar frets that do move more and are supposed to.

    This is lovely! I'm looking into getting a lute for the first time, myself, and I was hoping you might be able to answer a question I just can't seem to find an answer for: What is the definitive difference between a travel lute and a standard Renaissance lute? I can't find any concrete answers, and I'm not sure which one to buy. Is it just durability? Any insight would be appreciated!

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  4 года назад

      I don't know much about them but I suppose the difference would be scale (size), sustain and tone.

    • @TomStrahle
      @TomStrahle  4 года назад +2

      Probably a 6 course lute of some kind. I wish now that's what I had gotten but I wanted to have the lower range. Roosebeck makes a 6 course lute. Plays like a guitar with a capo at the 3rd fret.

      Not sure about that. So tough to try them out because very few, I know of none, stores carry them. I just took a shot on this one. It does what I need it to do. But the low end is lacking a bit on this one.
