Awesome videography, I like the closeups of the right and left hand. I notice your right hand pinky rests on the Lute, is this something that is the recommended position or is it unique to your playing? Thanks for sharing! 🇨🇦
It is necessary to steady the right hand - you will notice that the right arm does not rest on the upper bout. 19th century guitarists (and others) also used the pinky for support.
An artistic suggestion! Try to incorporate some photos of the tabulature you are playing from. I am sure many of your viewers aren't familiar with its uniqueness. Lovely playing. Please keep this enchanting music alive!
This is a beautiful rendition of a beautiful Dowland's Fancy . Do you have a work number for this Fancy ? I have got the whole works by Dowland but cannot recognize this piece. Thank you and all the best !!! Congrats !!!
Beautiful playing, instrument and player :) if I could ask, what explains that strange right hand position? It’s entirely different than on a classical guitar. It often appears that the index finger not just alternates with the thumb but at times even crosses over it. Are there particular advantages of this technique for tone or to facilitate particular musical ideas, or is it more about following lute tradition?
Always a pleasure to have dowland in my youtube homepage. Although I did notice one thing, your pinky on your right hand is pretty consistently going against the grain of the rest of your hand and resting on the instrument. It's clearly not affecting your playing, but it's not good for tendon health in the long term. Great playing in every other sense though!
Almost all lute players historically ((and modern) rest their pinky on the soundboard- in the renaissance, players abandoned the plectrum but maintained the general hand position for playing thumb-index passages. With later music, it helps the player to find the lower courses on lutes with many courses. As long as one learns it correctly, there should be no tension in the hand and thus no physical strain. Hope this helps!
Beautiful. And the music is nice too!

Hi Gary, thank you, I'm happy you like it!
Resting a pinkie on the soundboard is actually a correct position for playing the lute.

Hi, thank you so much! This is the technique used for renaissance lute.
Very beoutiful. Where you can get a lute for starters in lithuania ?
Hi Lukas, I don't really know where you can buy a lute in Lithuania... You can check Muzikkon, they do deliver them everywhere.
Great- I'm wondering how it was recorded? were mikes used, and I'm wondering what kind? Possibly just a camcorder?

@@boblob2003 I knew that historically many lute players did this, but i never knew that there was a proper way of doing it. Interesting stuff
