Norwegian here. This is something I’ve wanted from Norway for such a long time. The pop-songs we’ve sent the recent years have become stale to me. Queen of The Kings and Spirit in The Sky were both great songs, but this is what I think Norway needed to send this year. I felt that this stood out tremendously from the generic pop-songs from this MGP final. Finally something that feels Norwegian and Scandinavian, finally singing in Norwegian, finally having cultural elements in a song, I absolutely love it. I know that probably a majority of Europe won’t understand what this song makes us Norwegians feel, but I won’t be disappointed. It’s similar to Spain’s entrant last year, the Spanish didn’t care what Europe thought of it because it represented something special for Spain, likewise what «ulveham» represents for us.
This is special, it makes none Norwegias feel like middle aged viking for 3 min. At least for me its an emotional storm with visuons from the TV show vikings, a few trips to Norway ,aurora borealis and some Scandinavian TV thrillers. Feels like I've been hypnotized and traveled back in time . Its Norway sights ,sounds ,taste and smells. Winner or not , its a masterclass performance. Norway should be extreamly proud with that song.
I know it's early, but I'm pretty sure this is already my winner of 2024. My mind is blown, my feelings and emotions are all over the place when I listen to their song. Just phenomenal.
Same! I've been addicted to this song from the moment I listened to the studio track for the very first time and the live performance elevated the whole thing to an unimaginable level for me. I can't see any other ESC song this year impress me more than (or even as much as) Ulveham, it's almost impossible.
Gåte is just amazing, fantastic power and energy. The voice from Mother Earth! ❤️ Beautiful Gunnhild - this is what Eurovision (the world) needs right now! 12 points 🥇
"ulveham" is the first song of the season to make me cry! it's so moving and powerful. it really comes to life in the live - gunnhild leaning on the rock and "howling" is the first "winner's moment" I've seen so far. just gorgeous! well done Gate
this is my new favourite entry that norway have ever sent !! so cultural, so unique, so mesmerising and so powerful, and those vocals are just wow. the vibe is vibing to the max
also i just love how Gunnhild's performance just oozes the betrayal and rage the main character of the song is feeling. i listen to a lot of nordic folk music and more often than not these songs are old folk tales, sagas and spells, ways to preserve and memorise the stories and myths (I riden så by Gjallarhorn and Karhun synty by Noiduin and Myrrys come to mind). Ulveham is a tragedy, and that is present in everything from the style of singing to the way Gunnhild weaves the story on stage, how the band is moving almost animalistically at times, pressed by the outrage. there's gravitas to this. i could talk about it all day.
I love this song so very dearly. It reaches into the depths of my soul. The verses are of this simple, Scandinavian style that I remember from my childhood, and Gunnhild’s voice is so powerful.
This band is really something else, love the traditional elements - and Gunnhilds voice is out of this world! Love the message about the fight agains oppression and the fight for freedom. The primal scream is for all of us, a big wake-up call!
Love this choice for Norway, it's so different from their hyperpop entries of late. Kind of goes back to 1995/Secret Garden vibes. Huge potential for jury and televote appeal! Only issue for me is I get motion sickness thinking about Gunnhild on the fast-moving turntable 😝
No. Nocturne for me was one of the favourite of all the Eurovisions entries sent by Norway and one of the best winner in Eurovision. This is not in the same caliber.
@hurmur9528 the path from classical music to metal music is very short! Both Nocturne and Ulveham opens with the Keyharp‐instrument, and the both are etherical in sound. Nocturne and Ulveham could literally be twin songs where one is the the good and gentle and the other is the naughty and wild, just like twins are seen stereotypically!
I was in Trondheim Spektrum for the final and it was so magical. Im so happy for Gåte, they were my winners all along (Im actually related to Gunnhild now i come to think about it) and i think they will do great in Malmö and potentially give us our first top 3 performance since Alexander Rybak with Fairytale
Thanks for recognising the quality of Gunnhild’s voice! I have watched several react videos with wannabe vocal “experts” claiming her voice cracks, failing to recognise the Norwegian traditional singing style of kveding or kulokk (kulning in Swedish). Gunhild was only 13 years old at the first performance that was just her and her brother in 1999 - and I was there! :)
I don't know if I overact when I say that this is most daring and risky entry that a scandinavian country (and I only consider Denmark, Norway and Sweden as scandinavian) has sent in years. This could bomb in the Semi-Final, just get through and get almost nothing from the Televote in the Final (France 2022 and Spain 2023-style) or could be a real dark horse-contender to win the Televote in the Final (Ukraine 2021). It's totally unpredictable and I'm excited to see how this will work in Malmö. When it comes to me, this choice makes me so happy. The song was already good when I first listened to it before the MGP-heat and the first live-performance totaly blew me away. Sidenote: I would secretly give such acts like Go_A, Måneskin and Käärijä a huge credit for this choice. They've showed in the last few years what's possible now in Eurovision when you're just doing your thing and believe in yourself. Even if people don't like it, they will talk about it. Huge respect to the norwegians for this choice! I hope that it will get it's deserved pay-off.
yea its definitely the riskiest entry from those 3 countries, but Sweden and Denmark are literally the most risk-adverse countries in the contest 😂 totally agree with your final point there too
@@ESCTom Denmark actually had a shot with Fuld Effekt in 2022, but I think it wasn't too popular with the danish public? Well, at least it was in the selection. And Sweden...well...the only thing that comes in mind is Pagan Fury in 2019, but they really got smashed in their heat.
I wasn't fascinated by it after semi-final however after final performance they grew on me so much. I believe, they are my number 1 at the moment (I forgot my own top😅). This is really something special

I absolutely love this, I listened to the performance with earphones in just before I watched this and there are so many layers to the soundscape in this song. It's fantastic. I really hope that they do well.
Heia Gåte!! Fun fact: the person doing the lights for NRK is the same person who did the lights for Gåte when they first started out! Also Gunnhild sang at my cousins wedding when she was only 14 years old. So happy they won ☺
I hosted a viewing party on Saturday, it was 9 of us and everyone gave Gåte 12 points. Eurofans, non-Eurofans, British, German, French, Irish, metalheads, pop afficionados... Gåte was on everyone top score! Shows that they have a lot of chances in May among the crowd of people discovering the songs for the first time! ❤
The song and music are sp organic and enchanting, the first time I listen to it was like...-----...and the second time I heard it I just LOVED it, the more I listen to it, the more spellbound I get. LOVE IT

In the beginning, is this the "old traditional folclore instrument, nobody has ever seen before" Mans Zelmerlöw has sung about in Love, Love, Peace, Peace?
i just love them and have for 20 years. i'm so excited that they're bringing their magic to Eurovision, and more people are going to find out about their music. my winner of the year, i don't think anything can top this. 12 points from Finland.

Was a bit worried about it after the semi-final, but it truly came together in the final. It feels like they really made this song their own after the lyrics change. This is going to be a magical performance in Malmö. I really love how the spinning platform and the camera work are building up towards the big note like a crescendo and I can totally see the audience get swept up in it. As a song it's more approachable than Eaea I think, so it's probably going to do pretty well with the televote and top 3 or top 5 is certainly possible, but I'm not sure if the juries will go crazy for it. They don't seem to appreciate unusual singing techniques that much, even if the singer is technically flawless. Can totally see this sitting at 90 jury points and 260 televote points like Shum or In Corpore Sano.
Best review i've heard so far. The bands history is an important part of the tale for me. They have been around for so long and they are really unique and experienced! Go Gåte!
The studio version was my 2nd place for MGP this year, with Gothminister in first place. The live performance completely blew my mind though, & I became terrified that Keiino would win. I still prefer We Come Alive as a song, but this is a better fit for Eurovision. It's currently my #1.
As we say here on nisseberget, old Norway…just w o w……that song was kinda anonymous from the studio production…but just woooow…it blew me TOTALLY away breathless!!! Subwoolfer,Tix….forget them…that was……I have no words to describe it…weve missed a scene performance for so many years…what a voice, what a stormy set on the scene…those pictures…everything…just…do we have a tiny small chance to W I N EUROVOSION this year…15 years since Rybak-Fairytale….OSLO25?????????????????????????????
Great review yet again! It really surprised me that the Danish and Dutch juries totally wrote off Ulveham (which I now think is a masterpiece ... compared to the other entries). Could it be that the jurors had only heard the studio version and made up their minds before seeing the performances? I recall basically writing Ulveham off when I first heared the studio version. That totally changed when I saw the live performance at SF2. Another thing that might have put Gåte / Ulveham at a disadvantage jurywise was their relative obscurity compared to KEIINO being relatively well known in the Eurovision world.
Really liking the vocals and staging and the different sound of it. Should definitely qualify for the final and be on the left hand side of the scoreboard on the Saturday night.
Hi Tom, I really appreciate your Gåte-reaction! It's been superinteresting to see your reaction change a little bit about this song. Thank You for making reactionvideos❤️ You are a part of my winter/spring every year!😅 Love from Norway
I am a Norwegian...... and for the first time in many many years I am going to let all the glitter and glam and shitti popmusic torture me trough the Eurowishion show just to enjoi Gunhild and Gåte winn the show...... I have playd all there studio albums into bits and pieces.....
That’s both very interesting in itself, and also a winning factor for ESC if the herding calls resonates with cultural heritage across the whole continent! I’d say Fairytale won in 2009 partly because the rythm and stage dance resonated with both Nordic and Eastern European folk dance, so the northern and eastern countries came together in that song❤
as someone that doesnt speak norwegian i couldn't hear the difference between the first version and the one with the changed lyrics. so there is no issue in that regard, it sounds just as amazing as before
Funny hearing all the people commenting "Thank God for the televote!" given the 50/50 split had Keiino winning by 3! But if they nail the performance I think this can win. It's the only thing out that gives me "winner vibes" at this point.
Love this song. To me it represents not only Norway, but Scandinavia, Iceland and Finland. All of us from the North. The keyharp from Sweeden, the language we have in common (some of us: ), the nature here in the north and the people, of course. I'm looking forward to hear the other songs from Europe. Love from Norway❤
I believe the public will get behind this song but sadly I don’t think the judges will . We need more open minded judges ones who aren’t afraid to go for something more unique .
First song in Norwegian since 2006. Norway has recently gone "user friendly accessible".... borderline nursery rhyme stuff at times. This is a serious change of tone. It has arty austerity and a cutting edge. Definitely top five potential.
This song has so much top 5 potential For the televote we have intense moments, introguong staging, fill effort from everyone, something new, really cool elements, sick recap moment. But then for the juries they still have insane vocals, a very artsy staging and a musically stunning song. When I listened to the studio version for tje first time I was like, yeah sure the chorus is sick but it's just two verses and 2 choruses nothing special I don't get the hype. Safe to say I was blown away from their life performance anf ive watchef their life performance like 10 times now. This wil definitly reach my top 3 inless we get an insanely good year
I reckon something similar to the mossy house from the Folklore set on the Eras Tour would go great for the spinning platform. Great video as per usual :D
Thank you for the reaction - I think you are right about so many things. This is just captivating, and sooo sooo good. Changing the lyrics just made it better - the story became a bit clearer (for those who understand Norwegian). I believe the juries might grow to like this as much as people in general. There is enough time between now and May to fall completely in love with it, even for haters ;) I mean, what the heck are the criteria here, if jurors - who are supposed to recognize quality - don't reward Gåte? I am hoping there is a reason for us to have faith in "Ulveham" becoming a strong contender for the win...
So very happy we decided to go with Gåte this year. Such an epic song and performance, will stand out. I love that we're sending a song in Norwegian again, that it has such a strong folksy feel to it. This is absolutely a great representation of Norwegian culture with the old folklore inspiration, the kveding, and as much as I personally don't like using nynorsk myself - I love that this song is done in nynorsk, it just adds to it. While I adore Keiino as a group, have many of their songs downloaded, their song this year just didn't do it for me (but they were absolutely robbed with Monument last time). I want epic from them, not a retro bop.
It has been a while since I've been this enthusiastic about Norway's entry. It's so cool! Love the mystical atmosphere, the energy, the buildup, the Norwegian language. It's a great change from the quite gimmicky stuff Norway has sent in recent years. Excellent! 👏
huh.... I didn't even know Eurovision was happening already, and as a Norwegian I was surprised by who is representing us, I used to listen to Gåte a lot in the early 2000s, cool to see they're still around.
I think this song is a love letter from modern Norway to Neo-romanticism era Norway. It's all about painting a picture of a fairtytale Norway ( The trolls killing people and Hulder-women kidnapping men in the mountains fairytale, not the typical happy fairytale). Gives me mad goosebumps listening to it, but understandably not something to win Eurovision. Love from Norway
Tom I have a suggestion. Could you add the performers' photos, above or under the year, in each statistic. Of course, it's not going to be a big image but a square image equal to the size of the square that has the ranking like 5th or 10th
i heard people saying this is new fulenn and eaea, i thought like no what this is clearly a first place contender, but i remembered last year some people said eaea is the new fulenn, i never believed it but they were right😭 it still doesn’t exclude the fact that i just love the three songs, wish we have such strong folk bops every year💚
General question. Does somebody knows what Tom keeps saying before the song? It sounds nice, but I can't quite make it out. Sounds like: "Wanna know my secret bang" ?
I like this song Even i hope for keiino to win but i look forowed to se this song in Malmø. And hope them win to. Is strong song to and i selv i com for Norway to smil❤😊
I think they should do something with the costumes. Some light-reflecting fabrics to make their bodies glimmer. She should tie her hair back with some beautiful headpiece letting the hair flow on her (naked?) back with some product to make it shine under the spotlights.
they have have been around forever, though they did go on a hiatus for a while. i think my favorite track of theirs is "Sjå Attende" ruclips.net/video/qpJXLfOk0Lk/видео.html
I think Gåte will get more jury points than Go_A, and similar televotes. Prediction is too early but based on last year's level, I'd say 3rd place. Better than Alessandra And like they said themselves about having to rewrite, it was an improvement and they were happy to do it and it was the best preparation they could have had. Nothing but upside
I really do love the norwegian ESC25 entry. The best choice they could have made in their MGP selection. Tho I had a soft spot for Miia. For me the last part is some messy chaos of her vocals. Im sure they figure that out in Sweden. Easily qualifies to the Finals. I say minimal top 10 and with a big change doing even Top 5. They are my 2nd fav after Bambie Thug. ( and I only have a top 3 as of yet, but hey the season is just coming full steam) Good luck Gåte
My 3rd fav is Raiven from Slovenia. Very nice discovering what she has been doing. Interesting works from her. I love great talented artists in their niche. For me its more interesting than other average material, we know already over the years. I hope more countries being revealed this edition will show their talent, power, creativity, originality and connections in sharing in non biased ways!! Have a Great ESC season. Waterloo 2024. Keep on posting Tom!!
NRK has promised that they wont repeat the mistake from 2023 and NOT elevate the performance, so they are literally saying that the Gåte performance definitely will be elevated and perfected for Eurovision!
Norway Gåte ,Many people are not aware of what she actually sings, which in my opinion is a cruel text from the old days. And i am from Norway ! The text copied from newspaper: She summarizes "Ulveham", based on an old medieval ballad, as the story of an evil stepmother who casts a curse on her stepdaughter - who turns into a wolf running in the forest forever. She only loses her wolf's hide if she drinks her own brother's blood. "There will be a kind of happy - but cruel - ending when she meets the stepmother on horseback in the forest, throws herself at her, rips out her heart and drinks the blood. Because the stepmother is pregnant with her brother - thereby the curse is lifted
While "wolf skin" isn't strictly wrong, as it is the literal translation of the word "Ulveham", it doesn't have the right feel and I think it's missing something in the context of the rest of the poem. I would instead translate it to "Form of the Wolf" 🐺
Shape-shifting and skin-walking are both English language folklore concepts. But I agree that it's hard to translate. Tolkien dubbed Beorn a "skin-changer" as his translation of the Nordic concept _hamskifter._
I was the one to submitted the current translation and yeah I agree that would be better. I only chose wolf skin becuase thats what the previous translation used in the old version 😊
This is the only song that says Eurovision winner thus far. I do think a downside to the spinning platform is that she has to search for the camera on the closeup shots and it's not the most seamless.

Subwoolfer,Tix….forget them…that was……I have no words to describe it…weve missed a scene performance for so many years…what a voice,what a stormy set on the scene…those pictures…everything…just…do we have a tiny small chance to W I N EUROVOSION this year…15 years since Rybak-Fairytale….OSLO25?????????????????????????????
Best ever from my country🇳🇴
❤️🇳🇴
This is art expressed in it`s purest cultural nordic form.
I am a Norwegian...... and for the first time in many many years I am going to let all the glitter and glam and shitti popmusic torture me trough the Eurowishion show just to enjoi Gunhild and Gåte winn the show...... I have playd all there studio albums into bits and pieces.....
Da er vi to.
It also echoes Celtic Irish Eastern European Sheperdess-ish sound, proving that culture trancsends borders
Celtic is far away from Norrønt
It's the only thing out that gives me "winner vibes" at this point.
absolutely brilliant
Norway have finally given us something that the jury will go for as well as the televote. This and Ukraine have winner potential.
The best reaction of Gåte - Ulveham,
....... and I have watched many!!!!
🙏🏻
See you in Oslo 2025 💚❤️
great video. Gåte is going to bring authenticity to Eurovision. This will be a strong contender this year.
First song in Norwegian since 2006. Norway has recently gone "user friendly accessible".... borderline nursery rhyme stuff at times. This is a serious change of tone. It has arty austerity and a cutting edge. Definitely top five potential.
This song has so much top 5 potential
For the televote we have intense moments, introguong staging, fill effort from everyone, something new, really cool elements, sick recap moment.
This wil definitly reach my top 3 inless we get an insanely good year
i do think that we are on track for a very strong year this year
hands down the best entry in eurovision history
Very good song
One of the potential winner with Ireland and France
I reckon something similar to the mossy house from the Folklore set on the Eras Tour would go great for the spinning platform. Great video as per usual :D
its so good !!! i love it . Along with France
I am hoping there is a reason for us to have faith in "Ulveham" becoming a strong contender for the win...
as a Norwegian person i didnt notice that they changed the lyrics until marion ravn adresed it after they sang.
i would have had absolutely no idea myself either
Excellent! 👏
❤️❤️❤️❤️🇧🇻🇧🇻🇧🇻🇧🇻 No words needed!! GÅTE is amazing!! 😍🇧🇻 What a show, song and voice!!! 😍 Come on 🇧🇻❤️
huh.... I didn't even know Eurovision was happening already, and as a Norwegian I was surprised by who is representing us, I used to listen to Gåte a lot in the early 2000s, cool to see they're still around.
👍😍😍❤️🤘
💖💖🇧🇻
As a Norwegian, I was rooting for KEiiNO but gåte is growing on me❤
Tusen takk ❤❤❤
I think this song is a love letter from modern Norway to Neo-romanticism era Norway. It's all about painting a picture of a fairtytale Norway ( The trolls killing people and Hulder-women kidnapping men in the mountains fairytale, not the typical happy fairytale). Gives me mad goosebumps listening to it, but understandably not something to win Eurovision. Love from Norway
❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉 yeeee Gåte
Together with Ukraine a potential contender to win the Eurovision song contest. Depends on the juries how well it does in the end.
feels like winner already
Tom I have a suggestion. Could you add the performers' photos, above or under the year, in each statistic. Of course, it's not going to be a big image but a square image equal to the size of the square that has the ranking like 5th or 10th
yea ive thought about it, but that would be just way too much work right now and im already struggling
On a side note this song really slaps at the gym 😂
i heard people saying this is new fulenn and eaea, i thought like no what this is clearly a first place contender, but i remembered last year some people said eaea is the new fulenn, i never believed it but they were right😭 it still doesn’t exclude the fact that i just love the three songs, wish we have such strong folk bops every year💚
hmmmmmm i dont see this as an Eaea, its much less esoteric and niche IMO
General question. Does somebody knows what Tom keeps saying before the song? It sounds nice, but I can't quite make it out. Sounds like: "Wanna know my secret bang" ?
yep you got it, its from Ukraine 2019
Who knows. Maybe one year, an Irish band will participate with a song called "My secret bang".
I think this will be a top 10, maybe top 5 ik Malmö ❤❤ I love it!
this year, so far, its much easier to list songs that you dont like or dont care for. its insane how strong this year is already.
This is my winner, very unlikely that something could top this.
My winner so far
Normally I don’t like when reactors talk much while listening to the music. But this was interesting.
I like this song Even i hope for keiino to win but i look forowed to se this song in Malmø. And hope them win to. Is strong song to and i selv i com for Norway to smil❤😊
Må applaudere din "kreative" språkbruk 😄👍
I think they should do something with the costumes. Some light-reflecting fabrics to make their bodies glimmer. She should tie her hair back with some beautiful headpiece letting the hair flow on her (naked?) back with some product to make it shine under the spotlights.
I get that’s you mean but I think that that would take away the timeless feel of it. If they could make a more natural looking glow, that could work
Kinda feels like a native language version of Emily de Forest
Way couldn’t this win??? It could very much win 🥇
they have have been around forever, though they did go on a hiatus for a while.
i think my favorite track of theirs is "Sjå Attende"

I think Gåte will get more jury points than Go_A, and similar televotes. Prediction is too early but based on last year's level, I'd say 3rd place. Better than Alessandra
And like they said themselves about having to rewrite, it was an improvement and they were happy to do it and it was the best preparation they could have had.
( and I only have a top 3 as of yet, but hey the season is just coming full steam)
Good luck Gåte
My 3rd fav is Raiven from Slovenia. Very nice discovering what she has been doing. Interesting works from her.
I love great talented artists in their niche.
For me its more interesting than other average material, we know already over the years.
I hope more countries being revealed this edition will show their talent, power, creativity, originality and connections in sharing in non biased ways!!
Have a Great ESC season.
Waterloo 2024.
Keep on posting Tom!!
🙏🏻
NRK has promised that they wont repeat the mistake from 2023 and NOT elevate the performance, so they are literally saying that the Gåte performance definitely will be elevated and perfected for Eurovision!
Norway Gåte ,Many people are not aware of what she actually sings, which in my opinion is a cruel text from the old days. And i am from Norway ! The text copied from newspaper:
She summarizes "Ulveham", based on an old medieval ballad, as the story of an evil stepmother who casts a curse on her stepdaughter - who turns into a wolf running in the forest forever.
