    Norwegian here. This is something I’ve wanted from Norway for such a long time. The pop-songs we’ve sent the recent years have become stale to me. Queen of The Kings and Spirit in The Sky were both great songs, but this is what I think Norway needed to send this year. I felt that this stood out tremendously from the generic pop-songs from this MGP final. Finally something that feels Norwegian and Scandinavian, finally singing in Norwegian, finally having cultural elements in a song, I absolutely love it. I know that probably a majority of Europe won’t understand what this song makes us Norwegians feel, but I won’t be disappointed. It’s similar to Spain’s entrant last year, the Spanish didn’t care what Europe thought of it because it represented something special for Spain, likewise what «ulveham» represents for us.

      This is special, it makes none Norwegias feel like middle aged viking for 3 min. At least for me its an emotional storm with visuons from the TV show vikings, a few trips to Norway ,aurora borealis and some Scandinavian TV thrillers. Feels like I've been hypnotized and traveled back in time .
      Its Norway sights ,sounds ,taste and smells. Winner or not , its a masterclass performance. Norway should be extreamly proud with that song.

  • @kaiknlast
    @kaiknlast 11 месяцев назад +23

    also i just love how Gunnhild's performance just oozes the betrayal and rage the main character of the song is feeling. i listen to a lot of nordic folk music and more often than not these songs are old folk tales, sagas and spells, ways to preserve and memorise the stories and myths (I riden så by Gjallarhorn and Karhun synty by Noiduin and Myrrys come to mind). Ulveham is a tragedy, and that is present in everything from the style of singing to the way Gunnhild weaves the story on stage, how the band is moving almost animalistically at times, pressed by the outrage. there's gravitas to this. i could talk about it all day.

    • @ZironixNO
      @ZironixNO 10 месяцев назад

      @hurmur9528 the path from classical music to metal music is very short! Both Nocturne and Ulveham opens with the Keyharp‐instrument, and the both are etherical in sound. Nocturne and Ulveham could literally be twin songs where one is the the good and gentle and the other is the naughty and wild, just like twins are seen stereotypically!

    Thanks for recognising the quality of Gunnhild’s voice! I have watched several react videos with wannabe vocal “experts” claiming her voice cracks, failing to recognise the Norwegian traditional singing style of kveding or kulokk (kulning in Swedish).
    Gunhild was only 13 years old at the first performance that was just her and her brother in 1999 - and I was there! :)

  • @zwelfbungt
    @zwelfbungt 11 месяцев назад +23

    I don't know if I overact when I say that this is most daring and risky entry that a scandinavian country (and I only consider Denmark, Norway and Sweden as scandinavian) has sent in years. This could bomb in the Semi-Final, just get through and get almost nothing from the Televote in the Final (France 2022 and Spain 2023-style) or could be a real dark horse-contender to win the Televote in the Final (Ukraine 2021). It's totally unpredictable and I'm excited to see how this will work in Malmö.
    When it comes to me, this choice makes me so happy. The song was already good when I first listened to it before the MGP-heat and the first live-performance totaly blew me away.
    Sidenote: I would secretly give such acts like Go_A, Måneskin and Käärijä a huge credit for this choice. They've showed in the last few years what's possible now in Eurovision when you're just doing your thing and believe in yourself. Even if people don't like it, they will talk about it. Huge respect to the norwegians for this choice! I hope that it will get it's deserved pay-off.

    • @ESCTom
      @ESCTom  11 месяцев назад +4

      yea its definitely the riskiest entry from those 3 countries, but Sweden and Denmark are literally the most risk-adverse countries in the contest 😂

      @@ESCTom Denmark actually had a shot with Fuld Effekt in 2022, but I think it wasn't too popular with the danish public? Well, at least it was in the selection. And Sweden...well...the only thing that comes in mind is Pagan Fury in 2019, but they really got smashed in their heat.

    Its the build up that captivates me.
    Her raw power partners nicely with the stringy relentless melody which carries the song to that intense crashing chorus.
    Vocals are haunting, guitars dance around the shrill vocals and the feel of earthiness really eminates from this song.
    Its a powerful performance on a smaller MGP stage which will no doubt absolutely elevate to a commanding and memorable performance come May.

    Was a bit worried about it after the semi-final, but it truly came together in the final. It feels like they really made this song their own after the lyrics change. This is going to be a magical performance in Malmö. I really love how the spinning platform and the camera work are building up towards the big note like a crescendo and I can totally see the audience get swept up in it.
    As a song it's more approachable than Eaea I think, so it's probably going to do pretty well with the televote and top 3 or top 5 is certainly possible, but I'm not sure if the juries will go crazy for it. They don't seem to appreciate unusual singing techniques that much, even if the singer is technically flawless. Can totally see this sitting at 90 jury points and 260 televote points like Shum or In Corpore Sano.

    Great review yet again! It really surprised me that the Danish and Dutch juries totally wrote off Ulveham (which I now think is a masterpiece ... compared to the other entries). Could it be that the jurors had only heard the studio version and made up their minds before seeing the performances? I recall basically writing Ulveham off when I first heared the studio version. That totally changed when I saw the live performance at SF2. Another thing that might have put Gåte / Ulveham at a disadvantage jurywise was their relative obscurity compared to KEIINO being relatively well known in the Eurovision world.

      That’s both very interesting in itself, and also a winning factor for ESC if the herding calls resonates with cultural heritage across the whole continent! I’d say Fairytale won in 2009 partly because the rythm and stage dance resonated with both Nordic and Eastern European folk dance, so the northern and eastern countries came together in that song❤

    First song in Norwegian since 2006. Norway has recently gone "user friendly accessible".... borderline nursery rhyme stuff at times. This is a serious change of tone. It has arty austerity and a cutting edge. Definitely top five potential.

    This song has so much top 5 potential
    For the televote we have intense moments, introguong staging, fill effort from everyone, something new, really cool elements, sick recap moment.
    But then for the juries they still have insane vocals, a very artsy staging and a musically stunning song.
    When I listened to the studio version for tje first time I was like, yeah sure the chorus is sick but it's just two verses and 2 choruses nothing special I don't get the hype. Safe to say I was blown away from their life performance anf ive watchef their life performance like 10 times now. This wil definitly reach my top 3 inless we get an insanely good year

    Thank you for the reaction - I think you are right about so many things. This is just captivating, and sooo sooo good. Changing the lyrics just made it better - the story became a bit clearer (for those who understand Norwegian). I believe the juries might grow to like this as much as people in general. There is enough time between now and May to fall completely in love with it, even for haters ;) I mean, what the heck are the criteria here, if jurors - who are supposed to recognize quality - don't reward Gåte? I am hoping there is a reason for us to have faith in "Ulveham" becoming a strong contender for the win...

    So very happy we decided to go with Gåte this year. Such an epic song and performance, will stand out. I love that we're sending a song in Norwegian again, that it has such a strong folksy feel to it. This is absolutely a great representation of Norwegian culture with the old folklore inspiration, the kveding, and as much as I personally don't like using nynorsk myself - I love that this song is done in nynorsk, it just adds to it. While I adore Keiino as a group, have many of their songs downloaded, their song this year just didn't do it for me (but they were absolutely robbed with Monument last time). I want epic from them, not a retro bop.

    huh.... I didn't even know Eurovision was happening already, and as a Norwegian I was surprised by who is representing us, I used to listen to Gåte a lot in the early 2000s, cool to see they're still around.

    I think this song is a love letter from modern Norway to Neo-romanticism era Norway. It's all about painting a picture of a fairtytale Norway ( The trolls killing people and Hulder-women kidnapping men in the mountains fairytale, not the typical happy fairytale). Gives me mad goosebumps listening to it, but understandably not something to win Eurovision. Love from Norway

    Together with Ukraine a potential contender to win the Eurovision song contest. Depends on the juries how well it does in the end.

    Tom I have a suggestion. Could you add the performers' photos, above or under the year, in each statistic. Of course, it's not going to be a big image but a square image equal to the size of the square that has the ranking like 5th or 10th

    i heard people saying this is new fulenn and eaea, i thought like no what this is clearly a first place contender, but i remembered last year some people said eaea is the new fulenn, i never believed it but they were right😭 it still doesn’t exclude the fact that i just love the three songs, wish we have such strong folk bops every year💚

    General question. Does somebody knows what Tom keeps saying before the song? It sounds nice, but I can't quite make it out. Sounds like: "Wanna know my secret bang" ?

    I think they should do something with the costumes. Some light-reflecting fabrics to make their bodies glimmer. She should tie her hair back with some beautiful headpiece letting the hair flow on her (naked?) back with some product to make it shine under the spotlights.

      I get that’s you mean but I think that that would take away the timeless feel of it. If they could make a more natural looking glow, that could work

    I think Gåte will get more jury points than Go_A, and similar televotes. Prediction is too early but based on last year's level, I'd say 3rd place. Better than Alessandra
    And like they said themselves about having to rewrite, it was an improvement and they were happy to do it and it was the best preparation they could have had. Nothing but upside

    I really do love the norwegian ESC25 entry. The best choice they could have made in their MGP selection.
    Tho I had a soft spot for Miia.
    For me the last part is some messy chaos of her vocals. Im sure they figure that out in Sweden.
    Easily qualifies to the Finals.
    I say minimal top 10 and with a big change doing even Top 5.
    They are my 2nd fav after Bambie Thug. ( and I only have a top 3 as of yet, but hey the season is just coming full steam)
    Good luck Gåte

      My 3rd fav is Raiven from Slovenia. Very nice discovering what she has been doing. Interesting works from her.
      I love great talented artists in their niche.
      For me its more interesting than other average material, we know already over the years.
      I hope more countries being revealed this edition will show their talent, power, creativity, originality and connections in sharing in non biased ways!!
      Have a Great ESC season.
      Waterloo 2024.
      Keep on posting Tom!!

    Norway Gåte ,Many people are not aware of what she actually sings, which in my opinion is a cruel text from the old days. And i am from Norway ! The text copied from newspaper:
    She summarizes "Ulveham", based on an old medieval ballad, as the story of an evil stepmother who casts a curse on her stepdaughter - who turns into a wolf running in the forest forever. She only loses her wolf's hide if she drinks her own brother's blood.
    "There will be a kind of happy - but cruel - ending when she meets the stepmother on horseback in the forest, throws herself at her, rips out her heart and drinks the blood. Because the stepmother is pregnant with her brother - thereby the curse is lifted

    While "wolf skin" isn't strictly wrong, as it is the literal translation of the word "Ulveham", it doesn't have the right feel and I think it's missing something in the context of the rest of the poem. I would instead translate it to "Form of the Wolf" 🐺

    • @ErikHolten
      @ErikHolten 11 месяцев назад

      Shape-shifting and skin-walking are both English language folklore concepts.
      But I agree that it's hard to translate. Tolkien dubbed Beorn a "skin-changer" as his translation of the Nordic concept _hamskifter._

      @olemagnus9510 11 месяцев назад

      I was the one to submitted the current translation and yeah I agree that would be better. I only chose wolf skin becuase thats what the previous translation used in the old version 😊

    This is the only song that says Eurovision winner thus far.
    I do think a downside to the spinning platform is that she has to search for the camera on the closeup shots and it's not the most seamless.
