Fun fact: the lead singer of Rhythmic Soulwave is Naomi Ayé's sister from last year's contest (who is also a songwriter) so there's lots of connections to last year
Yes, Laura Thorn's song is a tribute to Poupée de cire, poupée de son - not just in the title, but also the strings at the beginning are taken from France Gall's song. And the lyrics are a response to the older song. This doll isn't a musical doll. She says that she's not a doll from an earlier time (again, clearly a reference to the 1965 song). This doll decides when to turn up the sound. She's not fragile and malleable: she tells her boyfriend that she's not his little marionette, she's pulling the strings. He won't put her in a cabinet with his other little figurines, so if that's what he wants, he can go back to mummy. So it's actually quite clever and playful - and clearly very self-aware
Yes, it caught me first time I heard it. And if it sounds a bit Broadway that’s because the writers are a collaborative pair who have written for several musicals.
From what I understand, La Poupée Monte le Son is like a sequel to Poupée de Cire Poupée de Son (Doll of Wax Doll of Sound). The original 1965 song is about how an artist is like a doll on display and has no selfhood. She sings according to the whims of the men that controlled the industry. In Laura's song, it flips the 1965 song on its head. "The doll turns up the sound" is emblematic of how female artists today are not just the producer/composer's puppet. They represent themselves, stand up for themselves. So, it accomplishes what Toy by Netta does but has far more depth than Toy because it pays homage to France Gall's song, which was the best winning Eurovision song until ABBA.
Rhythmic Soulwave is my favorite, but I already expected everyone to rank it low when I heard it - I guess it's not eurovisiony enough. La poupée monte le son is a good second place for me though, very fun and cute!
For me Rhythmic Soulwave is the only one that caught my interest from this year’s NF. At least until I read that Laura Thorn’s song is so much more than what’s on the surface. But Rhythmic’s definitely my cup of tea over all the songs so far. I feel it might do better live, we’ll see.
Thanks for making my sunday with your funny reactions to this national contest. I feel they've learned a lot from last year's national contest which was boring across the line honestly ! And yes I want Laura Thorn with the '89 Benelux Poupée song to go to Eurovision, that one made me really happy somehow, that might even be my favorite song of all the national contests so far !
The song “La Poupée Monte le Son” feels like a modern response to “Poupée de Cire, Poupée de Son,” carrying a powerful message about how women have gained strength and agency since the 1960s. It would be a fantastic choice for Luxembourg to send this song to mark the 60th anniversary of France Gall’s iconic winning entry, celebrating progress 👏
Laura Thorn is my pick here. Overall I think I prefer the previous edition of Luxembourgs NF because it had more songs that appealed to me, but I could see Laura Thorn with good staging getting a better result than Tali did. I'm also glad to see some returning artists. That's a healthy sign for a national selection in a time when Luxembourg is trying to find its identity as a Eurovision country.
Most might call La poupée monte le son outdated and might flop in the contest but tbh it really adds to its flair and uniqueness compared to other songs, the fact that is a homage to older entries, and is easily accessible to digest by the public especially that catchy chorus.
if you didn't download a song last year from the LSC, here is one you can listen more often. Schëppen Siewen played as a special act with an extra new song during the LSC. Their song called Danzen and I can'r stop listening to it.
The puppet song from 1965 is still relevant in music today since young people (teens) are still paired with songs (by writers) they can perform but very much don't relate to, which made the song so clever in the first place. The puppet song from 2025 is to me the captain obvious response, but it is such a delightful hommage to history that I enjoy it a lot. That said, I am more eager to find out how Je Danse will be performed
1:25 With Angy 1:35 She applied with 4 (!) songs. Actually, it's quite likely that several artists will try again since it's a small country. All finalists from last year (except Tali of course) applied again this year, though Angy auditioned for San Marino. So we could've in theory had the same line-up as last year. 2:50 The song was made by Swedes, that might explain it. 3:28 Considering they did a revamp last year, maybe they will do one again. 4:55 I expected something more rock from One Last Time based on their song last year. 5:42 Soldiers of love? 6:30 If I understood correctly, the song was in the running last year, but with a different singer. 11:15 Same here, though it was already her song last year, they just made a few changes. 11:50 True actually. 14:00 It's kinda funny he's the only solo male in this selection, while there's three solo girls and the rest are groups. 16:04 That's the second Stronger we have this year already.
Not many national finals can give me more energy after the songs than before this is really really good I'm downloading most of them, laura thorn is so cutesy and appeals to so much audience this could do really well in eurovision im talking top 10
My faves are the first 3 , they are way ahead of the other in my opinion , maybe je danse but yeah the first 3 are the best to choose in my opinion especially laura
These are so much more fun than last year, this is great. Very glad we didn't get another Swedish songwriter extravaganza (not that there's anything wrong with that for Sweden themselves)
There’s so many songs that I’m close to loving. Human eyes has great potential, I love the verses of Je Danse but the chorus just goes off track, Zero point five is like a calmer version of The Nights by Avicii. Overall a much stronger selection than last year headed by Laura!
Mmmmmm Luxembourg got you on a good day Tom. Can't really raise the same level of enthusiasm for these songs as you do. The Zoe song-a-like is ok. It's fine. Rhythmic Soulwave I actually think i like. Those smokey smooth vocals are gorgeous. But my winner here is Luzac and "Je Danse". Not filled with complete enthusiasm but I do find it interesting and will look forward to seeing how this is portrayed on stage. Can't say I'm rushing to download any of these but I'll give them a chance. You never know but not holding my breath. Maybe it's me that's being grumpy!! 😊
There’s definitely some truth in that. Having just come from 4 LONG national finals, this honestly felt so easy and cheerful. So much easier to listen clearly to all songs when there’s fewer. It’s like when you’re at the perfume shop and after smelling enough perfumes, you can’t smell anything anymore
Marvellous video Tom, naturally. Can anybody please tell me what it is that Tom says before playing the song? I have listened about 20 times and cannot, for the life of me, work it out!
I think couple of these songs were quite good but none of Top 5 quality in Eurovision. Laura Thorn (good song), One Last Time (song with some great elements but no real hook) or Luzac (dramatic moments potential for epic staging) would probably get to Grand Final with good staging. And Rafa Ela is possibly candidate for "Eurovision fan favorite who fails to qualify"-Trophy of the year for being the extremely typical "go-girl buttshake-dancebreak Fuego/SloMo copy-paste pop song" which could be predicted to be in Top 10 but ends up not even qualifying if there are other woman singer dancepop songs.
The Rafa Ela song reminds me a lot of 'Loop' by Sarah Bonnici, which I didn't like the first few listens, but really enjoyed when Eurovision semi's came round. Perhaps this one might have the same growth. Overall, another selection that falls flat for me. I'm sure the lives will bring some of these to life, but currently I can't help but feel a little underwhelmed. Bring on the new year! I'm sure Finland will shake us right up with their selection!
I find this year Luxembourg is with 5 of 7 songs really safe. Laura Thorn and Luzac are for me the only two who are standing out to be not safe and radio friendly. I hope that Laura Thorn would have a good staging, that I expect she has the best potential in Basel. PS: of the 7 muscician, rhytmic soul is the only musician (group) who can't speak Luxembourgish
I think Laura or Luzac would both make fine winners , although there's nothing particularly mind-blowing about this selection. The rest are too meh to have any opinion about.
I will be voting for Stronger as it's more in my personal music taste, but I would also be happy with Rafa Ela or Laura Thorn winning. Luzak I like at some parts, but I really dislike at some others so if he wins, I hope they'll change it up somehow.
my bottom three (mäna, one last time, zero point five) i find almost insufferable to listen to just bc of the lyrics and the musical style. all the english language songs have really elementary lyrics, which is such a shame because i love the style that rhythmic soulwave is going for but i find bad lyrics to be really off putting. luzac is def my number one because i find some of the choices interesting but it's kinda like picking the best out of a bad bunch for me :/ i hope the performances can elevate luzac and laura though.
Ngl I’m struggling to like any of these. Any song with loads of lalalaing gets on my nerves immediately so it’s a not from me on Laura thorn. None of the others stand out as really good songs that I want to listen to again, they’re all just sort of fine
Chérine's song was more of an 80's upbeat synth compared to La poupée monte le son which has orchestral backings with it, imo as much as their vibes/looks might be similar, their discography are still distinct from each other.
luxembourg needs to go back to the drawing board, they are able to throw so much money into the production but the songs have zero identity and belong on disney channel junior. Not a good sign when Ireland Eurosong has you beat for diversity and personality
@@saskiamckenna2925 well, you don't like it, that's fair enough but you can't deny they are the best at how they approach the ESC as a whole. you gave Eurosong as a comparison... let me tell you 1 thing... In Ireland, we'd kiss RTE's arss if they would give us at least a tiny bit of the Luxembourg's national selection, even if that means sending the most generic crap year after year.
@@EurovisionESC i'd rather a good entry than a good nf overall. i'm also Irish. Eurosong is not a good production but you can tell the songs are from real up and comers and are for the most part authentic, not written in a Swedish songwriting camp and rejected from melfest. La poupée monte le son is everyone's guilty pleasure and it's such a huge grower. The chorus is way catchier than it should be.
It's so wonderful, it hits the exact amount of nostalgia but very nicely produced at the same time, it makes me so happy !

I don't like the lalalala part. If they changed the vocals in the refrain I would like this song
