Fiona IS the Truth. Deletion of Ego. Humble, Talented and Beautiful. Makes me not want to give up faith in people, because it makes me realize there are some really good ones out there.
Her eyes have the sparkle of true creativity... You can tell that just describing herself making music is enough to trigger countless feelings. Sign of a true artist right there. The gestures are just part of her process of sharing these emotions. I don't get how anyone would find that weird. Unless you've never ever witnessed anyone talking about something which obviously affects them on a deeper level than almost anything else in their lives.
Fiona is such an inspiration to me. Like I'm at the point of my life where people are asking me what I want to do as a career and it's like.. I don't know myself why should I be telling you? But, music plays such a big part in my life and her music just gives my very soul or something inside me a feeling of total and complete "something" and it's hard to explain but I'm so happy to be given such a gift. It's definitely something I'd love to give back.
When she's interviewing she doesn't just share intermediate short synopsis's of a vague glance into who she is. She tries to share a piece of who she is, and what motivates her. What's seemingly spuratic behavior is really her being true to her audience, and not giving us what we may think we want to hear. She's deep and twisted in the deapth of her beliefs which is what makes her such a beatiful person, song writer, and artist. She's amazing, and after watching this interview I'm forever a fan.
I wish I was half as capable of expressing myself as she is in this interview- she has so much to say and is trying to get it all out in such a rush... if you take the time to listen and pay attention, it's all about her passion for music: why she's so passionate about it, why it makes sense to her, how she's developed as a person and the role that music and writing have played in that development. I wish I could be as self-aware as she is.
@Anniesik i agree it is breathtaking. its difficult to get a conversation like that out of someone unless they're really passionate about the thing they're talking about. but it also feels like she's talking to one of her soulmates, so i feel grateful on multiple levels.
For the people who think she is crazy/ insane.. This is what extremely intellegent looks like. She is extremely aware and understanding of life and emotions and knows how to express it in a way you cannot understand. Just because of that she will have a better quality of life. Fiona Apple in Incredible
wow..amazing.She described to the letter exactly what it's like playing music with others. Something non-musicians couldn't understand.....until now. Thank you, Fiona.
I would like to read the things she wrote. Being in the moment in a song: there is a video of parting gift, when the audience claps at the end of the song, it startles her. She would be a great person to know and have as a friend.
This is a wonderful, pure interview. NOTE that the way they cut it, they removed pauses and jammed things so close that it seems to be coming out faster than it is. She is a great, careful speaker, natural and emotional - you can see it in her face. There is some great truth here, from a seeker of truth and real emotion and experience. It's anything but the "show biz" you see other people do. I love honesty and this is a wonderful interview. Some people here are afraid of letting her be her!
When I was a kid I used to go to these Christmas parties all the adults would get liqueured up on beer & whiskey sours. Some would smoke these funny smelling cigarettes. Like 10 of us kids stole one and smoked it. Don't remember much after that. It was the 70's.
@BrittanyClaireMusic I agree. Geniuses seem crazy to average minded people. Ignorance is bliss. I wish I knew Fiona personally - I feel like I can relate to her. But I am thankful she has been shared with the world. What if she had ended up just working at Starbucks or something?
Aimee Mann is representative example. Her last album was at one point top 40 of Billboard. She might've had #1 independently released album too. She said she was chagrined, because the album made one tenth of what it would've 10 years ago, finishing that high. What's funny to me is people blame File Sharing/Napster for free music, when really it is Google/youtube. Before youtube I bought albums; now I don't. Millions and millions are like me. Meantime Google's adsense revenues are thru the roof.
You can totally sense what she's talking about when you're watching her live performances. I just watched her sing her song Paper Bag and it really made me miss performing.
Awesome!!! I love this gal so much!!! And that she said about college... That made me feel that maybe we wouldn't even know her, if she had ''wasted'' her time (2-5 years) studying something she probably wouldn't work with (or being unhappy while working as a vet, or smth) in the first place. Sooo...No, college is not that important as society (or parents) makes it feel like. Actually, there are many famous people we like that never went to college, and those who did, don't work with it anymore.
Thanks for the interview. She's not insane. How many creative people have you known really? We are a little bit west of "normal", and thankfully so. How much vanilla, buttoned-down, sweater-set does the world need after all?
I think she said that she doesn't feel like she needs to write. Like it's not what keeps or going or the biggest thing in her life or anything. She just write when it comes to her and she feels like she has to get something out, but she doesn't try to force it, which I really respect. It might be why everything she write is consistently amazing.
I am actually at the same age as Fiona and understand every word, those who don´t, are also unaware of what she calls interlocking.Hard to find someone to interlock, have sex and some sort of communcation. The majority is only capable of using the last the two, so i think we both search salvation in that, but are unable to find this person und this is almost impossible task, cause everytime you loose some part of yourself and what seems nervous and unhealty, is maybe just smoky compensation.
She looks so stressed and nervous nowadays, I hope she gets back to looking and sounding as happy and healthy as she is here. Beautiful artist. Beautiful woman.
Fiona Apple and Tori Amos were so revelant back then in the 1990s , it makes todays Katy Perry and Lady Gaga look like pop music / pop culture dinosaurs
She is an extremely intelligent creative emotional observant analytical understanding empathetic person. Where are other people like this?? Do people like this just pretend to be normal everyday people? Are they just brilliant actors who know it is easier to just blend in than be misunderstood? (sigh.)
From royalties. Other than that, If they're not working why should they get money anyway? Records get out of print (that has already happened to Fiona, for example) so you can't expect to get money from an album forever. You can still sell your music digitally, but sales will naturally decrease untill they're insignificant. Not only because you can download them for free, but also because there's a limited amount of people interested in this music.
What you don't understand is, via youtube you can get to know many artits you would never hear of otherwise. The idea is you buy their music after you listen to them and decide you like their music. Of course, that's not what really happens cause people just go to a host and download the songs illegally. That is wrong, youtube isn't. All artists post their music on youtube themselves. I know some independent artists and for them it's really important to spread their work all around the internet.
RUclips does not kill sales. It doesn't replace having the song, listening to it on your ipod, car or whatever. On the contrary, it's publicity. Otherwise, why would all artists (that includes Fiona) have official channels with their songs? If you wanna get the song for free you'll look somewhere else. If that's what you mean, I dont think that's really what happens to Fiona, since most of the people who still listen to her are fans who will probably buy the album anyway.
I think it kills sales for most artists. The music industry is in bad shape, it is well acknowledged in many spaces. People don't buy albums anymore. People do buy songs on iTunes, but a significant chunk of music revenue is lost due to people getting their music for free on youtube.
Not making money off of touring, period. Artists NEED to make money and ALWAYS DID make money off album sales. With that revenue gone, they need to rely on the touring money. People defend youtube saying the artist gets exposure and they can make money on touring. THEY DON'T MAKE MONEY ON TOURING. So unless they can sell a song to a tv show or movie, they don't make money period. And this is why everyone is saying the music industry is DEAD. You think it's thriving? Google is thriving.
Aimee Mann is an example to support exactly what I'm saying. Music shouldn't be downloaded for free, sure. She's not against youtube, though. She has a channel herself. And again, the videos can only be here if the author allows it. If she didn't want her videos here she could easily make youtube take em off. RUclips is not a no-rules wasteland, it works accordingly to the law.
Forget it I'm tired of stating this case. I'm going to start posting other people's albums as if they were mine, too. Even the day after the album comes out. Screw the artist. It's all about me and everyone's right to FREE music.
I would agree with you if by posting their music you meant posting them somewhere they can be downloaded. There's no harm (on the contrary) in posting the music on youtube though.
@boboxp She's sure had her breakdowns, but that's only cause she was never too comfortable with being on the spotlight. Most famous artists are just more desperate to look like they keep their shit together all the time, but that's not how it happens in real life to anyone. She's absolutely not nuts, and I honestly don't get why you'd think that she is based on this video.
It is limited because you can't download the videos directly from youtube. Of course, you can easily rip and download the audio via another website or a program but then that's not google's fault. Anyway, the sound quality of the songs on youtube is not as good as in the cd or in mp3.
Three years ago and before, I used to buy 15 to 20 albums a year; spend $300 a year and do it gladly. I had a great music collection. Now I buy maybe 1 or 2 albums a year from some independent artist. All other music is free on youtube. I'm one of millions. High school kids don't buy albums; they listen to music on youtube. Where did the money go? Google got it. Their Adsense is making billions for them. Four major labels have their deal. Everyone else gets gyped. GYPED.
@boboxp I will only say this once. If you don't or cannot take the time to understand the depth of ANY human being on the face of this Earth, or cannot see the beauty in every individual, at least Do Not Judge Them. Your opinions are not based on fact they are your opinions, but I still respect that they are yours. I wish you love, fulfillment, & happiness. And I hope that you will shine the unique light that YOU have within more brilliantly, than these comments would imply. Take care.
I want to see a biographical movie about her one day.
Fiona IS the Truth. Deletion of Ego. Humble, Talented and Beautiful. Makes me not want to give up faith in people, because it makes me realize there are some really good ones out there.
Fiona Apple has this grand depth that several take for granted.
I Don't care what anyone else says I Think Fiona Apple is the greatest philosopher this universe has ever had!!!!!!!
Fiona is such an inspiration to me. Like I'm at the point of my life where people are asking me what I want to do as a career and it's like.. I don't know myself why should I be telling you? 💕 oh my goodness how could I not know the existence of this woman sooner she is divine and so similar to me I am so impressed and in awe
WONDERFUL description of an effect of music.
I got chills myself from this interview...
god I'm always back at this interview
She's so great. As a professional musician I would love to play for her. Brilliant song ideas and her voice is so soulful.
She's so beautiful and nice :D
she looks amazingly mature despite the cow print gloves...lol and yes playing music with some one is def between conversation and sex. Fiona Rocks!
All she says is always so simple, clever and entertaining. She should write a book
So, thanks, Fiona, for following your dreams, and for doing what made YOU happy!!!
WE THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

People just have no clue these days. Fiona is an amazing songwriter and musician.
And she's also beautiful....bonus!
she's so inspiring ^ _ ^

she's so pretty that those gloves don't even bother me
Love this lady.
brilliant. moved me.
@BrittanyClaireMusic and she's not afraid to look and sound as excited as a little child. LOVE!
This is great maturity and wisdom.
ugh!!!! you are so awsome and strange,we love you

man she's just great...
What kind of person is so utterly enchanting that nobody notices those gloves
this is so beautiful i actually teared up idk why... :')

So painfully honest. I adore her.

you are 100% right, :) Couldn't have said it better myself

I was all focused on her face in the beginning and then it zooms out to those crazy gloves and I was like "WUUUUUUT" but then it's just Fiona.
I don't think there's a more beautiful person in the world.
i love this interview.
Thanks for the interview.
She's not insane. How many creative people have you known really? We are a little bit west of "normal", and thankfully so. How much vanilla, buttoned-down, sweater-set does the world need after all?
funny they shot the interview like an apple ad. the cam angle, lighting, and film speed are exactly the same.
I love this woman!
That was wonderfully honest. And those gloves are fucking amazing.
@boboxp her speechs are my religion
Can't wait for her next album. Heard it'll be out by next year :D
I think she said that she doesn't feel like she needs to write. Like it's not what keeps or going or the biggest thing in her life or anything. TRUE ARTIST PLAY AS A VENT OR RELEASE SHE IS THE TRUTH IN PERSON AND IN SONG
Yep. Music is incredible.
She has beautiful eyes. Never noticed that.
I can so relate!
She looks so stressed and nervous nowadays, I hope she gets back to looking and sounding as happy and healthy as she is here. Beautiful artist. Beautiful woman.
she oozes depth and intelligence.
that's how passion look like
I. Adore. This. Woman.
love love love
Thanks for the interview.

She feels most empowered when she's not thinking of her flaws. I get that.
@boboxp that's why she's so cool. she's crazy and doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks.
@boboxp "Notes to self"s are generally notes to oneself. Just FYI.
Forget it I'm tired of stating this case. I'm going to start posting other people's albums as if they were mine, too. Even the day after the album comes out. Screw the artist. It's all about me and everyone's right to FREE music.
I feel the same way. I guess we're birthday triplets lol. I write everything I think & stories & poetry. Maybe it's a 913 thing :)
Getting by youtube's filter is waay harder than you think. If the song is uploaded here it's because the artist has nothing against it.
Wow
I would agree with you if by posting their music you meant posting them somewhere they can be downloaded. There's no harm (on the contrary) in posting the music on youtube though.

I just can t get enough of Fiona, So Offbeat and Honest.

@BrittanyClaireMusic If that means wearing sheer gloves that looks like they're from dead Dalmatian, well... I don't know how to finish this sentence.
awesome women
