  • Basketball is truly a game of inches, which is why "Attention to Detail" focuses on the smallest nuances of the game. Focusing mainly on biomechanics and the details that spectators do not normally catch, we try to provide you with everything you need to perfect a move.
    This episode is about the stepback, one of the most heavily used moves in the NBA, college, and high school ranks today. It has the potential to be very effective, but also to be a turnover machine or an injury, if done the incorrect way. To be as explosive as possible, check out the video. Pausing is encouraged, as many important details are captured in just a few milliseconds!
    No copyright is intended! All footage belongs solely to the NBA.

    First, I LOVE these videos - they are awesome.
    When it comes down to it, I think there are fundamentally two basic kinds of stepbacks although there are variations. The first and in my opinion easiest to master is the closed stance stepback. This is where you are facing away from the defender at the time you plant your foot to push off and change direction. So if you are going right, you plant your left foot and push off back and to your right. The open stance stepback is where you are moving right and you plant your right foot and push off backwards to your left.
    There are advantages to each. You can step further away with the closed stance because you are stepping backwards but also in the same direction you are moving. So you don't have to completely reverse direction. That means you can potentially create better separation with the defender. However, the defender is also in position to recover more quickly because he doesn't have to completely reverse direction either.
    The open stance step back in my opinion is a more effective move because you are actually changing direction. If you are going right, you step back and to your left. This forces the defense to reverse direction also. You effectively are attacking the defenders front foot with this move and forcing him to turn his hips, which defenders don't like to do. Although you can't step as far away, you are in better position to give the defender a gentle push forward with your offhand to create more separation. Since your stance is open, your offhand is back behind the defender, available to push him forward. I see the pros do that a lot.
    The variations come from the dribble move mainly. In an open stance stepback, you can bring the ball in front of you, between your leg or behind your back. In my opinion, it is always best to keep the ball in front of you whenever possible, unless the defender can get a hand on it. I don't like to go behind the back because I don't like to go backwards very much. I would rather go sideways than backwards. Of course pros like Curry can shoot off of this backwards move but that takes tremendous athletic ability. The less I have to go backwards, the stronger my shot is.
    The very first scene in this video showed a player use both stepbacks in one possession to make a defender fall over on the floor. The first was the open stance stepback going to his right. He went back to his left, attacking the defender's front foot. As the defender had to turn his hips to change direction, he hit him with the closed stance stepback and the defender completely fell over.

    hey By Any Means, what about players who step back off of their back foot? most players will jab with their front foot, then step back off it. i’ve seen steph curry occasionally jab with his front foot, but then jump off his back foot to land on two feet; this allows more separation but is slightly slower. i think a good example is during thr 2015-16 season was a home game vs the spurs when he caused kawhi to lose his balance with an off-ball cut, then caught the ball, and did a back-foot stepback. it’s almost like 2 stepbacks together.
    look for the video “Steph Curry Loses Kawhi Leonard Then Hits The Jumper!” and pay attention to his back foot on the stepback; he doesn’t begin to start his stepback until after his front foot’s retracted.

    The keys helped me. I was having a hard time trying to figure out how could I keep my balance in my stepback. Now I know. Thank you :)
    But I have one problem... The final step. I don't know how my feet could be square to the basket. I have my feet slightly turned in my shots and it makes it a bit hard for me to do a stepback explosively because my feet turn in awkward angles. How do I fix this? :(

    Feet are turned obviously not squared. Squaring your feet is a rookie mistake bud get out the fog...

    • @ByAnyMeansBasketball
      @ByAnyMeansBasketball  8 лет назад +6

      Square doesn't necessarily mean pointing directly to the basket, it can simply mean balanced and pointing in your natural foot position, which is generally slightly turned... Think before you accuse.

      By the way, it seems as though we are out of "the fog" considering how many people have learned from our videos.

      +By Any Means Basketball yes indeed I have also learned from your videos and am happy to see that you're not one of those "old school" coaches who teach the wrong mechanics and end up ruining the players shot. So as long as you realize that I am happy and will continue to be subbed.
