Antiquarian booksellers are part scholar, part detective and part businessperson, and their personalities and knowledge are as broad as the material they handle. They also play an underappreciated yet essential role in preserving history. THE BOOKSELLERS takes viewers inside their small but fascinating world, populated by an assortment of obsessives, intellects, eccentrics and dreamers.

It has been an honor all my life, (I am 84), to have met, over 45 years ago, an extraordinary human being: Mr. Louis Cohen, founder of Argosy Book Store, and Swann Galleries. I will be in debt with Lou, forever: His teachings on old and rare books, manuscripts, maps, etc., were invaluable for my purchasing and enjoyment of my very own bibliophilia, bibliomania, bibliolatry, and, lastly, bibliopathy...!!! Also I had the honor of meeting Mrs. Cohen and their 3 daughters; 4 wonderful, delightful and hard working ladies, who followed the steps of their husband and father. I live in Mexico City and hope to be able to buy a copy of the film as soon as is available.

I live part of the year in Port Townsend Washington, a victorian seaport and the used book stores have some gems. I rememeber it had an old city utility ledger from 1860's and the size of the leather and metal binding on this book we something else. All written in fountain pen old caligraphy style. lots of old maps and explorer journals, etc. And of course the "smell of history" :) lol

Just watched this on Netflix. One of the best documentaries I've seen all year (says the book hoarder😂). Books aren't going anywhere. IMO they were the first step toward the information age and what will be the historic upload of consciousness. Thoughts and ideas of millions once placed into books are now being added into an infinite virtual library. I will keep my "artifacts" and also continue to buy. There is nothing like holding a physical book, an experience much like a record album 😉💯👍🏾

As a bookworm and former book hoarder, I drooled over every scene. As I got into minimalism, I stopped buying new books unless I gave away the old ones, and forbade all of my friends to give me any. Definitely a treat of a film-like watching a baking show when on a strict diet, minus the suffering.

I love books and the magic of them. I enjoyed getting a peek into the world of booksellers. It is much like the art world.
The only things that felt off to me was the inserting of odd wokeness toward the end. They mention how all these men are in the business, almost mocking it. Well, that was the reality years ago.
Then the black girl collecting Hip Hop memorabilia was enthusiastic but it felt out of place for a book documentary.... Will collectors be breathlessly collecting a rapper interview from a hip hop magazine about the birth of gangsta rap with the same drive as those seeking Shakespeare? Probably not. Music is a different category in my mind. I enjoyed Ken Burn's film work on the history of Jazz.
Then the notion that more black people need to be brought into the field was kind of wacky. People who love books are of all races, ages, etc... We live in a country where only 10% of the population is black. A good number of them are not interested in reading. It's like the idea that more women need to be engineers, astronauts.... We need equity, heaven to Betsy or civilization will fall apart or not be progressive enough. It has to look at certain way blah blah blah. Why isn't it, blah blah blah??? This is all woke social engineering propaganda.
Billionaire rappers like Jay Z and Rhianna are probably not losing sleep every night wondering, where aren't more white performers rapping? Why aren't more white men in professional basketball and football? Oh, heavy to Betsy civilization will fall if more whites don't participate in every aspect black culture. What will become of us.... 🤣
If the booksellers are so eager to help the black community then assist the Baltimore school system which has blown away billions of dollars to uplift people of color only to find their culture is different. They don't value scholarship to the same degree and it can't be forced on them. Test scores have not improved. Being a white savior is not needed.
Other than that, I enjoyed the film.

What I don’t get is why Helene Hanff was buying books from London if all these stores existed? I’m glad that she did, it made for a wonderful book. I used to go into these stores with my mother, she bought and retired on her first editions. At auction she would always be outbid by Carter Burden.

Being a bit of a book collector I was looking forward to this but it quickly turned to disappointment after a few minutes. It was very simplistically put together (with some terrible music edits) and very boringly shot. The interviews were plonky and pedantic and I quickly ran out of enthusiasm. Great shame as the subject is interesting and some of the interviewees had interesting things to say. What a missed opportunity. Personally I'd advise no one to pay to view.
